.940 save percentage in the playoffs is insane. How many times has that been done in the history of hockey? I'm guessing less than five times.
I remember thinking "who the hell is this goalie?!" when Rask just slammed the door on Buffalo in the 1st round of those 2009-10 playoffs. Turned out to be a damn good goalie.

He probably doesn't get in the hof which is a pity. Such an awesome, consistent goaltender for more than a decade. Boston's 2010's would have been so much different if they hadn't got the stability in net provided by Tuukka. In my heart he will always be the best goalie, those two penalty shot saves in Sochi vs USA were legendary.
He's 100% a borderline HOF and probably deserves a spot in a more fair HOF but with other goalies who deserve it more not in its hard to argue. He's absolutely of the best of his generation and I despise the detractors who have no logic or sense when talking about him.
He took that team farther than they should have gone. I watched him stone wall a stacked Penguins team in 2013 and sweep them in the conference finals when the Bruins offense wasn't all that great in the series. Rask just stole it.
I watched Fleury struggle in so many playoffs and fail much worse than Rask and while he has some detractors in Pittsburgh it's nothing like the shit Rask gets.
Tim Thomas after winning a cup literally disappeared from the league suddenly but nobody shits on him for abandoning the team or says he did when what he did was similar if not more egregious than Rask leaving the bubble to see his child.
The man deserves better than those Boston fans who cut him every chance they get and I believe on another team that was better at building depth, he wins a cup or more. Nobody ever looks at Boston not showing up or blowing it in big games like game 6 2013 or game 7 2019. They just look at Rask and not the team. Makes me sick.
I'll use the Penguins again since I know them. You don't win on goalies alone nor lose. The Pens had back to back cups with a goalie who fell face first off a cliff not 2 seasons later. The team is every bit as responsible for losing or winning in 99% of situations but people would rather scape goat than look at the other players who did their job far worse than Rask.
I look at Rask as being similar to Price, though I'd argue Price is slightly better. Price still doesn't have a cup though he's given stanley cup level performances over multiple seasons. I think Tuukka has as well, it's just been unfortunate that neither of them have had the team needed for those runs. Shoot, just if Pasta hadn't messed up his hand during the playoffs then Boston might've done better against St Louis. Hardly Tuukka's fault though.
Comparing him to Thomas, Tuukka has been far more consistent over a far longer period of time. Thomas by contrast really peaked for a few years and then disappeared.
@@adamg7984 I could see Boston having similar 2010's as Philadelphia if they didn't have Tuukka. Constant struggle to find a consistent starter while the rest of the team is certainly good enough to make noise in the playoffs. Boston definitely doesn't make it to finals twice without Tuukka.

@@afhostie Price is insurmountably better than Rask, he never consistently had a team as good as Rask in front of him, only a few seasons did that happen for him, and some of them he blew it in the playoffs (except his last season ever 😥where he made it to finals), mostly just that insane 09-10 run where Halak took over after 2 defeats against Washington, then Halak said no to the Caps and Penguins, the 2 best teams in the league one after the other beating them in 7, only to lose to another team who had deep injuries in their goalie roster (Philly), where somehow Michael Leighton managed to get 3 shutouts!
Speaking of Halak, he's still available, and Pittsburgh's second goalie injured himself, they should sign him, he's still a very solid 2nd goaltender as he has proven since he got older and lost the first spot, the best free agent goaltender right now who doesn't want to retire.
Back to Price, Rask never was close to a season like he had in 2014-15, where he pulled 1.96 GAA 44-16-6 9 Shutouts in 66 games and a .933 Save %, grabbing the Hart Memorial,Jennings,Vezina andTed Lindsay Award the same year... and he had such a "meh" team in front of him, other than maybe the best duo of d-men at the time as in Markov-Subban who had perfect, complete seasons, which was a rarity. We're condemned to injuries taking out our best players in MTL since so damn long, we already lost Dach and he was amazing to watch in those 2 games.
Not saying Rask wasn't good because he sure damn was and like Price, the kind of goals he would give, the rare ones, often looked weak for some reason, and that's both of em.
It bewilders me that Tuukka was blamed at all for the Bruins losing to Chicago in 2013. He was unbelievable, and it took a fluky 'off the backboards' goal to beat him for the GWG (similar to the GWG Pitsburgh scored on Rinne in 2017). In 2019, while admittedly I didn't watch the finals, his numbers speak for themselves. He may have been the best goalie since he entered the league, certainly up there with Lundqvist, Price, and Rinne. As Shannon mentioned, his 921% SVP is third all time behind the likes of Hasek and Dryden, and a 925% playoff SVP is also ridiculous. Not even a Bruins fan but this goalie was a monster, and should be in the HOF.
To be fair, is it not unreasonable to be upset with a goalie giving up two goals in less than 30 seconds during a series deciding game. Yeah It was a fluke goal for one of them but to give up two and cost your team the game is unacceptable. I am certainly not one of those guys that think he was the problem for the series as a whole or ever a problem for the Bruins in general but you cant deny that when it mattered most, he just couldn't get it done. Overall a great career and an even kinder person so no hate but I don't think he deserves no criticism at all for the Chicago incident.
The Blackhawks in 2013 were the better team all year long, and that played out in the Finals. 2019, the entire team decided to take a collective shit on themselves in game 7, and that series should have been won. Que sera sera.

Agree 100%! There are so many dumb doorknobs who populate the Peanut Gallery they fail to appreciate what they have. Pre-Injury Rask, over 90% of NHL teams would leap at the chance of getting Tuukka if he was on the market. But so many of the doorknobs out there think any Goalie isn't worth spit if he doesn't go 16-0 in the playoffs with at least 10 or so shutouts. It's not just them being morons, but morons with standards bordering on the insane. And a news flash to those critical of him departing the Bubble in the '20 playoffs; he may done his team a favor. With a child going through a medical emergency, that's a formula for a distracted Goalie. And no Goalie can succeed distracted.

@@jordanneufeld3317 This is my sentiment too because I watched that happen to many goalies who won the cup early and then didn't get back or came up short the rest of their careers. Fleury was that way right until he helped win the 2017 cup for the Penguins. A lot of people in Pittsburgh ragged on one of the most lovable and talented goalies of his generation because he came up short between 2010 and 2016. Thankfully it was never as bad as people are with Rask but it's just asinine. Rask did so much for the team and Boston as a whole. He carried a team that otherwise was deficient in several ways to the finals twice.
It's not Rask's fault the Bruins have struggled to provide depth beyond Bergeron, Marchand, Chara and Krejci almost all of their careers. And in 2019 the offense failed to show up for game 7. In 2013 the defense allowed a game tying and then game winning goal in less than 1 minute of time to lose the series at home. Sure, Rask takes some of that blame but people legitimately ONLY look to him. They don't question why twice in a minute with less than 2 minutes left to play that Chicago players were left unchecked or poorly checked in front of the net.
@@adamg7984 100% agree man that's well said. I'm not a Boston fan but that's exactly why I said what I said. People always find ways to blame the goalie in the playoffs wether it was on them or not.. so it's nice to hear a voice that actually agrees and is much more level headed about it. The people that just jump the gun and immediately blame the goalie for a game that wasn't even their fault are wrong in my opinion and are just looking for the easiest person to blame.. goalies gotta be the hardest postion to play for that reason alone. The amount of flack they take is usually unfair.

Kudos for him remaining with one team throughout his career. It's great also that he recognized and timely accepted retirement.
The fact he tried to come back shows he cared about the team. I can't believe people can sit and spew nonsense that he quit on them when he did so much more for Boston than any of the dopes who criticize the man.

Rask is 4th in career sv% of all time and tied 1st in playoff sv% by goalies with over 100 playoff games.
I don't understand how you can argue not inducting STATISTICALLY the 4th best goalie in NHL history into the HOF.
This is someone who not too long ago stated he was on the fence with Bergeron's HoF candidacy, so take things with a very tiny grain of salt.
Yeah, because my opinion matters to the HHOF committee? Rask has one Vezina, no Cups and was not a dominant goalie. Save percentage is a stat that is much different across various eras, so that doesn't necessarily mean hall of fame either. Fuhr had a .887 mark and definitely earned his spot in the hall.

I think there's a pretty good comparison to make, which is Henrik Lundqvist. He has no cups and one vezina, worse but comparable stats to Rask and they've played in the same era. I don't think you can convincingly argue that Lundqvist belongs in the HOF but Rask doesn't.
Rask does NOT have a Cup, not on his record due to not playing a single minute in that run. Lundqvist played at a higher level for longer. He also has 459 wins whereas Rask has 308. It's not close.

I completely understand the point about the wins/gp but there already are HOF goaltenders with less wins, so it's not exactly unprecedented.

I’ll never get over 2019, Tuukka was incredible during that playoff run yet all people remember is Game 7. That should’ve been Tuukka’s moment, hurts so much more now
It seems reasonable that a career average stat like save % should be a function of the number of games played. Among goalies with at least 500 games played, Rask ranks second in all-time save % behind Hasek. That should count for at least something toward the hof.
Seeing Luongo, Lundqvist, Ryan Miller, and now Rask retire relatively close to each has made me feel old. Not to mention Fleury is probably in his last season and Price’s future is in doubt. Feels like my childhood has been destroyed like that.

I am pushing 50. Many of the baseball players I grew up adoring retired 20 years ago. The ones that came after have retired. That is the circle of life. What those players gave us were memories. That is valuable.

I don't see a scenario where he isn't in the HOF in all honesty. I feel like you brushed over 3rd/4th overall save %, as many others do and it confuses me.
I feel like it was known that GAA used to be the main goalie stat, but eventually people seemed to think GAA is also influenced by Defense so save % is the best stat to tell a goalies skill. Rask had the 3rd/4th (depending on source) highest save % ever with a lower GAA than those above him. Cups are team awards, based on his stats as a goalie he's literally top 5
Except that sv% is also influenced by defense. If they only allow for low danger shots from the outside and clear all rebounds (like Detroit in the early 00s) you can clearly see your goalie will by default have a higher sv %. In the same way, if your defense blocks a lot of shots, but at the same time likes to pass the puck to the opposing player and leave forwards uncovered in front of the net (like Seattle) your goalie will by default have a lower sv %. While the general skill of the goalie of course still matters in both cases, defense plays its part too.

Sure you can argue not all the saves were easy or hard, but it is literally the percent of pucks stopped by the goalie, not just goals against. Though still, until McAvoy, Rask had all of 1 defenseman; Chara.

As a goalie and Kings fan, even though I love Quick, Tuuka is the goalie I idolize from his generation. His smooth and efficient style gets overlooked by those that don’t know. His depth, positioning, skating, and reading of the shot are beyond elite. He makes it look easy, so people don’t give him credit. Just his consistency alone is better than any other goalie of his generation (maybe Hank). And his mask is as iconic as any in the history of the NHL.
I think he’ll make it into the hall because he has international success to go along with his impressive NHL stats

Honestly, the way a lot of Bruins fans (figuratively) spat on Rask throughout his career is one of the biggest reasons I can't cheer for them. It's the only time a portion of a fanbase has managed to drive me away that effectively.
I know many Bruins fans, and none of them hate Rask. I've encountered the irrational hatred of him only online.
It’s very much a vocal minority who hate in him. Most see him for what he is - a superb and consistent goalie who made Boston better at times than they actually were
@@JPMadden true. It’s funny, the only people who dislike Rask are older than 35 (or atleast the ones I’ve met). All the younger fans tend to admire him.
As a finnish hockey fan that is goalie focused it is sad day. Feels like last of the finnish domination has left even more than when kipper called it quits. Every year one or two rise up as challengers but it feels like tide very much has turned from french canada to finns to russians.
Don't fret. The new generation is coming. Saros is the figurehead, Husso, Kähkönen, Lankinen etc. as the followers. In three years, it's going to be these four guys at the top.

But it just feels like end of a era with this and peksi rinne being out as well less than year ago. I mean who are boston sports media to blame now when things go wrong. I have had him in my keeper league since 09, back when he was a back-up for Timmy Thomas, only now do I miss his reliability and consistency.. I think some Bruins fans will grow to appreciate Tuukka in time... Shame his career ended in this way.
Tuuk is one of the best goalkeepers to ever have played in the NHL. To bad people never recognised him.

Trivia: Tim Thomas was the only American and one of only 6 non-Canadians (including Rask of course) on the 2011 Cup winning squad.

Very simply, goalies are heald to a higher standard for the hall, to much higher of a standard. There are so few goalies out there compared to skaters, and I think because of that disparity in numbers, goalies have a harder time getting respect.
Tuuka has the silverware,
he's a chamipion, he's multiple finalist,
he's started for the same team for a near decade with continual success,
he survived a period of of reg. season struggle for 2 years to help his team back to the pinnicle,
AAAND his numbers have been insane both inside and outside the playoffs.
No brained here.
If even Tim Thomas doesn't get in the HOF I don't think Tuukka has a chance...
Tim has a Stanley cup, two Vezina trophies and most importantly, a Conn Smythe. Tim's career was short, but those couple of years he had in Boston are some of the best years any goalie has had...ever

Actually I'm gonna say it, Tuukka will not get in the HOF. His number might get retired by Boston, but the HOF is a bridge too far I think. And it's unfortunate, because I'm a Finn and would love to see him in the HOF, but I guess we'll see.
He never won the cup as a starter and lost 2 finals series when he was a starter. Not HOF but hall of bloody good. Not only was he not the starter for that Cup he didn't even play at all

I would just want to thank tuukka for alot of us i Finland. We did love you for what you did and also the temper of yours. Because alot of us do have it and some of finnish goalies did had it when i did grow up. And you were a damn good goaltender!
Tim Thomas was greatly respected in Finland before he made breakthrough at NHL. All the respect to the Rask!

Listen as a habs fan I’m happy he is no longer going to be in my nightmares. However, as a hockey fan it’s sad to see him go out the way he did. While he didn’t have a hall of fame career he still had a damn good one with lots of success and has my respect

Rask had a very solid career. Sad to see it end this way, especially so early. I never quite understood all the hate he received, seems to me he was in the upper echelon of NHL goalies for the better part of his career. Have to agree, though, not quite a HOF career.
0.925 sv% in over 100 playoff games is in my opinion HoF statline.

Tuukka Rask is more than deserving of being elected into the HOF. His accolades are too strong for him not to be in the HOF.
Always one of my favorite players. Just the smoothest guy in net and loved playing for the B's. Definitely the scapegoat for a lot of fans when things didn't go right and unfortunately without a Cup as a starter, I just can't see him in the Hall

The last career video was Jim Carey. Now we have Tuukka Rask. He had a long productive career. Hall of Pretty Good and anti Jim Carey.
First, Rinne, then Henrik retiring and now Rask. Man, we were spoiled with some really great goalies in the mid 10s.

As a local, Tuukka's biggest "flaw", and the reason Boston never really warmed to him is because he's a prototypical Finn goalie and Boston is a Tim Thomas type of town. I don't agree with that sentiment, but it's what I've observed over the years. Tuukka didn't win hearts and minds by being brash and bold because that's not how he's wired, and Boston fans always acted like he thought he was above them because of it. (I love the Bruins but can't stand Boston sports bro dude culture.) Just a personality vs. market mismatch. I'm not glad he's retiring, I hate to see him go out this way, but this is what I expected to happen: he'd attempt to come back, it'd go poorly, and since he's kind of a perfectionist (and his heart hasn't really been in it the past couple years), he'd retire. I'm glad to see Swayman getting his shot at the big time, he's a joy to watch.
Tim Thomas was brilliant for a season, but Rask was remarkably consistent his entire career.

If you want to know some reasons why there are those that were not a fan of his, here you go:
Blew the 3-0 games lead against Philly
Blew the 3-0 lead in game 7 against Philly
2 goals in 17 seconds (with less than 2 minutes to go in game 6) to lose the Cup to Chicago
Didn't even give the team a chance in game 7 vs St Louis with those early goals
He was a terrific goalie, except in those crucial games, and that is what bothers his haters
Only 34 years old. Same age as me. That sucks!
One of the greatest goaltenders in Bruins history... it's too bad he wasn't quite able to get it done in the end, but, he got us to 2 finals appearances, all the regular season accolades. Its too bad, we'll be missing that backstop for a while yet I feel.
He absolutely eventually belongs in the HoF IMO.

I think you pegged it exactly right-- not that he couldn't have, but didn't get the Cup will keep him out. I have a ton of respect for what it takes to be an NHL Goaltender.

To think he retired at 34 when tim Thomas won the cup, vezina and the conn smythe at 37 is crazy AND that was after getting hip surgery as well

As a fan of hockey for only my 3rd ongoing season, it's weird seeing some of who I consider the best to retire. I picked up on who the big names or the best of are real quick because hockey is great to me.

He's been a top 5 in my mind forever. Obviously, he has elite talent and his number should be retired, but he's not HOF.

Rask falls into the Osgood argument. In 98 all I heard was how Detroit won inspite of Osgood. In 99 when the Wings were even more stacked, Ossie got hurt and lost to the Avs. Same critics were saying they'd have won if Osgood had been fit. Go figure? Rask has been immense for Boston, see how well they do now he's gone.
Definitely numbered retired by the Bruins not HoF.
The goaltending battles between the Bruins and Rangers during this era were fantastic. Also I feel like part of the hate from B's fans toward Rask really stemmed from the collapse in 2010 vs Philly and some never really getting passed that

the main reason Tuuka Rask was deemed expendable by the leafs was because at the exact same time, they had Justin Pogge in their system who had a ton of success at the junior level. the difference is Pogge's success came playing for an absolutely stacked Calgary Hitmen team at the time, and then an absolutely stacked team Canada.
Rask meanwhile was doing the hole "Kid playing against men" thing in Europe. and then played behind one of the worst Finnish teams in the modern era at the world juniors. He was literally the only thing good about them that year. if I remember correctly, their only win was a 50 something save Shut out by Tuukka.
also the leafs were not a good team at the time, they were not close either. they were clearly on the down swing at the end of the Sundin/Kaberle/McCabe years. So bringing in raycroft, even if he had a bounce back season wasnt goin to do anything for them.
it made no sense to trade a young promising goalie for risk like Raycroft, and it definately made no sence to trade the best goalie in the system.
If he beats the Blues and Blackhawks in the finals, I think he’s a lock for the Hall, but without those wins I think he stands outside the Hall. It’s weird how much weight a few games has over a player’s entire career.
Whether it was fair or not, Rask had the undesirable task of coming in after Tim Thomas. Bruins fans were very spoiled by that 2010-2011 season. Rask caught some blame for that 2013 cup loss, but looking back at the infamous "17 seconds" sequence, both goals feel much more like a lapse in defense than a lapse in goaltending. Lucic is just standing there and leaving Bickell wide open on that tying goal, and while Rask was out of position for the game winner, I'm still seeing a lot of standing around from Ferrence and Boychuck.
I don't think that cup loss from 2013 ever left Tuuka's head. It wasn't his fault at all, but after that, I'd notice he would have these games where he'd make a bunch of crazy saves... only to give up a game winner to a generic wrist shot. Still, that 2019 cup loss was even more painful. He played well, but Binnington was simply the hottest goalie in hockey at that time. The 2019 Bruins got a taste of how the 2011 Canucks felt in their cup loss.
If he makes the HOF, I think it's by virtue of his save percentage. He had a few solid seasons for *very* mediocre Bruins teams from 2014-2017 so I don't think it can even be argued that good defense was all that made him a great goalie. He's got a Vezna and a couple of other seasons where he was certainly worthy, but didn't win it. What hurts his HOF chances the most is a lack of cup while he was starting obviously. I would personally vote him in for his consistency, but I'm a little biased. lol

One of the worst trades in Leafs history. I remember thinking what a steal! Raycrap did win Calder, shows my hockey IQ. Wonder if Leafs bury Rask if he stays, like all our goalies. Damn good goalie. Still hate the B's... No mention of all his freakouts? Dude has a temper!

He is in the same tier for me as Crawford and Osgood so close but not close enough for the Hall of fame
Jarome Iginla only made it past the first round with the Flames once in his career, no cups, a couple rocket richard trophies and a Lester B. Pearson but other than that no hardware, but because his individual stats including an amazing amount of goals, most of which were in the dead puck era, and solid consistent play and point totals, he easily, EASILY made it into the Hall of Fame. Tukka has the comparative stats when it comes to goalies and has gotten his team deep, into two finals in his career, and barely any goalies have a higher save percentage EVER, so how would he NOT get into the hall of fame? I don't really think it's much of a debate at all.
HOF or not, I hope the Boston fanbase treats him like family.

I respect the hell out of him in that time for leaving the bubble. Sure you want players dialled in, in the heat of the moment but if his child's health is being severely affected, in that circumstance, he put the team first by admitting if he did play, he would not be in the right frame of mind and the score could've got ugly. I'm sure these people would've complained either way because they've an axe to grind.

When I saw Rask play his last season in Finland I knew he's gonna be an NHL starter. He always had a temper, and having to be under Tim Thomas who was all instinct did hurt his technique a bit, cause he was on solid to begin with no need to go crazy!
Most likely no HOF cause no Cup as a starter. Have to respect the fact that he took a shot and said he's not who he used to be and retire. Takes balls!

Ironically, Andrew Raycroft was asked to discuss Rask's career during the broadcast of last night's Bruins game.
I've never understood why players in any team sport should be judged as failures because they did not personally lead their teams to a championship. (In baseball, was it Ted William's fault that the Red Sox team he played for was run by people who didn't know how to build a championship team, or because the Yankees were so dominant?)
Tuukka is wayyy over-hated around here in New England, especially by the local media.

Well I called it long ago there was some bad karma in his raging, knew Boston not going to win cup with a rager. calmed down in time yes, but also his game went down with passing time too.
He's a top 10 goalie of all time in my opinion. He has better stats than Roy and Brodeur.
Both Rask and Cujo both should be allowed in the Hall based on their iconic masks. Just my biased goalie opinion though 🐻🐺
