true but this was a time when women had to depend on men for their keep and status. mom might have felt despair and guilt for going along w her husband's plea to move to the woods. and panic that she might not have money from her husband but saw a chance to bring income to the family through her son. she also knows this opportunity may secure her sons future. parents in those days didn't often consider allowing small kids to decide what they wanted for themselves. Think of all the kids who were allowed to quit piano lessons and regretted it in adulthood. (early boomer kids were usually made to take piano for some reason.) just looking at another side, not suggesting it's right.
She was a flighty socialite who wanted her own fun cause she was accustomed to it. She didn't have commonsense to be a good mom or the incentive to try to be a better parent. I don't think she was malicious, but she was very self-centered.
I don't think she knew any better. She was raised this way and it wasn't common for women of her status to work or take care of their own children, it just didn't happen. She was encouraging the books and the publicity because it would be a great way for her child to have money saved for later. I honestly think she tried to be a mother and felt she didn't know how to. Maybe she never wanted kids, and it was expected of her to have at least one child. It's not like women were free enough to do as they pleased at that time.
The real boy ended having a horrible relationship with his parents and became estranged and on his mothers death bed she refused to see him and him and his father never really became a family again they always had a somewhat stiff relationship.
I was thinking in the beginning when the Mom just packs up leaves her kid and husband with the nanny she was the problem. She had no idea what being a mom means. She cared more about fame than she did her own child. Hopefully in real life he had a nanny like the one in the movie with some actual maternal instincts.

I saw this movie. it was very sad. I remember feeling very angry w the parents bc it's their job to know their kid. another personality would have loved this life but this kid was stressed so much by it that it colored his whole life. no parent has a right to take away a child's future. The solider who found her and brought her over was from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Thus giving her the name 'Winnipeg Bear" Hence the nick name "Winnie" Lovely little back story.

saw a newspaper comic once called "Rose." she had a little boy and one morning was rushing him bc she was running late. she wanted to make a quick breakfast and asked what he wanted. He said let's have time and apples. the last frame had them sitting on the stoop happily and peacefully eating apples. Read a million comics growing up, but that's the one I never forgot. maybe bc making time for children is such a rare thing, or maybe bc the child's wishes being taking seriously is even rarer.
In context, i dont think the dad was all that bad. Everyone tend to forget every family have their hurdles. The dad had some maturing to do for sure, but in the end they came out strong. (Going strictly off the recap, haven't seen movie)
He was a traumatized man who wanted to regain his innocent, sense of security and wonder that childhood had given him. He tried to live through his son to regain that sense. His wife had her own trauma, but there's only so far sympathy for her can go since it's now an excuse to justify her own bad behavior towards her son. Were they bad people? No. But they were running away from reality and their son was paying the price. That's why the nanny character is so important: she's reality there to tell them they aren't the children anymore and Billy is not Christopher Robin. In real life, these two had to face the fact they didn't raise their son the way he deserved. This is just the portray of them figuring it out.
We must remember too that no one understood that soldier’s got PTS from war until well after Vietnam war in the 1970s. This is a a factor in the Dad was having to deal with as well.

And there isn’t music evidence to suggest his father suffered from PTSD, they just know that after coming back from the war, that he didn’t want to go back. And prefer pacifism over anything else. The wat left a huge disgust in his mouth. And he was dealing with some triggers, but having triggers itself does not mean PTSD. And-Christopher said goodbye to his parents long ago. They’re a product of their social economic status.

This was more or less the first time a child got this famous, and known all over the world outside of the movie business. So it makes sense that the parents didn't know how to deal with it or how to protect him.
Wonderful movie. It kind of makes me think about how often parents take a very active part in their kid's lives when they are little but lose interest and grow distant after they are grown. I read Cassandra Peters' autobiography (Elvira Mistress of the Dark) and it made me think about this movie when she mentioned being a Daddy's Girl with her daddy being her hero and favorite person growing up and had so much fun with him but when she was 14 or so he didn't want to be around her when she stopped being a kid because he didn't understand her. In the movie AA Milne was a great dad to Billy when he took him on fun adventures in the woods and came up with stories but then capitalized on them and sent him to a boarding school where he wasn't affectionate to his son or willing to be there for his son like he used to be.

My grandma actually bought my uncle by an ad in the newspaper that roughly said: -"Baby boy to sell, healthy." The price asked was 2000 RM ( it was in 1940, Dresden, Germany.) Way later, his biological parents who were elderly by then, wanted him to help them to get out of Eastern-Germany in the lates 70's. Because my family immigrated in Canada. I don't know how they heard about him but he showed the letters to my grandma, laughed, and threw them away. We never heard from them again. That's my uncle story about being sold by his parents for their own selfish happiness.

We know that even some movies based on true event are always not 100% in real life, it's a movie and needs good endings and such. The family never really have a great relationship, both parents cheats on each other. Even after the boy is all grown up, he does not have a say or benefit from the story. He never really got in good terms with his parents till after their death...

And he did take a share of the profits to care for his handicap daughter. That daughter later used her growing share to set up a charity for handicapped. Milne's wife, who in the film stayed with a friend in London, actually was having an affair because she wanted to live a glamorous, royalty type of life and not be a country dweller. AA Milne also cheated on his wife and really didn't like children at all. Probably his own post-war trauma combined with the fame of a book character that he didn't really enjoy. Nou seems to be the only character they stayed true too.
Well that gave me happy years in the end, the reality that the book is not just a children's book but the healing of a war veterans depression, that helped the next generation
In the end was forgiveness. Billy finally understood even though his father went about promoting the books wrongly, that his life and his fathers touched many lives. He saw that on the most unforgettable place of horror. War. Thank you for sharing the story behind the stories we all grew up on.
"In the end was forgiveness.", I mean sure, in the movie. In real life his mother ended up not wanting anything to do with her son and refused to see him at all for 20 years, even when she was on her deathbed. His parents were not good people.
I have mixed emotions regarding this story. Every family has its facets. Each member has their story. The story through their own eyes and feelings of events. Each of my siblings have their own perspective of certain events, and each has their own feelings. None diminish the others. No family is immune.
if you would actually read his biography, you would not be a stupid pretentious keyboard warrior under a video that explains a movie about a kid who had shit parents who pretty much sold him for money and fame. being treated like a fictional character by your parents is not easy, you know, but commenting about someone's struggle and criticizing it on tube is very easy.
I like it how only around halfway through this recap it is revealed what famous children book played such a huge part in this story. The movie seems like one definitely worthy to watch.
Who would have thought the legendary book that brought so much joy to children's lives, would bring so much pain to a little boy that just want to be loved by his parents, they wouldn't let him have even that, tragic.
This story really touches me. Parents aren't perfect some live and learn. Unfortunately there aren't any do overs. I think what's important is wholesome intent when revising the people who may have sparked past traumas. Humans are complicated.

winnie the pooh has always meant a lot to me, I live near where they were set (the “real” 100 acre woods) and I share Winnie’s name. I grew up knowing about Billy and knowing what this told me, I hope the bookshop was nice, he bloody well deserved it.
How bad of a parent do you have to be when your own worker whom you rely heavily on basically calls you a cow and a monkey? Nau was more parent than they were, and that moment she had to be the parent of two adults. One accepted she was right, the other did not. In real life, Billy did eventually take the royalties of the Winnie-the-pooh franchise, but not for himself. He took it so his daughter, Clare, who was born with severe cerebral palsy, could have a better life with her condition.

This was more or less the first time a child got this famous, and known all over the world outside of the movie business. So it makes sense that the parents didn't know how to deal with it or how to protect him.
Reading the title of the video made me think it would be almost a horror. I wasn't expecting Winnie the Pooh

Wonderful movie. It kind of makes me think about how often parents take a very active part in their kid's lives when they are little but lose interest and grow distant after they are grown. I read Cassandra Peters' autobiography (Elvira Mistress of the Dark) and it made me think about this movie when she mentioned being a Daddy's Girl with her daddy being her hero and favorite person growing up and had so much fun with him but when she was 14 or so he didn't want to be around her when she stopped being a kid because he didn't understand her. In the movie AA Milne was a great dad to Billy when he took him on fun adventures in the woods and came up with stories but then capitalized on them and sent him to a boarding school where he wasn't affectionate to his son or willing to be there for his son like he used to be.

This isn't every parent though. Some and probably most still have a very tight bond with their kids even as adults.

According to what I've read in the past, Christopher Robin eventually did end up accepting the royalties to ensure that his daughter, who was born with Cerebral palsy, had what she needed to thrive. Unlike his father before him, he was able to swallow his pride for his child.
All billy wanted to do was play in the forest & play with his toys not be famous his parents didn’t care, billy had to snitch on his nanny he could of kept it to himself.
No he couldn’t. He was a child, scared of losing the one person who seemed to love and know him as Billy.
The name of the bear, originally was Winnipeg bear, so named by the owner Harry Coleburne ( his home town). He bought the bear cub in White River, Ontario Canada, at a train station during his trip to Quebec, to train for the war. Harry was a veterinarian, so he knew how to take care of it. The bear became the mascot of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade, and was sent to England when the Brigade went. The brigade was sent over to France, but the bear was not allowed to go, so it was lent to the London Zoo, where Billy (Christopher Robin) saw it.

Way later, his biological parents who were elderly by then, wanted him to help them to get out of Eastern-Germany in the lates 70's. Because my family immigrated in Canada.
I don't know how they heard about him but he showed the letters to my grandma, laughed, and threw them away. We never heard from them again.
That's my uncle story about being sold by his parents for their own selfish happiness.

True... I barely cried when my dad died... As I stayed in the home where he died in, I can barely feel the sadness majority of the time. But when I go to his office, on the floor he used to walk with me, I tend to cry the most... It's odd really how the one place I feel the most distant to is the one place I'll miss him the most...
We know that even some movies based on true event are always not 100% in real life, it's a movie and needs good endings and such.
The family never really have a great relationship, both parents cheats on each other. Even after the boy is all grown up, he does not have a say or benefit from the story. He never really got in good terms with his parents till after their death...

@@bryanbee1604 Basically Christopher Robin never forgave his parents. Although it was the school bullying that was the most traumatic, not the home life. Oh, he married his first cousin too. And he did take a share of the profits to care for his handicap daughter. That daughter later used her growing share to set up a charity for handicapped. Milne's wife, who in the film stayed with a friend in London, actually was having an affair because she wanted to live a glamorous, royalty type of life and not be a country dweller. AA Milne also cheated on his wife and really didn't like children at all. Probably his own post-war trauma combined with the fame of a book character that he didn't really enjoy. Nou seems to be the only character they stayed true too.
This is a good movie, but it's only loosely based on the true story. The real story didn't end with a happy ending, for one.

This movie should be seen by all parents who send their kids to participate in talent shows.
In the end was forgiveness. Billy finally understood even though his father went about promoting the books wrongly, that his life and his fathers touched many lives. He saw that on the most unforgettable place of horror. War.

In real life his mother ended up not wanting anything to do with her son and refused to see him at all for 20 years, even when she was on her deathbed.
His parents were not good people.

I saw this and was delighted how this was how it created the children’s book ✌🏽
I have mixed emotions regarding this story. Every family has its facets. Each member has their story. The story through their own eyes and feelings of events. Each of my siblings have their own perspective of certain events, and each has their own feelings. None diminish the others. No family is immune.
if you would actually read his biography, you would not be a stupid pretentious keyboard warrior under a video that explains a movie about a kid who had shit parents who pretty much sold him for money and fame. being treated like a fictional character by your parents is not easy, you know, but commenting about someone's struggle and criticizing it on tube is very easy.
That doesn't make it less painful.
I like it how only around halfway through this recap it is revealed what famous children book played such a huge part in this story.
The movie seems like one definitely worthy to watch.
I think I am one of the few that always disliked Winnie the Poo as a kid. Something about it never set right with me.
Who would have thought the legendary book that brought so much joy to children's lives, would bring so much pain to a little boy that just want to be loved by his parents, they wouldn't let him have even that, tragic.

This story really touches me. Parents aren't perfect some live and learn. Unfortunately there aren't any do overs. I think what's important is wholesome intent when revising the people who may have sparked past traumas. Humans are complicated.

winnie the pooh has always meant a lot to me, I live near where they were set (the “real” 100 acre woods) and I share Winnie’s name. I grew up knowing about Billy and knowing what this told me, I hope the bookshop was nice, he bloody well deserved it.
How bad of a parent do you have to be when your own worker whom you rely heavily on basically calls you a cow and a monkey? Nau was more parent than they were, and that moment she had to be the parent of two adults. One accepted she was right, the other did not.
In real life, Billy did eventually take the royalties of the Winnie-the-pooh franchise, but not for himself. He took it so his daughter, Clare, who was born with severe cerebral palsy, could have a better life with her condition.
