Two Approaches Making Conical Slab Cups with Texture

- This video demonstrates how to make two variations of a simple conical slab mug using an arched pattern as a guide. I am using a slab which I texture in this video- but of course, you can make without texture. My ceramics II students have a textured slab set project for which this technique really lends itself. The first mug is shown in detail of the construction process. I am using a beautiful MKM roller to add my texture to the clay after I lightly dusted it with cornstarch. I use the Kemper SWB scratchwire brush for scoring the slabs and handles. (See my doc below for links to the MKM rollers and tools). When the second form was built, then I show the stretching and shaping of the form to create a bellied out variations of the straight conical slab. I also show how I make handles with texture from the carrot slam method. (Learned this first from Sandi Pierantozzi… check out her gorgeous work!) I texture the handles, and cover the handles and cups together to allow to get leatherhard overnight. The next day, I show how I attach the handles. When everything is finished, I don’t believe I mention it, but SLOW DRYING is of the greatest importance for even drying. Don’t ever allow your cups with handles to dry uncovered quickly… it is the surest way to get cracking at your handles!
Although I don't show glazing, since this piece is stoneware, I recommend celadon glazes, which have a transparent quality, and work great with textures.

I oil my rollers the same oil that people use for woodblock tables. It keeps them from sticking to clay and conditions the roller and keeps the clay from drying out the clay.

Awesome video! I love seeing art teachers rocking the videos! Mine are so pathetic compared to yours! Thank you for sharing yours with all of us!! Little tidbits about the MKM rollers. You really shouldn't have to use cornstarch with his rollers. I am not sure I have ever had an issue with sticking. If you use them throwing then you need to dip it in water before rolling to prevent poor stamping/sticking. I see below someone mentioned oiling the roller. If it is an MKM it is already conditioned and does not need any treating at all. It has already been done! I am a friend of the creator and have become quite versed in his tools (and use them practically daily). There was a comment about glazes and texture. I would highly recommend you make some texture glaze tiles and test your glazes beforehand to see what works best with your textures. It will save you a lot of time by testing them first! Since being introduced to the MKM rollers and stamps I rarely make a piece that is smooth anymore. They are just too much fun!

Hi, thank for all your video, they are amazing and I learned a lot of knowledge! I have a problem with the handles because they dries fast, more fast than the cup. I try to leave them under plastic bag but it is the same. After i have done the cup Must I use a soft clay (took it from the block of the clay)? Or must I prepare the coils while I cut peaces for the mug? Thank you for information! 😉
FYI the two wires on the bevelling tool are for different angles. The one you used is for 60 and 30 degree angles, while the shorter wire is for 45 degree angles.
Right! Sorry if I failed to explain that! I was using the 60 degree one for a greater bevel! Was rushing to get it filmed during my plan bell yesterday! ;)
It is easier and quicker to put the coil in position on one of the sections, either the base or the walls, before joining the two pieces together. You still have to stick your fingers into the cup to smooth it.
That's a very good strategy, Chris. I try to keep my videos a little extra simple for my beginning students. I have found multi-steps like that can throw them off! ;) .

You might have another video about this somewhere . . . but I'm wondering if you can recommend one or more glazes for this type of textured mug? Some of my glazes don't show the texture very well underneath. I do have a couple of Amaco shinos that work well. Other ideas?

I feel the clay wall are very thick, I would made it much thinner. ........ holds the heat longer when it is thin, and also cooler. And a thinner rim is much nicer to drink of.
Hi Kenneth- the walls are thinned quite a bit when I texture them. So, although I start with a 1/4" thick slab, they are quite a bit thinner. Also, I thin the rim at the end, by compressing with wet fingers... not sure if you watched that far. (See about 14:50) I am quite picky about my rims... and I will always thin and compress it for aesthetic reasons, functionality of drinking from it, as well as durability. (I caution my kids about making terribly thick or thin rims.- With 175 kids artwork in my room at one time, we have to consider the durability of things not getting chipped...too thin=easier to chip) I'm afraid I don't understand one thing you said in your comments. I know that thicker cups will hold heat of a beverage better than thin cups. (?)
quick question - what are you rolling your clay on as far as the material goes?
I’m using heavy duty canvas covered table. Many people prefer unfinished birch plywood.

Can you attach the handle to the cup without letting it dry first?
The most important thing is that the cup and the handle are the same moisture when you attach! So as long as that happens, it doesn’t necessarily have to dry. But, I like to get both of them to the slight plastic side of leather hard, as I find it easiest to attach at that point! :)

That sometimes depends on the consistency. With my kids, I often cut a block of clay, and have them roll out directly from the block without wedging. As beginners, sometimes wedging that new piece- especially if quite large, can cause more problems than it's worth. Some clays may be more finicky - so I always recommend experimenting with your clay type. The one issue that could happen, but I don't personally notice it is the auger memory from the pug mill may cause some warping. (I have only heard this, not really experienced it)

How do I find your template for conical mugs
There is a link to the pattern in the video description. If you are on a DESKTOP- you will find the video description underneath the video and title. If you are on a MOBILE DEVICE, you will see the title below the video, then look to the right for a little ‘arrow’ which becomes a drop-down menu. Open that drop down menu, and the video description will be visible. In both cases, your video cannot be playing full screen while viewing the video description. 1/4 in thick for a mug??
Yes, we roll 1/4" because we texture them. But the rim is thinned a good deal beyond 1/4". Remember, I teach high school beginners. I made this video for them. They can't handle much thinner than that.
The clay looks a little thick to me.. I would want a lighter cup
Of course, people can make them any thickness, but I find my beginning students (for whom I have made the video) have the greatest success with 1/4" thick slabs prior to texturing. (After texturing, they become thinner of course.) One of the important steps I show is the the thinning of the lip of the cup for a lighter appearance. (15:00) . The cups I made are quite light, but whatever floats your boat! :)

Corn Starch. In the US, we use it in cooking- to thicken liquids like gravy.
