ALL of these Kaiju monster actors were incredibly tough going through what they did. Constant sweating, barely being able to breath through them, subjecting themselves to dirty Toho pool water for the ocean scenes. And having EXPLOSIVES detonate all over them it's just NOT an easy feat at all...!!! However, i have to say THANK YOU to ALL of them for the memories they left me with as a kid. And even now as an adult even though most of what we see is CGI oriented. I'll ALWAYS be a Kaiju fan for life...!!! :)

many people don't get how incredibly difficult it is to do these sort of roles, but this shows a firm representation of the rigors of the stress of said performances. I hope I can find a similar video documenting the 90's films.

RIP Haruo Nakajima we will all miss you. My favorite roles as Godzilla are:
Gojira (1954), Mothra vs Godzilla (1964), Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster (1964) and Godzilla vs Hedorah (1971).

According to *some* sources I’ve found, Mr. Nakajima DID see action in WWII. He was a gunner aboard a Betty when it was attacked by a Hellcat, and was nearly killed in the sinking of HIJMS _Shinano_. He was 14 at the time.
Mind you, there are other sources that contradict these, so some more research seems to be needed.

I enjoyed this as I grew up watching the TOHO giant monster movies. Amazing to find out what a hard job it actually was for a suit actor back then, especially Nakajima. That was dedication and professionalism. Blew me away a few years ago when I found out that he also played the green gargantua. I found it ironic because Godzilla was sort of a hero for me back then while the gargantua gave me nightmares after I saw that movie!

The cool thing about suit acting vs CGI is this: your favorite monster has an actor playing them; they are not a culimation of graphics and sound effects, rather in this way they are more personable.

There was an article about Nakajima in a sci-fi magazine in which, while filming "War of The Gargantuas", the director wanted Nakajima to actually shove the woman (doll) into his mouth. Nakajima humbly asked the director if that scene not be done as he was concerned that it would greatly frighten children watching the movie. So the director took his advice and the scene was played, as we see today, in which Gargantua has the woman in his hand, the camera cuts away, and then in the next scene Gargantua has already chewed and is swallowing her. Still came across as a chilling scene, minus the actual vore.

There's a lot of nuance to this stuff that you don't really think about until you pay close attention. Seeing stuff like Godzilla throw his arms up in annoyance Monsterland's containment system at the beginning of Destroy All Monsters or his goofy laugh in Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster really drive that home.

its so dissapointing that suitmation is seen as poor and cheezy, when it is in fact very efficient, takes a lot of backwork, and when done right, the end result can be superior in realism to stopmotion and cgi. compared to american monster movies coming out in the 50s, japanese monster movies were more expensive. suitmation should be taken more seriously and appreciated, especially when american films still sometimes use it to this day!
