What is Deconstruction? Jacques Derrida
I prepared and delivered this lecture on Derrida for one of my courses during the spring of 2020. This is an edited version of my lecture on deconstruction.
In this video, I explain the basic philosophy of Jacques Derrida and his own explanation of Deconstruction. Included also is a reference to Derrida's critique of Jean-Jacques Rosseau in his book "Of Grammatology."

Can the literary theories like postcolonialism or feminism be considered as deconstructive since they aim at subverting the traditional binaries of the dominant colonist vs the colonized or men vs women? However, in subverting the conventional hierarchies are they not re-establishing a dominant 'center', a notion which Derrida argued against? From the postcolonial lens 'the colonized' may be the new center but isn't it still a 'center' nonetheless? Similarly, Freud challenged the hierarchal position of 'the conscious' but then he made 'the unconscious' the center. Kindly clear this confusion.

Thank you. Some use deconstruction but the term and it’s usage is very specific and for that I recommend a careful reading of Derrida. You may want to watch my discussion of Derrida’s chapter on Plato’s Pharmacy. Anyway, I have addressed all these questions in several of my videos so please take a look at various playlists.

Thank you. I am not a sociologist but to deconstruct any text would generally follow the same process.

Do all texts deconstruct themselves?
A lot of scholars agreed on interpretting Derrida's given concepts ....Does this refute Derrida's argument about the undecidablitity of meaning/s?
Does Derrida utilise reason to belittle reason?..

Thank you. Obviously, I cannot answer all these questions and I encourage you to read and make up your own mind. As for texts deconstructing themselves: Texts don’t deconstruct themselves. They are offered to us as a whole with constituent parts; it is the critic who must find the places where the text fails it’s own logic and deconstruct it from within. This is just a basic video on Derrida, and only careful reading of Derrida’s works will help you in answering the questions.

You are right sir ,it is the critic who deconstructs a text ...I am just using a quotation "Western metaphysics:
Deconstruction as a mode of interpretation works by a careful and cir￾cumspect entering of each textual labyrinth.... The deconstructive
critic seeks to find, by this process of retracing, the element in the system
studied which is alogical, the thread in the text in question which will
unravel it all, or the loose stone which will pull down the whole build￾ing. The deconstruction, rather, annihilates the ground on which the
building stands by showing that the text has already annihilated the
ground, knowingly or unknowingly. Deconstruction is not a disman￾tling of the structure of a text but a demonstration that it has already dis￾mantled itself. "..."it has already dismantled itself(hillis miller)...miller might be exaggerating....because the contradictions are often implicit(in fact he is aware of that (but this is because of the nature of language) .....anway ,whether a text dismantles itself (figuratively or literally)or ...... You are welcome. I think what he is suggesting it the text deconstructs itself because the unraveling is inscribed within it. So, technically, it will be the careful reading of a critic that would tease it out. But there are postmodern texts that constantly undo their own logic in the process of reading: Midnight’s Children, If on a Winters Night a Traveler etc etc. please also watch my videos on Plato’s Pharmacy.
