Zuko's story is by far the best thing about this adaptation, I love the addition of the 41st, and it being compassion not cowardice that got him banished, and combining it with his Agni Kai with Zhao in the animated series where he wouldn't finish Zhao off. It says a lot about his character and why he will make a better fire lord, because compassion is actually his strength, not a weakness. Also I think making June the horny one is probably for the best, in the animated series it being uncle Iroh can be seen as silly, but I think if they did it here it would just make a lot of people really uncomfortable and make Iroh creepy and unlikable.
Bro Dallas is amazing. He really made me fall in love with the character and because of his performance, like the way they fleshed out the Agni Kai in this really touched me. Daniel and Paul are amazing too! These actors are incredible man
1 of the few things that I can say the Netflix series did better than the original Nickelodeon series was expanding upon Ozai & Iroh's relationship as brothers. In the cartoon they are never on screen together, but here there are multiple times where they interact with each other, which adds more to their backstories & character developments. Also, having the 41st Division be Zuko's crew was a nice change that I'm glad they included.
I really appreciate that this show expands on the already great story of Zuko and Iroh. Zuko is such a good person at heart and Iroh is the support everyone needs in life.
And now you know why this is my favorite episode out of this season, despite the condensed fire temple scene. 😭😭😭 Some fun facts for you: The Mother of Faces is featured in the mainline Avatar comics, specifically The Search. Highly recommend if you've never read. From an interview I watched, evidently during the Agni Kai scene, even though DDK was pulling his punches for the camera, Dallas was still covered head to toe in bruises the next day. Some of those pained grunts are probably real. You can see a few hits really sink in and it makes me wince to rewatch. I freaking love Dallas as an actor. If you do a rewatch of these episodes off camera, pay close attention to his facial expressions. There's just this minute little things he does, especially as he settles more into the role, where he just telegraphs so much without saying a word. It's especially felt during that extra little interaction with Aang in this episode. Now that we've got season 2/3 confirmed, I have 0 doubt he'll do the role justice as it grows more complex. The little moments like his already peppered in through the first season fleshing out the royal fire family's relationships is probably what destroyed me the most during my first watch through. And LORD the music towards the end.
EXACTLY!! 😂 Roku was not it for me at all. He was waaay too comical. You were backstabbed by your best friend, left to die, and pretty much allowed Sozin to wipe out the entire Air nomads starting the 100 war. He has no reason to be cracking jokes with Aang, especially not this early in the story.
That's a good point. Also I would like to think that when he said that friends were a liability, I'd like to think that after Sozin betrayed Roku and left him to die, it personally changed Roku's view on friends deep down because of that betrayal. And as you said, maybe he cracks a few jokes to lighten his mood, maybe to mask how he felt
Yeah. Later when they are more acquainted he starts making jokes about being the avatar not hurting your chances with the ladies but right now he should not be so cheery especially considering what situation he put Aang in.
I have rewatched this episode so many times, and I break down and cry every time the procession does the fire Salut. everyone agrees the 41st crew was an amazing change. Ozai looking subtly pained to hurt Zuko felt good to me. cartoon Ozai was more 2 dimensional. I'm so down for a twisted abusive Asian Parent angle for him. Roku, while friendly, didn't have the tall elderly grandfather presence. Also, they never showed Roku and Aang together, always as opposing cuts to each other. Cartoon Roku always stood beside Aang and presented as a contrast. They need to make him taller and with a more serious grandfatherly air to him. his voice turning menacing and threatening in defense of Aang is very much needed. Nyla and June are perfect, and I'm glad they removed the creepy Iroh angle, and instead had June tease him.
I know I also got chills when I realized that it was the 41 division. I never expected it. ❤Also when Aang came back looking for Gyatso. That’s heartbreaking 💔
9:00 lol so many “oh’s” as your reaction to this scene. 19:28 lol the way yall reacted to “Daddy Dae Kim” Great episode. Dallas did so well. The Roku casting didn’t bother me but maybe I need to revisit the cartoon character to see. I don’t remember too many specifics about him. Great reaction as usual.
7:30 Can’t help but noticing that Avatar Roku looks and behaves like Pai Mei from Kill Bill. 21:30 Ditto. Ozai looks like he’s regretting scarring his own son. TBH, his animated counterpart seems more ruthless and cruel.
Dang, I loved your reactions ladies! This episode is fire! I actually love the martial arts scenes in the show, the choreography has been very good, and the visuals are top notch too.
they also included some Legend of Korra Lore with the whole Spirit thing, and the Gyatso made it there, totally get why it's all over the place for you if you only consumed the Original Series. They also mixed some comic lore in the whole Series and this Episode, the Totem for example is from the Search. They also add some characters traits, that have been fleshed out in those other medias.
I actually agree with the Wong Shi Tong cameo being too soon but then I realized that there was a possibility that they wouldn’t get approved for seasons 2 & 3 so they probably trying to bring in some fan faves just in case that happened & would still please the fans in a way. Not too sure but it would make sense!
I really love the back stories for both Zuko and Azula. It lays the foundation for their character arc. Either way, I'm just so happy they confirmed season 2 & 3 and REALLY hope writers take our criticisms and incorporate changes to improve the story. Regardless, I'm all in, amazing cast and storytelling thus far IMO.
@@MeeshDeeReacts I am worried about Toph. So many characters are so beloved but I think Toph is such a favorite amongst so many and potentially one of the most difficult roles to fill. Doesn’t The Fire Nation know if they kill the Avatar while in The Avatar State The Avatar Cycle will end? I’m surprised Sozin, Azulon, Ozai, Zhao didn’t realize that.
The writing on this show certainly has a lot of mediocre, clunky sections, and a few poor ones. However, it also has some genuinely goid writing, and a few genuinely great bits. Hopefully, they can smooth things out for Seasons 2 and 3 and have more consistency.

Hey Avatar Meesh and Avatar Dee how it been. I hope you two day is going well "Happy Friday ".Another great episode. My absolute favorite out of all the episodes. The Fire temple looks great. Lol, in June, flirting with Iroh. They did a fantastic job with the casting of Avatar Roku. The fight scene with Aang and the Blue Spirit taking on the Zhao men was great. I like the scene where Aang and Zuko chat as they're hiding from the Zhao men. As you can see that Zuko is starting to see the Avatar in a different light they bond over their teachings before Aang words of compassion trigger him because of his trauma with how he was abused by his father. I felt sad for Aang once he realized that Monk Gyatso was gone. They did a fantastic job with Zuko backstory. Where we get to see him before the scar. And how he has shown respect and care for his people during the war meeting. As well the revealation that the crew he's with currently was the crew that the Firenation was about to sacrifice. And how he got his scar. He still believes in compassion, which is the result of his father to banish him and send him an impossible mission to find the Avatar. I like how this story of Zuko heroic sacrifice changed. Lt Lee and the others' perception of Zuko, who they felt earlier, is just a spoiled prince. Now, they gave him the ultimate respect as they bowed to him. My absolute favorite scene from this show so far. Just before he sleeps he sees a reflection of his younger self in the mirror. So far this is my favorite episode. Great job by the actor who played Zuko. I'm happy for the news that the live action is,getting not just a second season but a third one which is awesome. But anyway I hope you two have a wonderful day. Stay safe, take care and stay amazing.

Our favorite episode forsure, they really nailed showing the contrast between young zuko and present zuko. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and enthusiasm as always! Take care 😍
@MeeshDeeReacts, you're welcome and anytime. I completely agree. I love how much the live action was able to put into Zuko backstory and how how Dallas Liu killed it as Zuko as well Daniel Dae Kim who's doing a fantastic job of making you really hate Ozai much more than Mark Hamill voice of Ozai in tge animated series. I like that the Zuko and Iroh relationship is somewhat similar to Bruce Wayne(Batman) and Alfred on how, despite Zuko, may not be Iroh son. He sees him as his son in vice-versa. Iroh may not be Zuko father. But when it comes to who is more of a father to him. We know it, Iroh. The extra dialogue between Aang and Zuko was a bonus that I appreciate from the writers of the live action. But anyway I hope you two day is enjoyable 😁
About Wan Shit tong; in Avatar LORE, he isACTUALLY capable of reciding in BOTH the spirit world and in the natural wold. So he was implying that Katara and Sokka couldnt hear them only because they were human beings who were inside the SPIRIT WORLD. Which is unnatural. I'm sure it was just a cameo guys. Like I genuonely think they will bring him back in season 2 for the Library. So that's why Sokka and Katara can hear them in the REAL WORLD. He was probably just on vacation. I think that's why it's good not to have assumptions about season 2. Dont worry guys he will be there in the next season lol a cast member even mentioned it
well, sending troops as sacrifice to their deaths is not Evil, its just a really wasteful and sociopathic move. sadly sometimes it works thats why thru times generals did use this awful tactic. in WWI. the trench wars, generals given order from a far away castle to attack the enemy lines, they knew the cost would be high, but they didnt care, the bigger picture aka a better position or a victory was more important than the lives of the conscripted soldiers. they were told you either attack and maybe survive or you get shot in the head right there for being a deserter. so is it Evil? no, its cold math without any humanity.
