Update: Subaru pushed a software update that now allows CarPlay to take up the entire center portion of the screen in a much more useful square layout. And there's a persistent button for Auto Start/Stop at the bottom of the screen. Really improves it
I've read it's much better now on the 2022 models. Something to note is, if you were to order one with the smaller infotainment system, you lose the Navigation feature on the smaller screen. It's also harder to see some elements of the smaller screen. And lastly, if you go for the 7" screen, you also downgrade the stereo from HK with 12 speakers to a far less powerful stereo with only 6 basic speakers. Also, dealers are currently ordering all the trim levels except the basic, with the 11.2" screen, moonroof and reverse emrgency breaking, so getting the 7" screen will require ordering it that way which will add up to 2 months wait to delivery. I honestly think those who do go for the lesser infotainment option now, will regret it down the road.
I bought the Touring model in December and love the car. The beeps don't bother me and no trouble with pressing the infotainment buttons. I love the acceleration and it handles much more like a car than a wagon. Plus the durability makes it perfect to haul my dog in the back. Love the safety features which are great at alerting me since I live in a major city with crazy traffic. My only wishes is for a 360 camera view but has the front 180 which helps with parking. The blind spot warning lights in the side mirrors are brilliant. Nappa leather is soft and comfortable. Was shopping against RAV4, CX5 and CRV and this won out.
I have the previous generation 3.6R, and the only nanny that bothers me on occasion is the lane departure one, and that is because the roads are so messed up anyway, that lanes change often, especiially in a construction zone. Aside from that, the car is simply a beast. I test drove the new gen Outback, and the new platform stiffness is leaps and bounds above what my 2019 is, and I think my `19 is built like a tank as is. While I'd love to have the Turbo 2.4, I was shocked to get over 500 miles in a tank with the thirstier flat-6 and 6 simulated gears, so I can only assume that 2.4 will be stupid frugal on gas. As an do-it-all car with heaps of space for anything you might need to buy or move (wtih the exception of a refrigerator or king size bed, obviously), it's been pretty damn amazing thus far.
Purchased the 2020 Subaru Outback Onyx XT on March 20th. I have seen a mixed bag of reviews on the infotainment system, personally as a 62 year old tech guy. I don't find it to be that bad. As a daily driver, you get used to the system very quickly. Also, the lane departure system is what provides the most beeps, turn the volume to minimum and it becomes part of the background noise. One item I wanted was Android Auto as I have used that a lot when traveling, but I find, I use it very little in the Outback as I use SirusXM as my primary music source and the Subaru's nav system. I do wish the nav system was Garmin based as that is what I have used for many years now, but I am learning the Tom-Tom based system. I guess I am proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks. After looking at small to midsize suv/wagons, the 2020 out back was looking very good on paper, and a test drive sealed the deal. One item to note is the XT with the 2.4 engine has a towing capacity of 3500 pounds which is very good! And yes, I love the throttle and torque of the turbo 2.4, it is addicting!
The beeping can be turned off. It’s the “Lead Vehicle Acquisition” that is beeping when it sees a new target in front of you to follow on adaptive. I turned that and the Lane Departure Warning beep off because they were making me crazy.
I have a 2017 Impreza Sport and honestly, the beeps from the dynamic ccruise control are barely noticeable after you've had the car a few months. And given that few folks drive in silence, it's typically drowned out by the radio and even just conversation. I rarely notice it anymore. And it's a small, small thing to deal with when you consider how very excellent the cruise control is. You can literally drive 300 miles of interstate and barely have to touch the pedals. Even in start/stop traffic. It's impressive and I could not imagine owning a car with a lesser cruise control system. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my new black '22 Outback Onyx Edition XT, it's due to arrive end of this month and I cannot wait!
If they hadn't gotten rid of the 3.6R i would have gotten one. Settled on the last year they made that great engine. And myself a 2019 3.6R Limited and LOVE IT...!!!
I bought this vehicle last year. It's a great car for road trips, snow days, light off roading, and camping. The power is great, it's comfortable and quiet, and the ride is soft. The remote start via smartphone app is great in the winter. I use the back seat for a mobile office, of sorts. It's really nice and comfy back there... luxurious even. My main gripe is the fake shifts are unpredictable and distract from a normal driving experience. Second biggest gripe is the back of the driver's seat doesn't fit me that great. Third gripe: the climate control icons are too small, while the buttons I never use are gigantic. For such a huge screen, a lot of space gets wasted. Finally, you have to disable the engine start/stop every time you get in the car, and it's annoying. Overall I like it. It's a great vehicle for what it is, despite a few gripes. I do yearn for the handling confidence of my old WRX though!
In proud that Subaru is making such a good job with their vehicles in terms of the interior and the awd system, my second dream car will be either an forester sport or an outback touring besides my first dream car that is the civic type r. I like the outback interior with the orange interior in the touring trim level. The outback infotainment system screen looks like the Tesla model s infotainment screen. Also Subaru has lots of standard features like standard awd in every Subaru, the panoramic sunroof is standard and safety features also a re standard in Subaru rather than Toyota or Honda or Nissan where awd is optional and you gotta pay more and Pay more for safety features and more money for the sunroof. But Subaru has everything you need and it’s cheap and has more warranty than any other car brand. Great job Subaru👍🏼
Let's hope the ongoing success of the Outback will inspire more wagons to come to market. I have to say the appearance of the silver Pontiac Vibe at 15:15 was the highlight for me.
I'm not sure if the new Legacy and Outback are the same in the last gen, but in my 2017 Legacy you can turn off the cruise control beeps in the instrument cluster screen by using the trigger-style buttons on the bottom left of the steering wheel to access the settings. It's usually called "Lead Vehicle Acquisition Sound" and you can turn it off.
It’s a little cumbersome, to be honest. Nothing you won’t get used to though, you’re right. That start stop, without question, should have been a button-horrible feature on any car. I’m always turning it off when I commute.

Nice Video, good job pointing out the pros and cons of the Turbo Outback. That infotainment tablet will definitely take some time getting used to, I have a 2014 Outback and I would love to buy a new outback but my 14 Outback just runs to good (just change the oil and do my routine maintenance) to justify getting a new Outback. In a couple of years, I may get that turbo Outback.
Nothing beats physical control buttons. On screen controls for the A/C is not quite good and effective. Screens break, not forgetting screen burn in finally light pollution from large displays which can distract drivers and add additional eyestrain. On screen controls on the instrument cluster and infotainment will be costly to fix compared to physical control knobs and buttons.
Nice review. Thanks goodness they got rid of the chrome trim on the Onyx model. It never made any sense with the black badging and wheels. I too am not a fan of virtual switches for frequently used controls, such as climate, drive modes, stop/start, etc. Fortunately, Subaru has updated the infotainment since this model and it is far better now. I am seriously considering ordering a 2023 Onyx XT. I love lifted wagons and the Outback is best in class, in my opinion, and it's a pretty good value as long as you don't go above this trim.
I agree . I’m leasing an ‘18 Outback and the beeps from Eyesight/cruise control are hard to live with on longer car trips. I drove it on a multi state 12 hour road trip with my family and my wife kept getting annoyed because the incessant beeps would keep her from having some rest/sleep....
I still think toyota is a leader in regard to cruise control, lane assist, etc. kia/hyundai is getting up there for the price, the options are really hard to beat. However for a dad dog wagon, i find these attractive, roomy, and safe. I wouldn’t be afraid to buy a outback, but there are competitors that do have my attention also for a reliable dog dad wagon
PS - You can turn down that bass. ;-) FWIW, they've updated the software a few times now since this review. The infotainment screen is now apparently now much faster and less laggy. Also, the lane keeping feature was improved a great deal, apparently, for 2022 and supposedly operates as well as most other brands versions. I look forward to trying it out on the 22 Onyx Edition XT (black) Outback that's due for delivery end of this month! I do not use it on my 2017 Impreza Sport, because as you said, it moves around in the lane and could make one get pulled on suspicion of DWI.
AFAIK, the Eyesight cruise control beeping can be turned off. In Forester, its the three bar button next to Cancel, surely same can be achieved in newer Outback. And it saves too, so you don't have to turn it off everytime you start the car. Entertainment wise, probably worth to check if there's any update to the software, most of the time (not just cars) - software updates fixed the lags straight out.
Every time I step into mine it takes me some time just to turn all automatic “intelligent” systems off. They are more of a hazard than a help. Also, long term, front rotors will warp if you are really having fun. If you can pass all that, is ALL fun.

Just a note when it comes to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen size in cars. That may not be the manufacturers fault since Google and Apple have to update those apps to be able to fit on larger touch screens/abnormal screen sizes and resolutions in cars.
@@devdude75 I was thinking the same thing, black chrome would look great for something considered ONYX. Stick to the nature of the name at least! I totally see where you're coming from man
i would have honestly set up the paddles on the wheel to increase engine braking when in D if you pull the gear down lever.. something like the increase in regen brake with the outlander phev. otherwise, there's not much point to them.
You briefly mentioned getting a base Outback as opposed to the Onyx early in the review. Does the 2.5L have enough guts to decently push this vehicle? I appreciate your viewpoint; many reviews Ive seen recommend the 2.4L motor.
I've bought this thing after watching your video. And I would like to tell you, that instead of whining about safety features that are beepping on you, it would be better you'd show people how ridiculously annoying those "eight simulated shifts" - that ruins the whole point of CVT.
there is now way the BRZ/86 will get a bigger displacement than the 2021 Supra 2.0L. At best, Subaru would/could stuff the 2.0L/FA20DIT from the WRX, but this 2.4L/ FA24DIT would be a no-go. In keeping with the pureness of the BRZ/86 philosophy, I could see a naturally aspirated 2.4L/FA24 engine based on the same block, but no turbo. How dare Toyota let another car in their lineup out Supra the Supra. The BRZ/86 needed more displacement from day one; a 2.2L/FA22 would have been nice to see.
Imagine if the infotainment system fails during a very hot summer. You won’t be able to turn on the air because there is no freaking buttons. They are cool when they are brand new but when they get old, the touch screen will be glitchy and eventually, it can break. I highly recommend Scotty Kilmer. He tells the truth about these modern piece of junks.
These systems are all pretty slow to start in the winter. Want to turn on your heated seats until the engine warms up? Often you’ll have to wait for the display to come on...
Totaled an outback XT 5 speed manual when I was 16 absolutely because (I was an idiot) of the crazy ride height and super soft suspension. With more experience, would have been an incredible driver's car, but she's a doozie for someone not used that
I have really appreciated your reviews of both the 2020 Ascent and this car. I have a question: WHY do you think that the Ascent drives so poorly.....and the Outback drives so much better.....when both have the exact same engine, turbo and CVT? You're not the only reviewer that the Ascent drives crazy. I want to buy one or the other.....and the Ascent thing is a REAL turn off! Any idea?
as a 2019 WRX owner, I disapprove of the center screen tablet setup :thumb down: the car would look more fantastic if it were 3 inches lower; if you catch what I'm saying (it wouldn't be an "outback" anymore...I wish Subaru would return to the road (focused) wagon and not the "I occasionally drive on a fire road" wagon. The Legacy GT wagon of 2005 was the perfect amount of ruggedness, functionality and sportiness; and best of all, it could be had with a manual transmission. Time for Subaru to release the Spec-B version and pay homage to BTCC racers of days gone by
If you’re gonna go almost all touchscreen, it better be as damn close to iPad responsiveness as it possibly can be. Otherwise, just give me real buttons. Also not a fan of Subaru’s active safety tech. Wayyyyyyy too overactive. Otherwise, I like some of the material choices on the interior and the performance with the 2.4T seems quite good.
Only "mega" screen that I've been impressed with so far is FCA's 12" uconnect. Its really fast, they kept lots of physical buttons around the screen, and you can split or use the whole screen if you need a bigol map and it works well w/ your phone.
Infotainments in cars take a while to catch up to modern smartphones and tablets. There are a lot of regulations these systems need to pass, including be able to operate and stay on in scorching temps that go beyond 100 Fahrenheit for extended periods (and in directly sunlight). These are conditions smartphones/tablets do not test for (and don’t need to). It’s like designing a super rugged computer that you know has enough of a buffer to safely operate even in extreme conditions. Hard to make something that’s very fast *and* rugged without splurging on costs. That said, it does seem like Subaru screwed up here. They should’ve stuck with a smaller screen if they couldn’t afford to design a more responsive infotainment at this size.
I asked the same question and it doesn't seem like this dude doesn't respond very often. I watched the interior part again but I didn't see the RF badging on either of the two front speakers, but I could've just missed it.
It actually quite good in the Onyx XT, I just picked on up a week ago. All my other cars are stick and more performance oriented so I appreciate what Subaru is trying to be (and also not trying to be). It’s effortless, quiet and efficient.
Is that what they are? Forester and Crosstrek don't seem very luxurious. I thought they were going for more of an outdoorsy, eco-friendly, safety vibe. Think Volvo + Prius + dog = Subaru.
Climate controls in a touchscreen are the worst thing ever. Physical knobs are so much better. Same with how the temp is shown i absolutely hate it showing the temp on the infotainment. Use a separate small lcd screen
Nevermind the beeps. What would drive me insane is the fake shifts from the CVT. Not to mention a $2 bearing that fails in it with 105k miles, and you have to drop 7 grand on a new one because it's too sensitive to repair. Even if you do get lucky with the trans, you gotta deal with oil burning, oil dilution, carbon buildup, and finally the head gasket wearing out. All that to deal with a gas pedal more touchy than a psycho chihuahua, and that dreadful shift lag between drive and reverse. I owned a 2018, I took a 4 grand hit on depreciation after 2k miles to ditch that thing. God I hate Subarus so much.
Update: Subaru pushed a software update that now allows CarPlay to take up the entire center portion of the screen in a much more useful square layout. And there's a persistent button for Auto Start/Stop at the bottom of the screen. Really improves it

No more hood struts huh? I love that about my 2019. I wonder if theres an aftermarket option
1st: Chameleon Sunday (70s porno one)
2nd: Ga$ Money (Listened to by people in Challengers with the seat leaned wayyyyyyy back)
3rd: Ganja by Ooyy (That one thats pretty good as well but not as good as Pink Mirrors)
4th: Pink Mirrors (The OG)
Subaru finally made CVT that’s works like Automatic trans thank you Subaru
Touch screen responsiveness is often made better at the cost of durability. A car touch screen has to last much longer than the typical phone screen.
Born and raised in the same are you do the videos. Been living out west for a little while now but I still get the cringe each time you drive over the holes. Somethings scar you for life lol
Just a note when it comes to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen size in cars. That may not be the manufacturers fault since Google and Apple have to update those apps to be able to fit on larger touch screens/abnormal screen sizes and resolutions in cars.
the new subaru software update makes apple full screen, and the new ios 14 positions the dock on the bottom, no luck for android though
Love these videos
1:25 - "... it's actually very nice. its soft to the touch, very durable. It's quiet nice, I wouldn't mind putting the dog back here" 😂😂🤣
ONYX EDITION:
Has all that disgusting chrome around the windows...WHY IS IT NOT BLACK? Lol
Honda Civic Si does the same thing its all blacked out except the windows are chrome. Its cancer.
Husky Dinosaur totally know what you're talking about. I don't understand how these "professional" designers do things like this. No taste.
@@devdude75 I was thinking the same thing, black chrome would look great for something considered ONYX. Stick to the nature of the name at least! I totally see where you're coming from man
Trey Darkis I don't think so. My 2015 Subaru Impreza CVT has black window trim. And it's in Jasmine Green haha
A lot of we owners black out that chrome. But you’re right, it doesn’t fit the Onyx.
i would have honestly set up the paddles on the wheel to increase engine braking when in D if you pull the gear down lever.. something like the increase in regen brake with the outlander phev. otherwise, there's not much point to them.
touchscreen speed probably has something to do with the processing power and storage speed. maybe it cost more to make it more snappy.
Great review
You briefly mentioned getting a base Outback as opposed to the Onyx early in the review. Does the 2.5L have enough guts to decently push this vehicle? I appreciate your viewpoint; many reviews Ive seen recommend the 2.4L motor.
I rented an Onyx. It was great. This dude is full of it.
Impressive! You can hear the car screaming when it hits that bump in the corner lol

I've bought this thing after watching your video. And I would like to tell you, that instead of whining about safety features that are beepping on you, it would be better you'd show people how ridiculously annoying those "eight simulated shifts" - that ruins the whole point of CVT.
brz’s next engine?? 🤞🏼
yes! it’s been confirmed. the next gen BRZ/86 is gonna be on the toyota TNGA platform

there is now way the BRZ/86 will get a bigger displacement than the 2021 Supra 2.0L.
@@K03sport I'm betting on the turbo FA20 too.
thank you! 🌹
That touchscreen is a dealbreaker for me...
Nice car, shame its a cvt
cvt transmissions are the worst
I love it.
I'd love to have one with a manual.
The base model has two short touchscreen. I work at a dealership so there’s your answer.👍🏻
Mcneal Willie not sure to be honest with you.
Glad you're still making videos for us to enjoy. Thanks TheTopher
PS: Any updates on your GX?
I need to film an update soon! Not much to talk about, it’s a reliable tank
@@TheTopher That she is.. I have the 1st Gen., Therefore not as fancy as yours, but still a workhorse.
How would you compare the CVT in Outback to the SPT used in WRX GT?
Was that an accident behind you in the traffic lanes at around 18:00 in? Sounded nasty
Did you test the stereo? Love the ONYX but lots of people say the stereo is total junk und difficult to upgrade
Totaled an outback XT 5 speed manual when I was 16 absolutely because (I was an idiot) of the crazy ride height and super soft suspension. With more experience, would have been an incredible driver's car, but she's a doozie for someone not used that
my dream is to have an outback and a crosstrek
I have really appreciated your reviews of both the 2020 Ascent and this car. I have a question: WHY do you think that the Ascent drives so poorly.....and the Outback drives so much better.....when both have the exact same engine, turbo and CVT? You're not the only reviewer that the Ascent drives crazy. I want to buy one or the other.....and the Ascent thing is a REAL turn off! Any idea?
Crosstrek or Outback as an everyday driver for one person who likes little off-road for skiing and hiking? Image matters.
as a 2019 WRX owner, I disapprove of the center screen tablet setup :thumb down: the car would look more fantastic if it were 3 inches lower; if you catch what I'm saying (it wouldn't be an "outback" anymore...I wish Subaru would return to the road (focused) wagon and not the "I occasionally drive on a fire road" wagon. The Legacy GT wagon of 2005 was the perfect amount of ruggedness, functionality and sportiness; and best of all, it could be had with a manual transmission. Time for Subaru to release the Spec-B version and pay homage to BTCC racers of days gone by
You can adjust the bass, bro
“Let’s go to a shadier spot so we can see the infotainment system” is not a good sign for your infotainment system
I agree, but I think it's just for the camera, it's gonna catch all the little reflections and refractions and make it hard to see.
Can also just close the moonroof shade
That touch screen makes this model outdated already...
How?
@@treece6638 yeah how? wtf.lol. I have a RAM 1500 with the 12 inch touchsreen. Are you going to tell me that is outdated?
Harris some people like you need to know what outdated is really classified as, sure it is a poor unit, but it isn’t outdated.
Subaru’s UI of the infotainment system is so so bad. Subaru may need to hire a 3rd party professional car infotainment UI design to help them.
I'm learning a new browser. I just installed chrome, which is going to replace internet exploder for me!
I wonder if they've fixed the oil consumption issue some subbies have.
I prefer this
This is definitely a stupid question, but the riding seat position is higher than being in a sedan right?
On the next Subaru, the push to start button won’t exist anymore. It will be in the touchscreen device. Watch. Lol.
Speaking of touchscreen and vehicle ignitions, you should look up Apple CarKey. Pretty interesting stuff.
I was waiting you to do a video on it but I bought it before you made the video lol
how's the road noise compared to the crosstrek?
Is the sound system the base or with the RF option?
Does the sound system is signed by Harman Kardon?
Schöner Subaru 😊👍👍👍🇩🇪
I literally was looking at these yesterday...... I didnt even know you had reviewed one BAHAHAH.
The Subaru Outback AWD
My rear wheel get clinch sounds deodar said it’s the sway bar endlink 😅my car only run 2000 km 3 month new😂
Did this Outback have the upgraded Rockford Fosgate system or just the base?
I asked the same question and it doesn't seem like this dude doesn't respond very often. I watched the interior part again but I didn't see the RF badging on either of the two front speakers, but I could've just missed it.
real cool car !!! nice music!
22:51 what song is that
Nvm its: Xavy Rusan - Ga$ Money
Change car man if the beeps freak you out it’s one hell of a car I love it and your personal opinion is just personal
Love subarus hate cvts =(
It actually quite good in the Onyx XT, I just picked on up a week ago. All my other cars are stick and more performance oriented so I appreciate what Subaru is trying to be (and also not trying to be). It’s effortless, quiet and efficient.
smooth
Subaru used to be something. But once they tried to be a mid-class luxury brand, it all went downhill
Is that what they are? Forester and Crosstrek don't seem very luxurious. I thought they were going for more of an outdoorsy, eco-friendly, safety vibe. Think Volvo + Prius + dog = Subaru.
The beeps for the car showing up in front of the car CAN be turned off.
Climate controls in a touchscreen are the worst thing ever. Physical knobs are so much better. Same with how the temp is shown i absolutely hate it showing the temp on the infotainment. Use a separate small lcd screen
Hows the sound system? Does this come with the harmon kardon?
The Onyx Edition XT does not come with the HK system.
what's that beautiful place!?
whats the next daily for you? :)
i looked and it seems like that screen is standard. F
The turbo charged is very quiet
Nice car
