Your flies are so beautiful. I am fully convinced with every video, that you can tie any fly ever created. I have only been tying for a very short time 3 years. When I first started tying the local fly shop told me to seek out youtube for tips and tutorials. Your videos were among the first I found. With the help of your videos I easily started tying flies that were well out of the skill of the ordinary tyer with my same time at the bench.
I started out with a Regal Vise. Got it used for around $40.00 USD. I've probably tied over 1,000 flies with it and it has been a great vise to use. I'm ready to bump up to the next level and plan on saving it for my son who will one day tie side by side with me. Tight lines - Michael
Davie thank you for your speedy reply. I do order most of my supplies the same dealer and I buy more than I can afford so I will ask him for the larges eyes he can supply. thanks again for your reply and most of all for your wonderful fly tying videos. all the best bill
If your in the US then Basspro has a good true rotation vise for $80.00. I bought it and loved it. I only had it for about two week before I hit hard times and took it back.Best vise I've used so far.
Davie. Either one of those variations you showed would be killer patterns here. Most every fly I use are those color combinations. I will be looking to add jungle cock to the patterns I tie and see if they're more productive. Thanks Davie. 👍✌🙏
Another excellent video davie, you make it look so easy.I have a few question's 1st who make's the super glue you are using.2nd when fishing reservoir's in the UK what fly/fly's would you not leave home without and what would class as your blank buster?
Right Davie, Back to square one. I have replayed this vid over & over, glad to say ,"I got it". I found the quill that you tied with, but nowhere near the quality that yours is!! Could you possibly point out to me,please, your supplier. Its got to be better than the one I`m using. Or possibly there are different grades! Thanks again , Ray Woody
Hi Dave I've just recently gotten into the flytying-game. And to start off with i bought a starter-kit. The problem is that the vise isnt of very good quality. So i was wondering if you could recommend any good ones? (Not too expensive, as im still a student). Thanks And also: Love all the amazing videos! You've helped me alot with very helpful techniques and good patterns.
Dave I have found a great place to get Kamasan hooks shipped to america reasonably. What would you suggest as you top five or ten styles to give me a great range of flies I can tie and in what sizes should I get them. I'm making my Christmas list and it would be a big help. ps you are the best on RUclips
Hi Davie, I just have learned so much from watching your videos. Thanks for taking the time to teach. My question is what kind of wax do you use on your finger? And where might a guy get some? Thanks so much, dbshu1234
Thanks davie ive never used fulling mill ones before but want to try something new and I thought that was a great deal assuming there the real deal. Anyways cheers for the advice and another question will you be at the glasgow angling centre open day next weekend?
Hey Davie, I really enjoy you teaching me some fantastic patterns. I believe its size and patern that works on the water, I don't believe olour is an issue….Like, do we know that fish can define colour?? Whats your view?? All the best David.
Hi David, I would say the size and the way the fly is being fished and presented is very important but I'd say colour is just as important too. The first time I experienced the importance of the colour of a fly I was using was within the first year or two of starting fly fishing..I was fishing dries on the river early in the season when there was a good hatch of light olive duns, it was a bright day and the fish took the olive pattern that I had tied in which I landed many fish.. It fished so well that I went back down the river the next day but the weather was much different it being very dull with no sun around at all. The same flies were hatching so I naturally put on the same fly from the day before thinking they would take it just as well but the fish were not interested at all so I tied on a grey version of the olive dun which I had tied up and straight away the fish came to the fly. So the famous saying bright fly for a bright day and a grey fly for the dull day made sense to me from then on and I have had many other days like this since then so I would definitely say that at times colour is very important. I hope this helps you in some way.. All the very best Davie
Thanks for your reply Davie…..I do remember my late father talk many times about a bright fly for a bright day and a grey fly for the dull day, I thought he meant the tones of the fly, like all warm colours(red, yellow, orange) are bright and cold colours (blue, black, brown) are dark, similar to B&W photography. One more thing, where can I get a spool of 2mm ploythene wrap for the nymph body its very difficult to source on ebay or other sites. Thanks again Davie.
Hi David, I bought my polythene wrap from Sparton Tackle(Steve Sparton) but I don't see in on his website anymore..Here is a link just incase I didn't see it.. www.xov83.dial.pipex.com/catalogue/synthetic.htm All the very best Davie
I have always tied this fly with peacock herl, and then ribbed with a wire or tinsel of any colour.. i would love to use peacock eyes like you do Davie, but trying to get hold of any LARGE eyes is impossible... if anyone knows where these can be obtained, please let me know! Thanks, Geoff
Alright davie was just on a site and seen fulling mill nymph hooks barbless ones for £21 per 1000 and was just wondering if you have ever used them :-) many thanks
Hello Davie, it feels a bit redundant to tell you again how impressive your focus to efficiency and simplicity is, but nonetheless it always is one of your many fine traits. I was wondering on the second fly you showed at the end. Did you build up a bead head versus the dubbing thorax with UV resin or something else?
Davie I have several peacock eyes and none of them have the quality of the quills your showing for this pattern, I live in the desert so I have to order my supplies on line, do the quality quills go to the commercial tiers?
Hi Davie, I cannot seem to find (anywhere) those nice Quills that you are using,as on this "river Diawl Bach". I fish loads of small patterns, usually with Peacock Herl, but using Quill I don't seem to be able to get that effect where the "hairy portion" stand out ,as in your super example! Any help would be amazing, Rgds, Ray
Hi Ray, I can look through many peacock eyes to find the ones I want, if there was a 100 eyes you would find 40% would be ok. Just look at the back of the eye and press the quill flat and if they are light in colour then these are the to buy... All the very best Davie
Hi Davie, Great video as usual, thank you a lot! I had one question though: I love Diawl Bach's, and tie quite a few of them, but cant seem to get the throat to stand out like that, it always lies flat against the body. i've tried making a turn behind it to pop it up a bit but no success. I assume it all comes down to technique, but should you know a trick for this, i'd be happy to hear it. Best regards, Thomas

Been meaning to ask, Davie, what is your vise?
What is that tool you're using to get the thread on at 1:35 ?
