Cave Story was literally a game made entirely of passion and love for gamers. No corporate greed nor deadlines. And the result was truly a masterpiece.
Props to his friend to snap Amaya-san to bravely say which parts weren't fun. It's legit that easy to spot a problem, don't lie to yourself if something "isn't fun", if something feels like a slog then that needs fixing in design.
Sad that a lot of people dont really know about Cave Story anymore and its fallen into obscurity, very happy though I got to play it in my younger formative years on wiiware and it means all the more to me now with how much it paved the way for. It's really hard not to feel creatively inspired by Daisuke
Yeah, it's kinda sad especially because of how massively influential this game was to today's entire indie scene. I basically owe my passion for game dev to this game and Daisuke's own passion to make something great. This is somewhat unrelated, but I also find it weird that out of all the series that could be represented in Smash, Cave Story is nowhere to be seen yet it's possibly one of the most important games of all time, PLUS it's a Japanese game which is usually a no brainer for them.
It's sad, I think there's two reasons. One, the + version is $30 on Switch which is really steep considering the games age and competing games like Fez, Hollow Knight, Cuphead and Shovel Knight. Two, message boards are gone and now people are congregating around websites which want to please their advertisers - ie game studios putting out AAA games - and websites that want to be addictive and only show "new" things like reddit and social media. So people are no longer aware of the free version.
The most impressive part to me is that one guy absolutely nailed it in every department. The art, the music, the sounds, the gameplay, the story, the cuteness, the fun... everything.
I've been trying to find the name of this game for a year or so now because I remembered I used to play an action platformer in like 2nd or 3rd grade... I absolutely loved Cave Story as a kid, and surprisingly I remembered the enemies better than the protagonist haha. I plan on buying this for pc in a few days and replaying it because there are so many memories linked to this game for me. It's crazy how something seemingly small, like a video game, can have such a large impact on me.
Fun fact: my dad played the "Beta" version of Cave Story and worked on the og Cave Story website (which doesn't exist anymore sadly) God, hearing Cave Story's ost in this vid makes me feel nostalgic

Cave Story along side OneShot are the games that got me into Game Development, I currently am making a full game that I hope to finish someday. It’s been going really well! Not much is shown on my pages as I want it to be kinda like a surprise. But I hope people will enjoy it if I ever finish it!!!
Very well! currently starting a revision to make the game look more of something I can call my own. A lot has changed since when I posted this comment looking back... Some major stuff I did were adding features like inventory, choices, phone calls, speedrun timer, water physics, and being able to hold objects. Recently I rebuilt the dialog system from the ground up, making it much more customizable. The rough story is complete! Slowly but surely getting the games functionalities done!
Oh didn't expect a answer this soon Well good for you. What you added are fundamental stuff (expect the water physics or choices) but without them a game isn't a game haha, so good luck on your own, and expect failure, that's the key for not stressing too much. Irorically I didn't know you were a famous youtuber and I was even sure you had given up, in the end it's the opposite and you motivated me a bit to get into gamedev and make a isometric game
I remember discovering Cave Story on the Wii Shop channel. It had a demo so of course i started playing it. It blew my mind how an old game like this was really well made, and when i discovered he released the game for free; I quickly played it on my windows xp. Simpler times back then.
Favorite version is Cave Story + on the 3DS eshop. It uses 3D-2D graphics which look great on the 3DS. The 3D effect of the 3DS is super underrated in my opinion.
i only ever got to play the demo on my wii as a kid. ofc ive played a lot more of it now, it will always have a place in my heart, so nastolgic, so mesmerizing and captivating. just a perfect game.
Started my first playthrough last night, about 2h in - it feels great to play, really happy that I gave it a shot on my Steam Deck. It was free on Epic many weeks ago, I grabbed it then and I am so glad I did...
I absolutely love your impeccable execution of these phenomenal mini documentaries!!!! :000 You deliver loads of in-depth information in such a clean and unique way!! :> I'm so glad to have found your channel :3 Keep on doing what you're doing, and let's see you hit 100k subs!!!
I used to play this game as a Demo on the Wii. I was oddly in love with this game, there was just something about it I had always been drawn to. 7 years later I still feel the same. The music, characters, and concept was just really appealing. I can remember loving the character Sue. She was cute. Nowadays I think Curly Brace is the coolest.
love the videos and glad to see cave story get some love. thank you for sharing! amaya's journey in not only game development but art, music, and everything else has been very influential and inspirational to me.
It's so cool to think of the legendary legacy this game holds to it. It's amazing that even now it's still entirely standalone, with no sequel or anything... although, as much as I like the idea, I think the story CS tells was well concluded at it's end. I'd say it would be better if it was more just another story entirely set in the same world, not like an actual sequel with the same characters and protagonists and all. But hey, who knows where we may finally see the story go next? Amaya himself may not even know yet XD
I recently played through Cave Story 3D because I had homebrew and wanted to give it a shot. I did not expect it to get really dark extremely quickly, especially with some of the characters potentially dying in heart-wrenching ways. I haven't gotten the third ending, unfortunately (because I forgot to fully restore the memory of a certain character before I beat the Doctor), but it's surprisingly really easy to replay. My only gripe is that you don't get to go back to the other zones once you've saved at the end of the story, but that's pretty much it. Cave Story has to be one of the craziest and most unique experiences I've had, despite it being somewhat short.
I first played this game as a kid because there was a demo of it for the wii. I loved it so much that I begged my parents until they finally bought it for me. It always stuck with me even though I'm really bad at bullet hell games like this or Touhou. But, unlike Touhou, this game was so enchanting to me in a way that I didn't quite understand at the time, or even now. I just really loved everything about it. He wanted someone to feel something from his game, and I absolutely did.
I still havent got the true ending to Cave Story+ I LOVED the game. And it was a great experience. I should probably get back to it soon. But still one developer made a single masterpiece, brilliant
One of my frustrations with the remakes of Cave Story is actually how little control he has over it anymore due to Nicalis' litigous nature, as I found out while making mods for the game such as a soundtrack cover based on the original version's music. This was back in like 2014, separate from the litigation you mentioned, as I was modding the freeware version. When I spoke to Pixel regarding the soundtrack, he confirmed it was licensed to Nicalis, not owned, and that working on the freeware version should be okay.
Love your videos dude! Ever since I saw your Celeste and Undertale videos I was hoping for a Cave Story video, so I’m so happy to see it! Maybe you could do a video on the game A Short Hike?
I initially downloaded this game as a homebrew game someone put on PSP, but I didn't give it much of a chance because the intro stage wasn't friendly enough to me. Now, I feel bad for doing that, and I'm going to look for the game and properly play it on my PC.
thank you for making this video! this sure brings back happy memories. really appreciate how you also went into the newer versions of the game, since I didn't know much about them having only played the PC versions. cave story will always be one of my favorite games, and I wish more people could enjoy it as much as I have
I was gonna comment "What about Cave Story's Secret Santa?" but then I looked it up and that actually came after your video? I guess I just figured it came out longer ago because Cave Story is a very old game and it's been nearly a year since Secret Santa came out which in relative time can mean anywhere from "a few months ago" to "3 years ago"
An interesting idea for a video you could make, can be something like "net yaroze, the first ever indie game community and where they are now" where you talk about the net yaroze, its games and where their developers are nowadays. Also, if you want to focus on history of indie games for now, I suggest lisa: the painful and suits:a buisness rpg

Cave Story along side OneShot are the games that got me into Game Development, I currently am making a full game that I hope to finish someday. It’s been going really well! Not much is shown on my pages as I want it to be kinda like a surprise. But I hope people will enjoy it if I ever finish it!!!
Hey just curious
Now that a year has passed
How's your development going ?
Very well! currently starting a revision to make the game look more of something I can call my own.
Oh didn't expect a answer this soon
Well good for you.
I'll try, thank you! So happy to hear that last part!
this is actually pretty cool that his codebase from 90's is still used
I remember discovering Cave Story on the Wii Shop channel. It had a demo so of course i started playing it. It blew my mind how an old game like this was really well made, and when i discovered he released the game for free; I quickly played it on my windows xp. Simpler times back then.
some of the old weapon designs from the beta looked really cool
I wish we had access to the beta sprites
so I learnt that Cave Story Encore remade some of the beta weapons, but aren't in the game yet
Played this before it made it to any consoles. Incredible game. Still like to play it once in awhile.
There's nothing better than seeing a new Glen video in your sub box keep up the great work
Thank you, will do!
Favorite version is Cave Story + on the 3DS eshop. It uses 3D-2D graphics which look great on the 3DS. The 3D effect of the 3DS is super underrated in my opinion.
i only ever got to play the demo on my wii as a kid. ofc ive played a lot more of it now, it will always have a place in my heart, so nastolgic, so mesmerizing and captivating. just a perfect game.
this game will always have a spot in my heart. true classic
Very sad to hear about the DMCAs, Cave Story deserves to be enjoyed by all. Freeware is beautiful ❤️
Anyone vastly prefer the sprites from the original version? Something about the simplicity just looks much more clean and timeless to me.
Started my first playthrough last night, about 2h in - it feels great to play, really happy that I gave it a shot on my Steam Deck. It was free on Epic many weeks ago, I grabbed it then and I am so glad I did...
I'm junior/mid weight dev working solo on my 1st game since coding school. This channel keeps me going swear down
Love the animation and how you put everything together with the inspirational story! Great job as always
Great quality video as usual and a great game to cover on top of that. Cant wait to see what you talk about next!
Much appreciated! Next video is about a game in a genre that I haven’t done before :D
Well it's giving me a confidence boost on keep making my game
I absolutely love your impeccable execution of these phenomenal mini documentaries!!!! :000
You deliver loads of in-depth information in such a clean and unique way!! :>
I'm so glad to have found your channel :3
Keep on doing what you're doing, and let's see you hit 100k subs!!!
Thank you so much! Always awesome to read comments like yours, glad to have you aboard the channel :D More videos are definitely coming!
My pleasure, glad to hear you enjoy the videos!
Thank you for covering Cave Story, it was a game I really wanted to know about its development!
Fantastic video! You did a really good job curating information about Cave Story's development and history. Still one of my top 5 games!
Just discovered this channel- these videos are so well done!
Thank you, glad to hear you like them!
This is so interesting!
I really like your style of videos, they are just satisfying really!
I hope you have fun researching this stuff :v
Definitely, the channel is my passion project! And glad to hear you like the videos!
Appreciate you uploading at 1440p!
I loved this game when I stumbled upon it. Man, that was well over a decade ago, now.
Fun fact. The name Undertale is a play on the name Cave Story
Yooo! Been waiting for this since I started watching the series. Cave Story is my favorite indie game. Rivals of Aether next?
I've played this game on steam/PC, switch, 3DS and WiiU ... god I love this game
I had no idea Kero Blaster was made by the creator of Cave Story, it makes sense tho
Really love the game. Probably one of my favourite games of all time. Got into it because someone uploaded a piano medley of the OST.
Idea for a video: (cause it’s one of my favorite games) “Hue”, released in 2016.
Thanks for the great content man!
My pleasure and I'll look into Hue!
i searched it and oh boy is it going on my to-play list
Back when i was a kid, i got the free demo for Cave Story on my wii and the opening area really freaked me out.
Love your videos dude!
Ever since I saw your Celeste and Undertale videos I was hoping for a Cave Story video, so I’m so happy to see it!
Maybe you could do a video on the game A Short Hike?
Glad to hear you like them! And thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look into A Short Hike!
I initially downloaded this game as a homebrew game someone put on PSP, but I didn't give it much of a chance because the intro stage wasn't friendly enough to me. Now, I feel bad for doing that, and I'm going to look for the game and properly play it on my PC.
thank you for making this video! this sure brings back happy memories. really appreciate how you also went into the newer versions of the game, since I didn't know much about them having only played the PC versions. cave story will always be one of my favorite games, and I wish more people could enjoy it as much as I have
(Talking about indie games)
“We need to go back to 1996”
Touhou Highly Responsive to Prayers!?
One of the best games I've ever played in my entire life.
Excellent video as per usual! If you do any more Metroidvanias Axiom Verge would be an interesting one to see
Thank you! Axiom Verge is on my list ;)
I find it hard to believe he didn't understand at least some music theory. The soundtrack is amazing.
You always make such great videos. I stumbled on your Stardew Valley video a year ago. I'd never heard of the game back then. I liked your video so much that I immediately bought the game, and it's now one of my favorites.
Glad to hear you like the videos! And so awesome to hear you discovered Stardew Valley! Such a relaxing and amazing game, everyone should at least give it a try so I'm glad you did :D
Killing off the Mimikyu's was a major dick move, even if it DID later inspire the creation of _Made In Abyss_ >:(
Oh dear lord, what a geek. Hurts just to look at him
