Corrections (Thank you to everyone pointing these out): At 1:42 I say that the spur line is not in use, it still is in use by the steelworks that currently occupy the site. At 3:25 Salisbury is spelt incorrectly. At 7:12 the Beenleigh and Tennyson lines met at South Coast Junction (Yeerongpilly) not Boggo Junction (Dutton Park), Boggo Junction is further north where the Wooloongabba branch split off from the line that goes to South Bank station. A few people pointed out that I am pronouncing Nyanda incorrectly as it is pronounced Nigh - anda not Nee - anda, apologies for this.
The spur line is also standard guage, which I always found very confusing until I learnt that it was specifically for the delivery of steel. Since that steel is coming from down south, having the spur be standard gauge saves having to transfer it to a narrow gauge train at Acacia Ridge for the sake of an additional few km of travel.
Well done. Your impression of Michael Berkman was spot on😆 The Tennyson line is useful - my train to Oxley has been diverted through there a couple of times over the years due to issues between the City and Corinda, but as you say, there isn't much of an argument for reopening the old station. I must admit I'd never heard of Gloucester Street, even though I've ridden past it many times. Excellent work - hope to see more Brisbane rail stuff from you in the future.
I was walking by the Nyandu station site just a couple weeks ago, was thinking I needed to look it up. Thanks for saving me the trouble 😁 Great video, glad to see QR finally getting the attention it deserves. Triumph of Narrow Gauge!
I worked as a security guard on the suberban rail network. I was on the Tennyson line at one point, guarding unlocked doors, with no platform. Very interesting video. Thank you for this piece of history preserved.
Good video, as a former nearby resident of the old Nyanda station and now the Tennyson station, it's cool to see some of the history put put there to the world. I definitely feel the most needed public transport in the Tennyson area would be a citycat, with stops at the tennis centre, the northern end of Yeronga and then to the UQ station, there is a hazard of rocks on the eastern banks near the Eleanor schonell bridge but the rest of the river down to the walter taylor bridge is deeper and wider than some of the other parts of the river serviced.
Another interesting and entertaining video, with the production values going up a notch! You've reminded me of train drivers saying "Doboy.. Doboy station" years ago
I’m not a spoon, but I’m really enjoying your channel - looking forward to when the next one comes out. So much so that I’m ringing the bell for the first time ever 😮😂
Thank you so much for this wonderful insight into Brisbane's rail network. History is fascinating to me. It creates a big picture for me as to how we all got to where we are today. Thanks again. See you on the next one. Take care 👍🏽.
Great video again. Well done guys. You made it interesting and you made some great points, AND you used the word "unique" correctly - awesome and unusual for your generation. The simulated interview? Now THAT was funny! Great job.
Great video. Answered many of the questions I had after riding on the line for the first time a few months ago during south Brisbane track closures. Keep up the great work. Not a bad video yet
The Tennyson line was insanely useful on the off chance your Beenleigh or Ipswich line got routed through it during peak hour. I lived with a woman who was able to catch a train to work at Southbank without changing trains or going through the CBD.
It would cut so much time to have the Tennyson line operational for those going to Ipswich from Beenleigh. No more going all the way to Southbank/Roma to change over. It's annoying not having a direct station for the Tennis centre. I know other countries use a V shape track to allow trains into Tennyson and back to the City/Gold Coast line.
Actually there are triangles on both ends of the Tennyson line, allowing trains to move from either Moorooka or Yeerongpilly to Sherwood or Corinda and vice versa. Empty trains utilise these movements on a regular basis.
Thanks for the video. I've ridden the Tennyson line a couple of times including by a 2000 set, and I'm pretty sure by the ICE with the most recent in 1999 when it was used for diverted Ipswich line services which happened to coincide with a visit to Brissy.. So keeping the line open is a vital link. Re-opening the station is another matter entirely.
Don't forget, the Merivale bottleneck disappears with Cross River Rail - but you still have the three track bottleneck which causes all manner of issues.
I lived across the street from the Tennyson train station growing up in the late 90's, the station wasn't in use but everything remained powered and useable. Very nostalgic and fun times pranking the emergency box. My family then moved 2min from the Rocklea train station, always cool seeing the history of the station and the spur line that cuts off into the steel factory. I know they utilised the line before 2016 but no idea after that.
I was lucky to take the Tennyson loop when I was visiting a few months back due to track closures for CRR. A positive of not experiencing the full network functioning.
Really informative, love this video. Potential other videos (if you haven’t already) Has there ever been a suggestion to link Loganholme / Carbrook to Thornlands all the way to Chandler / Capalaba ? Also, expanding the Springfield line. Both regions have a nice allotment of land to build upon & are planned growth areas. If you build it, they will come.

great video dude, one tip I would recommend try and keep the mic at a steady distance from ya mouth and far enough away to not pick up your breathing, then when editing just boost ya audio to get the best from the voice. Also a fuzzy wind guard on the mic will help. Or just get a body mic.
Awesome video dude, I'm a big fan of Australian rail infrastructure and seeing this kind of content is always appreciated. I did have a quick question about Mayne Station, while you and online resources have specified that it's located near the Ferny Grove grade, while travelling north from Bowen Hills, I've seen what has to be the remnants of a station platform running directly underneath the ICB, any idea on what this might be?
With Tennyson, I think reopening the station isn't necessary. And there is actually room at Yeerongpilly, inbetween the most western track and the second most western there is room for one more platform, and the second most western track isn't used by the gold coast service as it directly goes into tennyson itself. So it is completely possible to reopen Tennyson, and due to short distance could come every 10 minutes and only demand one train. Meanwhile Corinda already has a platform specifically for it.
i think tennyson could be used in the future if it was underground using an east west route or a city circle loop or a future metro system. Keep up the great work.
I seem to remember during Expo getting a direct service from Auchenflower to Vulture Street/South Brisbane via the Tennyson line. I could be making this up because I turned 18 that year and was pissed for most of it.
The WTT for the 1988 Expo (reports.oldstuff.online/tt/qld/ttq88WTTsuburban.pdf) indicates there were several services taking the route you described - seems to be 9:17am, 10:17am and 11:17am weekday departures from Central.
You are definitely correct I can assure you. There were regular services from Ipswich than ran via Corinda -Tennyson-Yeerongpilly to Expo. Even prior to the Expo, one direct service from Ipswich to Bowen Hills ran via Tennyson in the morning peak, while in the afternoon peak the "Ipswich via South Brisbane" train departed Central at 4.49pm each weekday.
Former Planner here, one of the primary reasons for the closure of Tennyson was to free up slots on the Ipswich line and the Beenleigh line, the Tennyson line took up much needed slots in order to boost the frequency on the Beenleigh and Ipswich lines (and Merivale Bridge), as turnback factors need to be taken into account.
A fascinating piece of history - there's something about Mayne station that kind of weirdly appeals? (mayb cause it's completely gone - or is it?) keep up the great work!
This may already be said in other comments but first time to your channel...thanks youtube algorithm...ive subscribed after this video....that Tennyson (spell check) Line seems like a simple but likely expensive fix....all the land is there...rip up the track, make it a Tennyson Busway. Wouldnt have to reclaim any land and folks can get to the olympic tennis courts.
It ain't being ripped up when the Tennyson line is still being used for freight. Thats $$$$ of track access fees from the private freight operators to QR's coffers.
The city network needs an aggressive overhaul, as I have frequented Sydney. They overhauled their own train network, 4 tracks, inner two are for station stopping and the outer two are for express. And they have only kept a couple of historical stations, where the rest have been knocked down with overhead station with stair and lift access. But what do you expect when it has been privatised with no competition, I can foresee an aggressive upgrade at the last minute to accommodate the Olympic visitors.
Great effort. Lots of work in this video. Just so you know, "fair use" will satisfy RUclips's decision makers when it comes to copyrighted material repurposed in your videos, as it's based on US copyright law, but Australian copyright law (among other countries') does not have such a thing. So while you shouldn't have issues with RUclips, it's still possible to run into issues if someone has a problem with you using their intellectual property and the laws of the country they're based in don't have free use provisions. Of course you're absolutely unlikely to run into such issues, but it's good to be aware that there's always that risk.
It's refreshing to see an enthusiast acknowledge that a random publically pushed proposal is far more complicated then it seems. Too often people seem to think you can just add more trains to an existing track and everything will be fine, but it is rarely that simple. In instance I saw a facebook commenter try to claim that the Longlea station relocation was a waste of money, and that the government could be reactivating the Beaudesert branch line for the same cost..... Just to expand on the quad track issue, this is something that simply has to be addressed when you look at the strategic long-term planning of the network, but even this doesn't make room for Tennyson. While there is no clear timeline, passanger services on the flagstone corridor is about as inevitable as the Redcliffe line. I mean that entirely unironically. It may be 10 years, 20 years, 50 years before we get there, but that's actually the reality of most major transit corridors (including major highways/motorways). They can exist conceptually for decades before serious planning occurs. Thing is, we're already running those 3 tracks to death, and once the flagstone line happens, that's a whole other service to add to the mix. And of course by the time we get that done, i am sure the expectation will be that Beenliegh and Gold Coast trains are even more frequent in the off peak time periods than they are now, so 3 tracks may not even be enough for the future of the current services. So its not really a case of adding a 4th track for Tennyson, because that hypotehtical 4th track is already needed for the hypothetical demands of more frequent existing services and potential future services to Flagstone. As for the shuttle option, yeah nah its just a bad idea. Here is a very simple litnus test for any rail proposal: could you achieve similar results with a bus? Thats not an endorsement of the current bus service, I dont think it's adequate. But if you were to run a set shuttle bus service, with 3 stop emulating the rail route, I believe you would achieve avout the same outcome as a shuttle train. I can see use in services that run beyond a shuttle set up, linking Ipswich to Beenleigh, or Beenleigh to the city via Indooroopilly, but if we're just doing a shuttle from Yeerongpilly to Corinda, you dont need a train for that.
Very interesting. Its hard to describe the feeling I get when researching stuff like this. Its not nostalgia because Ive never been on or used these stations at all (I've certainly ridden been past some of them without knowing countless times). Melancholy? I don't know, but good video regardless!
I did my apprenticeship at the rocklea station one , I literally never realised it was a station but I must have driven past a million times and never realised. That round about in the wet is a dangerous one 😂
It’s also worth noting that part of the reason the Tennyson line closed was because other than low ridership, the shuttle train also did get in the way of freight trains coming in from out west which were going to the port.
I used that station when I went to Salisbury high back in 1978 just before it got taken away, a lot of school students use to catch the train from there rather then Salisbury station.
I went to high school by steam train in the late 60’s. Nyanda was a platform without a station office or even waiting shed from memory. However when Salisbury State High had 1500 students there was an ocean of maroon shirted students heading south on that platform as there were no high schools down that way until you get to Beenleigh although I think Sunnybank High must have been opened by then. The Gloucester St station was also there between Vulture St (now called Southbank) and Park Road. It’s hard to see riding in the train now as it is hidden between two hills unless you remember it as it was but it was pretty cute even in those days.
The Nyanda overpass was a level crossing elimination project that failed to eliminate the level crossing. And no mention of old Bowen Hills station? The Up platform and ramp up to Campbell Street are still mostly there.
There used to be a Thorroldtown station between Wooloowin and Eagle Junction. It got closed because those two stations are pretty close together, and another one in between was not needed.
Very interesting, thanks guys. Did the line passing through tennyson ever deliver coal to the old power station? I remember exploring it in the early 2000s before it was demolished.
Reopening and rebuilding or upgrading the Tennyson station at the tennis centre would make sense, especially during the tennis in January. Every January, It is confusing for people trying to get to the tennis centre via the city to Corinda and then transferring to buses from Corinda train station to the tennis centre in Tennyson (versus vice). Bloody nightmare for locals trying to get around Graceville, Corinda, and Oxley area while the tennis is on.
Been such a long time since I used a trail regularly I was surprised that Tennyson was closed now…. Very interesting video but some of the pronunciation of suburbs and business names made me laugh. Mind you, not as much as the Michael Berkman skit 😂
Amazing video! However one thing you didn’t mention is that there is part of Mayne still left! As you go underneath the main road, look towards the yard before leaving whilst heading north and you can see a small platform just underneath. From what I presume this is either that of Mayne or an old Bowen Hills Platform, also the older Doomben station is still seen!
That bit that looked like a small platform is part of an old signalling shed and not Mayne station which is 20 metres north of the bit you're talking about. I also thought that it was part of Mayne station, but if you look at old aerial imagery you can see that the station and the signalling shed are different structures.
I work near the Nyanda station, every time I drive past it I keep thinking it was a train platform for the old workshops or something from the early 1900’s but I had no idea it was an actual passenger station.
I can still remember that crossing from when I was about 7 years old. I was with my dad and someone stopped at the crossing for no reason and dad had to take evasive action. That was trippy. The memory I mean, when I saw the early photo from the 70s.

My new favourite channel's second video and it's a good one again, you're 10 out of 10 so far. Nice work all :)

You guys are awesome. Love the re-enactment of the greens mp.
Brilliant video gents
re-enactment? I thought it was found footage 😁🤣
I absolutly love that your channel focuses on Queensland Railways, it is great to see educational videos about it, am definitely subscribing for more.

Cheers mateFerny Grove station just down the road from me looked so much different in 1980
Was worried the first video was a one off. My relief to see a second is immense. Earned yourself a sub
Love the video mate. The style of production reminds me of Jay Foreman’s videos haha
It's official I am the Jay Foreman of Brisbane. Watch out for "Brisbane's Unfinished Motorways" video lol.
I really enjoyed your video, thank you for the insights.

This is a fantastic video. Hello from bundy
just found this channel already love it i'd love to see a video on old raillines that now are only used for freight

Yep I've seen a loco on it before it's used by Qube
Randomly stumbled apon this and loved it hope for more in the future as I'd love to learn more about this stuff
Great video, love it
Glad you enjoyed it!
very good and a excellent production , my husbands Great Uncle GC Willcocks and Grand Father R Willcocks were the builders of the Cleveland line ,
cool vid mate , from an old 90s painter The B Line
Nice one! Just a little correction though, the spur at Nyanda is still in use by standard gauge trip trains accessing the Orrcon steelworks.
Cheers mate
As someone who works as part of the public transport network this history lesson is so valuable! Thanks!

Sorry to be the one, but it's pronounced "Nigh-anda"
I swear he's doing it on purpose. There were others too obvious to be anything but taunts.
There's also no "O" in Salisbury and it's Evans Deakin , not EEEVENS Deakin.
The young man is doing a fantastic job of preserving Brisbane history. So may I politely suggest that you STFU 😅
I just said it but how do you know I said it right

However when Salisbury State High had 1500 students there was an ocean of maroon shirted students heading south on that platform as there were no high schools down that way until you get to Beenleigh although I think Sunnybank High must have been opened by then. The Gloucester St station was also there between Vulture St (now called Southbank) and Park Road. It’s hard to see riding in the train now as it is hidden between two hills unless you remember it as it was but it was pretty cute even in those days.
You certainly nailed the Greens🤣
Nyanda looks so weird, with the overpass pylon right in the middle of the platform
Well done guys!
Used to catch the Corinda train home from school every afternoon. I think it left Central around 3:30 and was half green and half red on the PIDs.
Genuinely peak content.
Congrats on the microphone upgrade, big improvement from the first vid man.
New vid coming ?
Thanks mate, yes I am in the process of finishing another script.
@BrissieTransit 👍
Nice! Don't forget the skits, the one with the 3 pollies and 1 of em hits the bng and last just says no was good. 🤣
i like the dry humour in the writing. nice
good video. So frustrating. I think we need to start digging.
The Nyanda overpass was a level crossing elimination project that failed to eliminate the level crossing. And no mention of old Bowen Hills station? The Up platform and ramp up to Campbell Street are still mostly there.
Fantastic share thank you!.
There used to be a Thorroldtown station between Wooloowin and Eagle Junction. It got closed because those two stations are pretty close together, and another one in between was not needed.
NIce job guys!
The siding at Nyanda is still in use.
Qube Logistics using that siding and PN doing shunts for them depends on the train
Saw a train in the siding a few months ago. The shiny rails indicated that the siding was being used.
Its used by orrcon steel for coil deliveries too.
Very interesting, thanks guys. Did the line passing through tennyson ever deliver coal to the old power station? I remember exploring it in the early 2000s before it was demolished.
The Jay Foreman of Brisbane 🙌
Reopening and rebuilding or upgrading the Tennyson station at the tennis centre would make sense, especially during the tennis in January. Every January, It is confusing for people trying to get to the tennis centre via the city to Corinda and then transferring to buses from Corinda train station to the tennis centre in Tennyson (versus vice). Bloody nightmare for locals trying to get around Graceville, Corinda, and Oxley area while the tennis is on.
there is a way to reopen tenson. Yenropily - Sherwood- Roma street -Ferny
Great video
I remember when the tains were running, I went to school at Tennyson use to get the train from there almost everyday
I was on one of the Tennyson detours; the express service to Gold Coast, was an interesting detour
There an abandoned station in Melbourne called General Motors where the Holden factory was between Dandenong and Hallam
