My RG34XX just arrived today and I love it. I know a lot of people aren't a fan of the D-Pad but I personally have no issue with it. Now I just need to sell my RG40XXV, and Miyoo Mini Plus lol
Love your videos since your beginning Russ, and the more I look at your content towards low spec devices like this one, the more I love what the Miyoo Mini had done when it came out, and how the community around it made it even better. Years later, I still absolutely love this device, and nothing came close that had this perfect bland of usability and portability. Again, amazing work as always!
Good video! I owned the original GBA model way back during the GBA's initial launch and it was pretty good. Though, I overall prefer the SP model, this still looks like a solid option. I remember being blown away when the GBA first came out as it was pretty much a portable SNES. I'm so jaded now that we can play practically anything portable with these handheld devices. I would have loved to have one of these devices as a kid! 😄
Finally, the Contra test on original hardware! Jokes aside, great video Russ. Answers all the questions I had when I saw the original reviews, since most didn't have a GBA to compare and that was the most interesting thing for me. If this came out before the SP, I probably would have preferred this one, but since I already own the SP and the CubeXX, there's no reason to get one.
Man, that form factor is so nostalgic and enticing, and the price point is equally tantalizing. While I owned an original DMG Gameboy and a Sega Game Gear when they were released, I never ended up getting the Advance (though I wanted one). As I sit here and play TMNT (the arcade game) on my PS Vita, I cannot decide. Great coverage and comparison, as always!

I really liked the look of the silver SP when it first came out (didn't buy it though, because 1) I didn't have the pocket money and 2) even if I did, the screen looked horrible even by the standards of the time and was a complete turn-off), which is why I also got the emulation console in that color.
Can't wait to watch this during lunch, have the Anbernic SP and love it, have 2 original GBAs that I've modded but definitely want to get the 34XX at some point too
@@PastaLuke yea...a friend of mine works for portmaster he gets every handheld weeks before release including this one...he sold it to me for very little money.
I was gifted a second-hand Indigo GBA about 20 years ago, and even though it was already beat up and had no backlight, I loved that thing to death; it's still somewhere in my childhood home. I was gonna buy the Indigo RG34XX but had to wait until I got back from my holiday vacation with the family, which came right in time for Anbernic to reveal the Glacier colorway. I ended up getting that one instead since I'm probably gonna end up modding the original in the next few years anyway. Here's to another 2 decades of enjoying GBA games!
Heads up: Just did the contra test with the RG35XX SP: It's perfect. Glad I got that one instead, though I use it mainly for SNES and PS1 emulation, I have a superior GBA SP with an IPS V5 Displaymod(that also has saturation controls, also passes the contra test btw.) for GBA separately. Also the EZ Flash Omega card is perfect for it, even has save states and rumble(there are some games that can be patched with rumble like Wario Land 4)
@@jyllianrainbow7371 Kind of makes sense that there is a bit of variation in terms of quality on a cheap low-end emulation console. We can't realistically expect the same level of consistency as on hardware made by Nintendo. This was mentioned in an earlier video on Anbernic systems, if I'm not mistaken, so it's kind of odd to not see it mentioned here, given how much time he spent on discussing the D-Pad and buttons.
I think the nice thing about being both a gba and original gb owner, is that there are now options of replicating the experience in a premium way without resorting yo modding. It's not that I couldn't trust myself to mod. It's more that these retro devices are getting so old now that I want to _retain_ the warts and all original parts. This was a really Fun Side-by-Side Comparison here. This is one of those Rare Cases that the Knock-Off Product is Better than the Original in Terms of Upgraded Performance, Buttons, & Screen. It’s pretty ironically funny that my Favorite Anbernic Handhelds so far are the Nintendo Knock-Offs such as the RG35XX SP & RG34XX. I wonder if they will do Nintendo DS Next?
i know you probably mean the buttons are better in the sense that there are more of them. but otherwise I understand the buttons (quality) Is worse on the anbernic
@ yeah I was referring to the Additional Buttons on the Ambernic, but since these are Cheap Chinese Knock-Offs you pretty much get the Quality you get for especially the Battery Charging Problems with the RG XX Series. @ well plus it might Cost more Money to Implement a Second Screen. So far I haven’t seen any of these Emulation Handhelds besides the Ayaneo Flip DS which is Really Expensive.
Once again a great comparison video, the 34xx has the spirit of the original GBA for sure. A super cheap choice over a fully kitted out moded GBA,even an non modded GBA. I'm a fan of this device.
I already have a transparent red one, but I like it so much that I want to get a solid color one too. I'm hoping they come out with white, because that is the one I grew up with (and still have actually, even though it is in rough shape).
Hey Russ! When you're doing voice-over, is it at the same time as you're recording footage? Or is it VO first and then "mime" afterwards? It's so slick!
I've used mine for about 3 weeks now and I have to admit that I would gladly have exchanged a tiny bit of original GBA similarities for a standard ABXY buttons layout.
That layout makes no sense. If they had staggered the buttons at the SNES controller angle it would have been perfect. Another reason I'm glad I got the SP instead.
I've been curious about people's thoughts on that. It can be hard for me to adjust to abxy snes layout for gba games. Has the unconventional layout been worth it for a lot of people. Looking at the shell, an abxy layout would have needed much smaller buttons to fit, so that might be why they designed this the way they did while using the form factor of the sp to fit in tbe standard layout
@writeronfire "perfect" is a very relative word in this case, especially since they aim for authenticity. But yeah there are many more handhelds out there with a more traditional layout that we can choose.
I don't mind it at all. To be honest, I wish more handhelds were going for different things. The Arc D/S for example, was unabashadly Sega, down to the button layout. When I play my Nano, I wish it dropped two buttons to make the two remaining face buttons slightly bigger.
The false diagonals arereally annoying so I've been mainly playing mine for turn-based or tactical RPGs where I don't have to make quick precise movements. Hoping a tape mod will fix it. But besides that I'm really liking it. I just hope as the d-pad breaks in the false diagonals don't get worse
FWIW, pressing the buttons quickly gives the least accurate force measurement. It should take several seconds per button press to get a more accurate number.
Hello Retro game corps..Love your channel and intro music by the way..I am 46 and a super fan on the Gba. Bought it when it first came out. I feel I might be able to give you a little insight on a person that had a gba 20 years ago in my younger days.. First off the form factor is better that the original gb especially for a person that has big hands. Also the games are perfect for snes fans at the time. Regarding the 34xx. Great for non joystick analog games. Anything up to psp and Ds 2d side scroll .Mabey some Mario 64 reworking the controller situation that I've seen done before..For me it's perfect 👌. Gonna get the green one and be playing Mario 3, sonic 2 on genesis, Sotn Castlvania on ps1, Tetris 64 on 64, Chrono Trigger on snes, Shante on gbc, gunstar heros on gba and street fighter alpha 3 upper . The 34xx is perfect for 2D goodness but I will say will need some wearing in...thanks for you time...keep doing what your doing..curtiscdragon !
Sorry that we almost let you forget to talk about the shoulder buttons! We will try to do better. Still a really cool device, if the SP likes ever fail to scratch that nostalgia itch, it is good to know that this one is there to pick up. My dream GBA would still have the link port up top for connecting to Gamecube, but I do understand that this is a SUPER NICHE want...I just love me some FF Crystal Chronicles and Four Swords and those with a modern back lit screen would be pretty cool!
It's fantastic. It looks good, feels good and works for GBA perfectly. I'm using MinUI, which is perfect. I wish the RG35XX SP would be like that by not having hinges that always break.
I don't know how it is in person but that GBA screen looks like it actually has more depth than the Anbernic, the title screen of Zooo or whatever it's called almost looks 3D where the Anbernic looks like a flat image on that same title screen.
I'm currently playing on my OG GBA SP, I installed it a IPS screen and bought a cartridge with sd card reader, and it feels awsome. is the first time I truly enjoy GBA games, everything looks right on the screen. I wanted to buy the rg35xx sp but since I already have this GBA SP, I don't feel I need one. the only thing lacking is the fast forward feature, but I'm planning to moddit with an accelerometer.
The most important feature of these both consoles for me is the angle of the Face Buttons. its not a 45 degree for a perfect square like in most modern consoles, instead its much flatter like 20 degrees to each other. This is why i never had fun with Super Mario Advance 4 on any other console than the Original GBA (And it is not only my favourite SM Game, it is on of my all time Favourite games and i put it on any console that can play GBA Games). I Think the Original Facebutton Layout on GB DMG, GBA and SNES is like that for a ergonomic reason, i feel like they forgot about that and now its more an aesthetic thing to place the Facebutton in a perfect square. Because of that the RG34XX is pretty sure the best device for Oldschool Jump n Run games like Super Mario.
Trying to avoid the diamond shape issue on modern controllers, for GB/GBA run and gun games like Megaman and metroidvanias like... Metroid and Castlevania... i'm used to give a f* off and just place the "BA" on " YA" to give the games a more confortable holding on modern controllers, so i can jump and shoot/attack at the same time without moving my finger. ... but yes; i totally agree with you and this classic positioning of the face buttons really should help us all to enjoy better the games as how they got thought to be enjoyed!
Lol Russ, you misspoke and implied that charging the 34xx made it heavier. I have my original GBA SP, and still played my original pokemon emerald on it from time to time. But I got the 35xxSP and after setting it up, there's no contest in how superior the SP is at playing GBA games. Looking forward to your review of the miyoo flip, it genuinely looks like it might be even better.
The patents have long since expired and Nintendo isn't making GBAs anymore. As long as they aren't passing them off as the real deal, they can do this. For the same reason, new shells are legal to produce.
I've gone into quite a rabbit hole when it comes to GBA screens. I agree that the original GBA screen is ancient technology and not a very refined experience... but it's also what Nintendo put out there and it's how people played these things for a long time. Even when the first SP came out, the backlight tech wasn't very good, things looked washed out... And I kind of want to embrace that jank lol. I started using all kinds of shaders to try and emulate that behaviour on my RG405V just to try and get a somewhat "authentic" GBA experience. Do you have any opinions on this? Or even suggestions on shaders and stuff?
Speaking as someone who played his original GBA until it wore out and he had to replace it with a DS Lite, there are two ways to get a truly authentic GBA experience. The first way is to find a shader that makes the screen too dim to see what's going on half the time and too reflective to see what's going on the other half of the time. The second is to find a shader that replicates the effect of a small LED light suspended a few inches above the screen. It'll let you see what's going on . . . unless you hold your device at the wrong angle, in which case the shader will super-impose an image of the light apparatus over the screen.
If you're going to get a GBA with an IPS screen, then the ambernic is a no brainer. Especially with 120hz and BFI support you're gonna get something close to stock feel on an overall superior device. 3x integer scaling is just icing in the cake. Nostalgic, and fresh. I personally can't justify buying it even if I want to. The rp5 is enough 😂
i desperately need anbernic to redo the rg arc but with enough power to push some native res saturn games, its so hard to justify getting one only to play megadrive
Я хотел поиграть на ГБА в серию игр про адвоката Феникса Райта, но это можно было сделать только на японском. Теперь можно поиграть на Анберник через эмулятор DS)
I got one and I love it. Playing gba games like fire emblem, advance wars etc is amazing on this thing. I got a powkiddy v10 for the perfect aspect ratio (and the low price) and i love that thing, but the rg34xx is just perfect for gba. Playing games on this just feels better than other handhelds to me (I have the rg351v, rg300x, powkiddyv10 among others.) Also I have found that while ge aspect ratio isnt perfect, i really like sega genesis games on this as well.
hey RGC have you compared the sp models? if you give the original a ips screen and have a everdrive or EZflash you will have the best you can get from the original. however, with the help of emulation and extra buttons, the anbernic is the better option. i mean just having a fast forward button is all i need.
During the holidays, I found the anbernic 552 for half off, so $110. At that price, do you think the 552 makes a lot more sense, even today? Or does your initial review still hold.
Do these hand helds come with games preinstalled like a cuple of thousands or they are empty ad one has to have the knowlage and be a hacker to find the games get the and install them?
Hi Russ it wasn't clear to me if you're using or recommend enabling color correction in your videos for the RG34XX. I personally like the more vibrant colors, looks like Anbernic doesn't have color correction enabled by default just the lcd3x filter :)
The thing that really stands out with the RG34xx for me, is that when I am playing it, I often forget that I'm even playing an emulator. No other emulation handheld has done that for me.
I get this from the XXSP. It feels so natural, even when playing custom Pokémon games.

I'd imagine extended use would make diagonals easier to hit rather than more difficult to hit. But it's to be seen.
Hopefully Anbernic keeps up the good pace and makes a DS-like device with 2 screens! That would be something.
Wasn't Actuation Force a cartoon that ran Saturday mornings in the mid 80s that ended after one season?
Glad I chose the indigo over the glacier. It's a loy more nostalgic to me even though a lot of my friends had the latter.
Extremely specific complaint about modern controls for old games that I completely agree with.
If only the d-pad wouldn't be Ghost Input Central...
6:50 Charged batteries weigh more? :D
Technically yes, practically it's an immeasurably miniscule difference. But yeah he caught me off guard as well
The same as I tought 🤣🤣🤣
Only the heaphone jack remains old school but in a very good way :)
5:30 what is the capacity of the rechargeable battery? What happens if that battery dies, can we order replacements?
I'm hoping someone comes out with an OLED screen upgrade for the original GBA. I installed one in my GBC and it's fantastic.
I bought their SP clone last year and love it and now I want to buy this too lol.
I'm still leaning toward the RG35XX SP for that clam shell. Still have to budget for one of them.
Man, the d-pad sensitivity in general has just killed my interest in the 34XX altogether.
If I didn't upgrade my original GBA just last year with a new screen, shell, and buttons, I'd probably have gotten the 34xx.
Anyway, it's almost a half of January and no new Anbernic device at the moment!
Hoping for a DS clone next 🤞
@Muench13 yeah, it's hard to image any other form
The color might actually be the same as the original but 20 years of age will definitely fade colors quite a bit.
Would the 34xx benefit from the dpad tape mod like on the RG35XX? That definitely helped with accidental diagonals on that device.
The lack of a backlit screen on the original GBA hardware makes it a non-starter for me.
How is it even legal to replicate the case like that? I mean, I'm not complaining, but still...
The patents have long since expired and Nintendo isn't making GBAs anymore. As long as they aren't passing them off as the real deal, they can do this. For the same reason, new shells are legal to produce.
Finally a shirt I can get with
i wonder if switching out the dpad and membrane would complete that nostalgia feel.
Seems strange we haven't received a video about the Miyoo Flip yet.
We need the miyoo flip review!
Every non-Miyoo Flip video coming out is just teasing me lol
Love the buttons, hate the dpad. Back to my miyoo mini plus.
I already have both devices shown in the video, even in the same color, but I still watched the whole video😂
Hopefully we can get a basic rg40xx DMG next. Not the V with a joystick, I want a true DMG
i desperately need anbernic to redo the rg arc but with enough power to push some native res saturn games, its so hard to justify getting one only to play megadrive
Я хотел поиграть на ГБА в серию игр про адвоката Феникса Райта, но это можно было сделать только на японском. Теперь можно поиграть на Анберник через эмулятор DS)
14:19 Hello 😂
I got one and I love it. Playing gba games like fire emblem, advance wars etc is amazing on this thing. I got a powkiddy v10 for the perfect aspect ratio (and the low price) and i love that thing, but the rg34xx is just perfect for gba. Playing games on this just feels better than other handhelds to me (I have the rg351v, rg300x, powkiddyv10 among others.) Also I have found that while ge aspect ratio isnt perfect, i really like sega genesis games on this as well.
Now they just need to put that same screen into a clamshell body and make a 34XXSP
What if you turn the screen brightness all the way down to check the colors?
hey RGC have you compared the sp models?
if you give the original a ips screen and have a everdrive or EZflash you will have the best you can get from the original. however, with the help of emulation and extra buttons, the anbernic is the better option. i mean just having a fast forward button is all i need.
Perhaps you could try swapping the buttons and membranes? The Anbernic then might feel better.
During the holidays, I found the anbernic 552 for half off, so $110. At that price, do you think the 552 makes a lot more sense, even today? Or does your initial review still hold.
Could you do a more in-depth sutup guide for this when knulli fully comes out?
Do these hand helds come with games preinstalled like a cuple of thousands or they are empty ad one has to have the knowlage and be a hacker to find the games get the and install them?
What watch are you wearing? Looks nice with that strap. Cool anbernic thing too I guess.
When is miyoo mini flip review coming out?
Hi Russ it wasn't clear to me if you're using or recommend enabling color correction in your videos for the RG34XX. I personally like the more vibrant colors, looks like Anbernic doesn't have color correction enabled by default just the lcd3x filter :)
