    Overnight caregiver at a mental health facility is My Town job while I'm getting started with my wife on our Homestead/meat operation starting with chickens and hoping for pigs one day. We are the first ones in our families to farm and run a Homestead Bakery. You guys are a big inspiration to my family and friends.

    Your end comment that being a man is about sacrifice was really helpful. It’s Saturday evening at 9:15 pm. I really want to be done and home. My wife wants me to be home. But I’m still working. Some of my help is sick, some is off for a few days. The work needs to be done, the customers need to be taken care of. I’m the boss, so here I am, sacrificing, working late on Saturday while other guys I know are home. Thanks for the videos.

    Me and the wife have about 40 head of cattle in Alberta we’re slowly growing and in order to support that I started trucking with my own truck hauling hay, helping the other farmers and people who have animals and it’s been crazy I can’t keep up. It’s sure enjoyable to still be in the ag industry while working off the farm. Makes me feel like I haven’t really left it

    Appreciate the video and you are 100% correct. If you are willing to work, show up on time and work when scheduled you won't have trouble finding employment and if you're willing to learn new things and take on additional responsibility you can grow with a farm or any company in general!

    I’ve been an airline pilot since 2000. Still hold an ATP, but I was off for a year on paid leave during COVID, and after returning for 6 months, have gone back on an unpaid leave with my wife as she battled ALS.
    I have a few aviator friends who farm. It’s more common than you think. Not crop dusters, I’m talking airline guys like myself.
    3 of the children are 10 and under. I might not fly commercially ever again with my wife being gone. But flying and farming are a great fit together.
    I had a great career in the military as well. 26 years split between active duty and the reserves. Full pension and benefits once I’m 56 in my case. I earned the right to collect earlier than 60 yrs old.
    The key to success is diversification. Any two of the 3 careers could have gone bad and I’d still do ok. It’s makes the grind a lot easier. Never felt like a wage slave.

    The cat diesel to charge the battery on the Edison truck is a really good idea so it's technically a hybrid I guess but that would take away a lot of my fears about running out of juice in a electric truck. The reason it's less refined is he wanted flat glass that you could buy anywhere rather than curved that you have to go to the dealer for and pay way too much . For the price I bet it's still going to be way more profitable to get an older mack or pete and put some money into it make it nice and you know it will run and run and make you money

    I could speak at length about this labor issue and community dynamics. I am a farm kid that didn't have enough of a family operation to come back to. I could name a few others like me as well. If a person has the drive, ability and desire to farm and ranch, they will want their own farm or business. All we're asking is the same opportunity that the others had, and that's not too much or unreasonable to ask for. There are people out there that want to work, but they don't want to work for no future or poor pay and poor work culture.
    My wife says that instead of saying, I can't find help, they should say, I can't pay help. If you go to look for a farmer to work for that's fine. Just be sure it's a short term plan, you're paid very well, and you're very very clear on your intentions to have your own farm operation. If that prospective employer does not understand that, and is not willing to help you move towards independence then he needs to be honest about it. Usually, they talk sweet you at the beginning and then you show up and put in the effort and they're like oh wow this is nice, a guy who will work and he's capable. Any ideas of helping you fade away as they look to milk you for all they can. You will need clear times of evaluation on the future. Possibly compensation if certain things are not happening. Or, it's time to move on.
    As Tork says, there are opportunities and you've got to be creative and think outside the box. I cheer on all you smaller guys and gals trying to make a go of it. Don't give up. Don't give in.

    There are great Work From Home jobs out there. Farmers are great tinkerers and can easily understand how things work. Troubleshooting computers and networking pays well and is highly needed. If you can setup a camera to watch your calves and connect it back to your house via wifi, you have the skills to get started in I.T.

    About what town job would work better for a guy farming, I see the trades that have indoor work is something better than a job in construction or trucking because construction outdoors may not give you much time off except for winter and when it is raining. Trucking could be OK depending on the availability of time off.

    The old joke goes. A young man asked good a job with a farmer. Farmer said yes he could use some body. The young man asked what it pays. The farmer said he would pay him what he was worth. The young man said i won't work for that. This is not just farming. It is all over.

    Great job as always guy 👏 as you guys are talking about the shortage of labour, specifically farm labour. What are your thoughts on the H2A visa for foreigners to work on farms in the US? Do you think this is a major factor in taking jobs away from locals or is the bigger issue at hand that mostly people don't want to work.. (work hard) for their pay.😅
    Keep up the good work 🤙

    • @sandsock
      @sandsock 10 месяцев назад

      farm visas only hurt agriculture. the visa program only protects the biggest of the farm corporations. what all farmers need is paid more for out grain or meat. we shouldnt be allowing corporate farms to hire illegals , to lower their cost of productions. being hard on the illegal labor raises all boats. it keeps mega dairies from dumping milk below the cost of production. it keeps them on equal playing ground as the the 2 person dairy

    'labor is the #1 problem' . . . 'predominately hired through facebook' . . . 'we can't afford to hire right now'
    - Fellas, listen to yourselves. labor is not the problem. mgmt/hiring is the problem. you dont have (confidence in) margin or hiring skills (let alone training). There's lots of hungry talent out there, but they arent (and shouldnt be) on facebook.

    • @kenraterink
      @kenraterink 5 месяцев назад +1

      Hiring is not the problem. It's finding anyone who wants to work is, and finding someone with enough common sense to learn anything and do it on thier own without having to babysit them is a huge problem.

    The idea of their truck isn't the first. That truck isn't considered "green" in the US, so Amercian companies didn't go that route. An example is a locomotive. A truck or car built that way isn't considered green by the Feds.
    Butt was the name of the size of barrels they went in.

I am wanting to start this farm a couple years after high school, I’m a freshman currently. I have a decent paying job don’t work many hours but will work more as I get older. The JD is likely the better to keep , not that it's a better machine , just that parts for Deere are always easier to get.
      One of the biggest problems you will find is getting the rest of machinery. Cultivators , seeding equipment, harvesting equipment etc of the size you need has not been built for fifty years
      You should maybe look at direct to consumer sales . Veggies , chicken, pork
      If you can get around all the inspectors, regulations and restrictions for organic , people will pay . Just have to get past all the non farmers trying to get a share of the pie

    The cost of the farmers living keeps increasing same as every body’s so everyone that is buying from us tries to hold the price down so after so many go bankrupt there’s a shortage so the middle man gets pushed out and buys get closer to the farmers to guarantee Supplies then someone has a great idea the farmer should get bigger Guarantee Supplies and the Farmers cost is Raising to right so it just makes sense right? But if the farmer count how many pigs or grain he needed to produce to get the same wages, truck driver It’s not worth the headaches

    To the point on Labor, the boomers are retiring and they made up about 20% of the population and the GenZ which is coming into the workforce to replace them is only about 7% of the population
    So labor is likely to continue to be the biggest factor going forward for at least a decade

Love your guys' stuff.

Tons were then and learned to play the system... get job for minimum amount of time then get fired so they can draw unemployment, then do it all over again... there should be no unemployment, zero.. you only need to show you've looked for a job to stay on it. Get an interview, then no show and it counts ... had several people tell me this. They did it while laid off in winter months for seasonal job. It's what they were told to do by unemployment agency because they weren't actually looking for new job, just wanted unemployment benefits for 2 or 3 months until weather changed to start working again
