One of the things I noticed about Bonham when I was an early teenager just learning to play drums, was that his hi-hat is `almost` always going, keeping the count, while the rest of him goes off on some brilliant groove. He and Keith Moon are what made me decide to play drums in the first place. Brilliant musicians.
My grandfather was a drummer in the 1920s and I do wonder what he would have made of Bonham. It's a completely different era. I am glad you got to react to this, as a professional, because it is too easy for those outside of the expertise to draw conclusions without knowledge.
A few things that always stood out to me about Bonzo: he plays traditional style, his left hand is holding the stick at almost the halfway point; he holds it really high, but still manages to get the power when he needs it. The other thing I noticed is how spaced apart he sets his hi-hat cymbals; that’s easily a 2”stroke with just the foot. Crazy. Mr. Bonham, you broke the mold.
imo, Led Zeppelin had the 4 most talented musicians ever combined and the chemistry was unmatched. I also feel Queen was the same combination of magic.
When he has the hi hat going, and rolling on the snare and just playing off of everything, is called "The Bonham Engine.! He is one of the original drummers to really make that a part of his drum solo without having continuous patterns. He is in perfect timing playing all the rudiments with the other 3 limbs!!!! Amazing!!!!!
Almost. The Bonham engine isn't the hi hat going. The rhythm people refer to as the Bonham engine is the dynamic between his legs, hi hat and kick drum. Hi hats on the on beat, kick drum on the off beat. Chx-mm-chx-mm-chx-mm... Chuga chuga chuga chuga
Hey Stephen, I remember the day John Bonham died. My 16 year old self, and two of my nephews, one was 16 also, and the other was 13; we were driving to a local library in the L.A. area after school to check out some books for school. Our radio was broken in the car, and on the way to the library, my 13 year nephew in the back seat said that he had heard at his school that Bonham had died. In 1980, Zeppelin were gods to me. Basically me and my other nephew told him he was full of shit, because we hadn't heard anything at our school. We couldn't turn on the radio, because it was broken. We went to the library, got our books....I was dropped off at my house...I went to turn on the radio to KLOS in my bedroom, and 'Stairway to Heaven' was playing on the radio. At that point, I knew that my younger nephew wasn't full of shit, but had told the truth. My heart sunk. Legendary DJ Jim Ladd came on after the song, and I can tell he was very somber while talking about Bonham. The god of rock drumming was dead. I couldn't believe it. All the rock stations in the LA area were honoring Bonham the rest of the day by playing Zeppelin tunes, and talking about Bonham. I had seen Zeppelin three years earlier in June of 77, at the LA Forum, with my older sister and her friends. I had just discovered Zeppelin a paltry 6 months earlier in Dec. of 76 when I heard Kashmir for the first time. At the 77 show, I remember when the music and lights came on it was devistatingly loud, and you could physically feel the wind from Bonham's drums. Bonham was thunder and lightning. In my opinion he was the best of all time. Thanks for the reaction and critique of Bonham of this legendary performance. Rock on!🤘
You story sounds a lot like when I heard that John Lennon was murdered. I was 20 years old working the night shift and I didn't hear a word about his death until I got to my car and turned the radio on. I think I cried all the way home.
I hope you'll forgive me for commenting a second time on the same video. Another thing sticks out to me as I'm watching this again. As you mentioned, he's so relaxed. He doesn't seem tired either. As a drummer, Steve, you know, the drummer is pretty much on the whole show. This is like not early in the performance. Maybe mid way, and he's just chillin'. So effortless. And he still had the rest of the show to go. It's like Jimmy and John Paul had their own solos at some point in the show, so he gets to take a breather then. But wow. The stamina a drummer has to have. Unbelievable.
You being a drummer, I’ve been waiting for you to see this! Whoohoo! Love it? ☮️❤️😎🎼 In the 70s, every headliner had a drum solo. Nobody did it like Bonzo. I’ve seen it live, watched the video so many times. I can’t play anything lol. But am never bored with this. Please don’t stop saying “let’s go”, you always look so happy when you do! Love you and your channel. Can you imagine being Bonhams neighbor before he made it big??
Have you heard Randy Castillo on drums? He played for Ozzy, Motley Crue and others. He's from Albuquerque, New Mexico, and I knew him when he was with a local band that played lots of Led Zeppelin. Great drummer and a sweet soul, gone too soon. RIP Randy.
Appreciate the explanations you give Steven, especially this one. Even though I’m not a drummer, I’ve always loved this song. It has such great dynamics!
Some fun facts: Bonzo played on pots & pans as a kid, according to his sister, he only had a few lessons. He didn’t learn how to read music, his mother wanted him to continue lessons & learn to read the music. He didn’t have a semi decent drum kit, until he was 15. He was kicked out of a couple bands because he played to loud lol, him & Plant played in at least 2 bands together & were friends since about age 14. Imagine how happy he was getting his first Ludwig kit, as a member of a band that appreciated his drumming. At first he had two bass drums, but of course the band told him he didn’t need both. Accordingly to JPJ, they were setting up for a concert & Bonham always checked his kit sound. Here Bonzo was in the stands listening, JPJ thought it was Bonzo playing, & it was Jason playing. Jason was about 12 when John passed away, John worked with Jason on playing & was so proud of him & showing him off to friends. Another fun fact, Robert Plant is Jason’s godfather, that’s how close Plant & Bonham were. I’m not a drummer, but my opinion John Henry (Bonzo) Bonham is the greatest drummer, & in the greatest band. I still miss him so much, the self taught greatest drummer, who played with his heart & soul. It’s no wonder the band couldn’t go on without him. Thank you for your reaction, I knew you’d love it.
When you try to describe all the various techniques that make great drummers - he ticks all the boxes . When this video was made some of these techniques haven't even been named yet ! Hard to believe that so many of these great drum performances from JB were when he was quite inebriated ! (which makes them even more impressive )
The absolute TITAN of Rock and Roll drumming! There is no one better, and in my book no one as good. Some may have the accuracy, some may have more speed, but NOBODY has the feel, groove, dynamics, swing, creativity, and POWER as the late, great JB. AWESOME video, I love your energy and enthusiasm! Just smashed the subscribe button - Rock On!!
Good one bro! That has to be one of my favorite videos of all times! Another of my favorite Zeppelin tunes is "Ten years gone". Thanks for playing my request and take care. Cheers 👍
That's why this is my fav Zep show. The audio and video are top notch. (surprised you didn't mention it) The lights are bright so you can really see everything. I'll keep on recommending, How Many More Times from this show only bc I know you'll love it as much as this, if not more. ✌
A single 26-inch bass, single pedal... could you imagine him using todays technology. Double Bass, Duelist pedals... I would love to see a "Back to the future" moment to see Bonham on a Terry Bozzio kit. 😅
Had Bonzo not died, I wonder what new ideas he would bring to the enjoyment of music lovers. Most definitely one of the best drummers ever and very unique with his approach to what can be done with a musical instrument.
The best to ever do it!!! So awesome how into it you are too…awesome!!! I’m a drummer and seen this many times and could watch it over and over! Favorite band Zep favorite drummer Bonham! Love ur channel too👍🏻💯
Great reaction Steven!! Bongo one of my inspirations that made me pick up the sticks at age 16 I’m 58 now! He’s definitely in the top 3 all time because just what you said this was 1970 and what he was doing was pretty much unheard of and never seen
The main riff to this was one of the first I ever learned on electric guitar. There was a Led Zeppelin special of a Guitar Magazine I used to buy, circa 1993 I guess.
Okay now Steven, you dug up the holy grail of drum solos here. I know there are many greats like Peart of Rush, etc., but Bonzo is my fav out of all of them. I like his heavy sound and syncopations.
He is such an amazing talent that shaped drumming forever! The things he could do with one kick pedal and his feel with triplets is unmatched! Truly one of, if not, the best to ever do it!! 🔥🔥
Did you notice right at 6:45 he’s doing double paradiddles between the bass drum and the snare!?! Crazy innovative. I like your content. Keep up the good work
Have you ever hit a brass cymbal with your hand, much less a gong? IT REALLY F-ING HURTS! And then to carry on with the song without missing a beat. My hero.
Good reaction, This is the best Moby Dick Recording...Bonzo is so young here ( he's only 22)...I started play drums 4 years after this was recorded...Of course Bonzo is a big inspiration...Lord knows we had SO MANY drum influencers in the 70's...Carl Palmer was my muse though.
Great review! I am a lifelong Led Zeppelin fan, I bought the Blu-ray that this was from, “how the west was won”, when it first came out. I have always held this particular recording as my favourite of all the live versions of Moby Dick, in part due to how well they cleaned up the audio and video from the original source material. I’ve seen quite a few reviews of this video, and I really enjoyed your insightful notes about it more than most of the other reviews. Thank you for doing this one!
Massive Zeppelin fan who has seen this multiple times but the reaction was enhanced with your input. Love your analysis. I've just started trying to learn the harmonica by ear, so i'm appreciating the practice and work these musicians do. Rhythm is something that i'm starting to need to pick up so i can play better...and i love hearing drummers explain their craft. Thanks for the reaction. Check out Ramble On, or Fool in the rain
Let's Gooo! I know you're going to love this. Dazed and Confused live msg 1973 has to be next. Trooper Here for a good time and 😂Great reaction and Peace out Steven ☮️ ✌️ 🙏 BTW i love how Bonzo keeps time with his mouth its interesting 😀 in the MSG version of this they literally show John's story while he's playing so yes he's absolutely telling a story 😀 I always wondered if the Muppet animal was made from Bonzo's or Keith Moon's character 😀 BTW I'm here if you want to check out the MSG on too 😀 He's an absolute beast 😊
Classic performance from one of the greatest. You need to also check out TNUC by Grand Funk Railroad. Donnie Brewer was another beast. Same time period.
I point that out watching Bonham solo videos, as well…..the fact that he only played a single bass and didn’t use a double kick pedal….his right foot was just that fast!!
That moment when you think you can play drums and Bonham says, "Hold my Monster energy drink." Am I right? 🤣 But seriously, I've long said there were two kinds of musicians. One kind has had all the lessons, years of practice and can do anything you ask of them as long as it's within those lines. The second kind may know all the first one does and definitely has practiced, but they feel the music. It's instinct. No one has to say now on this part I need you to do this. They just do it. They know somehow within themselves what to do. Both are great at what they do. But there's something special about that second one. I dare say there are more greats who are the second, than the first.
What other band has highlighted a drum instrumental, like Zeppelin has done? In itself, that aspect is mind blowing...and then there is the performance...holy fucking shit...is Bonham a God?
Cool thing.. Moe Tucker from the Velvet Underground had her bass drum turned up to use it with her sticks and was a standup drummer. Ringo Starr is the most non lead drummer but perfectly there. Meg White from the White Stripes is perhaps my favorite and another natural non solo drummer. It is sad her stage fright got to her. I was only kind of at one Led Zeppelin concert from the outside because I lived right by the stadium. I went and hung out as the rain started and the promoters thought it wise to lock in 70,000 people or whatever as the show was cancelled. Three songs in to the "rain or shine" show they shut it down. It was a very long time before they had another there, The Eagles were the next group to play there.
I love this! Had to buy The DVD when it came out in the early 2000s and I just love the sound Jimmy Page and the producers managed to get out those old tapes. Bonham is obviously great, but the thing I always laughed at watching these is that you can actually see some of the hardware and wingnuts move while he's playing. Those old cymbal stands and pedals were pretty horrible compared to the High Tech stuff we have available now.
You have just witnessed the reason Led Zeppelin could NOT go on after John Bonham passed away. there's no way to replace someone like him. His son Jason is a damn good drummer as well and has filled in with Zeppelin here and there, but there is only ONE John Bonham.

I am glad you like Zepplin as much as I do!!
Absolutely amazing! 💯
This is why Robert Plant has said after his death, there is NO Led Zeppelin without John Bonham.
My personal opinion, he was and still is the GOAT. Great video and reaction. 💯🤘 from Belgium 🇧🇪
In my opinion, he's the G.O.A.T. The reason why i got into playing the drums.
... and he is a self-taught drummer. I heard him for the first time in 1982, he inspired me to become a drummer too. Best drummer ever.
That’s awesome! Keep rocking! 🥁

Nice breakdown, much more informative than most reactors including other drummers.
Really appreciate that! 🥁
Listen to Fool In The Rain, totally amazing. Never 2 songs were the same. Led Zep are the GOATS
He's the only drummer I have seen that does a call and response between his snare and kick drums 🤯😂
Bonham was the absolute virtuoso on drums...the greatest ever! And in live performances he SANG HARMONY!!!
A few things that always stood out to me about Bonzo: he plays traditional style, his left hand is holding the stick at almost the halfway point; he holds it really high, but still manages to get the power when he needs it.
Next - Going to California -live. This is when Bonzo gets to rest.
🔥
“Bonzo” is the greatest Rock n’ roll drummer. Neil Peart is the greatest technical drummer- percussionist,In my humble opinion. 🤘✌️🤘🔥
Bonzo = GOAT
Check out Buddy Rich if you really want to see some stick work you will be amazed
You have just witnessed the reason Led Zeppelin could NOT go on after John Bonham passed away. there's no way to replace someone like him. His son Jason is a damn good drummer as well and has filled in with Zeppelin here and there, but there is only ONE John Bonham.
He’s truly a LEGEND and one of a kind!
