"A fifty year-old who is the same man he was when he was twenty has wasted thirty years." Fortunately, you can change your mind. While the people who call themselves friends but hammer you down changing your mind are secretly afraid that--if you grow--they won't be able to manipulate you anymore. But the beauty of outgrowing those people and becoming your truer, fuller self, is that those people will fall away and make room for fuller, truer friends... ... who will support you in your growth, and--maybe--you, in theirs. Some people figure it out when they're 80, and almost dead, but I have a feeling you're still young and have time to both grow up and develop your leadership. The drive for status is normal and healthy. One way to have status is to demonstrate discernment and outshine others by throwing shade, toward appearing better by contrast. That can low-key frighten people. Consider this: People act out of love or fear. That's it. That's all it boils down to. What is your behaviour eliciting in others? You have control over your behaviour (including your habits and 'tics', over time) and--to a real extent--others' behaviours toward you, and by extension, your experience of the world. The problem with causing fear--let's call it jealousy, as an example--is that it triggers a cycle: Jealousy; Resentment; Retaliation. Retaliation is the pits and shows up anywhere along a continuum. Another way is to allow the mistakes of others, trusting that they'll learn the lessons, in good time; the advantage being that the risk of developing an enemy and attracting retaliation is low. That said, highlighting solutions--even unsolicited advice--might find you building trust in others, while at once being equals and also being elevated by others for your utility within the group, including--simply--goodwill. That's a paradox, sure, but it's healthier and more sustainable than other alternatives. Consider two relatively high-status moments in life: Someone is responsible for a dozen people, in whatever capacity. They brow-beat, talk smack, gossip, and dismantle others, and otherwise self-aggrandize actively or passively. Talent generally quiet-quits or outright leaves those dynamics for greener pastures, leaving gaps in the organization. Where someone neglects to train their replacements, neither they nor others can advance. Or, again, the gaps flush cash and talent down the drain, and the company can't sustainably scale up to meet either demand or its potential. This scales and cycles like a fractal in many aspects of life. Another scenario is this, by intro: CFO: "What if we train people and they leave?" CEO: "What if we don't train them and they stay?" The person who is responsible for fifty five hundred or five thousand people--in time--has to train a ton of people and help them meet their goals... so he can meet his goals. And it starts small, and scales. Sometimes quickly; Sometimes in spurts; Sometimes lagging. Point is: To have let's call it serious status--and it doesn't have to feel arrogant or lording over others: A lot of truly successful, mature, responsible people listen and relate like normal human beings--it's about taking ultimate responsibility and--fundamentally--helping all of the ships rise. Discernment is part of it, but from a problem-solving, collaborative, mutual-respect perspective. "Respect is not changing the other person." "It's not only about having the right partner, it's about being the right partner." "I'll take care of me for you, if you'll take care of you for me." "Alpha minus the abuse."
