I honestly don't understand how people say this performance isn't one of if not the best of this song. Personally this is my favorite performance for Fade to Black because you can feel a lot more emotion in James' voice from 4:15-5:30 especially that "goodbyeeeee" at 5:15 is just so good. With James on top of Kirk and Lars killing it this just takes the cake. I don't know what else to say I just know this is a performance you can feel through the video.

@@Ranganation As nice as a guy Hammett is, any performance with Hammett is not going to be the best. He sounds terrible in this recording as well. It is so awkward to hear Hetfield knock it out of the park, Lars being decent, even the bass is super tight with everything. And then Hamett's awkward and out of tune solo's hover on top. Does Metallica have a recording of this song where someone else plays the lead parts?

This song got me through one of my darkest depressions. Boyfriend broke up with me. I was pregnant, in the USN, and stationed in Spain. Lost the baby. I was already depressed ( had depression since a teen, still have it, will always have it). Once I lost the baby, I spiraled out of control. Was a size 3, I had to wear sweatpants under my uniform so they’d fit. Tried to take my life. Didn’t take enough pills, woke up the next morning. From there I kinda put myself back together. The part of the song “miss one inside me”. To me that was my baby. To those who read this. Thank You. Never been able to tell the whole story to anyone. Thanks. 💫❤️💫❤️💫❤️💫. 🙏💞🙏💞🙏💞

Sorry for your loss. I lost my dad, my aunt, my granny the past years. Just my mom and brother left. My neighbor passed away just 2 weeks ago. I used to talk to him quite often when I saw him outside. He was a sweet kind guy and I connected very well with him. I could start to chat with him and before I knew it an hour had passed. Both bikers so lots to talk about.
Hardly anyone knew he had terminal cancer. He didn't want to burden anyone with this. My friend who lived right next to him called me up and told me he passed away half an hour later. What happened? She knew about his plan to end his life with help from doctors. The date and time he picked himself and he wanted to do this alone. Rip John.

It's so weird listening to this now in 2019. I've had depression for 20 years since the start of high school to the point where this was like my anthem. It's been one of my (if not the one) favorite songs ever. I dunno if it helped or just made me wallow in the depression worse, but I listened to the crap out of it and related so much and had so many feelings associated with it.
And now listening to it, after FINALLY getting help and seeing a psychiatrist and treating my mental illnesses, it's weird to hear it again. I still absolutely love the song, but it doesn't resonate in the same way, where I had all the feelings of emptiness, sadness, loneliness, feeling pathetic, and not wanting to exist. Instead, due to the treatment, I no longer hate myself, wish I died, etc, so it doesn't hit me in the same way it used to.
I'm not entirely sure if I'm now just seeing it as an amazing song that once meant the world to me, or if I'm seeing it with gratitude that I made it through to the other side, even if it took 20 years and some help from this song for a broken-brained high school kid who felt things would never be anything but terrible.
Also, yeah, like many others, shocked by how great they still sound, especially when performing this song.

Kowxley I’m addicted to watching Metallica lives and I’ve watched a shit ton of full performances through the years. Kirk gets shit on by mustaine fans and that’s mainly it. I’ll pay some songs out for you so that you understand it’s not fuck ups
Blackened- Shortened solo. The mid section is different
One- the second solo to one he doesn’t tap
Fade to black- he improvises the last solo
The shortest straw- does extra harmonics
That’s mainly it. Sometimes I’ll hear something in his solos and ask myself if that was a fuck up. I’d then just go to other lives and compare and most of the time I find out it’s not.
Also sure Kirk has had some negative highlights in his performances. Most of them being some of the easiest parts which makes it look worse. This happens mainly because he’ll just forget whatever he’s supposed to play because it’s so easy so he just doesn’t practice it. He’s changed that in the past 2-3 years.
Plenty guitarists have fuck ups during performances, kirk gets extra hate for it which is pretty stupid.

@@GazanfervonderBarut no not offended at all. I’m actually glad you asked. It will be hard to explain so please forgive if I don’t make a lot of sense. When I placed my faith in Christ (literally trust) I had a change of heart and mind. I use to listen to a lot of thrash/heavy metal. A lot of anger in the music like pantera. I started feeling convicted like never before as to what I put in my mind. I still listen to some of metallicas music now and then because I like the music. The lyrics sometimes are very anti God like the God who failed implying Christ failed by being crucified. Certain songs I can’t listen to anymore because of the meaning behind them. But songs like one that try to shine light on ptsd can actually have a positive message even though it seems dark.
It’s true what the scripture says. When you repent (literally change of mind) you become a new person. That’s the part I can’t explain other than the Holy Spirit coming to make his home in my life. It’s not just music. It’s movies as well. As a born again Christian God placed his peace and joy in my life. It definitely changes you from the inside out. That’s what the gospel does. God saves sinners to which I am.
