Industrial imo is by far the most impressive subgenre. Albums like Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral (or any of them really), Ministry - The Land Of Rape And Honey, Static-X - Wisconsin Death Trip are all far more cinematic than frontrunners of other subgenres. Slightly off topic but one thing I find interesting about some music scenes is that the ppl really invested in it have completely different "norms." Like one album can be hated by a majority of metalheads for something non-metalheads wouldn't even notice - often barely tied to the actual music.
Sunbather by Deafheaven is a quintessential example of this. I’ve heard non-metalheads love it, but it just sounds terrible to me and a lot of other metalheads for various reasons. Biggest I can name off the top of my head are the massive amounts of filler, horrendous guitar tone, vocals way too quiet in the mix, very dull production overall, lack of any strong or memorable riffs, and hamfisted fake-feeling emotional elements (like the piano in the last track lol). I think a lot of those are just symptoms of how the shoegaze aspects were included, but then again I’ve heard blackgaze albums that didn’t bore me to death before so it may be more than just that.
@@uranium54321 I once listened to a relatively obscure (at least to people who aren't huge fans of black metal) album that was widely seen as one of the worst black metal albums ever - one that was lowkey disrespectful of black metal culture as a whole. As a Dream Theater fan, I can admit that The Astonishing and WDADU (When Dream And Day Unite) are not good albums. While WDADU has the benefit of being old enough to have probably been somewhat enjoyable in the 80s for Prog fans, The Astonishing was.. well... astonishingly bad from day 1. The band has a lot of nice stuff to offer, although they rarely escape the legitimate criticisms of track bloat, including overly long intros and meandering outros that just pad runtime across what I consider to be their best work. seeing the really niche and heavier/brutal genres i see as normal is kinda funny. like waking the cadaver is like a sunday drive to me basically lol. also im a HUGE dream theater fan and yeah the astonishing fuckin sucks. their albums from the 2010s are very weak.
It seems like without Portnoy, they just kind of stopped trying new things and stayed in their comfort zone. It's progressive metal without any progression.
I really do hate that the memey bullshit "hurr durr funny" and "wah slow melody" is all that represents PM in the eyes of music critics. So much of it is genuinely fantastic but this video doesn't help it's case 😭
If you care, I'd say some of my favorites are Keepers 2 by Helloween, Destiny by Stratovarius, and Somewhere out in space by Gamma Ray. For USPM I'd throw out Crystal Logic by Manilla Road, In the Hall of the Mountain King by Savatage and Traveler by Slough Feg.
Kinda surprised to see any Strato on the worst list given their massive level of influence, but I guess there's not much else to choose in the 80s. Other super essential albums (besides Keepers 2), Somewhere Far Beyond by Blind Guardian, Symphony of Enchanted lands by Rhapsody and Rebirth by Angra
It's insultingly bad. The first half would be mid but adequate, if the songs were about half their lengths. The second half is Onision-tier zero effort hold music garbage. I honestly don't get why fans of black metal, by and large an awesome, inventive genre, fixate on this one bellend- Weakling exist for heavens sake.
No idea why I struggled so hard to find the appeal in this stuff as a kid. Internally I'd be thinking "Yeah this is great" but deeper down I'd be like "wtf..."
I'm honestly disappointed I didn't get to show brad the magic of Vorak's "Triumph of the Will" for the first time, it's legit one of the funniest things I've ever heard EDIT: 9:02 -- as someone who's listened to over 600 metal albums released in 2024 so far, believe me when I say there IS a ton of bad doom metal. It's just SO bad that it doesn't get enough ratings to show up on the "worst of all time" list on RYM. Also it's mostly not funny-bad, it's just extremely boring.
Reaction to the reaction as a metal fan for 10+ years, especially black metal Czarci Świt is basically the 'so bad it's good' of black metal albums. Gets me cackling everytime Neckbeard Deathcamp is a one man parody project formed by a leftist dude to imitate and make fun of bad NSBM projects. So the album is bad on purpose- not really an excuse tho lol The behemoth placement is rather odd- but as the last two albums has been so aggresively mid and since they are defintely one of the biggest metal acts in the world I understand Negura Bunget are a bastion in incorporating folk elements( actual folk instruments, not just keyboard) into cold hard-hitting black metal and imo have a flawless discography. Lowkey grinds my gears that it's on a list like this lol That Burzum album is actually a compliation released of re-recordings of his earlier stuff,- I guess the low score is because re-recordings mostly are inferior to the originals. Trha's albums are actually amazingly beautiful, I don't know why this split sounds like this That Bethlehem album is another bland re-recording . The band's earlier work could be categorized as such, but then they went into a wierd experimental tangent which is hit or miss. Their earlier albums are definitely the most pulverizing and cathartic examples of depressive/doomy black metal- listen to Dictius Te Necare.( Also, the guy who did vocals for this album is one of the most cringe tryhard edgelords in black metal, and that's saying something) P.S this comment was written before Brad was laughing hysterically at Dictus Te Necare on the 'highest rated metal album' snippet. Not cool Brad, not cool >:( Sorry is a great DSBM band. I like Sorry Wtf that Sepultura split is awesome! One of the best examples of proto-black metal Six Feet Under wohooo! Let's go BREE BREE BREE Illud Divinum Insanus is one of the more popular bad metal albums, maybe even the most popular. All that being said it's slightly grown on me I understand the Aborted hate today since they sold out but The Purity of Perversion is a great album, a death metal classic Torsofuck is just mindless fun stuff, so is Hatebeak That Tougher than nails album has some insane lore behind it, I'd suggest do some research on that and read some interviews Even Candlemass' worst album sounds so good is a testament to their legendary status Folk metal is not one of my favourite genres either, but it's a lot of fun especially live The Gathering has probably the best female clean metal vocalist ever, and this song doesn't do that justice Cradle of Filth has some absolute classics but the mid outweights the bangers unfortunately NSD could be considered the worst of the Ozzy era, but Black Sabbath has wayy worse. Listen to Born Again and tell me if that isn't much much worse Jag Panzer are classic, they have a lot of memorable stuff WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT that Discharge album. Thanks for not talking about it Brad :) In a wierd way over the years I've grown a form of affection towards Lulu, in a novelty kind of way wtf who put Parkway Drive in the same collection of old school metal acts? Anthrax is one of the big 4 of thrash and you put it under speed metal? ( Also Brad not all thrash metal is Slayer -_- ) Venom Inc is a band with only one of the core Venom members and the same lineup as 1991 Venom. So they are essentially wish Venom lol Toxic sounds more power metal than speed metal Don't understand why OP wants to distinguish power metal ( I guess he is talking about European power metal here) and US power metal. Def on average the former is faster than the latter, but the lines are very very blurred- so much so that this partition doesn't make sense Iced Earth- Jan 6th core metal Why is Kamelot in both categories lol( Btw Brad there is some really good power metal out there, listen to Blind Guardian or Helloween) Hammerfall is great Queensryche's first two albums are considered prog metal essentials but I agree this album is ass Probot is a metal project of Dave Grohl. That album has some bangers Ok that's alll I gotta say. Peace out
also the trha is unfortunate since trha is like the best black metal band imo thats still making black metal today, and the person behind it is really cool, its just that its a split and the other side didnt do very well

I don't take anyone's opinion seriously if they say they hate power metal 😅 Ensiferum Two Paths and Manowar Lord of Steel might be a step down in quality compared to those 2 bands other albums but they are nowhere close to being worst in their subgenres. I think the low scores are just from angry fans who will rate an album that's objectively a 6 out of 10 as a 2 because it didn't quite meet their expectations.
You lost a long time fan today homie. Apologizing for hanging with Ethan and Hila without even trying to defend it is pathetic. Just stay in your room if you have no spine.
Venom is like bog standard metal. The fact it showed up multiple times in speed metal means either that's a great genre, or such a niche genre that it crosses over with a bunch of other genres and venom was the only one that fit whatever the speed genre is supposed to be.
Kamelot is actually one of my favorite bands, but their first three albums were basically glorified demos, and they didn't get good until they got an actual professional producer in 1999.

most of Bethlehem's music is excellent. that album is a terrible "remake" of their classic, Sardonischer Untergang im Zeichen irreligiöser Darbietung (SUiZiD). Morbid Angel is also mostly excellent. i have no idea what they were thinking on Illud Divinum Insanus. Venom's first few albums are pretty good, a big early influence on Black Metal, alongside Bathory. Dream Theater does indeed suck balls. so much talent wasted on such bad music. Probot is an interesting project, it's Dave Grohl on most instruments, working with his Metal heroes like Lemmy and King Diamond. not a masterpiece, but some solid tracks. A Blaze In The Northern Sky, and Darkthrone in general, are well worth checking out. classic Black Metal.
SUiZiD is such a mindblowing fricked-up little industrial dungeon. Others don't seem to agree, but it's on the same level of Dictius Te Necare for me. I rarely hear music this simultaneously unsettling and riotously fun.
This video gives me the same feeling as when a Brit shits on the US. Like does the US suck? Sure, but I don't want to hear it from a brit. Does Waking the Cadaver suck? Sure, but I don't want to hear it from someone who has never heard of brutal death metal.

seeing the really niche and heavier/brutal genres i see as normal is kinda funny. like waking the cadaver is like a sunday drive to me basically lol. also im a HUGE dream theater fan and yeah the astonishing fuckin sucks. their albums from the 2010s are very weak.
It seems like without Portnoy, they just kind of stopped trying new things and stayed in their comfort zone. It's progressive metal without any progression.
@whym6438 exactly! I'm so glad he's back and I'm pumped as hell for the new record.
Right I feel like an alien watching Brad react so harshly to music I find normal
Never Say Die isn't bad, it's just post prime Black Sabbath and pre Dio Sabbath.
It's great if you compare it to Born Again
@@drumdreamer92 no, born again blows nsd out of the water
@@TheCozierPowellBorn Again has good songs, but the production is almost unlistenable
Genre: Emperor Palpatine choking to death on an exceptionally large Cheeto
This video is literally about the lowest rated albums, what did you expect?
0:43 bro who let strong bad on the mic 😭😭😭
DECAY, DERANGED, DECREPIT, DELOUSED
@@mememachine-386jugga jigga wugga
The Burzum disrespect is crazy,., you can hate the guy, but hating on filosofem? Its top 3 black metal records ever!
This album is pure garbage to me.
"Highest rated viking metal" is an oxymoron
Joining the stream when Rings of Saturn played was something else. What the hell was that?
Torsofuck and Waking the Cadaver are great man!
3:10 that's just Liturgy
No idea why I struggled so hard to find the appeal in this stuff as a kid. Internally I'd be thinking "Yeah this is great" but deeper down I'd be like "wtf..."
I NEED a brad taste reaction to the entirety of Blaze in the Northern Sky now
I'm honestly disappointed I didn't get to show brad the magic of Vorak's "Triumph of the Will" for the first time, it's legit one of the funniest things I've ever heard
EDIT: 9:02 -- as someone who's listened to over 600 metal albums released in 2024 so far, believe me when I say there IS a ton of bad doom metal. It's just SO bad that it doesn't get enough ratings to show up on the "worst of all time" list on RYM. Also it's mostly not funny-bad, it's just extremely boring.
Half of these sound like something you would hear playing on a TV or Radio in Smiling Friends
Certified Brad Classic
I'm so disappointed that we didn't get to hear the lowest rated nu metal albums of all time
1:26 triumph of the will of the people
Reaction to the reaction as a metal fan for 10+ years, especially black metal
Czarci Świt is basically the 'so bad it's good' of black metal albums. Gets me cackling everytime
Neckbeard Deathcamp is a one man parody project formed by a leftist dude to imitate and make fun of bad NSBM projects. So the album is bad on purpose- not really an excuse tho lol
The behemoth placement is rather odd- but as the last two albums has been so aggresively mid and since they are defintely one of the biggest metal acts in the world I understand
Negura Bunget are a bastion in incorporating folk elements( actual folk instruments, not just keyboard) into cold hard-hitting black metal and imo have a flawless discography. Lowkey grinds my gears that it's on a list like this lol
That Burzum album is actually a compliation released of re-recordings of his earlier stuff,- I guess the low score is because re-recordings mostly are inferior to the originals.
Trha's albums are actually amazingly beautiful, I don't know why this split sounds like this
That Bethlehem album is another bland re-recording . The band's earlier work could be categorized as such, but then they went into a wierd experimental tangent which is hit or miss. Their earlier albums are definitely the most pulverizing and cathartic examples of depressive/doomy black metal- listen to Dictius Te Necare.( Also, the guy who did vocals for this album is one of the most cringe tryhard edgelords in black metal, and that's saying something)
P.S this comment was written before Brad was laughing hysterically at Dictus Te Necare on the 'highest rated metal album' snippet. Not cool Brad, not cool >:(
Sorry is a great DSBM band. I like Sorry
Wtf that Sepultura split is awesome! One of the best examples of proto-black metal
Six Feet Under wohooo! Let's go BREE BREE BREE
Illud Divinum Insanus is one of the more popular bad metal albums, maybe even the most popular. All that being said it's slightly grown on me
I understand the Aborted hate today since they sold out but The Purity of Perversion is a great album, a death metal classic
Torsofuck is just mindless fun stuff, so is Hatebeak
That Tougher than nails album has some insane lore behind it, I'd suggest do some research on that and read some interviews
Even Candlemass' worst album sounds so good is a testament to their legendary status
Folk metal is not one of my favourite genres either, but it's a lot of fun especially live
The Gathering has probably the best female clean metal vocalist ever, and this song doesn't do that justice
Cradle of Filth has some absolute classics but the mid outweights the bangers unfortunately
NSD could be considered the worst of the Ozzy era, but Black Sabbath has wayy worse. Listen to Born Again and tell me if that isn't much much worse
Jag Panzer are classic, they have a lot of memorable stuff
WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT that Discharge album. Thanks for not talking about it Brad :)
In a wierd way over the years I've grown a form of affection towards Lulu, in a novelty kind of way
wtf who put Parkway Drive in the same collection of old school metal acts?
Anthrax is one of the big 4 of thrash and you put it under speed metal? ( Also Brad not all thrash metal is Slayer -_- )
Venom Inc is a band with only one of the core Venom members and the same lineup as 1991 Venom. So they are essentially wish Venom lol
Toxic sounds more power metal than speed metal
Don't understand why OP wants to distinguish power metal ( I guess he is talking about European power metal here) and US power metal. Def on average the former is faster than the latter, but the lines are very very blurred- so much so that this partition doesn't make sense
Iced Earth- Jan 6th core metal
Why is Kamelot in both categories lol( Btw Brad there is some really good power metal out there, listen to Blind Guardian or Helloween)
Hammerfall is great
Queensryche's first two albums are considered prog metal essentials but I agree this album is ass
Probot is a metal project of Dave Grohl. That album has some bangers
Ok that's alll I gotta say. Peace out
also the trha is unfortunate since trha is like the best black metal band imo thats still making black metal today, and the person behind it is really cool, its just that its a split and the other side didnt do very well
Three different categories for Kamelot, actually!
Also, that 0.75/5 Stoner Metal album is definitely one of the worst out there.
@@anuraglakshminarayan4559 Well, the point is that album ranked 0.75 is definitely a worthy 0 contender alongside a couple other albums listed like that one all-time worst black metal album and the album with the compressed to death vocals.
I made a huge mistake looking up some of these album covers.
Half of these albums are no BAD albums, some sub genres themselves are acquired tastes, like In Jeraspunta by Dark Tribe, if you only hear the first 30 seconds you would think it has a rating of 2
no idea what was going on with the dislikes and the comment section, checked r/youtubedrama and was relieved
@@IsraDevilEthan is 100% a Zionist or at the very least upholds Zionist views, energy, and confused desires (he wants Palestinians to live but also thinks Israel deserves the land too? That's not how it works) Just another hypocritical take from Mr. Ethan Klein himself.
@@IsraDevilIf Israelis aren't a monolith, why are you spreading the antisemitic claim that 90% of the jewish population adheres to zionist ideology?
So funny seeing all the death metal CD's I bought as a teenager appear on this list. Gotta love a bit of torsofuck
This is my favorite video of yours so far. man it was good!
You lost a long time fan today homie. Apologizing for hanging with Ethan and Hila without even trying to defend it is pathetic. Just stay in your room if you have no spine.
Unironically love Waking the Cadaver, "Beyond Cops, Beyond God" goes dummy. Also wild that Brad has never even heard of the Brutal DM or Slam genres
Venom is like bog standard metal. The fact it showed up multiple times in speed metal means either that's a great genre, or such a niche genre that it crosses over with a bunch of other genres and venom was the only one that fit whatever the speed genre is supposed to be.
Maybe it's both? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Naaaah I know Brad didn't dismiss my GOATs Manilla Road like that
Slough Feg too??
4:09 - Brad's reaction to the sudden screaming is gold
A blaze in the northern sky review would be so sick
3:50 Bethlehem is actually peak, this is just a rerecording of a REALLY good album, shame that was your first experience with them 😭
so when's the Skeleton Metal X reaction, Brad?
I'm Polish and it's amazing to see Polish representation in the worst black metal albums of all time
Polish dungeon synth is such a joy because i swear ive heard many synth songs mixed with those fucking vocals
Kamelot is actually one of my favorite bands, but their first three albums were basically glorified demos, and they didn't get good until they got an actual professional producer in 1999.
dream theater’s my guilty pleasure band 😭
Dream Theater is a band for metal elitists. It doesn't make sense for they being a guilty pleasure band.
In defense of most Folk Metal bands, they basically just make a bunch of drinking songs.
Eluveitie is fire, though.
These albums are how the latest A7x sounds to my ears
This is a certified metal classic.
I unironically own and listen to that Torsofuck album
Also, brads reaction to Slam Metal is about as beautiful and as perfect as i expected(I love all the slam and brutal death metal albums)
Surprised to see Metalizer on the bottom of the power metal list. I knew not even the fans liked it, but I didnt think it would be THAT low.
You know it's good entertainment when Brad gives the librarian look followed by childish giggle.
Brad your hair was really good in this video :) good job on the video!
23:14 Hermetica mentioned
In theory, I would be a huge fan of witch Broadway metal. I imagine it would be like 90s Swans except heavier on Jarboe soliloquy and guitar solos.
You should do best metal albums of every genre now. That would be sick.
Vorak's Triumph of the Will is like what the Angels sound like in Evangelion, lol.
I'm sorry, Hatebeak does NOT deserve to be on this list
Hell yeah. The OG pig squealing death metal band Waking the Cadaver. As I am watching... Brad didn't listen to the so bad it's amazing masterpiece "chased through the woods...." I don't remember the full title. It has everything from the generic documentary sample of a serial killer.. to the illegible lyrics.. to the straight up pig 🐖 squeals...
"Shredded wheat.. shredded shredded shredded and shredded wheat ...."
afraid i may have brainrot because not only do i like a number of these bands (sorry, waking the cadaver, torsofuck) but i recognized a good number. SHREDDED WHEAAAAT
love you king keep your head up
We really need an insane based rich guy to donate for a Mirror Reaper review
it's not that serious lil bro
most of Bethlehem's music is excellent. that album is a terrible "remake" of their classic, Sardonischer Untergang im Zeichen irreligiöser Darbietung (SUiZiD).
@@gaynebula6439 if you want fun Black Metal, check out the Belgian band Lugubrum.
This video gives me the same feeling as when a Brit shits on the US. Like does the US suck? Sure, but I don't want to hear it from a brit. Does Waking the Cadaver suck? Sure, but I don't want to hear it from someone who has never heard of brutal death metal.
Some of these are favorites of mine. Critics suck. I love that Cradle of Filth album. Torsofuck and Waking The Cadaver are brutal!
Kaatharian Life Code by Darkthrone... It's one of the first Darkthrone songs I have ever heard. The last riff made my hair stand on end. Was disappointed to see Vintersorg on here. And was that Madhouse by Anthrax, I heard? Man...
hey would you consider reviewing Live Through This by Hole? very critically acclaimed 1994 grunge album
