I agree with you. I think the Armenian people, by and large, have reasons to be proud of the way they handle the unfortunate business of having to imprison people. It's been said that a society can be judged by the way they treat their prisoners -- and, by _this_ metric, Armenia's is a fine society, as far as I can tell! And, as a Christian myself, I believe that this admirable treatment is largely the product of Armenia's status as the world's oldest Christian community -- and I'd like to see how it compares and contrasts with Azerbaijan, and how _they_ treat their prisoners!!

The prisoners seem less barbaric in Armenia. Prisons are supposed to be there to rehabilitate someone so they can be put back into society, there is no need for greater harshness when it's not needed.
@@taabraizakhtar7302 that's fine to try rehabilitation, but imo some criminals don't deserve that chance. Murder comes to mind. The victims don't get second changes, their murderers shouldn't either. Or people who rape and abuse children. Some crimes should be punished with loss of freedom for their life. Even this is way too nice for the most evil of evil people.
As a professional in Mental Health and specially Addiction (I am in recovery as well so it's intimate knowledge) I am so impressed that they have a methadone program! This is important because being in Prison is already bad enough, when you add the addiction part it becomes quite literally Hell. This should be a standard practice, but the stigma remains in the US. Addiction can make you commit crimes that you would never ever do sober, and my heart goes out to both inmates and victims.
Thank you Matt for that insightful comment. I agree with you 100%. You have to help people in prison who have a chance at getting out. Rehabilitation programs are woefully few and far between.
Methadone program: great idea to ATTEMPT to treat addiction. It's not the best, but it's better than nothing at all. Two thumbs up for my Armenian brothers!
I'm on methadone and I was able to completely turn my life around over the years. With that being said, I've also seen a lot of people who abuse it or a lot of people go out and get addicted to a different drug

Once, in late 70's I spoke at length with a refugee from Armenia - his success in the US had nothing to do with the political agenda he escaped from decades early in Armenia. His story was one of sorrow for the land and communities he'd grown up in, abject poverty submitted upon the local peoples, and a success story in the US. Having no previous knowledge of the persecution of Armenians under the Turks (and others), I listened to his personal story with naive innocent revolution of what the Armenian people endured. I only wish I'd written down his words as spoken, but as an 18yr old friend of the family I simply considered myself blessed in hearing first hand the journey, and the political actions causing the need of, of this man.
I am Armenian from Armenia... i must admit this is surprising even for me... the jails/prisons i know bere are much much crowded and worse. This particular Armavir prison is actually not bad... really surprised.
When a nation of people have proper traditional family values you don't need brutal conditions to keep people from offending. Just being away from their families should be enough to deter them. Most of these people will be released back into society at some point, what good does it do to have conditions so bad that your prison is nothing more than a monster factory? Of course some people are just broken and can't be rehabilitated, but there's no reason to create even bigger monsters out of them.
You could be right as I have been in prison and for some it’s hell and for some like me it was a downside to my trade an occupational hazard so to speak
Look, Armenians are tough people. They have outlived ALL their enemies, & they are HIGHLY loyal to their nation & their people, but they are also highly civilized. Don't be fooled by the fact that this prison is more civilized than most modern big cities in the west. Just because the Armenians are civil to each other doesn't mean they are soft. This small group of people have outlived the Roman & Ottoman empires, they outlasted communism & multiple monarchies. They outlived Christian Tsarist Russia & Islamic Caliphates. I don't know any other nation or peoples on earth where 2/3s of the population could be wiped out in a genocide (Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923 carried out by the ottoman turks) yet the people have somehow come back stronger & more united.
Armenia is one of the few countries in the world where crimes against children are almost none existant. I know for a fact that your child would be returned to you, even if you lose them in a big crowd of hundreds of thousands. During the recent velvet revolution, not one child was targeted. Not even the grown ups had severe injury, only a hand full out of half a million protesting for days.
24:00 "the food help my brother in law and the other prisoner not to feel so alone while they are lock up in here" These are the most civil and most caring women. Bravo to all the families that are taking care of the prisoner.

Cuz if he doesn't have what he wants, the guard might disappear with his entire family. This guys are very connected outside and very dangerous for the guards outside the prison.
@@donnar9864 Noah and Donna, I couldn't agree with you more! Homeless and elderly people whom have never committed a crime in their lives and have worked and paid tax would very much appreciate secure, heated and ventilated accommodation in which food is provided, along with laundry and with the electricity and water bills paid! Most of those cells were in effect studio apartments, with kitchens, toilets and showers, and living and sleeping quarters. Many honest, decent citizens don't have that! Even the drug addicts get free drugs every day, those funds should be diverted and the convicts should not be given such luxuries.
Homelessness is extremely rare in Armenia. Probably only about .1% could be homeless. But this doesn’t mean that they’re not very poor. Many family struggle to keep food on the table because of the years of corruption in government. Armenians are so resilient.
The main officer (i.e. the one helping the docu-team; Aram I think his first name is?) is very charismatic. He handles the prisoners with respect and is open and honest with the docu-team. Contrary to some officers interviewed in other "Thoughest Prisons" episodes, where bribes are an obvious problem, he even admits that some of the guards take bribes and says it's one of their main security threats. He seems like a man trying to do his job as best he can, with the limited resources he's given. Great documentary as always, btw!
Armenia as a whole kinda runs on bribes haha. You want a drivers licence or some document or whatever, just pay a bribe you'll get it quick. Don't and you'll be stuffed around forever. Its kinda expected cause pay is often so low and all. It's different but strangely all works quite well. 😀 It's really a lovely place and lovely people where everyones quite respectful and considerate of eachother and family is everything. 🙂
@@aluckyman1475 Ive lived my whole life in Armenia and I really see the big changes at least in my city, whoever tries to bribe other people film it or make A HUGE deal of it that whole Vanadzor gets to know about it, that's why the corruption cases has decreased, alas still not fully

Right. Some of the idiots, commenting about how comfy things are or about Madagascar, never even put an effort to consider the price, which was payed to have things the way they are... Well it's not corrupt anymore, we had a revolution recently and things are ok so far. We're just humaine people and as nation we are like one big family. We don't want anyone to suffer in jails. And most of this people are not violent criminals like gangsters in USA. And this thieves in law make the life of violent criminals(like child molesters) very unpleasant.
And Mafia never controlled the state. Oligarchs and corrupt politicians did. Mafia only took control over crime and that's why we don't have any violent street crimes.

Rehabilitation programs are woefully few and far between.
metadon hell of a drug, i say suboxone. But this is better than nothing you are right about that.

I'm surprised they give to them
I'm on methadone and I was able to completely turn my life around over the years. With that being said, I've also seen a lot of people who abuse it or a lot of people go out and get addicted to a different drug

Are Armenian women male or female?
I can only imagine how terrified the cameraman was when he entered the maximum security cells 😂

Armenia has relatively low crime and it’s a homogeneous society as well.
Word!! 🙏🏻
@@jmelkis It is a very corrupt society as well, like they mentioned in the documentary. A broken society.
I would never forget this documentary the rest of my life
This gotta be one of the best prisons I ever seen
Very friendly Armenian guards and convicts
I believe that prisons should be a farm setting so they can grow and raise their own food.
Agreed
You could be right as I have been in prison and for some it’s hell and for some like me it was a downside to my trade an occupational hazard so to speak
or let them fix the highways but heavily guarded of course
Like Angola?
In Kenya they do that...so that unskilled inmates can get something to do
This Armenian Prison looks very nice and clean, Officers looks very correct with inmates. Some other Prisons are living Hell.
They know if they can get killed if cause problems.
Madagascar or Philippines are two places you DO NOT want to get locked up. It is your death guaranteed.

These prisoner are a cash cow homeless arent
It's really a lovely place and lovely people where everyones quite respectful and considerate of eachother and family is everything.

It's a mafia state. I don't even know why a prison exists in Armenia. It's too corrupt.
