  • Behind Bars Season 2 Episode 6: Armavir Prison, Armenia | Prison Documentary
Behind Bars - Bogota, Colombia: • Behind Bars 2: The Wor...
Once, inmates in Armenian prisons fell into the hands of the "Thieves in Law"- a criminal brotherhood rejecting state authority and living by its own code. They control the prison and control drug trade and smuggling. Nobody knows their leaders, but their power is immense. Armavir prison is the first attempt at limiting their influence by locking them into dedicated cell blocks to protect the other prisoners.
Georg Avangyan is afraid. He's in trouble with the "Thieves in Law". Smuggled goods were found in his cell several times. This time, it was a kitchen knife. He's not afraid of the prison management, but of the brotherhood's power. The "Thieves in Law" expect more cell searches and send a signal to Georg's co-inmates: they are to teach the repeat offender a lesson.
Panicking, Georg had himself voluntarily locked in a single cell. He may be imagining it all, though. His cell block was considered safe from the brotherhood.
Arsen Artstruni prefers to avoid the criminal subculture. He has been in prison for over 20 years. He ordered a double murder as a terrorist in the 1990s and was sentenced to death for it. He didn't see the sun during the first 8 years. While his punishment was converted to life in prison, he has no idea if he will ever be released. He hasn't lost his will to live, though. Arsen is the first Armenian prisoner with a university degree in psychology.

I've seen the documentary about the Madagascar prison. Reality is that guy definitely did not eat only manioc for 38 years because if he did he'd be dead within a year. It does not contain your minimum daily proteins so your muscles will deteriorate, including your heart.
Like they said, many people in that prison died from starvation, the guy that was in there for 38 years most likely found a way to get food.

I agree with you. I think the Armenian people, by and large, have reasons to be proud of the way they handle the unfortunate business of having to imprison people. It's been said that a society can be judged by the way they treat their prisoners -- and, by _this_ metric, Armenia's is a fine society, as far as I can tell! And, as a Christian myself, I believe that this admirable treatment is largely the product of Armenia's status as the world's oldest Christian community -- and I'd like to see how it compares and contrasts with Azerbaijan, and how _they_ treat their prisoners!!

Definately one of the better prisons.. I would choose that one in Armenia instead of those in South & North America or Africa like Madasgascar... those prisons there are simply inhumane and just make these criminals even more dangerous for all parties.. though I would obviously chose my own countries prisons system.. look up danish maximum security prison and see the pictures - and get an idea of why-
To an extent you can measure a society on how the threat their worst offenders, IMO Denmark gone to far the other way... but Denmark also decade after decade rank nr1 on the worlds least c000rrupt country on the mentioned Transperacy International so a very regulated society with high integrity, though also one of the oldest country and the flag of Denmark is the oldest flag on the planet.
But it stretches back to the origin of the vikings that originated from Denmark..
England was also part of Denmark until England became sovereign in 1066.. back then England was called Danelaw... also why many English citys are danish named and some of them ends on "by" = city in danish... like Derby.. the US city "New York", also comes from danish... it comes from York in England, that was handed that name by Denmark and the danish viking back when it part was part of Denmark.. as in "Yorvik".. but the heritage can be read on Yorks viking museum.

This is important because being in Prison is already bad enough, when you add the addiction part it becomes quite literally Hell. This should be a standard practice, but the stigma remains in the US. Addiction can make you commit crimes that you would never ever do sober, and my heart goes out to both inmates and victims.

Once, in late 70's I spoke at length with a refugee from Armenia - his success in the US had nothing to do with the political agenda he escaped from decades early in Armenia. His story was one of sorrow for the land and communities he'd grown up in, abject poverty submitted upon the local peoples, and a success story in the US. Having no previous knowledge of the persecution of Armenians under the Turks (and others), I listened to his personal story with naive innocent revolution of what the Armenian people endured. I only wish I'd written down his words as spoken, but as an 18yr old friend of the family I simply considered myself blessed in hearing first hand the journey, and the political actions causing the need of, of this man.

Don't be fooled by the fact that this prison is more civilized than most modern big cities in the west. Just because the Armenians are civil to each other doesn't mean they are soft. This small group of people have outlived the Roman & Ottoman empires, they outlasted communism & multiple monarchies. They outlived Christian Tsarist Russia & Islamic Caliphates. I don't know any other nation or peoples on earth where 2/3s of the population could be wiped out in a genocide (Armenian Genocide of 1915-1923 carried out by the ottoman turks) yet the people have somehow come back stronger & more united.

When a nation of people have proper traditional family values you don't need brutal conditions to keep people from offending. Just being away from their families should be enough to deter them. Most of these people will be released back into society at some point, what good does it do to have conditions so bad that your prison is nothing more than a monster factory? Of course some people are just broken and can't be rehabilitated, but there's no reason to create even bigger monsters out of them.

Most of those cells were in effect studio apartments, with kitchens, toilets and showers, and living and sleeping quarters.

I did a prison supervisor exchange with my Armenian counterpart. At the time I was the Security director at a large prison here in the US. At least they're attempting to modernize their prisons. They've been sending their managers and such over here to tour and see our facilities and apply what they learn to their institutions. They still have a ways to go but they are making progress. The prison I went to was brand new and virtually identical to some of the prisons being built here in the US. It's funny that people think it's shocking that "we" don't carry weapons inside the fences. Think about it. ANYTHING we carry could easily be used against us in a fight. During my years as an officer at a medium security prison, I only ever carried a radio, cuffs and pepper spray for about a year. I was involved in many fights but never got hurt too badly. Used my cuffs a number of times though. No way would I take a baton or especially a firearm inside a prison.
