Thanks man. I want to become free from the single-employer relationship, but I realize now it’s through full time first and then freelance on the side. I have been designing in the industry for over 8 years but I have a lot to learn still.
So true on the referrals... I still have my full-time job but I've seen some pattern of my clients referring and sending over leads to me without even trying. It all comes down to customer service, communication and able to meet their design goals. Loving the videos!! Keep em coming.
Hi thank you for your advice, I just saw your interview with The Futur got to know you. Freelancing has not been easy for me and I think I’ve never been successful with it. Recently I was working at a design studio but the job dynamic was making me miserable and I quitted; I tried to freelance while in my full time job, but I was missing the energy to push me to go and build relationships or do extra projects for my portfolio; I guess that part of my designer soul was corrupted and I thought I could make it with the money I was earning from my full time job. Nowadays I’m struggling with economic issues, I really need to get to work but I’m currently developing my book, because it’s really hard to get a well paid design job here in Mexico, and even harder to find a place with ethics.
I would definitely be interested in a freelance series. I just graduated college and weighing my job options. I really want to learn all I can about freelancing.
Great actionable tips in this video! Im trying to slowly build my freelance practice, and I often get upset im still stuck in-house, but I heard a lot of things that I could be doing right here right now to help me be able to go full time freelance in the future. I need to be building my creative network, work on building up my freelance portfolio with quality work from quality clients, and keep learning the business of design from design from influencers like yourself on a daily basis. Daily reminders like this video help keep me focused. Thanks Ran for the tips
Thank you for this video, I'm totally agree with the part about lower prices at the beginning. I am french Iam so glad to understand all your words love your accent 😉
Would love to watch such a series! I am looking to go freelance after university but have been unclear if it possible. This advice has confirmed I should get a UX job and freelance on the side. Thanks Flux!
Your advice are really important to me and i want to say thanks for all the good stuff you'r posting on your channel. It really help me to go ahead in my professional life and i really enjoy the good vibes you giving to us through your videos
Hi Ran, glad to have stumbled across your videos, and now I have some questions and I would appreciate your reply plz as I'm confused about how to start web design. 1- Would you recommend a person get a) a decent grounding in Html, CSS, and Javascript, b) study the Webflow tutorials and then maybe the c) Webflow Masterclass in order to use Webflow much more efficiently? I ask this as I'm seriously thinking of booking myself up for an intensive short in-class practical responsive web design course soon that covers Html, CSS, and Javascript. I would need to study the course curriculum beforehand to benefit from the course, I presently only know basic Html and CSS. I am just confused at present as to how to go further, but your videos on Webflow have got me thinking. 2- Is Webflow enough to start freelance web design for small to medium size local businesses? 3- How secure are the websites if hosted by Webflow? 4- Is there any backend work needed? If so then what languages are needed for that? 5- I have already seen some local company websites that are not good at all and not mobile responsive,, I know them personally, what about if I re-design them in Webflow, then offer to sell them for a low cost alongside a monthly fee by way of a retainer to cover the hosting, maintenance, modifications, and use that as a means to build up my portfolio in the beginning? 6- The site and account plans on Webflow are a little confusing. Seems that the Pro account allows an unlimited amount of projects to be made but each website project needs a separate hosting package from Webflow? Is this correct? As it seems that it's much easier to host with them also, I mean hassle-free. 7- Does Webflow make web design much easier? I ask this as I've played about with some website builders and seen them to be so limited, and then Wordpress seems to need PHP coding for certain themes and plugins and the templates cost quite a bit at times. 8- Does Webflow have any features for appointment bookings? 9- Does Webflow have any features for online ordering and secure payments for restaurants/takeaways? 10- Does Webflow have an email prescription to get emailed automatically for new articles on a blog, or to get new offers, ... 11- Is it possible to make a WebApp with Webflow? 12- Is it possible to add a Geofencing feature? 13- Are Push notifications possible? 14- Are there any features that help to gain more leads for the businesses? 15- Is it possible through Webflow to make some niche blogs then once enough traffic has built up to make them into affiliate marketing blogs? 16- Do you have any other advice, do's, don't's, tips as I wish to make a career in web design but I am somewhat confused and hesitant in case I go about it the wrong way, I have at present a tough financial situation and wish to make a respectable career that would allow me some freedom to do other things in life such as sports and short trips? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing this! I’m a young student freelance designer and developer in China and I’m trying to get my freelance business up from the ground. How do you handle the business of design and development respectively with your freelance clients? Thanks!
I lost my 13 year job a few months ago doing design and website builds. I am also a graphic designer. Still don't know why I was let go. They can't afford all of the positions I was doing. I edited video, did the print design, did the front end updates to website, designed the sites, hosted them and maintained the servers they were on. I would like to start my own business but could use some advice on what to do.
Hey Ran, I'm looking to get into UI/UX but I don't know what sort of post-secondary education I should go into. I've gotten a lot of mixed opinions on the topic, some saying to take a general course like computer science and build a portfolio part-time while studying that and others saying design school really helps. I'd love to know your opinion and what you did yourself Look forward to hearing from you! Cheers, Chris.
No don’t take computer science unless you tryna go into coding/developer/programming. UX/ui is creative/marketing work. So you need to learn graphic designs fundamentals and build fake work to get practice. Do this either through school, or like me, self taught.
Just the video i was looking for. I've just posted a Facebook post on a Danish designer group about this problem. Do you have any recomendations when you are 18 years old and do not have the oppotunity to work at a bureau?
When you go to full time interviews and they ask where you want to be in your career 2 years from now is it okay to say a freelance designer? I would assume they would want you to stay as a senior or similar. Might sound like an obvious question but I find it tricky.
I would recommend not mentioning wanting to become a freelancer. Never tell the interviewer you want their job, never tell the interviewer you would use the job your applying for to get you to where you want to be as nothing more than a stepping stone. You want to show your long term vision and how it could most benefit the company youre applying to work for. Explaining your freelance aspirations will hurt you in that situation, in my opinion.
Definitely second the "don't start on upwork" advice. Looking forward to hearing more about freelancing!
did you do this? why, what happened?
I wanted to be project management freelancer. I will follow your advice.
Thanks man. I want to become free from the single-employer relationship, but I realize now it’s through full time first and then freelance on the side. I have been designing in the industry for over 8 years but I have a lot to learn still.
I think that series would be wonderful!
I'm definitely looking to learn from someone that's in the position I want to be in.
So true on the referrals... I still have my full-time job but I've seen some pattern of my clients referring and sending over leads to me without even trying. It all comes down to customer service, communication and able to meet their design goals. Loving the videos!! Keep em coming.
your channel is gold.
About to make the jump to freelance from working in the industry for 10 years.
This video is very helpful. Please make a few more videos on this.
Please make more videos how to get started. Thank you
Thanks, these are very valuable experience, unlike many other over-selling RUclips videos.
Thank you for this video. I have determined that I really should get a full time job first, and then I can freelance later.
*build your value by building your portfolio*
thanks for this video. A lot of professionals think about full freelance

UX/ui is creative/marketing work. So you need to learn graphic designs fundamentals and build fake work to get practice.

Y'all see the floating sphere in the background?
Can u do hosting on webflow do u host ur sites on webflow?
How can you do the same work both in a company and freelance? I think most employer contracts forbid that, don't they?
Just the video i was looking for. I've just posted a Facebook post on a Danish designer group about this problem. Do you have any recomendations when you are 18 years old and do not have the oppotunity to work at a bureau?
As said in the video - send in work for companies / brands / people you want to work for, do something for them

Eric Stahl Thanks for the advise, appreciate it

One question: what is that floating orb behind you?
