  • @sebastiannielsen
    @sebastiannielsen 4 года назад +67

    Some of these keypads actually DO have their tamper-alarm relay closer to the edge than the actual relay, OR a reed switch, just to detect any unauthorized external magnets.
    In case of stand alone systems however, its uncommon that they are wired to an actual alarm, BUT the tamper switch can be wired to a "disconnector", which is a box that is mounted on the secure side, that contains a bistable relay. This bistable relay has an reset button (or reset keyswitch), and once triggered, it will semi-permanently disconnect the normal relay's output from the actual lock or door strike, requiring someone to go in with a manual key, and push the reset button (or reset with an key) to restore normal functionality.
    This then prevents someone from tampering with the relay, because once the tamper switch triggers, even for a split second, it will trigger the disconnector and then it will be useless to tamper with the relay.
    A disconnector is a way to increase the security level of a stand alone system, to a security level that is very close to a split system for a very cheap cost, provided that the stand alone keypad you use, do have sufficent security for both tampering and external magnetic fields.
    This without resorting to any external monitoring company or guards or someone that can respond to the alarm, while still giving reactive security by removing the possibility to power the lock from the outside once tampering is detected.
    A disconnector box can also be built very cheaply using just a bistable relay and a button.
    Even more cheaply if you use a latched relay, but then it would require manual reset after each power loss.
    here is a manual to the SK6 disconnector box: docplayer.se/4774606-En-sv-sk6-security-unit-installation-manual-siemens-ab-security-products.html

      It looked like a beeper/buzzer was on the circuit board. I assume it's to beep when pressing a button. Will the alarm also cause that to go into continuous beeping? I hope not, because then you couldn't have a silent alarm.

    • @sebastiannielsen
      @sebastiannielsen 4 года назад +1

      @@mjbirdClavdivs Depends on model, but in many cases it can be turned off with a configuration command or jumper.

    • @TheRealColBosch
      @TheRealColBosch 4 года назад +5

      I mean, the ideal system would *only* have the code input device on the outside, with all the actual circuitry within the secure space. That this lock doesn't do this is really annoying, since it includes a "door open" box that presumably does go on the inside, so they could have put the relays in there and eliminated this form of attack entirely.

    • @sebastiannielsen
      @sebastiannielsen 4 года назад +1

      @@TheRealColBosch The reason is cost. Its considerable cheaper to have everything on the outside, otherwise you have to double the amount of electronics. Especially for low to medium security applications.
      This also gives the installer a choice if they want a less or more secure installation, or want more convience of not having to run wires eveywhere.
      Also codes isn't secure at all, they can easily be peeped or guessed in most cases. Especially if the color in the buttons that are for the code starts to disappear, so you now only need to figure out the order.
      So in these types of installations, there is three security levels available:
      1 - Standalone installation - usually good for low-security applications, for example a staff entry in a shop, where anyone tampering with the lock would be very noticable, or where unauthorized access isn't a very big deal - for example a door to a stairwell in a apartment complex.
      2 - Standalone installation with disconnector box - Usually good for medium-security applications, where you want the security benefits of a split installation, but not the full blown system with all whistles and bells. Usually entrances that require a little more security - for example a unguarded office entry on a office building.
      3 - Split, full blown systems with centralized managment - This is used for high security, where the access is the sole way to get complete access, usually with automated disarming of a alarm system too.

      In some of these, such as a very similar one I'm reviewing now for Amazon Vine, the 2nd relay isn't for anti tamper at all, it's simply a second relay that can be activated by up to 10 users, with the first by up to 1000. It does have a light sensor for anti tamper that would sound the buzzer, but no gyro or hall sensor that would have been better. I'm suggesting in the review that it's mounted with the right side against a wall or frame to protect the main relay.

      The alarm interface is just a dumb open loop and the magnet trick bypasses any control the keypad may normally have over its relay. Closing the loop in any way will trip the alarm. Relays or some other form of electrical isolation are commonly used in access control and alarm systems because they allow different parts of the system to operate on separate power supplies without worrying about compatibility and faults in one system bringing down everything else.

    • @coyoteseattle
      @coyoteseattle 4 года назад +6

      In this case, it's because this is a very well designed keypad which directly powers the electromagnet, and handles all authentication on the insecure side of the door. You'll note that the only conductors coming out of the power supply go straight into the keypad, and the locking mechanism is also wired straight to it. In a sane design, this wouldn't be possible, but this is what you get when you order a $40 access control system kit on Amazon.

    Try with mine (Retekess K10EM-W, looks very similar): the alarm is set off via a luminosity sensor, not with a reed.
    And moreover: smart people don't connect the relay of the RFID reader to the opener. Smart people connect the wiegand lines (usually labelled D+ and D-), and the central unit will take care of users, authentication, opening etc.
    Leaving the control in the outside unit is always exploitable.
    Using the magnet in a situation where wiegand reader + central unit were properly deployed will result in absolutely nothing. Wiegand is pretty secure by today's standard, this setup was not.

    It's been suggested that human brains seek and rely on closure. Once you start something, it's difficult to just let it go early, and it can become a mental burden until then as some small part of your mental processing is kept up by it, sort of like a computer program kept running in the background taking up resources.
    So anyway yeah, waiting for that alarm to go off...

  • @Nerdnumberone

    I wonder if any alarm company has tried selling alarms with at least 2 board configurations, randomly distributed so you need to open the box (triggering the anti-tamper switch) to know which configuration you have. That would take more money, of course, and if they were willing to take effort to increase security, they wouldn't have this sort of set-up.
    Another idea is to have the tamper-switch (or switches) positioned so that you couldn't easily trigger the open relay without simultaneously triggering the alarm. Since relays use electromagets anyway, there would be the risk of the open signal hitting the alarm or vice versa. Still, the powerful hostile magnet is probably a lot more potent than the tiny relays.

    Maybe when manufacturers make exciting new keypads with entirely new guts and logic, they should keep the outside, including the enclosure, display, and buttons, all the same. That way, if someone encounters one in the wild, they will not be able to figure out the specific model, so they can't use a simple internet search to find the exploits and traps.
    Of course, it's also just super dumb to put important relays _inside_ the keypad.
    Also, great idea not triggering the alarm in the video. That was a clever way to get a _lot_ of comments. Sneaky.

  • @coladict
    @coladict 4 года назад

    On the bright side, there's no model numbers when you look at it, and the wiring would usually be hidden in the wall, so a burglar wouldn't have the means of determining this in advance, and would probably experiment and hopefully trigger the alarm.

    in my experience using these standalone systems (i built props and did low voltage wiring for escape room games--i would not use these in a context where actual security was a consideration), at least 10% of them can be bypassed with a sharp tap on the keypad or whatever panel the keypad is mounted to. It seemed that the return mechanisms in the relays were so weak that gentle vibrations would cause the reeds inside to flutter and make contact, unlocking your lock
