- Sylvia Rivera is known as a mother of the transgender movement. She began living and working on the streets of New York City around the age of 10. There she met Marsha P. Johnson and the two became like a family, nurturing anyone in need. When they could not find support among the LGBTQ community, they created their own home and resources with a group originally called Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries to shelter, feed, and advocate for transgender youths.
There is so much more to Sylvia's story we will continue exploring at Stonewall National Monument throughout the years. For this Hispanic Heritage Month, we hear Sylvia’s own voice discuss her early beginnings in an audio clip from Eric Marcus with the Making Gay History podcast.
