Learn to fly the P-51D Mustang in IL2: Battle of Bodenplatte and be familiar with its cockpit, engine start, takeoff, and landing procedures. Various engine limitations, combat use, important airspeeds, and notes on flying the P-51D Mustang are also included.
Comments and feedback are always welcome, so if this video helped you out hit the like button and let me know in the comments below. Cheers!
Man your videos are the best, this plane is a beast, gorgeous and deadly, thank you for helping us out with all the procedures, been flying Sturmovink since 04 or so, best sim for me.
Cheers dntlss, I always use the real manuals where available so what you have is essentially an abbreviated version to let you apply what you need easily in a sim :-)
The cockpit so simple compared to other aircrafts , everything is logic and ordered
laughs in a fw190
The cockpit always makes sense to the designer lol
it's basically layed out like all the German fighters of WW2 :D
simple? the damned thing has instruments to read from everywhere... 3:00 at this point I was expecting his to show a control to be under your ass lol
Now we just need a good dog fighting vid for the P-51
I have never seen this game before, and I could not love it more. I need to see if I can get it for myself and put what you’ve told us into use...
If you get it and have any questions the community is very friendly and helpful over on the forums!
@@RequiemsACTL What are the forums? I'm assuming you mean the game's forum, and if so, could you provide me with a link?

Love it, especially the fact that it's Chuck Yeagers plane!
What a STUNNING plane and what a STUNNING video. Thankyou, Meester Req!!
A well-detailed and thorough explanation. Cheers.
Great video. Straight forward and no BS!
Just what I needed.
Another great tutorial, as always. Great job, Req!
Cheers Malloy :-)
Sterling work my commonwealth friend. Ripper
Excellent narration. That was a learning experience.
Thanks again Jeff, I always try to do my narration nicely and avoid excessive "waffling on and on" so to speak
I am certain that om DCS thw bomb and gun switches were on the panel in front of the stick and the turbo switches etc were on the lower left panel of the dashboard
for sure
Probably changed depending on the exact model. The P51 in Il-2 is a P-51D-15
. See here in Section 1, Page 2 www.avialogs.com/aircraft-n/north-american-aviation/item/4714-an-60-je-1-flight-operating-instructions-p-51d-and-p-51k-series
DCS p-51 is very late version, it can use difrent rockets,
p-51-d25 has carb heat intaled too
This is my favorite episode
ah been waiting for this :)
Yeah you and a few other people asked me where this one was....had to finish it after I released the other two :-)
Thanks!
ok will keep my notes beside me,for first flight,. ;)
Once you fly it a few times you won't need the notes much anymore :-)
lol,i will keep them beside me for a wee bit yet though ;)
What makes me hate IL2 is that their is no option for any clickable cockpit. It just makes me mad. So many key bindings to remember. I usually just like to key bind specific things I use the most and do clickable options other things
Cool as!!
Can someone please do a video on how to fly the Mustang in Combat with engine management..Please
So happy they added 150 octane fuel. So many other games refuse to give the P-51D its 150 octane and then put it up against planes like the Dora and K-4 which is just unfair.
Yeah it's something that's been asked for a while now so it's great the implemented it...I haven't tried the Spit IX with 150 octane yet, but can imagine how good that's going to be!
@@RequiemsACTL The 150 fuel produces a dramatic change in the Spit. It takes it from solidly OK to being a real threat. It will out climb everything else at max power by a comfortable margin. Sadly in game you can't use the full power for all that long.
@@TRohrich Thanks for the info!
Great vid mate
Thanks Taylor
Hey man ! thanks so much for your tutorials ! However, I would love to have acces to all the "Pilot's notes" Pages as .jpeg or .pdf files to integrate into a kneeboard, there are other around the internet, but yours are the most straight forward and up to date for all aircrafts. Do you have those files ? if yes, could you make them available? Otherwise I'll take screen grab of your videos, but that's going to be pretty time consuming xD
Hey there, the "Pilot's Notes" sections are pulled either from the "Technical Specifications" page in-game in the hangar screen or from RL manuals. I don't have them in PDF format yet so screen captures will have to do for now, sorry about that!
I'm pretty confused as I've been taught the trim should be set 3° nose down for a 2 points take off.
That way is perfectly fine too!
Hello can you do a tutorial with the K-14 gunsight. I kinda get it but I'm sure you know more to it. I do better just turning it off using fixed reticle. Works ok for me when I adjust it to 300m and 30 for wing span. But farther out and closer than 300 it kinda gets in my way considering i cant adjust it on the fly as fast as irl given my key binds. Would like to hear your thoughts on it, how you use it, tips and tricks. Thanks
I'll probably do one now because of two things. 1. The gyro sights account for gravity on bullet drop now so they'll be a little more accurate, and 2. With the new G effects there will probably be more inclination to use it... Once you start pulling enough Gs that reticule will disappear under the nose effectively rendering it useless, so with the new G effects you won't be pulling as much G all the time which should make the gyro sight a bit more useful. You really need to assign the range on an axis to get the most out a gyroscopic sight.
Hope you do it soon
no one explains when to use manual oil radiator controls. do you mind explaining?
hello their ,just wondered if you know how too ,at the mo, my mouse is set too 8way hat when you wiggle it around (default )i would like too make the mouse as "CURSOR"normal and assign my gladiator nxt 8way hat switch as hat switch ,i have no idea which camera views do what relative too the mouse or 8way on gladiator, how too assign what too which would be like a lottery win and you could have some too.....thanks very much....
Can’t get the red mixture lever to move, and every key I try doesn’t work. What’s the key for it in settings?
Great tutorial as usual, why though are airspeeds headed as K/H but done in MPH? I prefer KPH, guess I'll have to use MPH? Sorry to nit pick, forgive me.
The km/hr is a typo. I try to present speeds as they are seen in the airplane
I have a question, why are the electrical switches not included in the video? Also, why is the carburettor air and heat controls arent seen in the startup procedure (even though its already set). Is it because IL-2 only has limited switches, or is it because video time? No offense, im just asking, because i just wanted to know.
Yeah it's basically because Il-2 handles a lot of things automatically, so for Il-2 videos I tend to only focus on what's relevant for it as a result. When I do the DCS P-51 I'll cover everything as that requires more in depth knowledge.
I just came across your videos. What are you using to show the views of the cockpit?
I have a device called trackIR which is how I can move the view around using my head
Привет. Какой видео редактор ты используешь?
Is there some boost like in P-47 and FW190 which you need activate to reach full power?
No, just push the throttle to full to get to 61"
for some reason i cant start the p51 when i have the mixture in the idle possition. it said that it wouldnt start and i had to put it to 50%
I've never had a problem with starting the P51 up the way I've shown it here. The trick is to move it out of "IDLE" to the "RUN" (50%) position just as the engine starts firing up. That's the RL procedure and I always try to base my videos off the real thing where possible which future proofs it in case the devs fix the issue. In Il-2 you can just stick it at RUN and leave it there which you wouldn't do in RL.
But wait, there's more!
Yeah I had to finish this one off after releasing the other two. I wasn't expecting the patch to come out so it wasn't ready in time.
When you say 100% mixture is for emergency; do you mean when you're at emergency power (3000rpm, 67/75" mp), or as in if there's an emergency and the auto mixture fails to function?
Yes, it's related to if the auto mixture feature fails
@@RequiemsACTL Do you know if failure of auto mixture is modeled in the sim?
@@Jbroker404 I doubt it does. I just include it to cover the airplane fully as it may be added in the future updates
@@RequiemsACTL I figured the same but still wonder, as the in-game specifications mention to do things like that if auto mixture fails.
Hello to all and anyone. I am having trouble getting prop (rpm) lever to move. Any keybindings I try have no effect. Any ideas? Thank you
Check your difficulty setting. Switch to expert and see what happens. On easier settings there's an auto.engine management one which will prevent you having full control, but there's a key to turn it off as well.
Base turn should be performed with flaps fully lowered and at 120 MPH throughout the entire turn. Touchdown at 90MPH. Where did you get that method from?
Hey Onebad, the DCS P-51D manual Pages 134-136 with Figure 92, which seemed to correlate with where I got the basis of this technique from the below link in Section II, Pages 23, 26. There is no speed listed for the base turn, but about 150 mph is what felt comfortable for me when practicing. The full flap extension I waited for until established short final above 400ft AGL because it suggested to wait until the airplane is into the wind before extending flaps fully. Touchdown at 90 mph is what I expected as well. www.avialogs.com/aircraft-n/north-american-aviation/item/4714-an-60-je-1-flight-operating-instructions-p-51d-and-p-51k-series
@@RequiemsACTL Regarding base turns, when unsure how fast you should be going, for most WWII aircraft the speed is pretty much stall speed times 1.2. 150MPH for the Mustang is certainly hella high, 120MPH is within reasonable limit though could be brought a little bit lower.
Good to know, thanks :-)
il2 is gracious enough to give p51 75' MP. DCS stubbornly refuses to add that option. Cuz they can't produce enough warbirds, p51 is an underdog in its current eco system.
How do I connect the the throttle and rpm levers together
You don't. Because they are designed and intended to be used separately.
No. NASA has volunteered to assist me
if I discover new life or unknown minerals
in my present choice of recreation. Because
NASA has said what I'm doing has future
application on moons and other planets.
For our species. P-51D ? Not so much
if you know that much about it.
Question can the throttle and pitch be combined . like in the P-47 .
Not in the P-51 no. If you look carefully at the P-47 throttle you will see what looks like metal plates on the engine controls and they will move into position to lock multiple controls together when you link them.
@@RequiemsACTL Thank you that clears it up for me .
Is it possible to use the P51 while in COOP in the new DLC?
Yep, as long as you own the airplane you can use it in whatever scenario or mode you want
VR? Or tracker?
TrackIR
I get "watch the coolant temperature" messages when I fly around, an idea about that? I got radiators and such on auto as in your video...
Those technochat messages may not always be accurate, so verify the temperatures are within limits on the gauges first...if they're still too hot then you may need to reduce power / increase airspeed to lower the temperatures. Otherwise you would have to go manual and adjust it.
@@RequiemsACTL The A20's engines for example usually are WELL within limits but the techno chat starts warning!
That is directional gyro, not magnetic compass.
Doh! No idea how I screwed that one up!!
So is the P-39.ruclips.net/video/rHZKKalC4us/видео.html
Well, just be more careful next time :).
lock the tail-wheel during take-off? really? Something exclusive to p51? Cuzt hats not normal way of taking off in tailwheel aircraft in real life.
Yes that's how it was done. I have several P-51D manuals but I'll just quote the AAF Manual 51-127-5 from August 1945, page 55 "After you have pulled out and lined up on the runway, make sure that the steerable tailwheel lock is locked - it must be locked with the stick back for takeoff.." then it goes into the takeoff procedure.
Why do these cockpits look so worn, this is taking place during WW2, these planes should be brand new?
Aesthetics I suppose
