In case you haven’t noticed, Videojug is weird. It’s a weirdo. It doesn't fit in. And it doesn't WANT to fit in.
Have you ever seen it without that stupid hat on? That's weird.
I hate that I understand that reference 😂
I remember the years when my sisters and I wouldn’t even click on a video that was over 7 minutes long back when RUclips was extremely new. Now I’m looking for videos the length of whole ass movies. Things really have changed
well, they did take 70 minutes to buffer...
Yeah I remember you had to be formally invited by RUclips to upload videos over 10 minutes. You could only be invited if you had enough viewers and/ or subscribers.
Portia Rockers i try not to click on vids over 20 mins except for starkid related stuff... its been hard, almost all vids are rly long
Totally agree with this. I recently went back onto some old channels that I used to love in the early days of RUclips to rewatch their content and I found myself getting really annoyed at the short 3 minute videos. It felt like as soon as I picked a video it was already over and I had to choose another. As a consumer I realise I’m now looking for videos that are 15 minutes or longer, I rarely watch anything shorter than 15 minutes.
Remember when people had to split their videos up in multiple uploads because of the limit? Pepperidge Farm remembers!
me 5 years ago: smosh's new video is 10 MINUTES LONG??? forget it I'm not spending my time on that
me now: oooo this channel with 9000 subscribers just uploaded a 4 hour deepdown analysis video on a vlogger, I'm getting popcorn
The right opinion?

Dating tips --> pickup artists --> right wing conspiracy theories. That pretty much sums up the internet from 2010 to 2016
Gregory LaPerche .......Actually yeah I really can’t argue with that lmao
I'm confused, is that a description of progression like a flow chart. Which means you're saying that dating tips turned pick up artists into right wing conspiracy theories. Or is that a list of focused topics over the years.
@@theblackbaron4119 He's saying that consuming dating tips content typically led the viewer to pickup artists which then led to right wing conspiracy theories.
@@theblackbaron4119 Yes, what Ellen said. In addition, the creators of the content can follow that same path. Mike Cernovich is a great example of normal self help dating advice, to a mens rights activist/pick-up artists, to pizzagate conspirasy theorist. Does the content creator follow the crowd, or is the crowd following the creator. Perhaps some of both in some cases.
and then Hbomberguy started to make fun of Davis Aurini and there was light
why would you insinuate that "how to clown about while being pursued" is not a serious nor useful tutorial? Many, a time, I have been pursued, whilst the only thought in my head has been "if only I could clown about" , I believe you severely underestimate the true knowledge and prowess of videojug.
Yes. Many an hour have I spent, pondering the correct application of a lampshade as a hat, so as to disguise myself from the rascal giving me chase. Alas, I cannot say that I am surprised to hear of a bright young thing unaware of the value of clowning around in the foyer. Back in my day...

I came here to say the same thing! I feel like in the last 7 years or so, showing someone vomiting is in EVERY television show and movie (like, did it finally become "allowed" or something?), and it's just been horrible for me as a viewer. I saw the warning on this video, looked away, and then realized that this was the first time I've ever had that warning beforehand. Sarah Z is a gem, y'all.

I worked at a content farm for a year, and the timeframes you're given make it basically impossible to do anything accurately. Like, when every team member needs to produce 1 piece of longform content/day-even if you tell yourself you're going to be genuinely helpful-you end up being forced to cut corners and lie if you want to keep your job.
I knew I was responsible for creating unhelpful garbage whose sole purpose was to appear on search results. It made me miserable, but it was between that and not being able to pay rent. I think the volume demands of that sort of media company mean that everybody forced to make content in them is eventually just going to break down and start half-assing it.
Which is awful for user retention, right? You show up in the algo but you annoy people and they don't stick around.
Oh no what you are describing is RUclips right now.
I automatically dismiss "how to" videos if they have high production value because if this.
There is always some enthusiastic weirdo in their backyard/basment/garage giving far better instruction and information, because they want to and because they can.
Sounds like buzzfeed did you work for buzzfeed
Don't know if you'll see this, but how many people worked for the content farm company you worked for? I've always been curious how many employees they have to put so much content out every day.
@@kaemincha We were relatively small because the content farm was an extension of a much larger company, as part of the SEO strategy; my team had 4 people in it, but the broader company was coming up in 500 staff.
Seeing the thumbnail for the accent video has just unlocked a repressed memory for me of being in English class at age 11 watching that exact video for a task where we had to write a weather report and then perform it in an accent and I'm now incredibly confused about why the accent part was included. Especially because like,,, I'm British, why did we watch a video about a guy doing a cliche British accent????? Half my class already spoke in a strong Brummy or Yam Yam accent. In terms of video lengths, it’s important to note that, in the first 5 or so years of RUclips, there was a cap on how long videos could be. They kept upping it as time wore on and creators started making longer videos, but it started out as 8 minutes, then 12, etc.
Incidentally, this made it a lot harder to catch copyright infringement, so you could watch a whole episode of TV that the uploader had pirated in a playlist of, for example, “Buffy S4.3 parts 1-6.”
(The internet was fun back then, the heyday of Crunchyroll being a free fansub site and sketchy downloads of songs by your favorite band’s high school demos.)
Oh God. This is a blast from the past. I was a mod on a teen support forum in the 2010’s and we had a video section with advice videos, most of them were from videojug. When I was trying to find new ones to add I kept finding these weird stupid skits.

I would absolutely donate some amount of money for the "Sarah Z watches extremely weird how-to videos on zero sleep" stream.

Nobody’s gonna read this, but I’m really happy you went back and changed Abigail’s name in this description after she came out. :)
It's possible that that lyric video cutoff wasn't an original issue. I've come across at least 2-3 old RUclips videos posted in that same era I went back to that were completely functional when they first existed but just... stop in the middle now. The time will be listed properly but the video will act like it ended well before the actual end. If you're lucky there's a mirror on Dailymotion or an unlisted version on a channel they were affiliated with or something someone has found in the comments.
Those how to kiss videos played an embarrassingly large role in my teenage years 😭
VideoJug sounds exactly like something a group of friends started for fun then tried to make a living off it, this blend of serious and comedic probably happened because early RUclips was the wild west and there were no rules.
People have yet to acknowledge that early RUclips was people sticking around as the monetary incentive to start a career off of this didn't come out until much later, that's what made RUclips something no one else could replicate, free unpredictable content with no rules uploaded at whatever rate the maker felt like it.

I think the general shift in the culture of RUclips from “random home video” to, well its hard to say accurately but maybe “independent film distributor”, played a huge role in this. In the old days of RUclips, pre- & just post Google era, I think it was possible for both serious content and random fatuous comedy to coexist. I feel like back then we felt being “random” was just about the same thing as being relatable. So having a channel where you post a serious how to video, and then a parody of how to videos and old film villains made a lot more sense. The audience, of at the time I think mainly preteens, felt like the creators were relatable people who weren’t afraid to poke fun at what they did or just be “random” and zany and silly. Thus someone might stick around to watch more videos.
Now that I mention it, the whole sort of anarchic, Python inspired, zany comedy and sincere silliness we went through back then and called “being random” might make an interesting topic for a future video. I think we can see echoes of it in the prank (gone x) types of kids channels that have emerged lately, though I wanna say the early stuff was less mean spirited? I wouldn’t call anything we did in those days pranks, stunts and skits would be more like it.
Recognising Olly by voice 🤦♀️ This is another very interesting topic and I think you made justice to it. Thanks!
These internet history videos are so interesting. Thank you for the "how to behave like a vampire" one, it was hilarious and I learned nothing.
I mean, it's kind of odd to bring up the length, considering back then you literally COULDN'T make videos longer than 10 minutes. So they HAD to be on the shorter side, rather than it being only a choice. Also even uploading a video that was a couple minutes long could take over an hour.

Honestly, all the stuff about the links between Bladenmore, VideoJug, and Arcuro is just setting off 'tax evasion' bells in my head - I'm not sure if that's just me.
Something about this whole thing smacks of money laundering, especially the high investment rate but the consistently low quality of the video output and lack of oversight of the channel. Another red flag is that Bladenmore boasts such a presence in the "Gulf states" (as stated in their website press releases, and they have had offices in Abu Dhabi and Dubai) that they have a whole dedicated version of their site in Arabic. Were you able to find out anything about why Bladenmore is operating in those countries? I mean, I'm sure businesses there want sleek corporate videos like anywhere else, but it's a weirdly specific crossover for a company based in the UK/US to be doing, especially in such a notoriously corrupt part of the world. (Edit: Plus, I spent some time on the English side of the site, trying to figure out what Bladenmore actually DOES, and I'm still not sure. It's so broad and vague I'm totally confused as to how anyone could decide they want or need these services...)
Regardless, super interesting video! The internet is such a weird place...
