Building the 23’ V-Bottom Skiff - Episode 22: Cutting the sheer line

  • Опубликовано: 8 сен 2024
  • We've got our V-Bottom skiff all planked up and now it's time to cut the sheer line! In order to do this I've had to modify my skill saw to cut as deep as possible because we're not only out to cut through the planking but also the tops of the frame heads. Once we establish the angle of the cut, which will basically mirror the angle of the transom where it meets the sides we need to set up a batten the length of the boat to follow with our saw. Then we'll make our cut, remove the excess planking that's been cut off and then also finish off the cuts in the frame heads with a 10-point handsaw. Lastly, we need to lower the transom a bit to match our sheer line, so we'll cut that with our skill saw as well. The top of the transom does have a radius so we really need to tend the saw to make that curve and not drift off the line. Our V-Bottom skiff now has her true final shape, next week we will be attaching the guards outside the planking at the sheer line and then we're onto the breast hook!

My favorite guy on the Internet. I confess that I noticed my body tensed up when he ran that saw along the shear and the transom. It's not the first time Lou has scared the be-Jesus out of me. You remember when he used a saw blade on a grinder without a fence or guide?

I fareeging love you, man. you remind me of my buddy's dad (but with world history) in your ability to talk quickly and efficiently, and explain every detail to the point. It's more like "education from a shipwright", not just tips. also the tool modifications are very clever. I put blue tape on my foot (of the saw) on both sides to keep from scratching but you don't have to worry about that. I also stick a shim or nail in the guard to keep it out of the way, but you just opened my eyes. Of course osha would not approve, but if you're not being paid for the job, you can do what you want! sea you next week!

The shear looks similar to boats designed by William Garden. Our Saturna 33 has a dramatic shear, that I wasn’t sure I was fond of until we sailed her. Like you he knew what he was doing.

For those not read in: that saw that he hacked pieces out of, and swapped the trigger location, looks like an older but top shelf Milwaukee. It was darn high end back in the day, and will outlive us all. To my eye, that saw has all the hallmarks of being owned by a true craftsman who cares way more about his craft than he did about his trick new saw.

That transom cut is why it's called a "circular saw" I reckon - You got rid of the split wedge and parts of the guard to be able to cut that segment of a circle with it .... ;-)
I love those modifications though - got scolded a lot as an apprentice for preparing my machines to do what I wanted 'em to do .....

I had a Millers Falls drop foot saw given to me by my Father in law back in 1978 and it was my first good saw. I later on made it into my table saw with a 30”x 30” piece of 1/4” steel plate. It worked fine on the job site with a 3’ piece of scrap clamped to it and served me well. I learned very early to make what I had work for my benefit because good tools weren’t readily available in my area and the nearest sears store was an hour away, also tools weren’t as developed and brands and choices were few. Can’t wait to see you tillering that big skiff !! Stay safe Lou

I might be the only one feeling this way, but damn I loved the high free-board better - the look she had immediately after the installation of that last permanent side-plank. To me this sheer line, well, butchers an otherwise beautiful blue-water boat. You may call it a skiff all you want but not every wooden vessel has to be built with dragging nets or lobster-traps over the railing in mind.
