I played the Shenmue games on the Dreamcast growing up as a kid, and they just blew my mind. People these days who never played them often look and don't see what the big deal is. But what they fail to realize is at the time, Shenmue was something quite groundbreaking in terms of game development. It was simply way ahead of its time on its game mechanics. No other game before it had ever done such deep exploration where you can literally inspect every item in your view, or interact with nearly every building in the towns. The surroundings were alive, with the AI actually interacting with each other and having a daily routine. Where time and dates was actually something you needed to pay attention to in the game. And with a game that felt so alive, it also had a deep and interesting story that you needed to see to the end. It was a true story of vengeance, but it wanted you to appreciate what was around you. Shenmue truly immersed you in its world. Nowadays people take a lot of what Shenmue has to offer for granted. Sure, today even I can say that the controls haven't aged well. But the core game is something that any true gamer must appreciate. It was simply an overlooked diamond in the rough. When I reached the end of Shenmue 2, it wasn't long after that I was devastated to hear the news about the death of the Dreamcast, and on top of that; the indefinite haitus of the Shenmue franchise. I was 10 years old when I completed Shenmue 2 and I never thought I'd ever see the final chapter to one of my favourite series. 14 years later, and the announcement of Shenmue III was made. I'm not gonna lie, I cried. I cried like a child.
I agree with everything you said...the dreamcast itself was wayyyy ahead of it's time. It's almost 20 years old and a lot of the games can still hold up to current gen!
I know it was groundbreaking at the time but even games today don't have the level of immersion of Shenmue. I like how the worlds are much smaller than GTA games yet feel as big because you have to go everywhere on foot with no mini map (you can buy something like them) or waypoints and have to ask for directions if you get lost. There's this part in Shenmue 2 as well where you can enter all these huge buildings with like 20 floors and most them you don't even need to go to. That's the level of detail in these games.
Man I was 10 years old back in 1999 when I had my Sega Dreamcast. This was one of my favorite games back then. Shenmue was so ahead of its time in storytelling, QTE, having a freaking job on a game, every character you talked to had voices on the streets, houses, jobs. The fighting was like Vertual Fighter, plus you had to train to get better and learn new moves. This game had the best soundtrack for a game, the best supporting characters off Shenmue 1and 2. I can go on and on. Finally, I can end the last chapter of Shenmue after 14 years. Kid today have no ideal what a classic Shenmue was maybe in this remake they will.
MR.DC COMICS Ren of Heavens. Possibly the best supporting character of any game I've played. When I was younger I thought he was a coolest person not alive.
MR.DC COMICS Kids today also have no patience. This game requires a LOT of patience. Remember the forklift driving before work every morning? GEEZ. That took a lot of time. What about the job with the carrying of the crates with another worker. That was a lot of time. What about running from one side of the map to the other side of the map with those stops in between to tell you what neighborhood you're in and what time it is. That's time consuming. The fights were good but too much QTE in between them and if you mess up once, start from the beginning, that's time consuming. What about crossing planks with QTE, you must think literally within 1 second or you lose and start all over again, that's time consuming. With Shenmue 1 and 2 you needed to have a lot of time and patience. A lot of kids these days don't, and you're 25, an adult, I highly doubt you have a lot of time, even free time.
I didn't know anything about Shenmue until I saw this trailer. I got curious and went back to play the previous games. Now Shenmue 1 is one of my favorite games of all time.

He stated it's not going to happen because its cross platform. I think these guys with their jokes have not played Dragon Age 3, the game itself stank, but they allowed you to choose your past from 1 and 2 on their website first. It could be done in Shenmue 3, but he said it won't be.

Emperor_Exodus Have you finished it??. Personally I loved chapter 13, I know it might be grindy and stuff but it was a good way to progress the story. Ch 13 made me feel like Noctis is too dependent on his powers alone and his friends. I loved that the prince is actually struggling and doing it on his own.
Emperor_Exodus Maybe you might change your mind after finishing the game. Ch 13 is getting a patch, they'll add new cutscenes( I think) and tweak the gameplay so it's not repetitive.

I was hoping it would have a long storyline, but if you stick to the main quest, you'll complete the game within 2 days, and that disappoints me. I remember playing games like ffx and it was long and elaborate. Ffxv... not so much.

I was only a teenager back when i first played this game. Shenmue 1&2. Back in 2001. Dreamcast is the last game console i ever had. Not a big fan of gaming right now, but my memories about this game is never faded. When i first saw it i was blown away. Yeah.. the graphic and gameplay maybe sucks for today standard, but the story? timeless. It's one of the best. Something you can relate to when you were young and hungry for an adventure. Damn, i think its time to buy game console again..

It truly is amazing how just last week I found my shenmue one copy out of nowhere and now part 3 is announced. It's great to know that the director has been thinking about it a lot as well, it really amazes me how dedicated he is. I hope some how they get the original voice actor for Ryo back. Other than that, this will be incredible, and I wonder how shenmue 3 will revolutionize the gaming world this time. :')

the dialogue really needs to be improved man this isn't the 1990's and early 2000's era anymore (where alot of video games dialogues during those era was so incredibly chessy as hell lol) those eras are already over now we are now at the current and future era where every dialogues in video games are now way more improved and better i really hope that yu suzuki will improve the dialogue of this game by the time its release

Yu suzuki pushed the limits of the sega saturn as what we saw on the saturn version of virtua fighter 2, the same person who pushed the dreamcast to its limits. If you played shenmue 1&2 via vga cable, then you know what im talking about, which means he could possibly push the ps4 to its limits, given the timeframe that the game might be released in 2017. Every hardcore gamer knows that yu suzuki is the shigeru miyamoto of sega before he left sega.

Shenmue was an adventure that takes place in Japan, you play as a young man name Ryo Hazuki, you came home one day and found that your father was beaten to death in front of your face by a Kung Fu master, name Lan Di, through out your adventure, you travel to many parts of Japan and china, tweeting many new characters along the way, some are nice , some are mean, your main goal is avenge your father's death. There are many other elements to the game, you can check for yourself, but the adventure that captures the emotions of a player is where it's at.
***** I wouldn't just go for "it was an open world game". Sure it was and it felt massive. It was(for me at least) an incredible engaging story and characters, the eastern style of the game and to be fair the voice acting was not THAT bad especially compared to that in this trailer... the voice acting in the japanese dub on Shenmue II we got on Dreamcast in Europe is really good. Story is pretty simple. A dude and his henchmen comes to your house and kills your father searching for two mirrors and also talks about a man he(your father) killed. Well after two games that is pretty much still everything we know about the bad guy and his motives! What a cliffhanger! Well you go out on a quest of vengence...when you're not playing Space Harrier in the arcade or driving a forklift at work. Shenmue is THAT fantastic that a chapter where you air out books(no kidding) is exciting!
***** its a drama game, its like a movie but it is about a son seeking revenge of the guy that killed his father, and its all related to chinese horoscope using animal symbols such as the dragon that is used as an artifact called the mirror with dragon engraved to it, the son is holding the phoenix mirror, the killer took the dragon mirror. you can watch the shenmue movie to get a clear analyze.

It's a proof of concept video, it's not indicative of the final product. E3 was coming up and Sony and Yu needed something to show the public. I think Sony knew people wanted this game to happen, but not how many people wanted it, if it was just a very vocal minority and so didn't want to fully back it until reaction was met. I assume the first real trailer will be extremely different in terms of graphics.

You can call me a fan boy all you want. Because when it comes to Shenmue, I guess I basically am. And I'm very happy to see that it got a spotlight at E3 for it's Kickstarter. Nothing against Sony. But Shenmue 3 is possibly the most anticipated game in history. If not, then it's right up there at the top of the list. But I truely don't believe it should be a exclusive. Granted, they never, officially said it was (to my knowledge). But being supported at a Sony press conference kinda says it will be. Shenmue 3 (since it's fan funded) should not be a exclusive to Xbox, Playstation, nor PC. In large part due to it's fans being, mostly non-Playstation users. Thank about it. Shenmue 1 came out on the Dreamcast (Sega). That system went belly up, so Shenmue 2 came out on the Original Xbox (Microsoft). Both compeditors of Playstation (Sony). So it's perfectly reasonable to consider that most Shenmue fans are not in the Playstation or PC market. That said, I'm, in no way, saying Shenmue 3 should be a Xbox One exclusive either. I have zero doubt that current Playstation and PC gamers are veteran Shenmue fans. Because of this, I also have zero doubt that gamers/fans from all systems helped fund this Kickstarter. *WE ALL* should have the chance to play this game. Not just those that could afford a certain console. Personally, I can only afford one console, and I rent with the Xbox One for a number of reasons. But if I could afford it, then I'll get a PS4 and a Gaming PC as well. But I can't. I played the mess out of Shenmue 1&2. And I love both games. They are timeless as is the story and music. And all should be able to experience it, not just those blessed with more money then they really need. No offense intended. I didn't mention the Wii U in my list b/c I'm not yet convinced it'll be able to handle the game. Also because I'm not sure how much longer the Wii U's life cycle will last. Not very long if Nintendo's E3 Press Conference is any indication. But if the Wii U can handle it, then by all means, provide them with the game as well. I don't care about graphics quality. They could release it with the same graphics from 2002 (or 1999), and the game will still be awesome and sell insanely well. Why? Because the graphics weren't what made this game. Nor was the combat. It was the story that made this game so incredibly good and beloved by millions. Well, that plus the real life aspects they added to it (gamer note: I miss my forklift job from the 2nd game. -_- ). Lets face it, the game's combat sucked monkey balls and the quick-time events pulled us out of the story. And the constantly asking about a Sailor's location just got weird. But the wonderful story always pushed/encouraged the gamer to continue on. It was THAT GOOD! Sure, there were moments where the graphics played a important part. But even today, those low-rez scenes are considered breath taking. I easily got long in the month with this post. And I apologize. I lust love this game series so much! And it would greatly upset me to see a system, any system, get full exclusive rights to this game. :(
Sony is leading the console race, since sega is already out of the picture. While xbox is struggling also. Think about it. Why would a game developer invest in a game to be published on a struggling hardware in terms of power and sales? Are you saying that ys net and sega should shoot themselves? And i think, sony is also funding this game in an undisclosed amount and contract. Common sense, sony would not secure the console exclusivity if they did not somewhat investing on that game. This is not the same the exclusivity of yakuza series to sony consoles. Forget about the wii u, as they only got a remaster of the 1st two yakuza titles which are ps2 exclusives in that era and those yakuza titles are japan wii u exclusive. Which makes sense.

That's perfectly fine. What I would have issue with is them (or any machine) having complete exclusive rights to it. The Kickstarter does not state, anywhere, that the game will be a exclusive in any manner. Nor does it indicate such. This leads to investors (mostly fans) to believing it will not be exclusive. Thus they put THEIR money into it's development. Putting the game on both the Xbox and Playstation (and even the PC) will not hurt Yakuza one tiny bit. All it will do is increase it's sales, and fill his pockets. And if the Playstation is not a struggling console (as you make out), then how would putting the game on all systems hurt them? It wouldn't. Nor would it hurt Microsoft. As for the WiiU, they don't just have remakes. And past deals have nothing to do with the current deals. We don't know what deals Yakuza has with any of these companies, until it's made public. For all we know, Shenmue3 might not even end up on the PlayStation. For all we know, Yakuza paid Sony for stage space. Or Sony simply paid Yakuza for first announcement rights. Why would Sony do this? Easy. Because it gets it in many people's heads that it's going to be a Sony exclusive when it might not be. It's called a "Bait And Switch" announcement. Basically lying without actually lying. I think it's important to say that in an, interview with Famitsu magazine, Yu Suzuki states that Sony will only be handling the marketing for Shenmue 3, and that the money earned through the Kickstarter campaign, IS the funding money, so if you haven't yet backed than please do so.

I don't care about the Division or any other Game that was showing on the E3....and I don't care how long it will take to make this Game,or on which platform it will come. Only the News that it WILL come, and that Yu Suzuki will make it, is making a Dream come true for me..... For me this is the best E3 ever......

We have long waited for this one moment, when Shenmue III will announced. I hope so much that Shenmue III will have the same feeling like the time i played Shenmue I and II. I baked the physical copy for PS4 and it is fantastic to pre-ordering a game and to support the developers with the money.
Epic game shenmue helped make me a productive member of society they made fork lift driving so much fun in real. Life I drove one for almost a decade every one needs to experience shenmue ps4, xboxone,wiiu,and PC.especially if its being funded by kick starter.
I want to play Lucky Hit and collect capsule toys, chug soda, and get paid loose money in an envelope for driving a forklift for two hours. "It's about the black car". These games characterized my childhood. I can never see anything about Shenmue 3 without skepticism, though. I hope the Kickstarter can fund this game quickly. 14 years of waiting.... I remember renting this from the video store. The store itself had maybe 15 Dreamcast games tops! And this games was always available to tent unlike most the others. I ended up renting all the other games first and had no choice but to get this or leave with nothing. Who would of thought this would be the game I remember most as a child and to this day its in my top 3 games ever, along with dark souls and Zelda. :)

Shenmue was so ahead of its time in storytelling, QTE, having a freaking job on a game, every character you talked to had voices on the streets, houses, jobs. The fighting was like Vertual Fighter, plus you had to train to get better and learn new moves. This game had the best soundtrack for a game, the best supporting characters off Shenmue 1and 2. I can go on and on. Finally, I can end the last chapter of Shenmue after 14 years. Kid today have no ideal what a classic Shenmue was maybe in this remake they will.

MR.DC COMICS Kids today also have no patience. This game requires a LOT of patience. Remember the forklift driving before work every morning? GEEZ. That took a lot of time. What about the job with the carrying of the crates with another worker. That was a lot of time. What about running from one side of the map to the other side of the map with those stops in between to tell you what neighborhood you're in and what time it is. That's time consuming. The fights were good but too much QTE in between them and if you mess up once, start from the beginning, that's time consuming. What about crossing planks with QTE, you must think literally within 1 second or you lose and start all over again, that's time consuming.
With Shenmue 1 and 2 you needed to have a lot of time and patience. A lot of kids these days don't, and you're 25, an adult, I highly doubt you have a lot of time, even free time.
I didn't know anything about Shenmue until I saw this trailer. I got curious and went back to play the previous games. Now Shenmue 1 is one of my favorite games of all time.

Ch 13 made me feel like Noctis is too dependent on his powers alone and his friends. I loved that the prince is actually struggling and doing it on his own.

I was only a teenager back when i first played this game. Shenmue 1&2. Back in 2001. Dreamcast is the last game console i ever had. Not a big fan of gaming right now, but my memories about this game is never faded. When i first saw it i was blown away. Yeah.. the graphic and gameplay maybe sucks for today standard, but the story? timeless. It's one of the best. Something you can relate to when you were young and hungry for an adventure.

Shenmue 3 has been the game ive always wanted to play and continue for 14 years and there hasn't been a time when I forgot about its amazing story. It truly is amazing how just last week I found my shenmue one copy out of nowhere and now part 3 is announced. It's great to know that the director has been thinking about it a lot as well, it really amazes me how dedicated he is. I hope some how they get the original voice actor for Ryo back. Other than that, this will be incredible, and I wonder how shenmue 3 will revolutionize the gaming world this time. :')

Every hardcore gamer knows that yu suzuki is the shigeru miyamoto of sega before he left sega.

Shenmue was an adventure that takes place in Japan, you play as a young man name Ryo Hazuki, you came home one day and found that your father was beaten to death in front of your face by a Kung Fu master, name Lan Di, through out your adventure, you travel to many parts of Japan and china, tweeting many new characters along the way, some are nice , some are mean, your main goal is avenge your father's death. There are many other elements to the game, you can check for yourself, but the adventure that captures the emotions of a player is where it's at.

It was(for me at least) an incredible engaging story and characters, the eastern style of the game and to be fair the voice acting was not THAT bad especially compared to that in this trailer... the voice acting in the japanese dub on Shenmue II we got on Dreamcast in Europe is really good. Story is pretty simple. A dude and his henchmen comes to your house and kills your father searching for two mirrors and also talks about a man he(your father) killed. Well after two games that is pretty much still everything we know about the bad guy and his motives! What a cliffhanger! Well you go out on a quest of vengence...when you're not playing Space Harrier in the arcade or driving a forklift at work.
Shenmue is THAT fantastic that a chapter where you air out books(no kidding) is exciting!

You can call me a fan boy all you want. Because when it comes to Shenmue, I guess I basically am. And I'm very happy to see that it got a spotlight at E3 for it's Kickstarter.
Nothing against Sony. But Shenmue 3 is possibly the most anticipated game in history. If not, then it's right up there at the top of the list. But I truely don't believe it should be a exclusive. Granted, they never, officially said it was (to my knowledge). But being supported at a Sony press conference kinda says it will be.
Shenmue 3 (since it's fan funded) should not be a exclusive to Xbox, Playstation, nor PC. In large part due to it's fans being, mostly non-Playstation users. Thank about it. Shenmue 1 came out on the Dreamcast (Sega). That system went belly up, so Shenmue 2 came out on the Original Xbox (Microsoft). Both compeditors of Playstation (Sony). So it's perfectly reasonable to consider that most Shenmue fans are not in the Playstation or PC market.
That said, I'm, in no way, saying Shenmue 3 should be a Xbox One exclusive either. I have zero doubt that current Playstation and PC gamers are veteran Shenmue fans. Because of this, I also have zero doubt that gamers/fans from all systems helped fund this Kickstarter. *WE ALL* should have the chance to play this game. Not just those that could afford a certain console.
Personally, I can only afford one console, and I rent with the Xbox One for a number of reasons. But if I could afford it, then I'll get a PS4 and a Gaming PC as well. But I can't. I played the mess out of Shenmue 1&2. And I love both games. They are timeless as is the story and music. And all should be able to experience it, not just those blessed with more money then they really need. No offense intended.
I didn't mention the Wii U in my list b/c I'm not yet convinced it'll be able to handle the game. Also because I'm not sure how much longer the Wii U's life cycle will last. Not very long if Nintendo's E3 Press Conference is any indication. But if the Wii U can handle it, then by all means, provide them with the game as well.
I don't care about graphics quality. They could release it with the same graphics from 2002 (or 1999), and the game will still be awesome and sell insanely well. Why? Because the graphics weren't what made this game. Nor was the combat. It was the story that made this game so incredibly good and beloved by millions. Well, that plus the real life aspects they added to it (gamer note: I miss my forklift job from the 2nd game. -_- ). Lets face it, the game's combat sucked monkey balls and the quick-time events pulled us out of the story. And the constantly asking about a Sailor's location just got weird. But the wonderful story always pushed/encouraged the gamer to continue on. It was THAT GOOD! Sure, there were moments where the graphics played a important part. But even today, those low-rez scenes are considered breath taking.
I easily got long in the month with this post. And I apologize. I lust love this game series so much! And it would greatly upset me to see a system, any system, get full exclusive rights to this game. :(
Sony is leading the console race, since sega is already out of the picture. While xbox is struggling also. Think about it. Why would a game developer invest in a game to be published on a struggling hardware in terms of power and sales? Are you saying that ys net and sega should shoot themselves? And i think, sony is also funding this game in an undisclosed amount and contract. Common sense, sony would not secure the console exclusivity if they did not somewhat investing on that game. This is not the same the exclusivity of yakuza series to sony consoles. Forget about the wii u, as they only got a remaster of the 1st two yakuza titles which are ps2 exclusives in that era and those yakuza titles are japan wii u exclusive. Which makes sense.

Xbox is *VERY FAR* from being a struggling console. Sorry, but even the idea of it being a failing console is absolutely insane. The console is not struggling as you make out it is. The playstation is struggling a LOT more then the Xbox, in a goo number of areas. Most notably in the security aspect.
I have no issue with Sony having a timed exclusive on the game. That's perfectly fine. What I would have issue with is them (or any machine) having complete exclusive rights to it. The Kickstarter does not state, anywhere, that the game will be a exclusive in any manner. Nor does it indicate such. This leads to investors (mostly fans) to believing it will not be exclusive. Thus they put THEIR money into it's development. Putting the game on both the Xbox and Playstation (and even the PC) will not hurt Yakuza one tiny bit. All it will do is increase it's sales, and fill his pockets. And if the Playstation is not a struggling console (as you make out), then how would putting the game on all systems hurt them? It wouldn't. Nor would it hurt Microsoft.
As for the WiiU, they don't just have remakes. And past deals have nothing to do with the current deals. We don't know what deals Yakuza has with any of these companies, until it's made public. For all we know, Shenmue3 might not even end up on the PlayStation. For all we know, Yakuza paid Sony for stage space. Or Sony simply paid Yakuza for first announcement rights. Why would Sony do this? Easy. Because it gets it in many people's heads that it's going to be a Sony exclusive when it might not be. It's called a "Bait And Switch" announcement. Basically lying without actually lying.
So far, I've seen zero reason this game can not be put on all four consoles. (Xbox, PS, PC, Wii)

Why dont you get a copy of shenmue 1&2 if you have a dreamcast and try it. Play it before you say its crap...

Three I also said I'm honestly asking, if it had a good story or if it had good gameplay I could understand but to me it looks like it's still on the dreamcast and it has crappy dialogue
This trailer prolly was quickly made with almost no money thrown into so I can see why it looks pretty crappy. Just wait until they get funded and see.

But I agree with you that this video contains some bad footage and voices are really bad but this isn't gameplay they will make this game a masterpice.
I think it's important to say that in an, interview with Famitsu magazine, Yu Suzuki states that Sony will only be handling the marketing for Shenmue 3, and that the money earned through the Kickstarter campaign, IS the funding money, so if you haven't yet backed than please do so.

A dream is coming true for me. I don't care about the Division or any other Game that was showing on the E3....and I don't care how long it will take to make this Game,or on which platform it will come. Only the News that it WILL come, and that Yu Suzuki will make it, is making a Dream come true for me..... For me this is the best E3 ever......
so awesome that this is getting made. it sure would be cool to play remasters of the first 2 games, especially for those that never got a chance to experience the full story and game (myself included). i only played a chuck of 1 and some of 2

We have long waited for this one moment, when Shenmue III will announced. I hope so much that Shenmue III will have the same feeling like the time i played Shenmue I and II. I baked the physical copy for PS4 and it is fantastic to pre-ordering a game and to support the developers with the money.

Epic game shenmue helped make me a productive member of society they made fork lift driving so much fun in real. Life I drove one for almost a decade every one needs to experience shenmue ps4, xboxone,wiiu,and PC.especially if its being funded by kick starter.

I want to play Lucky Hit and collect capsule toys, chug soda, and get paid loose money in an envelope for driving a forklift for two hours. "It's about the black car". These games characterized my childhood. I can never see anything about Shenmue 3 without skepticism, though. I hope the Kickstarter can fund this game quickly. 14 years of waiting.... I can go on and on about these games. My little brother and I can speak in Shenmue references, especially when we have to team-lift something. "we make a good team!" "We're putting it down!" "....Sure...."
I remember renting this from the video store. The store itself had maybe 15 Dreamcast games tops! And this games was always available to tent unlike most the others. I ended up renting all the other games first and had no choice but to get this or leave with nothing. Who would of thought this would be the game I remember most as a child and to this day its in my top 3 games ever, along with dark souls and Zelda. :)
