Simple Vanilla Buttercream Tutorial

- How to make the perfect Vanilla American Buttercream from scratch! This buttercream is smooth and creamy, and is great for so many things. You can use less heavy cream for a stiff consistency buttercream (for piping flowers) or add more heavy cream for a creamier consistency. See below for the recipe.

Perfect American Buttercream
(Makes approximately 7 cups, and will fill and frost a 6 inch cake)
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup vegetable shortening
1/4-1/2 cup heavy cream (depending on how creamy you like it)
1 tbsp pure vanilla extract
1-2 tbsp lemon juice (optional)
2 lbs. powdered sugar
Gel coloring of choice (optional)
1. Place butter and shortening into the bowl of a stand mixer, and beat on high for 5 minutes (or until pale and increased in volume).
2. Turn mixer to a low setting. Add heavy cream, and vanilla. Begin adding powdered sugar- 1 cup at a time, until all has been added. Lemon juice can be added to reduce sweetness if desired.
3. Beat at a medium speed until buttercream is smooth and creamy. Gel color can be added at this point.
Buttercream can be stored for up to 2 weeks in the refrigerator. Хобби

@@reginalaborin3I just made it it turned out pretty well! I used a hand mixer though. However I noticed it changes my food coloring colors I usually use . Like my rose pink icing now looks like a grayish pick smhhh
can you use water with his recipe? Also, will the acidity content after the buttercream giving it white spots once settled after the color is added?

Hi I was wondering to make your vanilla buttercream frosting I would need more than just 7 cups I'm baking 2-10' round cakes for a cake I need approximately atlest 10 cups in total I would have to double the ingredients correct even adding another 2lbs of Powder sugar
My icing came out a little stiffer than i used to working if i add more heavy cream will that help and can you use less powered suga

Hi! It does effect the texture, but milk or buttercream also works in place of heavy cream ❤️

Is there a reason you do half butter - half shortening? I have always used full butter but am interested to see what kind of difference this makes.

For your blueberry classic cake, is it this and cake recipe with what coloring? I would not want to ruin ingredients experimenting the blue tones.

Hi Sheri, what can we use for substitute for lemon juice if there is a citrus allergy?
Some people use white vinegar in place of lemon juice. It isn’t crucial to the recipe but does help cut down the sweetness a lot. I would use about 1-3 tsp vinegar as a substitute 💖

Question, what's the best way to mix without this type of mixer? My tools are an egg beaters and whisk.

@@bany6382If purchasing even a handheld mixer is out of the question, it can be done. I seem to recall reading that back before electricity, recipes like this could take 30 minutes or more of hand-mixing. Probably a couple hours to get it anywhere close to an electric mixer.
If we don't have vegetables shortening, what will we use?
Can you add cream cheese frosting to this and it still work well for piping
I have a cream cheese frosting recipe on my website- but basically you would use this same recipe and replace the shortening with cream cheese as well as omit the heavy cream 💖

If I want to dye it with food coloring, which would be the best to use? Liquid or gel? I want to use this to make my daughters birthday this weekend and hope it all works out 😬
I would use gel coloring always as it won’t change the overall consistency of the buttercream. Best of luck with your daughters cake! ❤️❤️

hi I was wondering if I make this Vanilla buttercream frosting I'm trying to make a big patch for 2 - 10' Round cakes and my customers wants it Black Midnight Vanilla Buttercream Frosting what can I do to make this Vanilla Buttercream Frosting but to use the Cocoa Powder instead of a black gel color ??
I do have a tutorial on how to make black buttercream using black cocoa, but it will taste more like Oreos rather than vanilla. Probably the best way to make a vanilla cake colored black would be to frost it with vanilla and airbrush the outside black. Black gel coloring makes it very bitter sadly, and will turn your mouth black if too much is used ❤️
