Lyrics: James and I down by the riverside Watchin’ the catfish pass us by Every Sunday afternoon At the same place, the same time With my good friend, James and I James and I down by the riverside Feelin’ the wind blow as we skip stones Talkin’ ‘bout where we’ll both be And I hope he’ll come with me When I move to the city ‘Cuz I know that’s where I’ll be When I leave Many years have since gone by Me in the city, always busy But if I just close my eyes I can still see the river I can still smell the warm air I can still feel the sunlight and the cool breeze and the tall grass And I see all the trees and the birds around me And I know that I’m home and I won’t be alone ‘Cuz I’m here with my friend James and I
So beautiful. I have watched this video many times, and it always makes me cry. Such a beautiful piece of music, great lyrics, wonderful musicianship, and great to see it performed with such enthusiasm by young people.
Wow, I am pretty sure Pat Metheny would be very impressed with this creation, I would love to see Ms Justine Garcia perform James with the lyrics added with Pat Metheny, that would be an amazing creation to actually hear!!
This is a very novel arrangement. I love the creativity that went into this. This is like taking a great meal and elevating it into something special. Well done.
Very interesting reworking of the classic piece! Beautifully done, and so different from the original but still retaining the essential spirit of joy and optimism that defines the work of Metheny/Mays. By the way, for those who don't know, the original was named "James" as a dedication to their friend and admired fellow musician, James Taylor.
Thank you Ted! I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the dedication when I was researching the song before writing the arrangement. Coincidentally, I had been getting into James Taylor's music at the time.
How wonderful seeing the young people enjoying Metheny's work. Kudos to the guitarist especially. And the vocalist - what a voice! And to the videographer for including the delightful playfulness of these folks. :-)
Wow, what a great version of this magnificent song! Congratulations for the arrangement, for the many creative ideas and for the performance of these talented young musicians. Justine's vocals are the icing on the cake! A huge thank you to everyone for sharing these sublime moments! 👍🎸🎶
This guy's a freaking genius! I ran across his version of James and was so impacted that I did more research on him listening to his other creation.. and this dude is blessed and apparently very humble.. keep it up Allen you got yourself a fan for sure on this side! Love you and your album.. first album right?
Hello! Thanks so much for the kind words. I wrote this arrangement and lyrics as a school project funny enough. This was around the time I was getting more into songwriting, so the lyrics are my own addition to the Metheny/Mays piece. I was very fortunate to have Justine and the rest of the band join me on this.
Wow, OMG, I have never "James" with actual lyrics, did you guys write the lyrics or was it already written and Pat Metheny made a non lyric version or is the Pat Metheny version the original version and you guys remade James with Lyrics?
The song was written for James Taylor by Pat Metheny. Not feeling this arrangement or the lyrix. Good performances by everyone I think. Yeh. Sux. Boring.
Lyrics:
James and I down by the riverside
Watchin’ the catfish pass us by
Every Sunday afternoon
At the same place, the same time
With my good friend, James and I
James and I down by the riverside
Feelin’ the wind blow as we skip stones
Talkin’ ‘bout where we’ll both be
And I hope he’ll come with me
When I move to the city
‘Cuz I know that’s where I’ll be
When I leave
Many years have since gone by
Me in the city, always busy
But if I just close my eyes
I can still see the river
I can still smell the warm air
I can still feel the sunlight and the cool breeze and the tall grass
And I see all the trees and the birds around me
And I know that I’m home and I won’t be alone
‘Cuz I’m here with my friend
James and I

The musical maturity if this bunch of brats is really amazing. I love this video, i regularly come here to rest a bit during my practice sessions.
Sorry, don’t agree with “brats”. Look like wholesome young, highly professional musicians to me. 😊
So many beautiful ideas. It reminds me of one of the last Paul Simon records. So glad to listen to this. Unforgettable surprise.

great arrangement that sometimes is the real key to creative ingenuity, one of my favorite piano teachers in the late 70s was Jim McNeely
Thanks so much 🙂 I got to have a Skype interview with Jim once, such an amazing writer
beautiful and unique arrg. :>)
Outstanding arrangement - you make the intro into an interlude - the lady singer is great. The tune is a tribute to James Taylor.
Really LOVE this video
Thanks so much 😊
How wonderful seeing the young people enjoying Metheny's work. Kudos to the guitarist especially. And the vocalist - what a voice! And to the videographer for including the delightful playfulness of these folks. :-)

Thanks so much!
This is really beautiful Alan! I love it man
also that ending hahaha
😏😏😏
Alan, you have done more than justice to a beautiful composition - what lovely lyrics, as well as an exquisite arrangement. Thank-you.
As a Footnote - I'd have preferred the musicians to have just relaxed - adding the comedy 'dance' routines did not enhance the video.
Just a beautiful rendition. Thank you all.
Thank you!
Bravissimi ragazzi 👏🏽❤

good catch bro
beautiful but sad...it has one of those endings, which people get what they want, but not quite the way they wanted it...still a cool song...
Plexiglass walls before they were popular!
nice one Alan 😎
Can not hear the bass.
Nothing against the singer but would be nice to try someone like Gregory Porter
Nothing against Gregory Porter, but he could never do it like she does it. It was beautiful.
Keep on jazzing in the free world, to borrow some from Neil Young
For sure that piano player lost his spot half way through his solo
No. Hell no.

Sadly, you’re wrong. Your comment sux. Boring.
