  • Welcome to the USS Buttercup, what might be the unluckiest ship in the Navy. She floods to listing at a massive 45-degree angle several times per week... but that's intentional!
She is Officer Training Command Newport's damage control wet trainer; an immersive testing ground for all sorts of emergency flooding prevention techniques. Today, take a dip with NROTC Midshipmen as they test their skills the only way the Navy knows how: hands-on full throttle!
    -----
Sea Trials is a 10-day event, where Midshipmen must perform a series of scenarios and properly demonstrate the skills they have developed throughout their training at the crucible Battle Stations event designed to test Midshipmen performing under pressure as they demonstrate proficiencies in physical fitness, watch standing, seamanship, firefighting, damage control, and swimming.

What’s with the helmets? Regular dungarees when I did this in the 70’s. Good to see they still do this.

I'm not entirely sure why they wear the helmet, but it's probably some liability thing.

If that's Newport R.I. I did the same one at least twice back in the 80s. No helmets in my day. Just what you'd actually have on the ship. Water was usually about 58 degrees.

Did this in the 1980s... However it was in a Damage Control school in Norfolk, VA instead of this location. We didn't wear helmets --who wears helmets at sea? At least we didn't in the 1980s.

good thing they got those rubber boots. wouldn't want your feet to get wet after all.

Getting a concussion from someone swinging a brace beam in the wrong direction doesn't help train your cadet nor keep them in the service.
