      @@DavidKempe3 Thank for your comment. Yes, i've had a pair of them... however, i'm not a fan of wearing neoprene shoes... especially in warm weather. @@barefootstrength I've tried a pair of cheap barefoot woven shoes. Compared to my merrel glove the sole is not so stiff and had more feel and grip. I'm running up to 40k a week and have been using 1 pair for half of my runs since march. For £25 I can't complain about durability but finally seeing some sole wear and peeling at the edges of the sole. The gloves are more sock like but less grip and I won't buy again.

      It's still a niche market unfortunately, but on the bright side, many of the minimalist shoes out there are incredibly durable and last longer than your average shoe. I wouldn't be surprised if prices go down in the future though as interest is clearly growing given the number of new brands popping up in recent times.

    I grew up sharing shoes! Which meant I have to go bare foot some days even to play soccer, and basketball. Barefoot shoes are the only thing people should wear! BUT MATERIALISM AND STYLE REIN SUPREME WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH. To put it simply, All athletes can add at least 5-8 in their sports carriers! I’m almost 52, I run, I ball, been installing flooring for almost 30 years and I’m most likely in better shape then most men half my age. Bare foot shoes or grounding shoes are the most natural thing you can slide your foot in. Most athletes if not all go through the same injuries, bad ankles= thin toe box, bad knees= thin toe box again, hips, Achilles tendon, lower back, You name it brother. None of these companies give hoot about their customers, and the detrimental damage that happens to the hole body for wanting to look good and stylish. How sad! GREAT VIDEO!

I feel much more nimble and light. and its quite enjoyable. I just get this feeling of wellbeing around mile 5 or so. More than the typical runners high. I'm not a runner but barefoot shoes are the best thing one can do for long term health of our feet. There are times that hiking or work boots are just a necessity in a place like Wyoming, but the rest of the time I find it imperative to wear no shoes, minimalist shoes, or barefoot shoes to maintain foot strength. I've always had good strong arches but 10 or 12 years ago I found myself with plantar fasciitis. I was wearing regular shoes too much and paid the price. Our feet have to carry us through the rest of our lives and nature's engineering provided us with the means. Just remember... it's not nice to fool with Mother Nature.

    I totally agree with everything you said in your video. However, I have been wearing minimalist shoes to work (Lems) and I run 3 miles 2x per week in the Saucony Freedom. For a few years. I love both shoes but I just can't get rid of the subtalar/heel pain in the morning. The more I run or am on my feet at work, the worse it gets. I noticed the new soft cushioned shoes I recently bought help a lot and I've also stopped running. I've come to the conclusion that in no time in the history of evolution have we ever walked on hard level cement, hard level flooring , hard level blacktop....let alone run on these surfaces and therefore need some cushion under our feet to make up for this. A little heel to toe drop may be acceptable as well because as the heel cushion wears more under the heel due to the smaller surface area of the heel compared to the forefoot, the foot would likely become more level with the ground as intended by nature. Those are my thoughts based on my experience. I am 47 years old......not old enough yet to not be able to adapt to a minimalist shoe and therefore I am still trying. Your video is so eloquently spoken and clear....I love it. It makes perfect sense, but I am beginning to doubt the practicality in the majority of the population. I get it, the more we brace and protect a body part the weaker it gets, however no time in history did we ever evolve to walk on such hard level surfaces as we do now. I would love a response! Thank you for putting out awesome thought provoking videos!

      You probably haven't corrected your walking/running form. It's absolutely not true that everyone "just knows" how to run/walk correctly. We all need to learn proper form, and if you've been wearing high-heeled highly cushioned shoes since you were a baby, you probably have a lot of bad habits to unlearn.
      In my case, I started having joint pain in my knees while walking during my mid twenties. At that point I had been walking everywhere since I was about 10 years old. Switching to barefoot shoes (FiveFingers) and relearning how to walk without striking my heels down has corrected my knee pain. But I still have to pay attention to my form, especially when I wear more "fashion" barefoot shoes because they usually have thicker soles that still allow for some heel striking and other incorrect movements.

    Nice video. I'm curious about flat feet being weak and flawed, and how to regenerate arches.
    I've been flat footed and mostly barefoot my whole life. I have very strong feet that have no performance, strength or pain issues whatsoever. I've also hiked several thousand kilometres in the past year in barefoot shoes. However my feet remain flat, and no amount of training or barefoot activities seem to change that. I'm convinced that is is genetic and it is not a flaw in my case. I would love to hear your thoughts. Cheers!

    • @gameslayer404
      @gameslayer404 3 года назад +4

      Yeah it's definitely genetic, you can't cure genetic flat footedness through barefoot walking. You obviously can cure non genetic flat footedness (such as from only wearing shoes everywhere) through walking barefoot! You probably already knew that tho!!

    • @BrainFuck10
      @BrainFuck10 3 года назад +2

      It's not a major flaw because the foot has 3 arches, so if your two longitudinal side arches are flat then there's still a third arch that runs transverse across the ball of your feet & toes which provides enough mobility to maintain your performance & health

    • @barefootstrength
      @barefootstrength  3 года назад +4

      Glad you liked the video :)
      With regards to your question, there is no simple answer to it.
      Firstly, one needs to properly identify the degree of arch height present in the feet. While these measurements definitely vary from person to person, due to genetics alone, the expectation is to still be within a range where a distinct arch is present.
      If not, then one needs to evaluate things in other ways too, before jumping to conclusions.
      For example, some people may have excessive fat deposits under the feet, which give the appearance of flat feet.
      Furthermore, those who are habitually barefoot tend to have wider feet, which could also be mistakenly perceived as being flat footed.
      Nevertheless, flat feet can exist in those who are habitual barefoot movers or wear barefoot shoes. This could be due to other factors which could influence arch height, such as hallux valgus (big toe pointing towards the other toes), calf tightness and other factors.
      We will be dedicating some video to flat feet in the near future, where i'll cover things in greater detail... Stay tuned for that ;)

    I happened to come across a website talking about barefoot running back in 2009 and i thought, damnit ill try it. I got a pair of Vibram 5 fingers, got laughed at but could (after months of getting my technique and achilles/calves strong enough) run up to 15km.

    I would say the 5fingers to be the best followed by the new balance. The merrells always feel loose on the foot so you slide around a bit. I had to tie it so tight it hurt to stop this. But every foot is different, you should try them on. But 5Fingers, its a glove, literally and they last. i did around 4000kms on my set of bikilas

      So true. I've been wearing barefoot shoes (Xero HFS) since August and I've been really happy with them. A few days ago, I ran some hard hills sprints without warming up (stupid of me) and injured my right foot. Nothing serious, but the podiatrist is having me wear an elevated immobilizing shoe for 1-2 weeks. In order to not be completely lopsided, I'm having to wear a traditional shoe on my left foot.
      This is no fun at all. Both feet feel worse. My posture feels messed up. My knees don't feel good. Not cool. I'm definitely ready to go back to barefoot!

    Hard to find cheap minimalist shoes. $100+ is the norm. I've experimented with water shoes, etc., but they have very low durability. I can't tell you about these shoes, but I can tell you about barefoot running.
      Once you start walking on your feet everyday, the skin on the foot thickens up within a week. I used to have this fragile cracked foot skin, and it just completely vanished after I walked on asphalt roads for a week, and yes it initially hurts, so I recommend starting very short, and then going out two or three times a day, until you feel comfortable and increase the distance you can walk. I'm still slowly adding up to my barefoot running, using the nicest roads to improve my form, and walking on the rocky roads to help make the skin get even stronger, and going crazy on grass to train my higher speed forms. I did not replace my normal running routine, which I do every other day, because that would obviously result in injuries, and everyone knows that running is the most dangerous sport for getting injuries.
      I can tell you that comfort of running and walking barefoot is incredibly high, and that I do not see any trouble reaching marathon length once you've corrected your form, built up the appropriate muscles, and adapted tougher skin to protect you from the little rocks you find on the road.

I have some old Nike Free Runs, and ASICS DS trainers, both of which I find too cushioned ( they are the least cushioned options I currently have unfortunately, all my others are higher stack heights, or rocker-type midsoles ), so look very forward to trying this whole barefoot vibe! 👊🏻👍🏻

    Humans are meant to run but not on concrete. Therefore I choose to wear cushioned running shoes with 0-4 mm drop to be able to run forefoot and still get the cushion.

    • @barefootstrength
      @barefootstrength  3 года назад +1

      Habitual barefoot runners have shown to incur lower loading rates during the impact phases of running, compared to shod runners. While this seems counterintuitive at first, due to the lack of cushioning in barefoot running, it starts to make sense once one digs deeper into the research. You see, what many people miss is the fact that a well adapted barefoot runner has developed structures and a running style which is designed to absorb and transmit ground reactive forces very efficiently. So, even though they don’t have ‘shock absorbing’ footwear, their in-build structures, once adapted, have been shown to work better at modulating the impact of running.

    • @SimonWoodburyForget

      Flat feet and pronation is caused by atrophy of soft tissues in your foot, and barefoot shoes force these soft tissues to actually work harder, which increasing their strengh and in turn prevents the arch from collapsing further. Supporting the feet is a temporary solution at best, and often makes the condition much worst, which is why so many people these days have flat feet.

    • @SimonWoodburyForget
      @SimonWoodburyForget 3 года назад +2

      Running on pavements is exactly what most barefoot runners are going to do, and it's probably the best surface to train on. Your feets are actually quite amazing, and can absorb the force of the impact perfectly, once you've carefully trained them to do so. Essentially the foot extends and then absorbs the impact by stretching out your toes, and storing all that energy into some tendon and fascia elastic tissues, which releases it to help push you forward.
