Like it does cause her some emotions that she needs to go through, clearly, but she isn't shocked to see strange things happening. It can't just be an oversight, not in a series like this, where even tiny glances and barely mouthed words have a meaning!

If Maggie and Nina's are the immortals from GO1, it could have been Maggie herself, but to disguise her age, she said her grandmother. And that's why she is not surprised or afraid to see the demons invade the shop. I agree with Sendarya, the bad spelling is a clue, perhaps to the fact that Maggie is an immortal and a demon as when she was a nun.

I’ve been wanting to rant about this for so long, and Maggie I saw Maggie in the title and thought it was a good time to talk about it (even it’s irrelevant).
It’s obvious that Maggie and Nina are direct parallels to Aziraphale and Crowley, yet not in the way we would think. Maggie is the soft, angelic appearing one, who looks similar to Aziraphale in her and Nina’s dynamic, and the same for Nina. Yet, their mirrors are actually reversed. Maggie reflects Crowley (which might also be a suggestion to her potential demon identity, you never know), as she is willing to wait for Nina and falls first. Nina at first is in obvious denial, fighting moral good and dealing with a toxic relationship, pushing Maggie away, but she keeps on coming back. Similarly to Aziraphale and Crowley. Nina is in obvious toxic relationship with her partner, just as the same that Aziraphale has a toxic relationship with heaven. (I know this has been established for a while I find it incredibly interesting.) Aziraphale needs more time to think through his actions, as he believes he is not ready for Crowley yet. Just as Nina says she isn’t ready for Maggie, and that she hopes she will be there when she will. Aziraphale doesn’t want things to be rushed, and unfortunately because of how late Crowley was to admitting his feelings, the entire confession sequence lacked him of logical thought and left him confused. We’ve seen this before, Aziraphale expressing that Crowley was “too fast for him”, exactly comparing to Nina saying she isn’t ready for Maggie yet.
This could be showing us how we are easily tricked or mislead, and that characters aren’t what we assumed they are. Just as we never assumed that Aziraphale would leave.
I really hope Maggie and Nina return as their trope is so interesting. Please correct me if I’ve misspoken or there’s anything you want to add ❤

We don't actually know if Crowley couldn't invite Shax into the bookshop. He could certainly have been lying about that, and it's plausible enough that Shax didn't question it.
For me the biggest "what's up with Maggie" moment was when she went to Nina just before the end and convinced her, a small business owner, to drop everything she was doing in the middle of morning rush, to go talk to Crowley right that minute. Why wouldn't Nina say, "OK, give me about an hour?" or "My baristas don't come in for another 30 minutes?" Why would she leave an actual line of customers waiting to go talk to a guy she barely knows about a subject she had literally zero reason to believe was urgent? (Or ugrent).

  • @AlmightyRawks
    @AlmightyRawks Год назад +68

I actually think that Maggie mirrors Crowley slightly more (and Nina mirrors Aziraphale).
Reasoning: Maggie's not overly occupied with her work, it's more about the vibe than the performance of it. She even sleeps in the shop (an activity that is only attributed to Crowley). She's the one who steps forward to protect Nina (and Aziraphale) against the demons. Her clothes are more flattering to her shape, and she wears bright red colors including lipstick, to be seen.
Nina being Aziraphale's mirror is more in her being stuck in abusive relationship that she herself doesn't feel empowerd to leave, instead continuing to be performative in it. She's quite meticulous in her work, and doesn't always seem overly friendly to customers, although can be when it's needed. She dresses more in what she feels embodies her spirit, and her hair and face without make-up have a more timeless quality.
This would make the spelling mistake a hint that Maggie mirrors Crowley, imHo. I absolutely love the way you described her as a driving force throughout S2 and I think it's spot-on.
Granted, Maggie speaks more like Aziraphale (gentle, supportive) and Nina speaks more like Crowley (direct, quick-witted).

Just for fun, let’s play devil’s advocate and look at a sinister side of Maggie. She works in a shop that doesn’t sell records next to a shop that doesn’t sell books. She dresses and speaks as a person of another time. Has she have been keeping an eye on Aziraphale and Crowley since the 1940s when they were misbehaving? Maybe it’s a coordinated effort with Metatron. He left the shop with Azi and she and Nina rushed in to have the talk. Who is she working for?
Maggie did not arrive on time with the others at 6:30 to the meeting/ball. Instead she waited until “nightfall” which was demon meeting time. She left her shop and started swinging her bag for them to follow her. She then made strange faces (a signal?) and they ran after her, only to be stopped by Crowley. Her behavior during and after the attack was questionable, and then she fell asleep on her counter like a demon. Was she there to help Azi or just cause a little trouble?
Thank you to Sendarya for another great video! I always look forward to the next one. It’s fun to find clues and listen to everyone’s theories.

this is very interesting!! although I do want to say that the whole not arriving on time to the ball thing was most likely just her closing up shop, as she clearly shows concern for people stealing records etc. when her and nina get locked in. otherwise, this is a very fun take!!

The berries are cherries, and the flowers are cherry blossoms, very common images in old school tattooing and in Rockabilly tattoos and fashions. Maggie dresses in Rockabilly style throughout the show. Shallows are also an integral design in old school style tattooing. I have loads of tops that feature these designs. In Japanese culture cherry blossoms symbolize both life and death, beauty and violence. As the coming of spring promises new life, so the blooming of cherry blossoms brings a sense of vitality and vibrancy. At the same time, their short lifespan is a reminder that life is fleeting. The shallows are a symbol of good luck, fidelity in marriage, and fertility. My personal feeling is that there is no real significance to the designs on Maggie's clothes, they are pretty tankard Rockabilly designs and fashions.

personally I think Maggie's spelling mistake was meant to be a hint that she is a representation of Crowley and not Azirphale. obviously they're meant to throw the audience off by their visual connections (Maggie = Aziraphale, Nina = Crowley) but I would argue its actually the opposite of what is 'obvious'. Maggie = Crowley because they want the other who is in an abusive relationship, doesn't prioritise the other, can be a little selfish and the pining as well. And I think Aziraphale = Nina which leads into more clues for what could happen in their relationship for season three.

Sorry I’m soooo late to the discussion! I have a thought about the swallows and a 5,000 mile journey (though it might not be a new thought in the community, I’m so far behind!).
What if the journey is actually 5,000 *Years* ?
The comment below this one is looking at the possibility of Maggie actually being God herself, somehow stuck here in human form, and how it explains her lack of communication for so long. To my mind, it could also explain how heaven is so cold and callous- maybe she’s not actually able to (or chooses not to) supervise the angels directly, so it’s all run amok under a Metatron dictatorship? I’m not sure how long ago her last known communication (with Job) was, but maybe 5,000 years is in the ballpark(?).
It would also explain how sometimes she seems parallel to Crowley, sometimes to Aziraphale. They are a yinyang to balance/complete each other, but God herself encompasses all.

You talk about how Maggie is an analogue to Aziraphale, but somebody once mentioned on another comment thread that, although Maggie aligns with Aziraphale and Nina with Crowley for the reasons you and they themselves mention, if you look a little closer, Maggie is more like Crowley in that she's more passionate and open to her emotions, more willing to take risks and communicate what she's feeling. Nina, on the other hand, is more closed off and restrained, unwilling to admit she might feel anything for Maggie because she's caught in an abusive relationship that she hasn't gotten up the strength to leave. I just wanted to share that, I thought it was a super interesting observation!

There's a wonderful book called Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. It follows Jesus (in the book, referred to as Joshua) through his childhood to his death and is told by his friend Biff. A very important character in this book is Mary Magdalene, who they call Maggie. I've always had a little tickle in my brain (but not a fully formed theory) that Maggie could somehow be an incarnation of Mary Magdalene, and next season may be the new Virgin Mary. She says weird things to Nina, like "no judgment" when Nina drinks alcohol, and says that she wasn't "that kind of teenager," almost like she was a teenager in a different time. I dunno, seems like it would fit with the Masons and the toucan, and how it was her "great grandmother" who owned the shop that Aziraphale's "grandfather" rented to her. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it's been Maggie the whole time and Aziraphale never noticed (see the Shadwell arc in season 1).
Anyway, sorry for rambling! Great video as always!

This is an interesting and cool theory. If you read other accounts outside of the Bible, Mary Magdalene is such a huge part of Christ's life. She's more than just a prostitute who became a good friend. Some accounts claim she was one of his most trusted deciples, possibly even his wife. This could give Maggie a direct connection to Christ through a bloodline if you can assume that they produced any children, similar to the narrative of Dan Brown's "The DaVinci Code," in which the last surviving descendent of Christ is the key to everything. Seeing as how the second coming is supposedly going to be a huge event in season 3, it would give Maggie quite a direct connection to how that all goes down, even if she isn't aware of it yet. It would also help connect her to the Masons assuming that she had a family connection to Christ. That seems like it would be a pretty reasonable exception to grant a woman entry into a men's only club.

Your video just sparked a new thought for me. Maybe Beelzebub is the red herring in the bartender's "throw away" line, and it's really Maggie.
The bartender knows her, he buys his records from her and sends her the changed ones. He is also very aware of the Mason symbolism with the temple next door. He would have seen Maggie's jewelry and may have noticed the eye. It would be a clever way to throw in a red herring. We all assume Beelzebub due to the sash, but maybe Gabriel is also meeting Maggie either before or after for other business. We do have a second coming, and Gabriel told the last "virgin" about the big news.
It would allow Neil to keep using these new characters/actresses into season 3. Makes sense to give us some background instead of just throwing new really important side characters at us. Or maybe I've slide into my own tinfoil hat territory finally.

She turns down the offer of an alcoholic drink and when Nina says she must have got drunk as a teenager she just says she 'wasn't that kind of teenager'. Might be nothing but it's another way she mirrors some of the behaviour of typical angels and demons.

Ok so the immediate flower I thought of that has five notched petals like that is White Campion (Silene latifolia) - it's a European wildflower. It does not have sepals quite like that (I think the green things are sepals- botanically speaking, modified leaves that make up the flower's calyx). Instead of separate sepals, White Campion has a fused tubular structure that is kind of inflated. Hard to depict in a two-dimensional graphic. (As a side note- White Campion is a dioecious species- individuals are either stamen-bearing with pollen produced ('males') or stigma-bearing ('females') and produce seeds. White campion is a common wildflower in England and in Elizabethan England were apparently mixed with sugar & wine as a soothing the heart remedy. A quick google search revealed that White Campion is sometimes known as 'Grave Flower' or 'Flower of the Dead' (because often grows in graveyards/around tombstones) ... dunno if any of this makes sense in light of your other analyses as I haven't finished the video yet. Just wanted to respond with a botanical note! (And -- I should say, I'm biased because I studied White Campion as a post-doctoral fellow)

    • @Sendarya
      @Sendarya  Год назад +2

Interesting! It does have a deeply notched petals, but not the sepals. Just a very quick and dirty google brings up a number of sites that all say it "opens the heart to spiritual guidance", and the grave flower is some extra interesting symbolism, but that fits the divinely guided idea. It's a good candidate! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Seraqael. She seems to be in charge of memory. No wonder she recognized Crowley and the Metatron! I'm curious that Seraqael saw Crowley in Heaven, but instead of sounding an alarm or telling him to leave, she told Muriel to show him the trial. What's up with that? Is she going to be an ally for Aziraphale as well? There have also been other instances of angels in Heaven communicating with demons in Hell (Michael with Beel?). Maybe enough for a whole video about it? I also had a thought about characters not recognizing the Metatron - the Metatron is the voice of God, so maybe it was a commentary that people recognize God's speech when it's dramatic, but not so much when dressed up in ordinary clothes. Just a thought. The Metatron is obviously quite sinister, not sure that he actually is the voice of Herself.

The scene on this shirt is a perfect Tarot Sun card image. I'm reminded that the Sun Card also represents Friendship. Also, the number 3 is the number of the The Empress which sometimes is tied in to The Virgin which could lead to Maggie having ties with nuns. Like turn around, you can still choose me and we can be together. Do you think Maggie's spelling mistake is just a distraction? 1. Maggie as Mary: Maggie wears a lot of blue which is the color most associated with the virgin mary. If the second coming comes in the form of a baby, maybe she’ll be motherly in some form of another. Also interesting because the actress’ other character helped ‘deliver’ the antichrist as a nun. No idea if this hypothesis goes anywhere
    2. Maggie as an incarnation of the holy spirit: perhaps this would be an in universe explanation of what youve described in the video. Also if the holy spirit plays into it then it may also support the mary hypothesis (holy spirit made it so mary was born with out original sin or something like that). Once again no idea if this has any basis
The little research i did do made me realize i really dont understand the theology of the second coming like i thought
Edit: if those flowers are lilies or white periwinkles or hell even a columbine that thats more to the mary hypothesis (there are a lot of flowers associated with mary)
Edit 2: oh god someone please analyze maggie for mary symbolism

@@SendaryaHi, sorry if my hypothesis is dumb but seeing everyone focusing so much on Maggie I can’t help but wonder... if Maggie is such a big character like the Holy Spirit or Virgin Mary, would that make Nina possibly be... God Herself ? Ok, with her mind erased by Heaven (Or by herself, or the metatron, or Gabriel, or any other angel) or something like that, but I’m getting the feeling there must be more than that about Nina too (lets say even just for balance ;) ), and if God had her memory ”kind of missing” it would actually make a lot of sense that 1heaven is going nuts, and 2Nina would be actracted by well, everything sacred about Maggie for example... Maybe that’s just me though, that serie is getting me crazy 😂 ! Anyways (and even if I end up being awfully wrong) I wish you all a great day and an amazing week-end 😊 !
Edit : I also imagine Neil Gaiman giving us hints about Maggie just so we won’t figure out anything about Nina... Wouldn’t it be at least very funny 😅 ?

Something curious is Nina and Maggie didn't go crazy when they saw celestials and demons, for them Crowley and Aziraphale are just odd guys. So, or for the humans, the immortals are a common thing, or they have an open mind, or their families were friends of immortals in the Past (like Newt and Anathema, or other humans). But I agree with some theories thta Nina is a demon. However... why Aziraphale or Crowley didn't realise? A hiding miracle? I hope we see Nina and Maggie again, but the human characters didn't come back, so it is possible the actress plays another role. I hope the characters from two first seasons appear, but we will see.

Something I found interesting as well was some of the record placements on the walls in her shop. They're all made up artists ofc, to avoid any copyright and such, but there are 2 that stood out to me. One was the covers for Rat Keith, which appear often on the walls, and the other was an instance where a cover of The Walking Shambles appears behind Aziraphale in the first scene between them, with it being partially covered, leaving "The Walking Sham".
This isn't me theorizing nefarious intentions from Maggie, necessarily, but I thought those were interesting details.
On the note of Nina, I think its interesting how her clothes are the only ones that remained the same when she entered the bookshop for the meeting (along with remaining aware of the difference between her personal feelings and the ones the miracle was trying to provoke). Also, there was a miracle noise when Maggie held out her hand to Nina, gesturing to dance (although that's probably just Aziraphale's blanket miracle thing).

Also...both Maggie and Nina not being fully affected by Aziraphale's miracle during the ball....is something. And...I might be scraping at the bottom here, but...the two of them appear to be much more aware of AziraCrow than they should be. They're giving advice on relationship communication to Crowley, saying 'you never talk!'...but how much do they even know AziraCrow? In episode 1, Nina asks if Crowley also runs a bookshop, so (apparently) not very well.

One of the main symbolic meanings of cherry blossoms is the transience of life and the fleeting nature of beauty.

And when Nina called her "angel", I though could this be ironic? But at the same time, the angels from heaven identify them as "humans." Which got me thinking, why do they measure a miracle and has a miracle ever covered up another being before? Could Maggie's true identity be covered up on purpose by a miracle? I have a theory about Maggie. She's not a demon, she is an angel and the "not being able to spell" is one of the things meant to show us that they're not so different after all. If the Metatro has put him in charge, Aziraphale might choose someone he knew was on his side of things to raise the new 'Christ'. Maybe Maggie ist some kind of supernatural being? Maybe even she herself doesn´t know that? And maybe there never was a great grandmother, because it was Maggie hersellf? And maybe back than she still knew what she was, but then something happened, that made her believe, she was just a regular human being? Or maybe she gave up her status as a higher being willingly and then forgot, what she has been before
And about the adress "Goat Gate". Isn´t the goat a symbol for the devil and also for god?

We saw Maggie Service's nun character die in S1. Could she have died and gone to Hell (because... Satanic Nun) and been sent back just like the Nazis (maybe not as a zombie) in order to accomplish something on behalf of Hell? Or on behalf of Heaven? If we assume some amount of symmetry exists, then maybe both sides have the ability to send dead humans back as agents. Aziraphale wouldn't know her since she's not an angel, and she might appear as human while operating under some higher orders. Whatever her motivation, as you pointed out, her actions seem to help lead to the Metatron getting exactly what he wants.

I kind of figured the misspelling was just because Maggie was crying when she wrote the note. Everything else is spelled correctly. I don't think demons (or angels--we don't know whether non-Scrivener angels are any better at spelling than demons) are incapable of learning how to spell. (Crowley recognizes the misspelling in the note attached to the brick--most demons are not on Earth for such extended periods.) I also know humans are often prone to misspellings and typos even when they know how to spell the words, as their hands try to keep up with their brains.
Humans might be able to invite demons into a bookshop, as a bookshop would be a publicly accessible space to them, although it could be questionable whether that access is transferable by them; it wouldn't apply when the bookshop is closed anyway. It's also questionable whether a tenant would have the right to allow someone into their landlord's space because it had _previously_ been a space rented by an ancestor (I think we know they legally couldn't, at least).
Interesting video. I'm going to have to watch it again.

I think the grammar situation isn't exactly a misleading but a confirmation of something you said before "angels and demons come from the same lot", "they have flaws", we probably tend to think angels would have perfect grammar due to their polished appearances and due to Aziraphale too, but we shouldn't forget Aziraphale is into literature obviously, that doesn't mean the rest of the angels have perfect grammar, just as the demons, and I just wanted to point that we see Crowley struggles with grammar too when he's trying to work out the past tense of smite, but his questioning nature is yet again showed when he asks Aziraphale about it, I think it's interesting because it shows us again that he's different from the rest of the demons.

I am not going to comment on any of the points you already brought up. I 100% agree with those. I had not thought about the Mason thing. I just thought the bartender assumed because he got many Mason Neighbors in That was what Bee And Gab was too. I will just give a few of the observations I can recall on a whim. I have had a strange felling about Maggie since my first viewing. Here goes.
Maggie assumes Nine hates her and blames her for being locked in and breaking Ninas relationship. But at no point do we hear or see that Nina actually does that.
Her mode swings in the Record shops are to fast. She goes from
    normal. Maybe a bit sad.
    To crying.
To talking like a waterfall with no sign of a tear what so ever.
Her "No Judgment" to Nina wanting wine sits wrong with me. Nobody talks like that in RL. Nina also reacts to that.
I am pretty sure this is NOT bad character writing. It could be something hitting the cutting floor that really should not have been cut, But I also don't see Neil accepting that.
No I am pretty sure there IS something going on with Maggie
PS: Oh yes I forgot. Maggie also convince Nina to leave her Cafe, while it is full of costumers waiting in line. People who has already waited for her to open.
Why was it so urgent that it could not wait 30 min? They did not know about the Metatron and Aziraphale being about to leave.
And why did Nina not just tell her to wait?
