austiin norseworthy it’s because the fight is unfair after the equipment is removed. The other player has no way to grab onto the other player and fight
That has nothing to do with the rule, and he didn't take his sweater off on purpose. The reason for the rule is because it had become a standard strategy to attempt to pull the opponents sweater over their head and then proceed to pummel them into near coma while they're both blinded and unable to move their arms. The reason people informally refer to it as the Rob Ray rule is because he was routinely the recipient of such beat downs.
I thought it was the Bob Probert/Joe Kocer/early Darren McCarty "Bruise Brothers" era that ushered in the tie downs. 24, 25, and 26. If you saw a red and white jersey, coming fast, with a 2 on it, you didn't wait to see what the other number might be. Fight or flight, your only two choices.
Rob Ray about the fan he beat up : - I didnt know what he was going to do, so i just hit him 🤷♂️ That guy was a legend, and this is one of my favorite hockey moment.

Or the whole Detroit Red Wing team wanting a piece of "the Turtle" before they let McCarty get to him. Back then, you don't break Kris Draper's jaw, and NOT think it was going to come back and haunt you. Even Osgood took advantage of the situation, because P. Roy got pulled from goal, in an 11-1 blowout by the Wings, then proceeded to trash talk the Wings, by giving them no credit for scoring 11 on him by early in the 3rd period. Roy never played another game for Montreal. That's how he ended up on the Av's, with the Turtle. Loved it when the Wings kept knocking Colorado of their "mile high" horse.
As a kid I remember reading about some weird rules that you should look into (if they’re true): In hockey they introduced a rule requiring the players names to be sewn onto the jerseys along with their numbers. The owner of the maple leafs opposed this because he thought he would sell fewer programs. So he complied with the rule but had the names the same colour as the jersey, so no one could read them. They needed a new rule to prevent that. I also remember reading about a team in football that used a football as their team logo, so runners could pretend they were holding a football after a fake handoff. That needed a rule change too. And another team had purple jerseys and painted the football purple to camaflouge it (the home team supplied the football then) Hope these are true, if they are they would make good episodes
Purple jerseys were the ravens and they camouflaged themselves in the end zone, I don’t remember any team having a football logo though. Maybe the packers? Dunno
Yeah, IDK what's going on, but it's awkward AF. Lol. I get he's gay, picked up on that with the was he was "slithering" Lmao. But there is like some weird flirting/sexual-tension type ish going on between them. Maybe they're both just awkward as hell. Lol.
my favorite part of the clip of Rob Ray fighting the fan is the police officer: he comes sprinting in from off camera, jumps for no reason, runs in place for a few steps like a Looney Tunes character, and then clamps his hand on his head so he doesn't lose his hat. it's a perfect slapstick comedy routine
One of the strategies in old school hockey fights was to pull the other player's jersey over his head to A) make it so he couldn't see and or B) restrict his arm movement so he could not effectively throw punches. Those are the other reasons Rob Ray removed his jersey in or at the beginning of a fight.
Rob Ray was a really good fighter and the rule change didn't affect his overall ability, he did well in most of his fights overall. There were lots of players who altered their jerseys.
Pulling the jersey over a person's head was deliberate. It was a tactic: you would reach behind his head, pull it over his face, then punch his lights out with him helpless. Old jerseys didn't have a tab at the back that attached to the equipment and prevented this, and were very dangerous when this tactic was employed. I was no fan of Ray, but he was taking his own jersey off because it wasn't safe to fight with it on. He was actually being smart. The whole thing was actually a product of an equipment fault that has now been addressed.
Sorry but you are wrong. While correct about the tactic to pull it over opponents head being an advantage, Ray's taking off his own had nothing to do with safety. It was the opposite. He'd take his own off so that the other guy couldn't grab hold of it. Grabbing the jersey allows the grabber to have more balance, allows them to block punches more easily and lessen impact of a blow as you can constantly change the angles of you opponent and keep them in close, and get the opponent more off balance with pushes and jerks. Another big reason some would do it, including rob ray, was because the crowd would get more excited when the equipment would fly and when a guy would be showing his "he-man" muscles, and rob ray was both a showman and a show-off and loved the notoriety.
You don't get any better than Razor... And as a die hard sabres fan, I still get to enjoy watching and listening to him every game!! Rob ray hall of fame
They ignore the simple fact that it is an effective strategy to pull your opponents jersey over their head to control them during the fight. It was a common strategy in fights prior to this rule. Rob Ray and others would do it so their opponent couldn't do that.
Rob Ray kept on loosing fights against the Bruins especially Chris Nilan, Jay Miller and Neely so he had velcro put on his jersey so it would be easier to rip off and he could win a fight .
In more recent years, the owners have complained about jerseys as part of the uniform a lot more. Some owners disagree with tucking the jerseys (no more Bill Guerin types with the half tuck), and pinning the jerseys down became a part of this discussion too.
4:30 Rob Ray wasn't beating up a Buffalo fan. This game was in Quebec and a Nordiques fan came onto the ice and toward the Sabres bench when Rob Ray subdued him. Rob Ray was, and still is, beloved in Buffalo and a fan favourite. He currently provides color-commentary for Sabres broadcasts.
In the 1994 Caribbean Cup qualification match between Barbados and Grenada a really quirky thing happened where Grenada ended up trying to score in either goals, and Barbados had to defend them both to advance.
What about the Sean Avery Rule and the Brodeur rule (trapezoid rule). Brodeur playing the puck behind the net extended his defensemen careers who would otherwise be smashed into the glass.
I really want to know what happened in the NHL and fighting. Like what was the change that caused some coach to be like "if we get rid of enforcers and the grind line we can instead just have good players"
This is two hipsters flirting on a 3rd date and not a sports video. I HAVE NO HATE FOR EITHER INDIVIDUAL, I'm sure they're both wonderful and talented people. Just a lot of awkward/bashful laughter and very little sports talk.
The advantage in part of disrobing in such a fight is that, you're harder to grapple without getting a good lock on the arms or pulling hair or face. If you got a good lock on both arms you've already won a fight especially if you have a second friend to beat the person, so that's a moot point. And few people are willing to pull hair or face in a fight as it's seen as cowardly. Also, disrobing after being grappled, if you can (which is normally not so easy, but he found a way to do it I guess), is a good way to escape at least one grapple if their grip is unwieldy, like in the video shown; he more or less got out of that grapple just by taking his shirt off, and it momentarily confused the guy and let him get some free hits in before the Refs came in to break it up.
The 100% reason it was outlawed because if there is no jersey the one guy has nothing to grab onto. It is definitely an advantage not to have one. You grab the other guy's jersey to get some balance while throwing punches on skates. Without a jersey to hold onto it is much harder.
Rob Ray and Bob Probert both ended up shirtless after many fights. So did Marty McSorley. They changed the rules and Rob Ray in particular has a lot less success. Rob was more a middleweight than a heavyweight anyway and he needed all he could do to not get dominated by some of the bigger stronger heavyweights. Rob fought a lot and so did Probert. When your equipment is on and jersey secured then your opponent will grip you and can really eliminate your chances of throwing punches . It's like wearing a judo gi.so having your shirt and shoulder pads and elbow pads all come off made it much harder for opponent to restrain your punches or control you. So it was a great advantage and lots of fighters were beginning to copy this and it got a bit ridiculous as guys were doctoring their gear to give them the advantage in a fight - forget about hockey. In those days the fans loved it because the fighters would swing away and less grappling...but each fight was like a race to see who became shirtless first and there were pads all over the ice after some fights.
Fun Fact! My dad almost got his ass beat in a bar fight by Rob Ray in ‘97. My dad’s friend was heckling him and he thought it was my dad and got in my dad’s face
When I played football, I quit strapping down my shoulder pads. It wasn't for fighting, but if fighting was a thing, I could have slipped out of them pretty easily. I did it to get more range of motion in my arms. Maybe it wasn't smart, because I did dislocate my shoulder, then threw two interceptions in a row. But, I played for years like that. I can see a hockey player just letting it all be loose.
You all should do the David Leggio knocking over the goal rule. Great story and if you can get the call from the AHL Springfield Falcons it makes it even better.
the real advantage of having your jersey/pads off is that your opponent cant tie you up with them and you're free to swing away while tying them up with their jersey/pads.
As a huge Rob Ray and Sabres fan is there anyway he can send a cease and desist letter for this corrrrrrrny video...this man gave his heart n soul and possibly future health to hockey..this video just is in poor taste
Patrick Roy calling out John Vanbiesbrouck for having red stick tape in the 96 cup finals. Nothing crazy but it was interesting gamesmanship and it's kind of a weird rule for goalies
I would imagine they aren't worried about you getting caught in your own jersey as much as they are worried about the advantage you have in being able to your opponent's jersey over their head to tie them up and beat the hell out of them when they couldn't do the same to you.

The 100% reason it was outlawed because if there is no jersey the one guy has nothing to grab onto. It is definitely an advantage not to have one. You grab the other guy's jersey to get some balance while throwing punches on skates. Without a jersey to hold onto it is much harder.
