It really is an ultra budget model. Thank you for still covering these mainstream TVs now that most reviewers only look at things most people can’t afford. This is the new WhaleOS (built on Linux?) from a Hong Kong software developer called Zesan who just bought one of the major US Linux based TV OS/ad platform developers (Foxxum). Looks like TPV-Philips added a slick skin to it or are still able to build their own settings menus. Whale probably just covers the home launcher and apps. This could be a reaction to new TIVO TV OS which promises more freedom than Android and Fire (for manufacturers) and is coming next year to quite a few brands. Btw, why don’t you look at a Vestel (Turkey) TV, such as one of the European Toshibas?
Hey Interstat2222, always a pleasure to see your comments on my channel! I always learn something new. I would take a look at Vestel TVs, but first I'm focusing on the models many people are interested in. If time permits, at the end of the year I might take one of those TVs and see how they perform.
Many thanks for your detailed review, very clear and precise. It has all the 1st hand user experience data I couldn't find anywhere, and it may have convinced me to get this model (in 50'' screen size, VA not IPS) versus other models in same price range. My case is very specific, as it'll be used with a PC as a 4K@60Hz big screen monitor (for flight sims mostly). I'll also look at your picture adjustment settings, thanks again!
2:11 I had a Philips 58PUS8535 for 13 months I didn't have any such problems. The menus were fast and I never had any crashes or problems that made me power off the TV completely. The main reason I wanted to see a review of this TV is because the PHILIPS TV I had did have a few audio visual problems. When I switched hdmi source I had massive av sync problems. I had to go into the menu and change AV sync from passthrough to a different setting then back to passthrough. That happened with every hdmi input. Even with my Panasonic UB830 which I used a good optical hdmi cable directly into the TV. Also after a few months the TV was showing grey spots on the screen and after 13 months the TV completely gave up outputting an image. I just wanted to know what this TV is like because the 58PYS8535 had a great picture before it gave up on me and all four hdmis had hdmi arc out. I loved the TV despite its flaws.
Hey Steve, your model has Android TV interface which works great on Philips TVs - my comment is mainly going to Philips TVs with their own platforms. As for the AV Sync issues, I haven't seen any on this model. Your definitely had issues from the beginning which got bigger and bigger - I've also heard from several sources how Philips TV quality got worse since TP Vision took over.
@@TVguyDarko I decided to give PHILIPS TV another chance. Despite the bugs I had with the 58PUS8535 it had a very good picture and sound. I've ordered a 50PUS7906 which should arrive next week hopefully. I can't wait to not be using the LG 50UQ670006 that I've been using with 8 months now. What I've been doing with seven months is I have a 4K HDMI switch for my SKY Q Satellite box and Homatics Box R 4K. The switch is connected to a LYTMI FANTASY 2 Ambilight kit and it's going from the LYTMI control box into hdmi in my TV. All just to replicate what I had with the Philips TV I had. I'm hoping I have much better luck with the 50PUS7906. The good news is the retailer I bought it from gives a six year no quibble warranty parts and labour for the TV. So if the TV breaks or is unfixable they will replace it with a TV with similar specs. I won't be using an Ambilight kit and Google TV box to do what the Philips TV will do on its own. I'll miss the bottom Ambilight for a while though. 3:43 from what I've read from multiple sources the 50PUS7906 that I have ordered has a VA panel with a brightness of 255nits. It's only a temporary TV for 12 months when I buy a much better TV. If the 7906 is still good in 13 months I'm going to try to buy a Philips 65" oled
@@TVguyDarko the biggest problem I had with the Philips TV I had was getting that figure 8 power connector into the back of the TV because they have the connector on the back of the TV recessed and pointing downwards in a hole on the TV. Also I didn't like the remote control. The design wasn't nice and I didn't like the diamond shaped d pad on it The one I had , had a keyboard on the back and it used battery's very very fast. I had to change the batteries once a month.
Pozdrav Darko, Meni treba novi televizor ovdje u Holandiji do €500,-. Stavit cu ga u spavacoj sobi i samo cu ga koristit za gledanje filmova, znaci slika treba biti sto bolja i lijepsa sto se moze kupit za te pare. great review my friend. also telling the history and faults and how they fixed these faults. My question though: is this Saphi os or linux?because I see for pus7608 it has saphi os or linux. And which one is best? And which one has many years of updates? Or should I go for the TCL 55C643?it has google tv and qled.
Thanks for watching! I think both Saphi and this New Philips OS are based on Linux. If you are concerned about the updates, definitely get a Google TV such as this TCL model.
3:42 what I find very weird about the LG 50UQ70006 that I'm using for now has a VA panel yet it has absolutely horrible contrast ratio. Blacks look just like 3:51 in it. I can confirm it's not IPS because I have polarised sun glasses and when I look at an ips screen the screen either turns purple or completely black. When I look at a va panel with the sun glasses on it just looks normal but slightly darker. Just like my current TV does.
I bought the Philips 43PUS7608 TV, but I still have the option to return it. I got it for a third less than the original price, meaning I paid 260 euros instead of the initial 400 euros. Do you recommend keeping it? I haven't found a better option with similar specifications.
Hi - that's a good price, but for a bit more you could have a 43" TV with Quantum dot technology, more gaming features and much broader range of apps - check out TCL 43C645 Google TV.
great review, i'm interested in purchasing this tv but i want to ask first, have you encountered any backlight inconsistencies with this tv? im asking this because a while ago i had to return a tv i just bought because as soon as i would change the source or the app, the backlight would go up to 100% which is a huge strain for my eyes especially at night , i've tried to manually set it to the desired level but the outcome was always the same. i've read online that some tvs have this issue because they automatically switvh to hdr mode but i dont know.
Hey, thanks for your comment. No, such issues were not present with the unit I’ve tested. HDR does max out backlight, but you can lower it and it will stay as you adjusted it.
Great review, can I ask that you include the internet browser in your review. A lot of elderly people do not have / don't get on with laptops and tablets, as the screen is too small or the operating system is too complicated. I was looking at this Phillips as I think it has Google Chrome as the browser?
Thanks so much for your comment and for the suggestion. I was just looking at Samsung TV remote and asking myself why did they include web browser shortcut button, but your comment gave me the answer. On this particular TV, some other browser is used, I'm not sure which one as I don't have that TV anymore. But Chrome is not available on any Smart TV, even on Android/Google TV since Google is considering you will browse the web on your phone, tablet or PC. Thanks again, I've just updated my TV testing procedure to include this test.
Hi Gordan - I would go with 65" C845 as it has excellent HDR performance. C805 is also good option if you want to save some euros. If you are after 55" models, then definitely an OLED TV - LG OLED55C21LA is within the budget.
