I had a similar situation in my 29 gal, i had neglected my water changes and let pearweed go crazy and it was blocking flow, but because the back and side glass was so thick with algae, i decided to empty the tank of fish and water and clean everything. One month later and the tank looks great and the plants are growing again.

Hope you get this cleaned up, looks like you have a beautiful layout. I think you need more high flow, the HOB is not enough. I have an eheim surface skimmer and that’ll provide needed flow.
@@drmscaper5878 planted tank is not about filtration or flow. He doesn't have plants that feed on the water column so the flow doesn't matter. The biggest issue with the planted tank is always all about your water chemistry, your lighting/ your fertilizer/your CO2 must balance itself out. if it doesn't, algae will take over. I have a 10G no filter tank that has been running for over 2 yrs with 0 algae growth, however, that tank takes tons of work to maintain with daily/weekly dosing of liquid CO2, trace mineral liquid dosing, and monthly root tabs. Also - Richard nailed the issue right there as well. Lack of plants that would fight algae for excessive nutrients.
@@dingzhuxi I know. Read my comment above, I said ALSO. Filtration is very important, I'm not saying it's the only reason! Planted tank is not about filtration or flow, that's true BUT, without a good filtration, especially biological filtration it's hard to achieve a good ecosystem, it won't work very well, even if it's working, it takes a lot of effort to balancing the system. Excess nutrient can be managed by densely planted from the start or using some floaters. But, how can you break the huge amount of ammonia without good filtration? Not all tank are the same, you should know, it might work for you, but not other. So I simply address the solution for him.
@@drmscaper5878 You keep going back to Ammonia like it is a bad thing to have in your planted tank, and I am not entirely sure why. You DON'T need biological filtration (or a filter) unless you have ammonia producing organisms that produce *excessive* ammonia in your planted tank. Your plants will use ammonia as their N food source, and Beneficial bacterial will naturally form in your water column (very minimal), and substrate - which would be more than enough to break down the excessive ammonia produced by decaying plants/animal (if there is any Ammonia left after your plants' intake). Secondly (and MORE importantly), to highlight and expand on my first point, aquatic plants tends to prefer Ammonia over nitrogen as their N food source (study found here: koiorganisationinternational.org/sites/default/files/Plants%20verses%20Filters.pdf). This is why in any sort of root tab or water column dosing liquid, you will find a higher % of the concentration of Ammonium/Ammonia than nitrate/nitrogen.

This tank has algae cause it’s crazy dirty with barely any plants and right next to the window. The algae will just grow back.

yes it will kill BB, which is why you want your filter to be off for 1-2 hours before turning it back on.
The tank is beautiful with that algae.
It works great but don’t overdose. I added too much and killed everything in the tank except plants.
Look easy but you sure it won't kill my koi in my outdoor pond ?

I added Colloidal Silver to by algae ridden pond, cleared it over night, fish 🐠 and water 💦 plants 🌱 thriving.
Maybe pop in some zeolite or carbon (or both!) And it starves algae but not plants

Your problem here was you did not have enough plants.
also bad filtration, bad flow, for that 12 gallon tank i dont think that small filtration will work....
