The reason we are holding the magazine is because the handguard is made of thin sheet metal. It gets too hot to touch just after 20 rounds. Also the magazine we have does not sit perfectly level in the magwell and causes malfunctions. The StG-44's design is truly a masterpiece even by today's standards. Shame that GSG didn't make another reproduction of this weapon chambered for a more desired intermediate cartridge besides the 22 Long rifle round.

German combat doctrine was built around the tactics of the universal mobile machine gun which minimized the disadvantage of the slow firing kar98. The introduction of the stg44 allowed for different combat doctrine to be introduced and helped in urban fighting, that's about it. For the time it wasn't a giant game changer.
It also should be, according to the weapons manual the RoF is 9 rps, which is 540 rpm. The reason many of them shoot slower today is two fold 1) worn recoil springs and/or 2) underloaded ammunition (to reduce wear on the weapon).

It’s called the gsg STG44 and can run anywhere from 3-7 hundred (depending on your state and where you buy it) and are really fun to shoot and are actually really reliable for a .22. I got one for Christmas and absolutely love it. It’s the closest I’ll ever get or any normal person will get without spending 20k+ for one

this weapon has always looked cool for me, it just looks so futuristic for ww2. Just when i see this bulky weapon i immediately pick it up especially in COD1,2. In COD5 it's a bit underwhelming for me though.
From all the videos I’ve seen of the STG44 being fired in full auto, this video appears to have the fastest cyclic rate. I’ve heard when people fire the STG44 they use a less powerful round so it’s easier on the gun due to it’s age, which results is a slower fire rate. This video the shooters must be using full powered ammo. If this is incorrect please let me know.
