This video explains scientifically, why it is important to breathe from the nose only, especially during this corona/covid-19 pandemic.
Dr. Adhya Kumar Capri tells the exact reason!
Nasal breathing activates the diaphragm, and activation of diaphragm activates the parasympathetic system. Slow and light nasal breathing (diaphragmatic breathing) brings our body into a state of relaxation from the state of stress.
Deeper and slower nasal breathing increases the concentration of nasal nitric oxide in our nasal airways, which helps to increase the oxygenation in our blood cells. This means that higher presence of nasal nitric oxide in our body, increases oxygen levels in our blood cells, which in turn helps to increase the Spo2 levels.
Breathing through the mouth doesn’t help us to take the benefits of nasal nitric oxide, which are important for our lung’s defence mechanisms.
Secondly, breathing through the nose helps to filter out the airborne particles and dust in the air due to the presence of hair and mucus in our nasal passage. This mechanism is not possible if we breathe in from our mouth.
Also, breathing through the mouth allows more volume of air to enter into our lungs compared to nasal breathing.
Higher volume of air intake allows correspondingly higher levels of carbon dioxide to escape from the lungs. Also, its important to know that Carbon dioxide is a natural opener of airways.
Therefore, escape of excessive carbon dioxide is not good for our lungs. Excessive escape of Co2 will lead to narrowing of airways, thereby posing difficulty in breathing. This phenomenon to breathe through nose is all the more important in asthmatic patients.
Therefore, it is very important to breathe through the nose, at all times. It improves the lung function, and lung capacity.
So, even if youre doing deep breathing exercises like lung expansion or thoracic expansion exercises, while you’re suffering from coronavirus infection, try to deep breathe in from nose only.
If you have a tendency to breathe through the mouth, do change it now.
Stay home. Stay safe. Wear a mask. Keep washing your hands regularly. Get yourself vaccinated, whenever you get the chance.
In this fight against corona, we will win and corona will definitely lose.
