But nobody can put their finger on what it was about her. She wasn't even young; she was 40; she wasn't even beautiful. But clearly a woman who attracted three husbands must have had something." That something was rumoured to be a string of sex tricks learned in the brothels of the East, where she spent time with her first husband. The Shanghai Squeeze and Singapore Grip are both probably self-explanatory, but think "matchstick" and "cigar", and men, at least, might start to fathom her hold over Edward.

The Windsors were shady but the British monarchy, politicians and the British media covered for them, the same today with Andrew and Harry, more transparency is needed

I have read this story in many different Biogs of the couple. I have always been fascinated by the Windsors since my mother told me that while their affair and their mediterranean yacht trip was not being revealed by the media back in the late 1930s my mother's next door neighbour who was Canadian came round and said "I don't know if I ought to show you this" and she handed my mum a Canadian magazine with pictures of the two and a whole exposee of the story. In those days few people had telephones and long distance calls were expensive, so it took a while for the extended family to be told the gossip but within a day the whole village knew. As for the robbery, It has to be an inside job, the facts just don't add up. Bringing the jewels on a world-wide privacy tour, and what Sherlock would have called "the curious incident of what the dog in the night" - not to mention the amateurishness of it all. NO, Mr Sean, my verdict is guilty. (It must be something about sometime divorced American duchesses)

I also do the lottery. Someone wins. Good for King George VI. Ex-King Edward VIII was his brother. It certainly demonstrated what a kind man the King was. I heard another story with respect to the so-called "robbery". I read that King Edward VIII had given Wallis Simpson Queen Alexandria's very exquisite set of emeralds, and MI 6 (or 5) "retrieved" those jewels back for the monarchy. Either way, I don't think it was a theft. It was either the Windsors selling those jewels for money or an MI6 (or 5) inside job.

Owning a lot of valuables in your house makes you a soft target for burglaries. My Aunt found this out the hard way, three robberies, the police said if robbers want to get in they will. Security systems have improved since then - but still, living simply seems safer.

Fascinating story, thank you Neil. Many of the stories I have read of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor paint them as less than honourable people, so they did leave themselves open to suspicion and gossip. We'll never know the truth, but if there was some "dodgy work at the crossroads", it doesn't appear to have brought them much joy as they didn't seem to have had a happy existence.

And some people say, that after her mother was invited to have some dinner in royal houses, silver cutlery got legs on it’s own and disappeared 🪄💨 🐾🤣………

I live just up the road from Himley Hall, which was where the 3rd Earl of Dudley, William Ward lived, and was very near to Bobbington airport, a small airfield nearby. When Wallis and Edward were secretly in a relationship, every Friday like clockwork a small plane would bring Edward & Mrs Simpson to Bobbington to rendezvous at Himley Hall. It was the subject of a lot of gossip at the time in Gornal, as no doubt some of the locals were employed at Himley Hall and everyone locally knew of the affair and would hear the plane flying overhead and pronounce “That’s them”. Interestingly, Bobbington airport is where a cousin of our late Queen was killed in a plane crash nearby.
The Earls of Dudley made a huge fortune from the coal that was mined from his estate and later sold Himley Hall to the National Coal Board, where my Uncle manager and I was taken there as a small child. The grounds were designed by Capability Brown. It now belongs to Dudley council. I still go there regularly walking my dog but I often think about the days when Edward & Mrs Simpson went there.
