Having sold our Model 3 in January after only 3 months of ownership because of paint issues we are on the lookout for our next EV. The Born is currently a top contender.

Great test, Kris. Love that you time the actual charging, to be able to make a somewhat useful ranking. 👍 As others have mentioned, I think the MEB 3.x software fixes some of the irritations and makes improvements to both charging speed and consumption.

Hi Kris, thanks for the test. Definitely agree a car like this is good for a trip of this length (I drive a 58kwh ID3). I think you must have driving an early Born with software version 2.3? All Borns in the UK have 3.0, which means you see battery % in the driver's display all the time, and it also gives you % at destination. Same for ID3s sold since spring this year. New cars now are coming with 3.1, which also shows you consumption data in the driver's display.
The software probably also explains the faster charging than ID3. ID3s built with software 2.3 (from summer 2021), or earlier cars upgraded to 2.4, get peak of 134kw in perfect conditions, which is the same as the Born. IDs with earlier software were/are limited to 100kw peak.

The charging time metric is probably the most levelized method to rank cars on the high speed course. Even accounting for wildly extreme traffic and/or weather, range and speed will always be variable factors due to external inputs. Charging time is less subject to big swings. Even a 10% fudge factor for something like 39 minutes of charging time means only +/- 4 minutes. A 10% fudge factor for 6 hours of drive time is over 30 minutes.

Hi Kris, maybe for V3.0 of your test you should also put in how much you had to charge for the hole trip. Background of this point is the fact that the average consumption according to the car is not 100% correct. You already see it in your first leg. You charged to 100% and went down to 4%. This means for 58kWh battery this would be 55,68 kWh and an average consumption of 20 kWh/100km and not the 18.5 kWh/100km which would result in 51.43 kWh lost over 278km. I get your point you only look for time you charge but the overall energy you had to recharge would be of interest too and you should have that data anyway. For DC fast charging around 5% is the normal loss if you don't need battery heating at the charger.

Could probably live with that charge time vs ICE in Norway.... 50kwh chargers and only 1 or 2 at each location makes it a bit more dicey in my country though. So ICE still more practical as we would only stop for a toilet break on a trip that long and wouldn't need fuel either.

I wonder how long the charging time would be with the 77 kWh version... Born could be replacing my E-Golf... But I will wait or search for other VW Group options as long as Born does not offer the great Matrix LEDs...

Same as every 77 kWh MEB car with 3.0 software. Under ideal conditions 29 Minutes 5-80%

The reason you have no % displayed is you don't have the newest software.
