One small correction, the reason the sino-soviet split happened wasn't because Mao and Stalin had different ideas (though they certainly did with Maoism being more peasant orientated and later developing into its own ideology with People's war, the cultural revolution and the mass line) but because of China's negative and antagonistic reaction to the destalinization campaign launched by Kruschev.

Since they spoke about the MiGs in the video, I'm going to give you some weird history facts about why MiGs were so well-known today and how it became the terror of the sky for the USAF and the UN Coalition at that point of time.
Russia had been testing with jets even before the Germans did in the 30s and even earlier than what the British and US did. However, they could never perfect it and then war came which slowed down their processes even more and worse still, all available raw materials are being drafted to items that made more sense rather than jets like tanks and gun production thus the "rocket/jet" project was sent to the extreme back of the planning board. When war ended, everyone practically had a jet, especially the US with their P-80 Shooting Star (Help for those captured German scientist) and the British had their Gloster Meteors.
The Soviets meanwhile also had their 1st jet and that's the MiG-9. However, it wasn't a great plane to fly. It kept suffering from catastrophic engine flameouts during extreme high altitude flights when the cannons were firing and whatever the Soviet Air Ministry did to rectify the problem, it couldn't be done. Besides, the power unit was very weak and poor construction. Frantic to find or design another engine, the Soviets went to one of their old but now-enemy ally, Britain.
Now, after the war, Britain was in ALOT of debt. It owed the US tons of money for the "Land Lease Act" and also its colonies were frantically fighting to keep the Brits away and gaining independence and also, the British were busy repairing their war torn cities that suffered the Blitz so Britain after the war was not in a good shape as they were both physically and mentally broke. When the Soviets went knocking on their doors to see if they could get an engine for their new jets, they went to Rolls Royce. Britain, unlike its US ally, wanted to have a softer ties with the USSR thus they allowed the Soviets to buy some engines from them. The Air Ministry had actually wanted to purchase some Rolls Royce Nene engine (which was the best in the world at that time) and wrote about their desires to Stalin.
Stalin, however, was skeptical as the Nene was a new product that Rolls Royce had and being enemies now, there's no way the British would sell their secrets to the USSR which prompt the now famous line that Stalin said: "What fool will sell us his secrets?". However, Stalin still let a few of MiG's executives to go to the UK and persuade RR to sell them some engines. What Stalin and MiG got back from the deal was way more than they bargained for. Instead of just buying one engine, somehow or should I say, stupidly, Rolls Royce allowed them to get 2 and gave them the blueprints for free. Stalin was actually pretty shocked and astonished at the same time on the financial ruin that the British were suffering from with their internal issues and crumbling empire that they had to short sell everything even to their enemy to be able to get more funds for the rebuild of their nation.
With the new engine, MiG quickly got down to work and with some technical know-hows of swept wing designs from some of the captured German plane designers, especially those that had worked with Willy Messerschmitt in making the legendary ME-262, they made the MiG-15. At that point, the US still din't know that the Soviet had actually beaten them to the jet race and they still happily fielded their underpowered P-80 as their mainstay jet.
However, the US would suffer a huge shock when the MiG-15 suddenly shot up towards the sky and killed everything the UN coalition could toss at them and that prompted the US to bring out the F9F-Panther and also the legendary F-86 Sabre to combat the MiGs. Worse still, it did not help the UN coalition that those flying the MiGs wern't native Koreans nor Chinese (The MiG's are all stationed in China, courteousy of Mao) but in fact, ex-Soviet aces.
With so many kills and how the Soviets were able to make a perfect jet out from a rubbish one in less than a year, MiG became a godlike company that was able to drag a simple design thru 3 generations (MiG-15 > MiG-17 > twin engined MiG-19) and yet still able to drag down any jet it came across.

4:25 did you forget about the Napoleonic Wars? Russia was invaded by Napoleon Bonaparte after taking half of Europe, so Russia had invaded three times, once by France and twice by Germany

  • @MrLolx2u
    @MrLolx2u 4 года назад +1

The Sino-Soviet pact that Mao and Stalin did wasn't so simple and yet again, it could go down to Truman's poor planning on how to end WWII that did it.
While the plan was to drop those bombs in Japan was set on 8th and 9th August, Stalin was preparing his troops, led by Vasilevsky and Malinovsky, back at the corridor of Manchuria to cross that land towards Korea and head into Japan. They were already ready to invade by 6th but due to the agreement they made at Tehran and Potsdam that the Soviets would only invade on the 9th August due to the significance that the Nazis surrendered on 9th of May, they waited. The Soviets already knew about the 1st atomic bomb as it dropped just 2 days prior to the invasion but still, a deal is a deal and off Stalin went, sending his forces straight into Manchuria and Mongolia (Mongolia was their carpet towards Northern China and Mongolia was their ally at that point) but a few hours later, the 2nd bomb went off at Hiroshima on the 9th August too and that caught Stalin and the Kremlin by surprise but they still pressed on.
The Japanese din't totally surrender until the 11th but the Kwangtung Army stationed in Manchuria din't get the memo that Japan had already uncoditionally surrendered to all major sides of the war... Except the Soviets somehow so they kept on fighting till the 20th where the memo made it clear that Japan had already surrendered and with all supplies on the Kwangtung Army's side empty right now with 0 back ups from Japan, they surrendered to the Soviets.
Now this is where things get interesting. Shifting focus to the Chinese Civil War, the KMT and CCP were both at each other's throats even after the Second United Front was formed and it wasn't at all united as at one point both were busy containing Japanese aggression, they're busy fighting each other any way they can thru small scale skirmishes to battalion level battles which was moronic and stupid. But besides the point, the KMT bore the full brunt of the Japanese attack while the CCP contained the northern sector of China with their base at Shanxi. When the war ended, the KMT had swelled to about 4 million men and the puny CCP, which after the Long March where only 15,000 of it's original 70,000+ men survived, suddenly swelled to 1.5 million men after the Japanese surrender.
Back to Manchuria. So, the Japanese surrendered. The Soviets took the lands and all arms the Kwangtung Army had are in Soviet's possession. When the KMT went down and had a talk of taking Manchuria back into the KMT's fold, Kremlin's replies were vague at best but Chiang, Generalisimo of the KMT and defacto leader thought the deal was sealed. However, the Soviets had other plans. You see, to them, Manchuria was sort of the northern parts of China and to them, the CCP did more work in destroying massive Japanese infrastructure in the northern sectors and they need that plot of land and weapons to restructure themselves even more and slyly, the Kremlin needed another big player on their side that could strike fear into the heart of the Western Allies so Stalin instinctively ordered the whole of Manchuria to be ceeded to the CCP and whatever stockpile of Japanese arms the Red Army had are to be transfered to the CCP. This angered the KMT as that plot of land, to them, was supposed to be theirs and also, with their supplies totally wiped out in their fight with the Japanese, the weapons that they had from the deal with the Soviets would supplement whatever arms that they had lost but now, CCP had even more arms to go against them. So obviously, with the rampant corruption the KMT suffers and also with the disdain of the deal that the Soviet and CCP made, Chinese Civil War reopened and this time, as predicted with the sudden influx of arms supplied by the USSR, Mao's CCP won and claimed the whole of China sans Taiwan as a whole Communist victory. That made what Stalin's dream to come true and thus, the alliance was born again.
However, if you read into history, you should know, that alliance never last.

    Interesting thing to bring up...
I went to high school at an US Army base in Germany and got the chance to visit Samsbachshof, I think it's called, where there is perimeter fence dividing East and West Germany.
Cool thing about it was that we were given basically a brief numbers history of the Cold War in Germany, mostly about the sheer amount of attempts of defectors trying to flee East Germany.
And we also did a mock NATO summit, involving a common scenario where Western troops/aid providers were ambushed and we, as NATO, had to develop a measured solution to address it. The biggest takeaway from it was that we had to try and do two things: neutralize the threat without starting a war and that the plan had to be, if not unaminously approved, had to at least be unaminously unopposed.
Talk about 30 American and German students sweating over and discussing wargames and geopolitics... It was a neat experience.

which may be contested, but appears to be the more influential factor in the surrendering. but there were other things, Japanese did not want to see Emperor humiliated at any cost, negotiations had to be very delicate, yes i said it.. Japanese were truly more afraid of Soviet invasion as they easily could flank Manchurian stationed J Imperial Army.

@@vine01 There's a good argument for saying the atomic bomb saved Japan. If the Russians had invaded, Japan may very well have ended up like Korea, with a communist
      North and capitalist South.
