***** It's actually fretted but they do a really good job of making it sound fretless. I know because I have a ludicrously expensive pair of headphones and I can hear the fret noise in the background a little bit. Regardless, the bass on that album is incredible.
***** Audio-Technica ATH-M30s. They were a christmas present. They don't really have too much volume to them which is a bit of a disappointment, but it just means the metal must go up to 11 :)
Yeah, his finger movement is not against the instrument, but parallel to it. It results in a cleaner sound, because it avoids the clank of the strings smashing against the fretboard (like Alex Webster, Steve DiGiorgio, John Myung, Steve Harris...). Many jazz and classical players pick like Forest, but it is not common in metal because the bass can easily disappear in the mix if you don't have the clank giving more attack (not the case here, though).
Saw them live around 2 months ago on the tour with Psycroptic. When they got to the middle of Theatrical Delirium, I literally could not move because my eyes were absolutely glued on Hugo the entire time. He is INCREDIBLE.
I wouldn´t believe that someone actually could keep up with Steve Di Giorgio´s style of playing the fretless metal bass and not looking totally ridiculous while trying. I was soooo wrong!!! I bow down to this huge amount of talent. You Sir earned yourself a spot on my top-ten-bassplayers list! Thank you for this inspiring performance.
Peter Ziegen ...this is the next Digiorgio in modern times ...that bass line from the Vision of Misery and the Individual Thoughs Pattern will never die!
This is the greatest bassist in the world. Augury, Beyond Creation, and now First Fragment? God, there's nothing this machine of a man cannot do. C'est magnifique!
I love how the bassists in tech death bands almost always look like they showed up to the wrong gig, but rolled with it and wind up killing it anyways. This dude looks like he just finished playing at an art gallery, and didn’t have time to change before doing this vid, and honestly I got mad respect for that look.
FKN DEDICATION RIGHT THERE>>>> omg this guy loves what hes doing and you can see that in his face when he plays.. he loves those ruff parts where he lets go the beast inside.. he's a real beast.. really awesome guys, all the band too .. peace, love music
Never really bothered with band because I just assumed it would be like another 0-0-0-0-0 chugging deathcore thingy But this is actually intriguing now Also well done for the wonderful tone and playing
Why did you think it would deathcore? Does the title make you think it's deathcore? Hear their first album, which is fenomenal, by the way, I myself listen to it at least 10 times every week.
I disagree. But before the shitstorm begins - I must say that my Holy Trinity is: God: Steve DiGiorgio Son: Mr. Lapointe Holy Spirit: Jeroen Paul Thesseling Just in case somebody start thinking I do not admire his playing.
I'm gonna be learning bass, any tips? I've played bass before but I haven't played in 2 years and I was never good at it, I'm pawning my old bass and getting a Ibanez gsr206b.
I don't know which tips I should give you,but I would suggest you to start slowly with some simple songs.I was pretty bad in the beginning too,but hey, things take time. Now I'm pretty good at it.
this is insane, now we'll just have to wait for a cover of Earthbound Evolution, the bass track on that one is just ridiculously inventive and sweet to listen to.
oldrigenovy With a fretless bass you can play a note sharp or flat if you don't fret at the exact correct spot. So yes, you can actually be playing out of tune if you're not careful, and you should probably stop making yourself look like a dumbass by dumping on people who know more than you do.
Matt Charwood custom shop in Montréal, probably a small luthier who also did his green fretless 4 and his fretted 6 strings, both guitar players also have custom 8 strings guitar, probably from the same luthier
Some of the expressions of Dominic's face around 2:30 - 3:00 are just priceless... like: "Jesus fucking Christ, that's helluva good shit I'm playing". :D
Anyone knows what pickups that bass has or what model it is so I can try to look it up? I'm building a bass and I'm just in love with that tone and wanted to use those pickups to try and get a similar tone.
MF custom built bass, likely with alder wings, burl maple top, ebony board and maple neck, along with Bartolini on-board electronics. Last time I saw him he played on a 500W Yorkville combo.
Hugo Desrosiers-Plaisance I bet they just DI'd his bass for the album recording though. Pure tone from the instrument then post-production. They might have mic'd an amp as well and mixed it in who knows but most modern bass is all DI.
Jacques Simoneau made the bass for Forest while he worked as a builder for Michel Fournelle. Seymour Duncan Bassline pickups. The wood used for making the bass is likely as you said.
Lock them in a comfortable environment and studio everyone giving their best efforts and the required budget and time needed to pull it off -like one of those weird make a band reality shows curios what would come out of that
Almost makes me wanna drop my guitar and pick up a 6 string bass! I wish more bassists would play like this in metal.
***** not gonna lie, Darude-Sandstorm is pretty good
***** It's actually fretted but they do a really good job of making it sound fretless. I know because I have a ludicrously expensive pair of headphones and I can hear the fret noise in the background a little bit. Regardless, the bass on that album is incredible.

***** I haven't tried. I use a mac so I don't do much PC gaming. I'd imagine they'd be pretty good though, they sound similar to my turtle beaches.
***** Jeff Berlin wouldn't dare to tap, slap or play fretless
his left hand technique is so bizarre but incredible
He might be a classic guitar player as well
yeah his hand position reminds me a lot of classical technique
He's muting the strings while moving up and down.
Gary Willis has a similar picking technique. Clearly jazz-influenced.
Yeah, his finger movement is not against the instrument, but parallel to it. This guy is just a legend, very sad that he left the band but the new bassist, Hugo, is TOTALLY AWESOME too.
Saw them live around 2 months ago on the tour with Psycroptic. When they got to the middle of Theatrical Delirium, I literally could not move because my eyes were absolutely glued on Hugo the entire time. He is INCREDIBLE.
@@dsaillant811 Hugo is a fucken beast!
I saw them with archspire, obscura, and inferi and Hugo was on bass. I was NOT disappointed. Archspire’s bassist is amazing as well.

Extraordinary bassist!
Beautiful. I can never get enough of watching him play! It's sad he left
+Austin Frain He left?? How recently did this happen?
February 18th 2015. His new band Teramobil looks promising though
+Austin Frain Damn that's a bummer... Do you know by any chance what kind of bass that is he's using?
I have no idea sorry
+Sean Fleming It's a custom bass, there is only this, sorry for my bad English.
This is the greatest bassist in the world.
Augury, Beyond Creation, and now First Fragment? God, there's nothing this machine of a man cannot do.
C'est magnifique!
Cof cof Michael LePond (Ex simphony X)¿?, Steve Di Giorgio¿?, Alex Webster¿?, Sean Beasley of Dying Fetus¿?, cof cof
I'd like to see him do something with the guy who used to play for Unexpect. That guy plays a 9-string bass.
@@DiegoBustmanteMGTOW3.0 Ryan Martinie
As a lefty it just feels so much better watching a lefty play.
For me, even I think it looks backwards, but I think that's because I have watched right handed guitarists play my entire life
+Justyn Fogarty Amen to that, fellow lefty. refresing to see such an amazingly talented lefty
+Tristan Bushey I know as a fellow lefty it makes me feel great seeing such a talented player
+Justyn Fogarty between this fella and Nicholas McMaster, the leftys are taking over...... and us rightys are loving this.
Now you know what right handed people feel like a majority of the time
I love how the bassists in tech death bands almost always look like they showed up to the wrong gig, but rolled with it and wind up killing it anyways.
This dude looks like he just finished playing at an art gallery, and didn’t have time to change before doing this vid, and honestly I got mad respect for that look.
We not giving Forest enough credit honestly. This dude revived the bass guitar, which in turn revived a new
dawn of genre.
can we get a full band playthough please? :3
That would be epic!
HELL YES
Just want to say I know for certain a guitar playthrough is coming!
Oli Cathro i wish i could. But they don't come to belgium
Oli Cathro yeah they tour everywhere in australia but nowhere in new-Zeeland.
I fucking love his growling fretless tone.
Mids over scooped bull shit any day
FKN DEDICATION RIGHT THERE>>>> omg this guy loves what hes doing and you can see that in his face when he plays.. he loves those ruff parts where he lets go the beast inside.. he's a real beast.. really awesome guys, all the band too .. peace, love music

But this is actually intriguing now
Also well done for the wonderful tone and playing
Do yourself a favor and check out their first album. It is far from deathcore, very far.
Hell nah man, this band is amazing. I thought the same at first too.
I guess you don't know what Technical Death Metal is
Why the fuck did you assume it would be deatcore?
Why did you think it would deathcore? Does the title make you think it's deathcore? Hear their first album, which is fenomenal, by the way, I myself listen to it at least 10 times every week.
One of my favorite bassist, this video is pure inspiration
Seeing these guys with Ne Obliviscaris on the 21st of November. Can't fucking wait. 2 amazing bands
As a bassist , Lately he is my main influence :3
Okay, i think we can all say for sure that Mr. Lapointe is fucking god.
I disagree. But before the shitstorm begins - I must say that my Holy Trinity is:
God: Steve DiGiorgio
Son: Mr. Lapointe
Holy Spirit: Jeroen Paul Thesseling
Just in case somebody start thinking I do not admire his playing.
odinoczka All fretless :D
Well, dammit, shouldn't be really a surprise, huh? :P
Don't forget Scott plumber! Even though he isn't fretless he is still the Mother Mary of tech death bass
River Harris Scott is maybe the most technical bass player in history.
I love how he's getting so into it, like you can just tell he wants to be head banging while playing. +1
vraiment écoeurant!! lachez pas!!
Gotta love the 70's/80's jazz fusion tone....i love that with the extreme metal bands incorporating this
I don't always buy physical albums, but when I do, it's because the band and especially the bassist are true gods. Keep doing such performances, men.
Why is your music so damn epic!?? Some of the most dizzying yet interesting bass lines i've heard in any metal band. Can't wait for EE!
beautiful
I need that bass, just right handed version.
Tobias TK Gonna be hard considering it's a custom made bass from the Lutherie MF in Montreal
you know you kick ass when you get whiplash from your own bass playing
Man those are some serius bass skills!!....can't wait to hear the entire album!
Just beautiful and epic.. no more words to say
Damn, can't wait for this new album ! Will be awesome !
I wish I could play the fretless like this.I have one with 5 strings, but I rarely play it.I just need frets, and I prefer the sound haha
Sadly not dude,I will keep it.
Check out Thomann.de,it's a great website for instruments.
Damn man.Still, good luck with your bass, rock on! \m/

The technique is unmatched unbelievable the left hand stuff is smooth economic madness
Every track you lay down bass on is gold
There's so much emotion and pain in this song..... easily your best imo.
everything you guys make is absoltuley fenominal but this is one has to be my favorite
I love the tone. But can you heard decently with these earphones?
Well is just a memory process,I mean he created this bass line
arturo de jesus amador sanchez Yes, but he still has to listen to it while playing to make sure he is playing in tune.
Peter-Andre' Pliassov hahahahh you think instruments get out of tune in the middle of songs? And musicians have to tune again while playing?
oldrigenovy With a fretless bass you can play a note sharp or flat if you don't fret at the exact correct spot. So yes, you can actually be playing out of tune if you're not careful, and you should probably stop making yourself look like a dumbass by dumping on people who know more than you do.
NotActuallyBFG got em lmao
What a beautiful piece.
One of my favorite bass players!!!!!! AMAZING
Damn dude, buttery smooth basslines!!
I just came to look at this guy's bass, looked cool and do like his playing \m/
Increible musica. Y gran composición en el bajo!
Incredible! Can't wait for the new album!!! \m/
Those jerky head-movements :D
So AMAZING sounds masterful!
Amazing album and playthrough!
Hey just curious here, anyone happen to know if the sixth string on his bass is a higher one or a lower one? cant quite tell for myself.
Higher. Tuned 1 step down from standard (BEADGC) to ADGCFA#.
right on. thanks very much for the reply!
No problem!
this dude is smart. this is so impossible without lessons, unless your that one guy you know!!
Fantastic!
a nouveau surpris par la magia de ce gars...trop fort!
Dominic and Chancellor are the best!
Amazing! :D.
hes passionate and play like we could immagine Lucifer on the bass , well a great master of this art.
Heavy! Great playing!
So amazing!
This is just awesome!
This is mind blowing!
Same exact head movements I make! Haha! Sick play through!
Beyond Creation is one one of the best things that happened to metal in past few years
all HAIL to forest !!! best bassist ever!
Simply amazing....what kind of bass is that
Matt Charwood custom shop in Montréal, probably a small luthier who also did his green fretless 4 and his fretted 6 strings, both guitar players also have custom 8 strings guitar, probably from the same luthier
Those tapping portions actually melted off a portion of my face.
Have you been to the crossroads?
what bass is that, tone is on point!
Shut up, say something smarter like "The bass tone is fucking perfect" not "on point" who the fuck says that besides shitty fucking trend drones.
If only the timing were right for LaPointe and Chuck Schuldiner to get together for an album or two. Man.
Youre literally my favorite bassist besides old school IF's Peter Iwers and Steve Harris obv of Maiden
This is amazing
His plucking hand is hypnotizing...
Very Nice!
Some of the expressions of Dominic's face around 2:30 - 3:00 are just priceless... like: "Jesus fucking Christ, that's helluva good shit I'm playing". :D
Speechless.
Favorite cover by Dominic so far
Esse baixista, Dominic é muito foda! sou seu fã
Fuck dude, your tone is sick. Your playing is clean as fuck as well. Very nice man.
This just furthers the point that I need a fretless bass. My body is ready for the new album.
Anyone knows what pickups that bass has or what model it is so I can try to look it up? I'm building a bass and I'm just in love with that tone and wanted to use those pickups to try and get a similar tone.
+NowLoading... that's good question. the bass is a custom from MF montreal
+NowLoading... They are actually line 6 pickuos but i don't know which ones
No, they're seymour duncan basslines pickups. looks like they're bartolini sized.
Bumhuggers have very distinct open topped look, but duncan does have a soap-bar line aswell.
bartolini it is not. bartolini uses engra.. embossing? as a title and the color is always solid
Awesome!!
i want a drum play through plz
He looks so happy playing bass :)
Guy's a fucking beast!
Brilliant.
anyone know what ear buds he is using?? would love a pair
Will there be a Guitar Playthrough?
Wow impressive!
Fantastico!!!!!
Simply a legend.
There better be a bass solo on this album. I need my ear candy.
jesus christ... that was amazing
amazing
Does Forest give lessons? I need to learn his right hand technique!
His fretting hand?
stigbeve Shit good point. He's lefty, I'm not. No the other hand.
he is human ?
Etan Jay I dont think so
No because the band is beyond creation XD
he's part of the Earthborn evolution... duh
On the upsode, they just want to provide us with quality entertainment, so I welcome our alien friends
OHhhhh damn, guess what album I'm gonna go buy..
I fucking love this band. Next level shittt
Apart from the fretless instant pitch skill, there is so sweet right (left) hand technique... btw... is it a 35'' scale bass?
This is absolutely awesome! What gear did you use to record this song?
MF custom built bass, likely with alder wings, burl maple top, ebony board and maple neck, along with Bartolini on-board electronics. Last time I saw him he played on a 500W Yorkville combo.
Hugo Desrosiers-Plaisance I bet they just DI'd his bass for the album recording though. Pure tone from the instrument then post-production. They might have mic'd an amp as well and mixed it in who knows but most modern bass is all DI.

He's one of my Impertions on my Top 5 list.
This man/god right here is the most trurnt up bass player!
Amazing.
What´s the average caliber of a 6 string bass?
Perfeito!!!
Anyone know the brand of bass guitar he is using?
DAT BASS!!!
I'd love to hear dominic with nick Barker and if he was alive still the great chuck s from death and luc lemay
Lock them in a comfortable environment and studio everyone giving their best efforts and the required budget and time needed to pull it off -like one of those weird make a band reality shows curios what would come out of that
He should join Electric Wizard
