1999 Volvo WXLL - Labrie Top Select Recycling Truck

  • Throughout the 1990's and into the 2000's, curbside recycling trucks were a common sight in neighborhoods all across America. These trucks were divided into multiple sections, allowing for the separation of different commodities such as glass, plastic, newspaper, and metal cans. As single stream recycling came into play during the 2000's, small recycling bins were replaced with large, wheeled carts and these curbside recycling trucks' place was taken with newer fully automated collection trucks. But luckily for us refuse truck fanatics, a few of these old machines continue to live on, even here and now in 2018!
Though Kennewick adopted single stream recycling a while back, this 1999 Volvo Xpeditor WXLL with a Labrie Top Select recycling body has continued to go out on route, though it is the last of it's kind to do so on a fairly regular basis with the rest of the recycling routes being handled usually with McNeilus side loaders. As luck would have it, I got to catch this truck handling performing its full array of functions, including collection of both curbside recycling and carted commercial recycling, and concluding with some unloading action at the local recycling center! These old recycling trucks are always a lot of fun to see, and I hope you all enjoy my footage!

Also, a huge thanks goes out to this awesome, hard-working driver!

Wish WM still used these types of trucks in my city. It's all automated side loaders now. I also miss that backing alarm.

Excellent video! Glad to see you got more video of these trucks! Dual stream certainly is the best way to get the cleanest, finely sorted recyclable materials. I wouldn't mind sorting again if it meant higher marketability and less contamination. People contaminate their single stream carts way to much, people say the size of the cart is to blame.

She's a real trooper! I'm not sure if I told you, but they have her twin sister now too, 505272. It's like the super last resort spare, though. I don't think they had it when you were there.

Once again, fantastic job! Love the sound of this beast. The tailgate looks almost intimidating, and the cab has it that old rumble to it. Just curious, is Kennewick ever gonna have automated recycle?

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed! She sure does sound good, I've always loved the sound of these mid-to-late '90s Volvo's. As far as automating recycling, it's hard to say what the future holds, but I do know that especially with the current things going on in the world with recycling, they're pretty picky about contamination here, so I think this is probably how things are going to stay for the time being. Every customer inside city limits automatically gets recycling bins now when they start service, before it used to be an optional program and participation rates seem to be at an all-time high. And of course, I can't complain about the truck variety that comes with keeping manual service ;)
