Any amount of wood ash will ignite a cotton fire roll but a 1/4 tsp is ideal. I prove that today with 1/10th of a quarter tsp of wood ashes in 6” of cotton and then with a completely overfilled, ashes covered 6” piece of cotton. Simply put, USUALLY, too little ash makes an easy ignition that lack enduring heat. Too much ash makes a more difficult ignition that produces great and enduring heat. Once again, stick with a 1/4 tsp of ashes for the best of both extremes. Please follow the LINKs below and SUBSCRIBE. Thank You! I remember in those arguably educational How n Why books that it was mentioned you could set alight a sugar cube by smearing it in cigarette ash first . I think professor Julius Sumner Miller might have also done a demonstration way way back. I never tried it or maybe I did , can't remember. Anyway the ashes serve as a catalyst and so the quantity is essentially not critical when a substance is a catalyst .
Now I don’t have to carry matches around anymore! Just cotton, ash, a piece of 2x2 and a metal table and I’m all set! Just being cheeky, I thought it was great!
It's not as far-fetched as it sounds. You're in the wilderness, you lost your lighter, but you know where there are ashes from a previous campfire. You can pick cotton fibers off of your sox until you have enough to make a ball or roll like in the video. You need two flat logs which you can make with your knife, which I hope you weren't dumb enough to go into the woods without, and now you can make fire.
Excellent, only point I would discuss is what surface would be needed ? What rubbing implement ? In a woodland situation most things would be damp or moist?? Unless it's a dry season the my flints work brilliant,, otherwise good idea
why did it happen? How does it happen? I have never seen this before. But I do make white ash; then throw them along a hedge. No cotton. It has never started on fire; but as a precaution I also wet the ash, and let it sit and dry out, before taking it to a weedy hedge.
what else besides using cotton to hold the ash? Maybe old fabric(natural plant fiber) or other dry plant material? Any good fire retardants to put on that fence next to you?
interesting video , thanks . Are you familiar with rolled wood shavings soaked or coated with wax ? very effective . they are about an inch and a half log and varying in diameter .
Very nice ! Question: could you do the fire roll also with synthetic cotton balls, as in a few European countries you can´t easily find real cotton balls anymore ?
No, natural fibers only. They ember instead of melt like synthetics. You can use Jute, Hemp, Yucca, Milkweed, Dogbane, Stinging Nettle... see my fire roll playlist.
Awesome video.! I'm glad you did this one... I was curious about how it would go using different amounts of ash. Great Job, Sir..! Do you suppose that first roll might have worked with dry tinder..? I'd love to see you try making a fire using just that small knife-tip amount of ashes using dry tinder of your choice - or maybe a couple different types of dry tinder..? Just thinking out-loud, here - Lol.
Yes, today's fire roll with the small amount of ashes would have ignited my damp leaves. Usually though, it would not create an ember hot enough or lasting enough to ignite difficult tinder. I already have the type video you're requesting in my fire roll playlist. I used just the amount of ash you could pick up on the end of a toothpick and got it to fire roll ignite.
@@DavidWestBgood2ppl It has to be much more than simply friction. I say this because David has proven that ashed tinder is a great coal extender no matter how the ember is created. Materials made to smolder by use of a magnifying glass, for example, work better when saturated with ash.
David, it just occurred to me, cattails have a fluffy "filler" inside the head. Have you ever heard or experimented with trying to fire roll with one or some of those? If it can be done, that would be a really big survival advantage in areas where they grow, like almost all over the southeast US...
Honestly, everything logical has already been tried. Cattail fluff, dryer lint, Poplar bark (usually), etc are too weak of a fiber to fire roll. See my fire roll playlist.
So, does the ash just provides for additional friction, that gets your strip of cotton (fuel) hot enough to ignite? Obviously the wooden strip provides the inital friction. This looks much easier than a bow drill. And no special tools!
American teaspoons are huge. I would call that a dessert spoon or a soup spoon. What you had on the end of the knife was about half a teaspoon. Regardless, that was a fascinating video and a technique that I had never heard of or seen before, so thanks for that.
That actually looks like a tablespoon and the final quantity was probably closer to 1/8-1/4 teaspoon. But that said, I am intrigued with this as I had never seen this fire starting method.
So close to being the ultimate fire-starting trick ever, but it falls short for two reasons: 1) few survival situations include access to both dried wood ash and a flat surface, and 2) most of our clothing is stuffed with polyester now, so cotton wool is sorta tough to come by out in the netherbush. Interesting stuff, though. Almost greatness!
Wow David...Who knew!? Amazing and useful tip and skill to have. Great Idea and content. Now I have a use for all that cotten I have saved from pill bottles. New subscriber here.
You can't walk off appearing to leave the fire unattended. We are in our fire danger season here in southern hemisphere. Lighting of outdoor fires or permitting them to remain alight is a serious matter.
Oh for crying out loud!!! GET A LIFE! HAVE SOME COMMON SENSE! If you can't differentiate a real scenario and a staged one, go watch cartoons. People like you should stay in a 'safe' room! Go troll someone else with your moral highroad.
Hi Dave... Yep... I have been able / successful using a fire role, drill and bow to create a fire BUT I can't help but feel that these methods would only be deployed if someone completely failed to carry SOME form of more dependable method of fire creation (ie: BIC, Ferro Rod, F&S Set or Fresnel Lens). Most of these can LEGALLY be carried in most "Weapons Restricted" areas! I'm NOT disputing the validity or "Fun Factor" of these other methods but rather the lack of dedication of some people that put themselves "out there" as being self-reliant! Just Sayin... Do Woody's children know that you are using his ashes in your videos? They thought that you intended to sprinkle them around his favorite deer hunting stand! Woody certainly had a fiery personality and often used such inflammatory language that conversations often became quite heated but I'm not sure that he ever imagined you would use him to spark a viral video?
Well, something new. I’ve been teaching our SAR group to work Vaseline or mineral oil into cotton balls, then light it with a fire rod (flint and steel). They burn like little candles for about 10 minutes. I’ll have to try this one, though.

I know many methods of fire starting but not this one. Thank you very much and I will practice this method and pass it on.
TY, see my fire roll playlist.

could roll it between 2 split branches i guess

Loving the scientific measurements
Lol! A Scientific measure of 1tsp of ashes. A redneck method of dividing them into quarters.
Thank you.
Excellent, only point I would discuss is what surface would be needed ? What rubbing implement ? In a woodland situation most things would be damp or moist?? Unless it's a dry season the my flints work brilliant,, otherwise good idea
You have many natural choices, friend. See my fire roll playlist.

Friction, chemical reaction, water leached ashes won't fire roll, see my fire roll playlist. Lol!
Ideal conditions! I am not sure this would work in the bush
Be sure, check out my fire roll playlist.
Been to half a dozen county faires and several dog a pony shows , but ain’t never seen that afor🤔 ! 😂 thanks for the video !
Thanks for dropping by.
Are you new to the internet?
what else besides using cotton to hold the ash? Maybe old fabric(natural plant fiber) or other dry plant material? Any good fire retardants to put on that fence next to you?
Yes, see my fire roll playlist.
Cattails, maybe?
Too weak, see my fire roll playlist.
Thanks im gunna try this on dry brush in la
I feel sorry for their devestation.
Can you wrap the fire roll with less ash in more cotton to make a hot enough ember to light the leaves?
It's the ash in combination with the cotton that makes such a hot ember. See my ashed tinder playlist.
That looks closer to a half-teaspoon (if you were using a measuring spoon), but still impressive regardless 👍 Thanks for sharing!
It was more than what I was saying it was. Check out my current video where I used a real 1 tsp measuring spoon.
@DavidWestBgood2ppl Right on 👍 You still clearly made your point in the video. I can't believe how well that method works. Much appreciated ✌️
interesting video , thanks . Are you familiar with rolled wood shavings soaked or coated with wax ?
very effective . they are about an inch and a half log and varying in diameter .
Yes, TY!
WOW! I am going to have to try that.
I wonder what the chemistry is that makes it happen.
Is it Friction of the ash against the cotton?
Yes, and chemical reaction.
Where did you learn this trick? 👍👍
Boggycreekbeast. He is responsible for reintroducing this technique to the world.
that’s interesting.i trow out a gallon of ash a day?
My strikes anywhere matches and flint and steel kit, have a new pal. Thanks!
LOL! I'm going to start keeping some extra books around also.
Awesome technique .will it work with old blue jeans ?
Yes, a couple of those videos in my fire roll playlist.
Nice. You have to show us what’s in the ash. I’m thinking it’s not ground up matches.
Ash works because of friction and chemical reaction. See my fire roll video.
Good stuff, David! I need to get out there and practice. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for watching!

What does the ash do? Friction?
Yes and chemical reaction... I guess.

dave, does it need to be a metal bottom surface or will wood wood work?
No, see my fire roll playlist

@DavidWestBgood2ppl I guess the fibers don't adhere to each other well enough. Oh, well.
Why does it work?
Is it a chemical reaction?
Yes and friction.
would this work with a strip of flannel shirt or perhaps a cotton sock? i am thinking of survival methods.
Yes, see my fire roll playlist.

Thanks Jon!
Hi David! I know this is a random question, but what color flowers does your Mullein plant produce?
Yellow
I can’t wait for the next video, David West lights a fire with a shadow! 😅 You’re amazing!
The dancing flames, a burning tongue,
Whispering tales, forever young,
The shadows creep, they twist and sway,
As the embers fade, then melt away.
C'mon, S🥀MP.
Very cool! Does anything another other than ash work? Any kind of tinder or other materials?
Yes, see my fire roll playlist.
No idea this was possible. Myself I just pack a dozen or so Bic lighters distributed in all my gear: pockets, packs, bags etc.
I carry one all the time.

Ok, I’m impressed!
