In the 70 and 80's we simply flipped the picture face down while waiting.
You wouldn’t be able to do it fast enough, if the opacifier wasn’t up to the job of blocking out the light, you couldn’t stop it from completely exposing. The split second the film sheet hits the light, after ejecting from the camera, it would already be completely exposed. The Polaroid opacifier on original film was perfect, completely blocked out the light and started to turn clear as soon as the the developer had secured the light sensitivity of the photo (after about 30 seconds) and then it finished maturing and all the colours came through as it was completely developed (around 90 seconds).
The new film, the opacifier is strong enough but sometimes it can separate and steak, as ir spreads, allowing light leaks, this tends to happen as the film gets older 8-12 months after production. Which is why they advise you to shield it but on its own, perfectly spread, the opacifier is strong enough. Polaroid (new) just haven’t quite cracked the timing layer for the opacifier to turn clean, which is why it takes so long (up to 15 minutes) for the photo to finish developing.

I find that the viewfinder works best following the PO instructions. You put the back of the camera against your cheek which leaves your eye well back from the viewfinder. It seems unnatural, but that's the way the One Step viewfinder worked in the past - there was just an empty plastic tube keeping your eye back that far (the optics of the viewfinder were always at the front). PO just omitted the tube, perhaps to make the camera look less clunky. If you put your eye right up against the viewfinder you will usually be looking down through it and the camera will be aimed higher than you expect. You can adjust your aiming to take that into account, but I find that using it in the intended manner works best.

Thanks for the video! I was worried because I had bad experiences on Impossible films on my SX-60 and was looking for this protection. With the new Polaroid films all worked out well but I had the doubt to see if putting this protection would be helpful.

Direct sunlight is a great source of heat, so maybe that made the difference at the end of the video. Maybe the sunny one has just developed a bit faster and had more contrast at this point. I should give this a try with a bright LED lamp instead. But oh well, if you are into perfect photos, don't use instant cameras, guys. I think they are f'ing cool (and did so before that thing that my picture here references)

5 years later: even the 2024 Polaroid Go still has a frog tongue so the problem obviously still hasn't been solved.

My Impossible 660 AF Land Camera, bought 2 weeks ago, has a frog tongue, but the manual that came with it suggests to install one for further protection. When I last loaded film and the black cover got ejected I noticed the tongue covering it but it then retracted by itself, before the cover was fully ejected. I haven't yet seen what it does with the film itself as I'm always keen to grab the pics and slip into my pocket. So, these cameras either have a tongue or don't, right? There's no "frog tongue 2.0"?
Hold up! How are you gonna shoot instax square on rb67? I must know! I've been looking for a good way, saw some ebay options, but they're like $300. Hoping for some DIY resources. Anyway, very interested in how you'll do it.

@@AnalogThings Doesn't the photo chemistry work better when it's warm? Maybe polaroid really nailed the shield.
it has a sweet spot at 21°C and it was a little warm that day but should be the same conditions
That's cool, the frogs tongue stays over the picture with that camera. My Polaroid, the tongue rolls back up when the picture comes out

Yours will have the original Polaroid tongue. Even Polaroid in its heyday needed shielding for a split second . New version is just longer.
Markybug1973 It is because it is ejected so fast, the shield just covered it for half a second to a second for the chemistry to settle after it was spread.
I am so excited for when Polaroid Originals gets their current film down from 5-10 minuets development time, to the 90 seconds development time, that the original film had, that Land Invented. ❤️
Shielding also helps a lot with blue strikes or “blue flames” at the bottom. At least for me.

I think blue flames are a result of protective layer (that protects the negative from light and disappears as picture gets developed) not being distributed in those areas properly, maybe due to improper storage or manufacturing issues. But it only helps if I keep the photo under shield for a long period of time.

Yes! I love that conversion and I think it’s the only affordable way to shoot with these camera! Sadly it’s very hard to find belair backs.
Sorry my bearded friend, but this is not really true: I had some "blue flashes" on some photos and they were caused by bright light after the photo came out. I installed the shield and now it's without any blue flashes - so I really recommend those (too expensive) shields...I don't like them, but they are usful....
I bought my Polaroid One step 2 used. I need help… it doesn’t release the protective film ever. The first 2 pictures always come out overexposed from the top half. How do I add a protective shield? Maybe it’s broken? Thank you

Heather Miles Cao I have one single Polaroid Photo, that is 35 Years old now. It was always in my photo book, so covered from light and it is as bright and contrastful (or is it contrasty? ) as it was on the first day.

Hmm interesting, I just tried it out myself with the color photos by leaving them uncovered, though not in direct sunlight. Some overexposed striped artifacts remained on the pictures after developing. So it seems not all cartridges respond so well to light.
hey john, do you stil know which production date your film was?
I still have one of the two packets that I ordered, assuming they both share the same production date. It says 12/17 at the bottom. The cartridge I took both photo's with has been kept within the camera for about 3 weeks I think at room temperature.

With the difference in the colour, has anyone tried to put the picture under light with a gradient ND filter? Could make for some cool colour contrasts

Hi, just found that channel and I love: I have some questions for you. I have a polaroid 1000 land camera and I'm trying to take pictures with it. I use SX-70 films but I have some problems in exposing right the image. Is there something I have to know or just practice? Cause, you know, films costs so much ahah 😂
Maybe I can help you. From my personal experience and the ones of my friends, we all had the problem with the 1000 Land Camera that it overexposed the pictures. Simple solution for us was to set the exposure control about a half darker, so only one quarter of white is visible. I don't know why, but with my foldable SX-70 I don't have this problem and in both I use SX-70 film. But the 1000 Land Camera is nice for indoor pictures where you need a little bit more light, here it was ok for us to leave the exposure control in it's normal position in the middle.
Don´t know which ISO the 1000 fim was and the problem with the camera can be similar to the SX-70 when you use 600 film, the 600 film is ISO 640 that is more sensible to light than the SX-70 film that is ISO 150, so to use 600 film in SX-70 you need a neutral density filter that is attached over the pack of film, you can try attaching one regular ND filter in front of your camera lens if you have one or maybe can borrow from somebody a ND2 or ND4, this last option is better because can use different ones and decide if you like the results or not.
Ok, thanks for tips :) the 1000 Land with its flash it's awesome, there's just one problem: the original flash has unlimited use. I think I had read somewhere that the SX-70 camera was a little better then the 1000 Land

I remember the Polaroid error when I was a kid.
I normally just pop it to my packet as soon as it comes out and it is usually fine until I went to London. I don't know why my polaroids always turn out purple-ish in London (trying to blame it on its weather LOL)
Do you know how to put frog tongue back into the camera? My camera dropped on the floor, the front piece where the switch is fell off and the frog tongue fell out now i cant figure out how to put it back in
you should just be able to to plug it back in but the frog tongue needs to go between the front part and camera
Why is it that all my frog tongues on 3 cameras jump back in the camera as soon as the film is fully ejected. It only covers the film in the process of ejecting.
I prefer the old shield! The one that used to release automatically when the photo had finished ejecting from the camera! I personally have not had any issues with the polaroid originals film being exposed to light after it ejected from the camera!
Is there a way to clean the film shield? I have the Polaroid Now with finger prints all on it 🥴

Film manufactured on 08/2018 - you still need tongue or you get aftifacts in sunlight. You should add at least annotation on your video.
Hi, I am hesitating about buying this new tongue, because it is costing around 20€ with shipping included... Do you think the new tongue is necessary even if you change the light setting to dark (I have a 660 AF) in sunlight?
the light setting has nothing todo with the shielding of the image. i would atill recommend using the frog tongue for better results, but from my experience the last gen film is fine without shielding

I was hoping to see the difference of the actual frog tongue, as it's there so it's covered for the view seconds where you can not shield it from sun light. So a test with both of them developed in the dark just one with and one without frog tongue would have been nice but oh well
