  • Guided mindfulness meditation for one hour, followed by dharma talk and Q&A.
When we do mindfulness, we are typically doing it from the position of an observer. A person "over here" looking at a body sensation (or other sensory arising) "over there." But there is no need to create this observer persona to "do" the vipassana for us. Rather, awareness is already aware of whatever phenomena we want to observe, and is already in complete contact with it.
So we can just drop out of the "machinery of the mind" -the thoughts and feelings of being a meditator - and allow awareness observe.
Further, we can even use this awareness to investigate the machinery of the mind itself.

If this takes me into the realm of neither perception nor yet non-perception, does that mean that I’m doing it right or that I’m doing it wrong?

Very slightly wrong. But that's still good.

Still too much on the construction side of things? That feels like a weird thing to ask when it comes to that particular jhana (sorry, I know you don’t like to call the formless realms jhanas), but I’m wondering if the slightly wrong turn is the fact that I’m sort of applying a filter to reality when according to the instructions there is no need for one.
