Bike fit is a gateway drug to doing an FTP test.
Bro this is the longest I’ve ever spent learning about sit bones and bike seats in my whole 52 years of life who knew that much technology went into sitting on a bike. Bike life !!!!!!!!!
Haha!! Took you to school today ;)
Agree. Everybody needs a bike fit. And as we collect birthdays and bodies change or after injuries or surgeries, get another fit. A word of caution. Not all bike fitters are the same. Some people that say they are bike fitters have no knowledge of physiology or biomechanics. Or they try to put everybody in a racing position.
Ryan is being fitted by someone who knows what he is doing🌞. Well worth the money.
I've noticed i have to redo it every 1-2 years. Slight differences in our bodies over time make a slight difference in fit.
How do you find a good person to do it? I’m finding neck pain more and more over the years and wondering if I have a bad fit but was just able to ignore it while I was younger.
@@matt6740 From talking to people with successful fits it sounds like the most reliable way to find a good fitter is to find a physical therapist that also does bike fitting. I'm sure there are good fitters that aren't therapists, it just seems that a physical therapist would help ensure good knowledge of physiology and biomechanics.
Amazing video on a topic that is often discounted. Relearning how to ride a bike with glute activation changed how long I can ride on my tours and keeps my knees happy.
I hear you! I’m team glute all the way
Such a great video Ryan, people don't realise how important it is to fit your bike properly and it makes a world of difference👍I got off my couch today for my best ever bike ride in over 50 years of cycling, everything just clicked and I picked the best route ever👌Cycling is such a great sport, for both health and mind👍
Love to hear that you had a perfect day!!!
@@duzer Thank you Ryan😊
I love how Ryan shares his learning. Real interesting stuff that I absolutely knew nothing about. Kudos my man!
Glad this was helpful!
I did this for my 60th birthday 5 years ago. It was a very educational experience and I did it on my Trek 520. The walls were covered with winning jerseys and a lot of high end bikes. Learned a lot and got some funny looks from people coming in. Made minor changes to the bike and it did make a difference Thanks for the video and glad it worked out. Take care, Al.
A good bike fitting is worth every penny!
Knee over pedal spindle (KOPS) method is just a starting point for a good bikefit. There are many many variables that ends up determining your fore-aft.
Thank you for this learning video! I'm so looking forward to better explaining what to look for in bikes, shoes, and saddles as I get people started on new bikes and what they can expect from a professional fit vs. my basic, get started steps.
Glad it was helpful!
Hope the Infinity seat continues to work for you. I have a “library” of seats, Ergon, Selle anatomical among others, but the Infinity (same model as yours) seems great for me for long days in the saddle. I found that saddle tilt is critical. It can be counterintuitive- pressure at the front of the saddle can be relieved by tilting the saddle up! It stops you falling forward on to the nose and actually sits you back into the great pocket that the Infinity provides. Best of luck from NZ 🙂
Anyone who has ever had a sore a$$ after riding NEEDS to try a SQ LABS" 611 active saddle.
Total game changer!
I’ll look that up, thanks!
2nd this, sqlabs saddles I think are the gold standard for actually keeping pressure of your tender bits.
If you're looking for another way to get exercise those days when you don't feel like riding. You can try inline skates. I'm a Colorado native, I just turned 49 and I can still ride seventy miles a day on my mtb, but I just started skating and after 15 miles I'm exhausted! I bought some rollerblade twister xt's and I'm really enjoying another form of exercise besides hiking/walking and my bikes
I can't believe after all these years/miles, you never had a proper fitting done! The difference between guessing and measuring is so important. Happy trails! (already saw this through patreon)
I bet your sit position and tilt it partly related to holding a camera. Take one arm off the bars and it totally changes your position/pressure
That probably explains the uneven wear pattern on the saddle.
I never thought of that but it makes sense
I just had this done 3 weeks ago. I'm 61 and have never been so comfortable on my MTB. I use my bike mostly on hard packed and paved trails and pathways.
It makes a huge difference
I have a pro bike fit on my Trek road bike (my RAGBRAI bike) with a Selle Anatomica saddle. I can ride for hours without any body pains. I will need to do something to my 600x before next month's ride on the Katy trail across Missouri. It really makes a difference if you plan to ride longer rides. No need to get a bike fit and proper saddle if you ride a few miles a week, but for those of us who cross whole states for fun, it's worth it.
Thanks for this!
Soooo many saddles out there!!
Personally I’ve been using the tried and true Brooks B17 saddle…and not long after I broke it in, I no longer needed padded bike shorts (for 10 years now) super comfy, but as the bike fitter indicated, it’s very individualized.
I’d love to not wear bike shorts, maybe someday!
I love the infinity adventure saddle bicycle seat....it's amazing.... and I love the priority 600x adventure bicycle.....
$400+ saddle!!!!
Right on!! Glad to hear it
@duzer ... yes but it's worth it and last a really long time...! Now you have to try the petalling inovations petals.... helps so much and is a big invention in long distance bicycling petals
A proper bike fit so valuable! First, be sure to buy the correct bike and correct bike size for your type of riding and body frame. Many people who find biking uncomfortable may not have the correct bike and correct bike fit for their frame. It's a game changer. Glad you found Ryanignatz -- he's very articulate and knowledgeable.
Hi Ryan,
In my experience, bike fitters tend to focus more on road cyclists and often don't take mountain bikers as seriously. However, I'm pleased to see that this wasn't the case with you.
@@peymannorouzi4165 This is true with local bike shops too! My wife won’t even go into them because they have an attitude if you’re not a hard core road bike person. Only the ebike shops have no attitude and just glad people want to ride.
I was really impressed with my experience.
@@duzer
Then I’m happy for you ✌️
@@duzer I was impressed with him too. Seemed Very knowledgeable and helpful in the video. Wish all fitters were like him. Non judgmental and just want to help make your rides more comfortable.
@@duzerdo you ride drop bar bikes at all? If so in what situations?
Great idea for a video sir. And props to Full Cycle! Remember when they had the smaller shop on the hill? Bought my first carbon frame road bike from them in 1995. A Trek 2120 with a triple crank. Do let us know how the saddle fares. (PS Full Cycle is also a music venue now with a damn good kitchen to go along with the show).
Nice to see the pressure measurement for the sit bones. Wonder why they don’t yet do the same for pressure on the handlebars. Maybe that will come. I remember how anal Lance Armstrong was about dialing in bike fit to the point he could notice millimeters of adjustment change. I was having saddle sores and finally discovered that lowering the saddle 1/4 of an inch made all the difference. It’s still more of an art to a science especially with saddle preference but it (bike fitting) keeps getting better…
Another very high value episode of Duzer! Much gratitude Mr. Ambassador.
Thank you! I’m glad that you enjoyed this
I started with those Specialized body geometry insoles in my road cycling shoes, but then I realized that any other shoes in daily life were less comfortable, so I swapped the insoles in my Hoka running shoes for a set of the same insoles. Now I have these insoles in my road shoes, MTB shoes, running shoes, and even my formal shoes I wear for work.
Good on ya to stay objective! I’m a retul bike fitter and a huge exercise physiology nerd. There is so much value left on the table biomechanically for riders. There is no “right” position but recommended physics. No body is the same or has the same function or same limitations. Most people are not in the right mechanical position but it’s important to zoom out and remember the body moves in more ways than just a cyclist. If someone has compromised mobility and stability with their ankle, there will be complications to everything up the chain and you’ll also only ever be as good as that level of function. It’s not a bike fit position issue, it’s a physical therapy and training issue. The beauty of a bike fit and three closed points of connection is it will highlight any issue like that in the body. Then you can improve the puzzle pieces individually as well as how the whole puzzle works together. A bike fit is super important to make sure you know what you should actually be worrying about!
I can’t thank you enough for chiming in, I appreciate your wisdom on this!!
@@duzer my pleasure and it’s what I love pointing out with my clients in training or with a bike fit. There’s always a reason, stay objective, and be curious!
Ive always wanted to do that 🤔
Pricey ! Thx for sharing
I need this, my whole right side is bigger than my left, I assumed it was because the road slants off to the right...but maybe I need a bike fit...lol
😂😂
Ok gotta watch this after I finish my morning routine. Thanks for all your support!
Damn! I WISH I lived in Boulder 😅. Inspired, though, to get a bike fit closer to home. (Numb fingers and toes).
Great video. I'm a bike fitter and this video is really good.
Thanks! I was impressed with him
I have that phenom saddle with the cutout and also those same insoles. I guess I'm on the right track. Still want to do a full fit though sometime.
Sounds like you’re building a comfortable ride
I use Brooks B67 saddle...it's a wide saddle and feels comfortable to me and no chafing. Bike fitter would probably say too wide. But listen to body too.
Body knows best
Im surprised you never had a pro fit. I thought about that when you had knee issues during your Sweden ride. Ive had several. Certainly for all my bikes and totally worth it.
I’m a slow learner ;)
I'm really glad to hear hat you are having a great experience on the Infinity saddle. I have been contemplating getting one as I always get butt pains on longer touring rides and most of the contemporary saddles I have tried just don't seem to remedy it. I look forward to your long-term review. As you said, it is an expensive saddle, sometimes being a third of the price of the entire bike, but considering how crucial it can be to comfort I think it's an area not to be skimped on.
Yeah, it’s doing the job so far, but we’ll see long term if it holds up on rough terrain (in bad conditions)
Interesting video was interested what you would reflect on from tour divide. This looks good as a possible solution to your saddle sores. Somebody told me once invest in what connects you to the ground. Mianly meant bed sofa etc. However seems to be valid for the saddle. Best wishes for your posterior 😊
Ryan the Bike Fitter knows his stuff.. Bike Fit is a Fantastic Idea.. After riding my bike for 4 years I finally got a bike fit back in spring I was trying to elevate some back discomfort.. we raised the angle of the stem to move my back tilt upward.. It has helped a lot.. So glad I did it.. Great Informative Video 🎥🙂
Glad to hear that you’ve got it dialed in!
Very informative
Thanks
My pleasure
For touring, no chamois has been great for me. Easier for keeping airflow and staying clean. Way easier to dry some ExOfficio or wool underwear than padded ones too. Worth a try.
Got a 2d for at full cycle as a father's day present this year, absolutely changed the game for me!
That’s awesome!
A good place to visit is your local used gear shops or places like pinkbike. You can usually buy saddles people didn't like for fairly cheap. Then try them out and resell if they don't work for you. This is also good advice for grips. Some people will prefer a thicker or thinner grip, and a few sets of used ones can make trail and error a little easier on your wallet.
Good tips!
I am just ordering my fourth stem for my latest mtb build. You would be surprised how much 10 mm really counts. Or 10° degree.
Now that you have your fit. When are you doing your first crit on that fully loaded sweet priority 🤙🏽
I nearly gave up cycling due to saddle pain - then I found the specialized mimic - it is perfect for me and I’ve had no issues since!
Love to hear this!
Luv the Mira tee Duzer !
I wear it everyday ;)
The Specialized biz model has created a large number of trained and equipped fit shops. As with you, they don’t need to sell Specialized gear to get access to savy performance consultation. This year’s Tour Divide took over #1 on my Duzer cringe meter displacing the one day White Rim and the 2021 Great Divide Part 1. Good to see your plans to save a few neural paths with the new seat. Your adventure selections are superior, stay healthy.
Staying healthy is the plan! Cheers
You do sit quite upright on that bike. I think the Infinity will work well because there no load on the ischial tuberosities (sit bones) with that frame design it has. Another YT bike tourer actually uses one without any padded shorts and I think they are designed to be used this way.
After Ragbrai , I’ve been wanting to do this on the 600 X
Thanks for tips, it was quite helpful. Perineal is pronounced like "pair-i-KNEEL", not perennial. Also, my left sit-bones doesn't seem to be adapting to any type of saddle. I can only road ride for an hour before it starts to hurt, so I'm left with mtbing with frequent out-of-the-saddle stints. I can't even sit on a chair unless my left cheek is hanging off the seat. Icing doesn't seem to help..
My guess for the slightly altered saddle, its due to the one handed filming while riding. That struggle is real yo.
Haha, that could be!
Phenom is one of my favorite saddles and I ride it on my mountain bike. Most seats that come on your bike are not that great. I do probably need a bike fit though. I hover between a L and XL bikes.
I'm 14 minutes in and just now realizing how much my foot is shaped like a banana from a certain angle 😂
I definitely need ergonomic grips, a better saddle, and arch support for my shoes.
You've inspired me to ride more and become a healthier person. Much love to you, Ryan ❤
All these things make a big difference!
Hi Ryan .. I used the exact infinity seat you show from Banff to Yellowstone. My sit bones never hurt (not once) however I did get saddle sores. I’ve never had saddle sores before so it was a surprise. I’m wondering if it’s even possible to avoid them when riding so many days. My saddle sores were /are along the line/crease of the butt crease and leg. No hot spots elsewhere.
Great video, very informative!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent content video! This intermixed with adventures is a good choice to help us all learn how to make adventuring more comfortable and healthier for our bodies. I was going to get a bike fit before this year's ragbrai but didn’t want to change right before the long ride from what I had been training with but now wish I would have. I had a couple times where the sit bones got sore and the occasional time where my outer three toes would go numb, but the biggest issue I have now, that I’m still recovering from, is nerve damage in my palms from too much pressure. They are getting better but over a month since the ride I’m not 100% in that area. Your bike fit expert briefly mentioned this at the start of the video so glad to know that I’m not the only person this could affect and that it is fixable with better positioning.
Glad this was helpful! I hope to do more like this
you didn't mention the prostatitis issue, how was it related to the saddle and did the new saddle help with it?
So interesting. OMG - So many different adjustments.
It’s a lot to take in, but very informative
I like the Mira shirt. Thanks for an interesting video on an important topic.
Thanks for watching!
I commented on your last video that I would love to see a bike fit video. Thanks for obliging 😊
Ask and you shall receive ;)
I'm about the same size and age as you, Ryan, and I also developed some major butt problems while riding this year. Not saddle sores, but ischial bursitis and proximal hamstring tendinopathy. Yikes! I think I'm slowly getting better, but I've also had to get a bike fit and reassess my saddle. Thanks for the excellent vid!
Glad to hear that it’s getting better!
The bike saddle is the number one worst part of biking for me. It keeps me from riding more miles. I’ve tried a ton of them too. It’s amazing that the saddle truly hasn’t changed all that much from the late 1800’s. Same for bike design. I need to put a tractor style seat ion mine I think! Lol😂
You might try a chamois if you haven’t yet. It seems silly having padded pants just for riding until you have a pair, then it makes sense.
For me it was finally realizing that my Lesser Trochanters were supporting my weight - not my sit bones. NONE of the saddle makers talk about saddle nose width. However, some saddles have narrower noses than others. You won’t see a dimension published but if you see a pic from the bottom side of the saddle you can eyeball which saddle noses are exactly the width of the rails and which are various widths wider than the rails.
And yes, I was in great pain with “narrow” saddles such as 135-140mm wide seats. But many of these “narrow” saddles still have noses that are wider than the rails. Especially if the saddle is delta shape rather than T shape.
My info won’t solve everyone’s unsolved problem. I only point this out because marketing info, therefore catalog info, therefore “expert” reviews never mention this nose width/Lesser Trochanters issue and probably other issues that I still don’t know about.
Brooks Leather!
@@M14_ToterAK Yup! I heard they are terrible to break in but when you finally do they are great. Funny they originated long ago, probably early 1900’s. So surprising that no one has invented a better saddle in so many years.
I might have just been lucky but my break-in was maybe 3 to 4 months. Even brand new it was not really uncomfortable to me. I ride without chammies or cream. Big money saver there!
The ultimate test of the fit and the Infinity would be the 25' Tour Divide ? 😁
Ooooohhhhh….maybe I’ll have to do that
Ryan, I love my Infinity!!! I don’t ride with a chamois (since 2000). Good luck ❤
That’s awesome! I hope to get to that point
The bike fitter missed a lot on the cockpit, saddle length to stem, stem length and rise, handle bar height and width and handle rotation position.
Other than that not to bad. Time will tell.
I saw a good (and honest) review of the Infinity seat by "Wheels to Wander" YT channel. I may need to check this out further after also suffering from painful saddle sores on a recent bicycle tour..
I’ll have to check that out!
I would have liked to hear his opinion on leather saddles.
Great content
Three minutes in, and I'm already getting Harry Potter in Ollivander's wand shop vibes. "Curiouser and curiouser..." 🤔
The saddle chooses the cyclist! 🪄
You're now fit for optimized bean consumption.
THIS is truly what a bike fit is for 😂
Is it the illusion of the camera lens, or is the nose of your saddle(s) tilted upwards? I always avoid that for more comfort.
I can understand the rationale for using your own bike for a bike fit, but what if it turns out your current bike is a bad fit? Plus, adjustments such as changing the stem length or angle, etc. takes time to do. Better to use an adjustable bike fitting frame - it can be set up to replicate "your" bike, and if major adjustments are needed, at least you'll know what to look for when you replace your current bike.
Hey Ryan Van Duzer come to my hometown Chicago Illinois next year on Sunday September/7/2025 will be bike the drive 2025!!
353 Welch Hill
Looks like the seat is a little high at 18:00.
And Nepal at lukla airport
I would love a bike fit, but bike shops in my area are too busy to offer the service.
That’s a bummer :( Try looking for an independent fitter
Is there a use for saddle's nose?
Bike control while cornering and descending. Also, moving forward to get more power in a tuck position.
This is helpful. I had some saddle sores after my Empire State Trail ride this summer. What about preventative creams or Vaseline? Squirrel Nut Butter? Any advice? I’ve never tried these.
When you will come in India?
what a difference in your ankle movement when using the glutes
I wonder if a saddle like pedals should be excluded from coming with a new bike
That’s an interesting idea
Any ragbrai and/or burning man vids this year?
Yep, stay tuned
I know you were filming (and that may have lengthened the video), but how long, time wise, was your bike fit? Tks
About 2.5 hours
Cool video! My new bike has been a pain in the ass to get dieled In lol. I need to get a fit.
Does anyone know how to keep your seat post from moving up and down. I have used carbon paste and it still does it. I don’t want to over tighten it.
Bummer! I’d use super glue ;) Just kidding, maybe your shop knows the answer
Sqlabs saddles for anyone who’s ever gotten prostatitis riding their bike for days
What r the raisins behind the pedal clips verses regular pedal s
I got 2 bike fittings by the BEST in Minneapolis & St Paul & neither worked. Both bike shops do fittings for semi-pro riders. One shop dropped my seat about 1" & I developed knee pain. I raised it back up & my knee pain went away. After the other fitting I developed arm & shoulder pain from being stretched out on my bike. What a waste of money.
Yes. I've been riding for 50 years. Trial and error really is what works.
Small adjustments that give positive feedback.
a bike fit sounds expensive at first, but if it can prevent doctor (or PT) visits in the future, it's a bargain! That said, I don't know if I could bring myself to spend $450 on a saddle, lol.
I hear you, but I’ve already spent more than that on doctor visits regarding Prostatitis
@@duzer I kinda figured! It doesn't take much to rack up medical bills, unfortunately.
Having this type of attention to detail to getting a bike fit is rare. Especially with a shop trying out different demo saddles. Plus you can’t get this understanding from online sizing and ordering bikes. I would recommend anyone who is really serious about having a bike that “fits them” buy a bike from a bike shop that has an experienced fitter with a proper fitting tools.
I would also recommend thinking about your chamois shorts in the same way as you think about your saddle. Different shorts will fit different with your anatomy, some good, sometimes causing pressure points or loose points. Plus shorts wear out. Get to know which brands fit you best.
For reference, I ride a full century ride at least 1x a month and last month did 3 full century rides with multiple long rides in between. I’m not retired but getting closer and planning on doing these multiple day rides in the Philippines and other countries.
👍
What is the average cost of a bike fit session?
Really depends on where you live, in Boulder it’s expensive, 2-300 bucks
Thanks. 2-300 doesn’t seem bad if it keeps someone from getting butt soars like you got on the divide trail. I am a novice. So even through expensive…worth every penny
How can i have better posture on a bike seat.....WITHOUT sitting on my NUTS! LOL!!!!
That’s is the golden question!! 😂😂
What's the cost of a bike fit?
Depends on your shop, Boulder is expensive, about 250-300
How did Coppi ever manage.
I think these bike fits are more a source of revenue for the store.
I bet 6 different Bike Fit experts would all have different results.
There are simply to many variables.

You can use your abdomen to help peddle by focusing on it just like he had you doing with the glutes.
Very cool
If your butt is the weak link, then a $450. saddle might make all of the difference in the world! One can only hope!
Might need to wait for some rain & wet, before you'll really know!
Good Luck!
We’ll see…I definitely need to test it on rough terrain in bad weather
Imagine how many infinity saddles just got sold
