  • Pocket notebooks are wonderful tools for capturing and reflecting on thoughts you have during the day. I also believe them to be a nearly essential addition to a second brain system. I hope this video helps you start your own and start reaping the benefits of having one!

    Nice little video. 👍
If I may offer two tipps that work very well for me and my pocket notebooks:
    1. If you can manage, bring two pens with different colours with you (black and blue being an obvious choice). First colour for jotting everything down, second for later revision, annotations, circles, arrows, underlining etc. This makes it easier not only to think on paper but also to re-think the deeper ideas again.
    2. I like to keep real thinking somewhat separate from quotes or lists. For that purpose, I write in my notebooks from both ends by turning it around. Ideas, reflections etc from the front, miscellaneous stuff from the back.
Anyway, you're on a very promising track if you keep on spending time with your thoughts and notebooks instead of your phone. Keep it up!

I love writing things down. It isn't much to think of at the time as you are filling those pages up, but years down the road, you will be delighted to come across an old journal book where it is like discovering a piece of your own lost history.
I know I I got some enjoyment out of relieving lost memories and events and also placing such events back in its correct timeline.

I couldn’t agree more. This is how successful people think. When I say successful, I mean emotionally intelligent, financially secure and generally content with life.
Writing uses a different set of pathways in the brain than typing or even talking. This keeps those thoughts around in “brain cache” allowing one to recall things very quickly. This is why comedians are usually really smart people: Timing is everything in comedy and being able to quickly reflect on speech and respond is a marque of intelligence.
I’ve used a moleskin pad for over 20 years. It installs confidence with customers, because they can see you’re taking their concerns seriously, that you’re listening. The benefits are countless. Never again will you have to struggle to revert a great ideas you had 2 weeks ago, but just can’t remember when it came up in conversation last night. This just works.

Technology is super useful, and what people don't understand is that notebooks count as technology. Of course not by themselves, but technology is just the application of knowledge and in this case: committing your thoughts to memory to remind yourself later, opinions you may have that you want to elaborate on that you simply just can't remember or type, or just pure efficiency. There's no extra features with a notebook; you make the features in it.

I can confirm from my own experience that my colleague and I (we are both active academics and engaged in a variety of activities) independently use this exact notebook. I own several of them, it's the best (also bit more expensive) notebook I've ever used, and I can't get enough of it. I use it primarily as a to do list, on one side I write my memos on each line (and cross off completed tasks and then whole pages), then on the other side I write my notes. I also use Apple notes but I always rewrite or consult a paper journal several times a day. It's by far the best system I've come up with in decades of study and practice.

So many more benefits to writing something down physically rather than the ingestion of digital media - your memory of tasks become more "stuck" in your head, having taken the time to write them down and see it being written.

I work in retail selling computer accessories, so I have to know about ALL the things to sell. Reading online reviews and listening to how my coworkers sell a product are not enough. I’ve been doing this exactly a year now, started at 2nd jan 2023, now 2024, although I carry it with me everywhere in my jacket in chest pocket, I do not write in it daily, I use it when I need to „deload” my brain out of thoughts and ideas, for me it’s starts when I can’t fall asleep at night and I stay wide awake for hours and hours, that’s my trigger to pick that notebook and write down everything for next few days, what I think, feel, any ideas, fears etc.. great stuff

I've been looking for a "system" to take notes, make checklists, jot down thoughts in the moment, and keep a record of things I would like to remember. The Bullet Journal - at least in it's pure minimalist state - is about as close to a systematic approach that might meet my needs. The downside of the Bullet Journal is that it is indeed a system by which everything has its neat little place. As you have discovered, sometimes you just want to jot down the thought quickly and have it available for when you want to remember or apply it. Get the thought down, then file it somewhere later. The A6 notebook is perfect for this. I appreciate how you explained everything and commend you for your desire to be intentional. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

This is gonna be an "um actually" comment but I'll try to not sound annoying and be respectful, since often these types of comments can sound condescending
But fundamentally, the bullet journal is actually two things: the types of bullets (events, notes, actions, etc), and reflection. In its purest state, it's literally just that. The bullet journal's main goal is to help classify "stuff" into loose classifications to aid in reflection later. It's the difference between
( ) Get a birthday cake for Ashley's birthday on Thursday
      and
      • Get birthday cake on Thurs
      - Ashley's Bday
This is why sometimes I do recommend just incorporating the types of bullets and reflection (and maybe an index in case you want to keep track of an idea and which page you put it), and bringing in the other logs on a necessary basis. For instance, maybe bring in a weekly log if you feel like processing any feelings from the week ahead, and/or planning the week forward. Maybe you just wanna crack open a blank page and write stuff. As long as it helps, you're doing it right.
It really just can be as simple as cracking a page open to your daily log, writing down some thoughts, then moving on. Then, daily, think about what you've written, and reflect on what youll do today, then what you'll do tomorrow. Each one of the "built-in" collections (Daily Log, Weekly Log, Monthly Log) are just prompts for you to reflect based on time (Daily, Weekly, Monthly), and to plan forward.
And if you have like a bunch of thoughts, ideas, actions, or events that are related, open to a blank spread, move all of that there, and boom you've just made a collection. Personally speaking, the ability to just write stuff and have it be in a collection was a paradigm shift. Like it sounds obvious, but to a person who's always felt paralyzed because of my search of perfection, just going in and writing whatever was just so freeing. That feeling hasn't changed, back when I first started to now.
To conclude, part of bullet journalling is deciding which collections are necessary. Personally, I don't use Future Logs that often because I use Google Calendar for that. I know people who don't use Weekly Logs or even monthly logs. At its core, it's about writing about stuff, and reflecting on how and why that matters.
again, not meant to be confrontational with this, or even forcing people to do bullet journalling "becaUsE itS tHe OnE TrUe wAy". Just wanted to share an aspect as to why even after so many years, after breaking up with it and coming back, after trying many different systems, I still come back to the comfort of my bullet journal.

Great video, enjoyed it much. I've been journaling in a little Moleskine pocket journal just like yours for the last 15 years, I've got 23 of them now filled with notes, thoughts, introspections, just about everything. I agree with everything you said. Journaling let's me organize my thoughts and I see things clearer, and it let's me access my intuition better. I started with a small Cross Century ballpoint for years, but now I use fountain pens, with fast dry ink. Love the tactile feel. Check out the Kaweco Sport fountain pens with a mini ink converter and extra fine nib so ink dries fast and does not bleed through the paper. They are so small and compact. It's cool seeing my journal filled with many different vibrant colours. All the best!
