I actually did this with one part of War and Peace. I just went forward closer to the end and I just briefly scanned the page for familiar names and found what I thought was a spoiler I was crushed by that situation, almost put me off reading it for a while and then days later when I came to that part it turned out that I misunderstood it, the page before explained the situation, it was a sweet surprise, since then I learned my lesson😭so no jumping forward
I'm from Russia and I had to read War and Peace twice from cover to cover when I was 16 for my literature class. Our teacher was crazy about this book and we had to know it to the smallest details. Me and my friends kinda hated it, just because our teacher was very harsh and didn't want to hear any opinions that were contrary to her own. But we coped with our frustration by rooting for the "bad guys" like Ellen and Dolohov and making up backstories for them about how they were just misunderstood. It was actually really fun and I will always have those shared memories with my friends, like a collective trauma😅 However, the book is quite moving and deep, and I grew to love it despite being really sick of it. And it always annoys me a bit when people dismiss it as incomprehensible. So I'm very glad you are enjoying it💕
Listening to you talk about War and Peace has given me the courage to go ahead and get it. It's been a book I've always wanted to read but being so chunky definitely scared me a little. But alas, I am gonna do it !
It took a couple hundred pages to really catch my stride and have all the characters and their relationships established well enough to get some flow going... for me it was the kind of book that I had to work at on my first read through but now I can just pick it up and flip it open anywhere and get carried away By the way the BBC miniseries from the 70's is a great watch (a young Anthony Hopkins plays Bezukov!)

As a twin, that quote hit so different because I actually do have a memory of being in the womb. It's one of my most treasured memories and seeing that quote made me think of it and it brought me indescribable joy. Thank you for putting that in the video. It truly made my day :) Also, you should be an audiobook narrator. Your voice is so soothing and I could listen to it forever :)

Idk how you guys feel about musical but Natasha Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 is soooo good. it’s based on war and peace. it’s not a traditional musical...at all. highly recommend.

Andrew and Pierre’s struggle comes from a different understanding of the world, an image forming after a series of disillusionments, and they find it hard to latch onto something because they experienced the loss of frivolous beliefs. It is a philosophical book for a reason.

Hey, I just recently started reading novels through recommendations of yours as well as others. I just picked up “One Hundred Years of Solitude” hoping to really dig it, thank you! The book or manga I should say that ultimately got me INTO novels though, a college student who was never interested in reading for as long I can remember, was called “Berserk”. I mention this random series to you now after just recently hearing of the great author’s passing, may he rest in peace. This dark fantasy about causality had been ongoing for about 30 years up until this very moment and influenced many things I see in many other stories today, even beyond it’s own medium. All I’m trying to say is take note of the series at the least. The story is definitely not told in the typical fashion that your used to, but that’s the exact reason why I think it’d be cool for you to check out sometime with an open mind. It is quite intense in its themes being that trauma is a big part of it, so I advise heavy trigger warnings. It’s a manga, which is a Japanese written graphic novel, that is told from right to left. It may appear kiddish, edgy, what have you, but I assure you not in the slightest, as it covers deep and complex themes at it’s core. I recommend this to you out of curiosity on not only your thoughts of this wonderfully crafted character driven tale ( the main character specifically and the ‘love triangle’) , but also on the different style of storytelling that I get the feeling you never experienced before, I could be wrong though. It’s a story of the struggles of life, carrying an unbearable weight, existentialism, betrayal, and more. If your one for art then you’ll be really blown away by some of the panels found in this book as it goes on too because its really magnificent, especially considering manga authors draw everything themselves too such as with this case. Much like a movie or show, visual storytelling or rather ‘show don’t tell’ is very much present in the character’s facial expressions and gestures too. If you ever did pick it up (or even saw this comment) I would say to look past just the gore and extreme horrors of storytelling used in this series to see the deeper themes it is trying to convey and I promise you a meaningful story lies ahead. I know your a seasoned and mature enough reader to take serious complex and disturbing things told in stories, and I think “Berserk” for the most part handles that stuff very well. At the very least read to the end of golden age arc in the story if you ever decided to give it a try. Anyways though if you even bothered to take the time out of your much busier day than I to read this essay of a comment then I thank you just for that. I also plan to read “War and Peace” too, especially since it looks to be quite enjoyable for you and many! Hopefully it won’t be too hard a read for me! Thank’s and have a good one, keep it up.

Officially Helen has died from angina, but some critics came up with evidence that the real reason is unsuccessful abortion. I can't really remember what they wrote (I read it years ago for my exam) and all materials are in Russian, but I just thought this information would be interested to hear. Sorry for my mistakes, English is not my first language... I'm so glad that you are appreciating Tolstoy, many people don't like Anna Karenina and consider it dumb love story, but the psychological aspect is what make the book so deep and authentic:)

(Spoiler warning ahead) I just finished reading the section where, amidst his overwhelming spells of madness, Pierre ran to save a little girl amidst the burning flames of Moscow and looting crowds of French soldiers. Wow! Talk about setting a powerful scene.
I agree, I find that War and Peace has a lot of Tolstoy's philosophy and I think as you have mentioned that it was not meant to be just purely a novel but more of his worldview and his theorising of why things are the way they are.

If Holden Caulfield could only sit down with Ellen, and have a long talk with her. I liked the hunt part. It was neat to see all the characters out and enjoying nature. That was fun. Then the little party at uncles place was tender, beautiful, fun. It seemed a last glimps of fun and serenity before 1812 hits the fan.
To read this book abridged would be a crime! lol It's unlike any other "book" I have ever read because it's the most panoramic piece of expression and such is life and it's brilliant! One should read this book not ever thinking when one will reach the end page, or what page one's in... or tedium will sit by you. I think.
I read War and Peace over the last winter break and I loved it but also had similar gripes with Tolstoy’s philosophical and political musings. My undergrad was in poli sci/philosophy and (as well as him having a bit too much repetition) I found a lot of his ideas to be based on unwarranted assumptions. The story was phenomenal though. Example: at the burning of Moscow, he makes an argument for seemingly no reason about how there was no arson. I remember making a note saying “really, Tolstoy?!”
Currently on page 861 and cannot belive that every page is so interesting😀 I was expecting that war pages will be boringish but even they are super interesting!
I read this many years ago and I wish I had used bookmarks! Another 'monster' book is 'Quiet Flows the Don' by Mikhail Sholokhov. Set during the Russian Civil War it follows the plight of the Don Cossacks, their families, and their villages amongst the river landscape and steppes. Well worth giving it a try.

I liked the hunt part. It was neat to see all the characters out and enjoying nature. That was fun. Then the little party at uncles place was tender, beautiful, fun. It seemed a last glimps of fun and serenity before 1812 hits the fan.

To read this book abridged would be a crime! lol It's unlike any other "book" I have ever read because it's the most panoramic piece of expression and such is life and it's brilliant! One should read this book not ever thinking when one will reach the end page, or what page one's in... or tedium will sit by you. I think.
I read War and Peace over the last winter break and I loved it but also had similar gripes with Tolstoy’s philosophical and political musings. My undergrad was in poli sci/philosophy and (as well as him having a bit too much repetition) I found a lot of his ideas to be based on unwarranted assumptions. The story was phenomenal though.
Example: at the burning of Moscow, he makes an argument for seemingly no reason about how there was no arson. I remember making a note saying “really, Tolstoy?!”
Currently on page 861 and cannot belive that every page is so interesting😀 I was expecting that war pages will be boringish but even they are super interesting!

I read this many years ago and I wish I had used bookmarks! Another 'monster' book is 'Quiet Flows the Don' by Mikhail Sholokhov. Set during the Russian Civil War it follows the plight of the Don Cossacks, their families, and their villages amongst the river landscape and steppes. Well worth giving it a try.

When you're done with the book, you should watch/listen to the 1956 movie version (directed by King Vidor and starring Audrey Hepburn, Henry Fonda, and Mel Ferrer).
So originally they are 4 separated books, but in the version you have they are gathered together, aren't they?
