- Have you ever thought about if a Mazda RX8 would make a good daily driver? Well neither have I, so here is a pointless video I made! Enjoy!

Just want to state, your engine will last very very long as long as you:
1.) Warm up past C symbol on temp gauge before every drive.
2.) Avoid redlining or over 5000 rpm until after 15 min of driving or oil temp reaching operation temperature.
3.) After reaching operational temp and/or driving for 15+ minutes, redlining your engine often.
9k a day, keeps the mechanic away.
4.) Ensuing cooling system is fully functional, bonus if you replace radiator with a aluminum one and a better electric fan.
5.) Check and ensure oil level never falls below .5 quart low. As in, you should always have a full engine by dip stick measurement. Never let it get 1 quart or more low.
6.) Change your oil every 3,000 miles without fail and use a GOOD oil filter.
And that’s it.
2004 RX8, original motor. I still own her, 154,000 original miles. Never really premixed. It’s not rocket science, it’s just attention to detail. I also have daily driven her for years, my wife mostly. 6spd manual.
I’ve driven across America with it twice, and ran it for over 24 hours straight. I’ve tracked it hard. And not once did she fail me.
I might trade my mr2 in now
That's a unicorn sir. Never let it go.
This is literally all I’ve really wanted to see thank you 😭🙏🏾
Good points - but there have been plenty of fails - even with rotary enthusiasts
.SpiinDeX you don’t buy a race car for efficiency. And it’s important to let your car idle at least 1min before driving. It will make your car last longer
I can't stop thinking about this car lol. All my friends dislike it due to the engine, I just love it
same man haha, my current car probably looks better than it to most but I still love the rx8 for all its quirks and looks. not forgetting the rotary goodness.
If you can afford the gas mileage and really do keep up with taking good care of it, I say get one. It's a unique car, and personally, I think it looks super clean.
Haseeb rehman it's got a happy boi smile so it should work with the ladies.
take it from an owner, i daily mine as well, if they hate it, when you get one let them drive it and watch their face light up. It's near impossible to not like it after driving it.
Bought one, had to return it after couple of days, the engine had to be completely rebuilt and at the time my budget sadly wasn't enough for that. I definitely plan on buying one in the future. The rotary just has so much character, I loved it.
"The price of gas is just a price you have to pay to have a good time while your everyday drive." ---> well told, sir. Thumbs up! Have fun riding your RX8.
Hookie look at the subaru brz, great fun car and the fuel economy is unbeatable for a sports car
But aren't there cars with higher horsepower and way better gas mileage that also handle as good as the rx8? What makes the rotary better than a piston engine? Seems like there's too many drawbacks.
Caden Farley it
It's an exotic.
What makes the rotary better than a piston engine? I think it's about .. it being something different - THE ROTARY.
Except you can also drive a v8 for the price so.. If your at v8 power levels your good?
"Dont do that, dont give me hope."
It's all about the SMILES per Gallon, not Miles per Gallon ;)
That's pretty good. I've built a motorized bike (extremely good handling for drifts at 30 mph even on ramps getting air and landing sideways continuing the drift), it got about 200 mpg with a customized 2 stroke engine. Cruise RPM was 10k+. I always wondered how it would do with a quality 4 stroke engine, that and I needed a bigger fuel tank than 10 oz, because that's only like 30 minutes of burn time around 15 miles (more if you're not full throttle, but what's the fun in that?)
Talk about smiles per gallon! Every person walking by would stare, a lot of random people cheered (I find this strange, but its fine with me). I can't tell you how many people got the biggest smile that seemed to be permanently affixed after I'd let them take it for a spin, lots of people got to try it out and had a blast.
Pick up a smiles per gallon sticker from thatdudeinblue
I have an RX-8 and will be getting rid of it for a Tesla Model 3 very soon. The Tesla is amazing. My RX-8 was fun but is nowhere near as enjoyable as driving a Tesla. No gas. Zero smelly toxic emissions. Plug in at home. No more gas stations. And insanely quicker and faster than my RX8 and it's significantly cheaper in fueling costs. My Mazda costed $2,500 for a year of filling up in gas roughly 12,000 miles. Only ~$340 for 12,000 miles in a Tesla Model 3.
Outdated imperial system
Smiles per gallon only applies if the rx8 is actually running lulz. Even then, civics are still quicker
This car is like nearly everyone's childhood crush. It reminds me of Nfs Mostwanted
Blasting eurobeat and driving my rx8 is the best stess relief, antidepressant, mind clearing act of them all. It's totally worth owning this car. Good work, cheers!
Driven by madness you made my day saying you listen to eurobeat and drive a sick Japanese car!!! My hero lol
Yaaaay :D Well, if you go JDM, you might as well go with the full package :P
Driven by madness you know I wonder how well would an rx8 do in a touge race .
Man can't mait till im 16 soo i can get a job and hopefully buy one...two more years baby
Anyone know the name of the song ??
"The rx8 may not be fast, but it's a ton of fun." Sums up my 5 year experience owning one. 90k miles and not a single problem except for a bent shift fork.
Mitchell McDonald it sure is a hell of a lot faster than my ‘66 vw bug. Haha
It's plenty fast for where I live with bunch of narrow roads and crappy roads
I have daily driven rotaries for most of my life. They are win.
The haters are just parroting what their friend's bother's cousin read on the forums.
Damn right !!!
Thinking of getting one so bad! Is it really worth it? I drive 5 miles to get to work and to the gym that’s it. I know the insurance is low and I could probably buy one easy for a grand without finance which would be a win, but still not sure
Brad G if it’s a cheap rx 8, make sure you get it compression tested,
then why are they the cheapest modern sports car money can buy if they're so good?
@@RUclipsSupportTeams so in your mind, higher price = more fun, better performance, higher speed or better control?
maybe in USA where petrol is almost for free the RX8 can be a daily driver. Try in Europe and you'd be broke easily.
Moreira Da Lima its not free dumbass
I wouldn't call $3.00 a gallon or more, free. Or even cheap
In europe it's 6 dollars per gallon ^^
its objectively cheap though, compared to the rest of the western world
$3 a gallon? Are you running race fuel? Its not even $2.60 here for premium. Maybe when it gets to $60 a gallon (there are some fuels this expensive), then I wouldn't touch my car. Nah, I probably would, lets face it, its a blast to drive! I just wouldn't take it on a road trip.
Edit: I'm in the middle of the US
I drove one and I loved the feeling just sitting inside that car it's amazing. I feel like it was made for me fits like a glove, but I can't afford to buy and maintain one at the moment your videos will have to do for now.
but it costs 5k
I owned my rx8 for 6 years (2005 rx8) it was my DD for 3 of those 6 years never gave me problems always kept up with oil changes it drives awesome handles great only complaint was the gas mileage but it was finally time to part ways with this car after first child was born I really do miss this car!
RX8 was my first choice to replace my Miata while my kids still visited and needed the extra seats, but ended up with a Z4 when that changed. The pleasure and smile you feel from a daily driver while getting from home to work and back again is worth so much more than the $$ saved on gas ;-)
I have a 05 Shinka edition in black cherry and it’s absolutely stunning when it’s all cleaned!
Well, I didn't know there was a Shinka Edition of one of my favourite cars when I switched my name lmao. Gotta get that car someday
I’m buying one today, so exited! And happy to find your channel, u got rid of all of my doubts! Appreciate it dude!
You enjoying it? :D
How is it 🙇🏼♀️
I test drove the rx-8 once about 8 years ago and really loved it, amazing car
My RX8 has around 140k miles and never had a problem with the Rotary but then again I never beat on it
2 years late but c'mon man, beat the shit out of that rotary, THEY LOVE THAT!
@@mikblues_146 I think he meant that he didn't rev the shit out of it when cold.
@@nova8747 Yeah revving it when cold will kill your engine
@@mikblues_146
Yep.
I'll try to take good care of my RX-8 when I get it.
I going to check out one on Saturday.
I've been dailying my rx8 for a couple years now as well and although she doesnt get good gas mileage the smile she gives me when I put my foot down is totally worth it 😁
The rotary engine baffles me. I cannot believe it exists. I don't know what it is about it but I feel like its something from another dimension.
4 more months to own this car and I can't stop thinking about it
Same!!
Bought mine almost a month ago and I love it😭
@@DyslexicCookie well I'll buy mine in a month but I have the dilemma between a Toyota Celica GT-S or a RX-8 Cosmo (mainly reliability)
@@paramecia6839 so hows the rx8
I've owned mine for 20 years. Such a great car to drive at the limit.
There are some issues that pop up occasionally. But with a service manual and lots of tools, this car is pretty simple to work on and resolve the issues.
Getting this as first car. Can't wait
Did you end up getting it? I’m thinking about it but don’t know too much about using it for daily use
RIP
Did you get it 🙇🏼♀️
Finally a guy who drives it on snow. I live in austria near the alps, it is awesome to drive on snow, you can drift it with a cold engine torsen and the perfect weight distribution gets you up the hill, and you will grin like a maniac, because it was so much fun.
these vids will keep me sane over the winter as my r3 is parked
I've had ALOT of cars, and the RX8 had always been my low key want to buy car for years now. Maybe one day I'll bite the bullet and pick one up. Thumbs up for a short streight to the point review. 👌
Did you do it?
So?
@@AliAbbasi-nn4on I did, it lasted a month before loosing compression 💀
@@Contempt805 ffs I really want to buy as my first car 💀 but I can’t afford repairs. How did it cost you?
I first drove one a month ago and bought it. Every day I look forward to driving. Mines the red. So damned pretty and fun. Thanks for your videos.
1:53 love the sound
My mom used to daily drive one back in the late 2000s. Was a great car to grow up with. My mates loved it too
Your RX8 has a wicked note! One more reason to give the Renesis a bit of a rev :) I take my kids to school most days in by my Black Series 2 RX8 and it is absolutely fine. Plenty of legroom and enough boot space for 3 school bags, plus the number of people who just stare at the suicide doors as everyone piles out, it's priceless!
My 3 rules to remember daily driving an RX8 are, always warm it up, redline it every drive and change the oil often. After 4 years of ownership I still look forward to driving it everyday, which I guess is the best recommendation you can have.
Had my rx8 two and a half years used every day. Driven hard serviced using mazda oil been brilliant.. When I get another car gonna keep this one.. It's. A 2010 r3
You forgot to mention about renewing some engine parts after 100 000 km. This is rotary baby.
Daily drive my Rx8 for 4 years now. Still love it.
How is it now?
@@RVCAXD Still driving it every day to and from work. 185,000 miles on my RX8. Has had some clutch and exhaust work done but otherwise, it's been a great car. Paint looks like hell though lol
I'm living in Japan and gonna buy a RX8 or a 350z as my first car soon
350z is best
350z all day long. buy mine haha
I’ve owned a 370Z, a 370Z Nismo (traded my original Z for the Nismo, and got rid of the Nismo last year and bought my current RX-8) and an RX-8 and I can tell you I personally love driving my RX-8 more than either 370Z, including the Nismo. My RX-8 handles way better than the Nismo. Yes the Nismo was faster, but not near as much fun to drive and there’s something about revving up the Wankel to 9,000 rpms that’s so thrilling. My daily driver is an SUV, but my weekend toy car is an RX-8 and I would never own another Z in place of it. Just my own personal experience, but like I said my 8 isn’t my daily driver either.
350z all day.
piston saves you money,my g
Don’t buy an rx8 they’re highly unreliable.
*Today marks the 6th anniversary of the end of RX production, on Thursday June 21, 2012 at **4:30**pm the very last RX car ever to be produced rolled off the assembly line.*
Interesting
doktorbimmer didn’t mazda release an rx9 concept
*LIAR*
@@zay-zv9pq Mazda never produces its concept cars for sale... in fact the RX9 never even existed as a concept, it was nothing but an internet hoax.
@@adrianleon1731 The Mazda RX brand was cancelled in 2012 with the last RX8.
Mazda discontinued development of Wankel engines in 2009 and has not unveiled any new production Wankel engines in 25 years.
This seems like a pretty awesome car for me. I don't do very long distances and maintenance isn't a problem for me. The only thing is gas mileage, but I can live with that.
I thought about buying one with the engine completely torn to pieces and putting in something like an LS or M52 or maybe even 2JZ because all the rest is just a perfect fit for me. If I bought a working Rotary I would take a really good care for it, but If I was to buy a dead RX8, I might as well put an LS in it- I'm living in Poland so it is not that common and an LS would sound just amazing.
Either way, it's great to see people taking such a great care for their cars, especially as quirky and unique as the RX8 :)
3:27 "The RX8 may not be fast...." I can't contest this, but there are many turbo kits (mostly GReddy, with a few others) and a few supercharger kits (Pettit, DNA Motorsports, or a used Hymee) available, and despite the negative stigma you can actually put 7-8psi of forced induction on a Renesis and it will last another 50-70k miles as long as you have a good stable tune and take extra-careful care of it in terms of keeping the oil fresh, premixing, monitoring temps and keeping the engine as cool as possible with cooling upgrades, etc. I'm in the process of installing my Pettit Stage II supercharger right now (very slowly lol), and I'm going to keep it at 8psi for the most part since my engine is at about 60k miles. Even a lowly 7-8psi, with either a turbo _or_ supercharger, will still put you up to almost 300rwhp (or around 340 at the crank, but who cares about that besides advertisers?), which is MORE than enough oomph to have fun in a car that only weighs about 3,200lbs total!
If modified in a certain way the rotary engine becomes fairly reliable. Even can do multiple engine starts and stops while it is cold. Had a FC with these mods on it but sold years ago.
I should get a RX8 in the future and put as many miles on it as I can. See if it will hit 300k plus before it needs a rebuild.
Picking one up with 15k on the new motor but the winter driving is a big deal. From what I’ve read it’s actually a pretty decent car in the winter
11mpg in the city? 😳
Ray Ray lol give or take, I sometimes get 14mpg. But yah it’s not the most fuel efficient. It’s no Prius, but if you have the money I’d recommend having an RX8 as a 2nd car.
I plan to buy a corolla and keep my RX8 as a fun car. But rn I’m stuck using it as a daily for now. It’s still smiles per gallon for now lol 😅
@@Bokie469 how much would you say is the daily average $$$ you put in gas a week?
@Rique id kill myself before that.
I daily drive my R3 also and agree with everything you said. The rx8 is a fantastic car to drive for sure and whole Hartley believe gas mileage is not the reason you buy a sports car lol
Mannn! This thing is just so clean! RX8s and 350z are my favorite cars
You make me proud of owning my 05 RX-8. Everything he said is true.
That's it I'm gonna but an rx8 I just need it to drive 20 mins to work and back everyday.
Did you end up getting it? Planning on getting one myself and I have a 20 min drive to school.
1 year later do you have it?
@@JustJoshBruh He don't have it unfortunately
I've owned mine for four years people say it unreliable but I push it to the limit and it never broke down or had problems mine currently has 158k miles on it
The only reason why i gave up on buying one (at least for now) is because i only can get something used, there are no brand new ones obviously. And each additional mile on it is actually one step closer to engine failure, that's how i see it. I need car maybe 2-3 times a week but i simply can't have fun with something that i constantly have to worry when is engine going to fail. MK4 GTI is source of endless fun, lasts for freaking ever if you take good care of it and it never gets old. Refused to trade it for MK6.
Oh and yeah i totally forgot we still have them under warranty in US lol, from what i know, if you happen to own RX8 in Europe, you are screwed xD. No recalls, no free rebuilds.
I love the way you matched up your aftermarket dials with oem in terms of color when it goes from blue to red!
Mia : No matter what, that ride is hot !
Please don't refer to apex seals going as the engine "blowing up" or "dying" as both are inadequate. It is closer to a head gasket going on a piston engine. Both require the engine to be taken apart and put back together again to correct. And yes, it can be corrected. If you take good care of your rotary, give it lots of love, and high rev's, the housings can be reused and the only thing you need to change are the seals. So it isn't a new engine, it is a rebuild, which piston engines have done as well. We don't refer to piston engines as "blowing up" or "dying" when they lose compression, why do we do it to rotary?
Ty for this comment! I really am intimidated now because of all the neg reviews!
I had one for 5 years and loved it!
Im about to buy my first RX8 in about a month Ive seen some 2004 models that are cheap and reliable so im looking forward to that
I really want one, but my commute distance is going to murder that rotary.
Great video! Just bought an RX8 and excited to create content on my channel around it.
Less gooo
My RX8 made it to 146k miles before finally getting low compression and hot start issues, but it took me everywhere and was pretty damn reliable while I had it. Just sold it, and definitely gonna miss having such a fun and unique car as a daily driver. I took it to Autocross a couple of times, and it really does handle like a dream around corners. I'm going to miss it for sure, but I'm also happy to have a boring and fuel efficient car now lol
Damn with the LEDs it looks like a spaceship in the car lol
I drive an FR-S and I have respect for this car and you sir. Nice video man.
I think it is one of those cars for an enthusiast only. If you keep on top of everything (oil top ups and not shutting down a cold engine) you should be ok. I'd buy a very cheap non runner and spend a few grand on a full engine rebuild though just to be sure. Good thing about buyer nervousness is these are cheap. That's an open road commute though, I hear these don't like stop start city traffic.
I hate like these cars.
But I feel they get too much hate. Out of all the mediocrity made and forced down our throats the RX8 is really quite exceptional for what it is.
To me cars like this shine because of the used market. New no thanks, but that's pretty much every car for me.
I'm glad your 8 has found a great home.
My RX-7 has 193k miles on the original motor and is still going strong
Me and my rx8 where how I met my wife! And I know your pain ! I live in m.i. and would drive here in the snow was so fun! I had to switch because at 97,000 she was starting to need a rebuild.
97k was pretty good, most engines failed at 60k miles.
Possibly one of the nicest RX-8 I’ve seen . Watching this video made me think twice about owning one in the future . I don’t understand why people list them as 1.3 then others list as a 2.6 .
Mazda officially lists each rotor as being 654cc making 2 rotors equal to 1.308L (13B).
However since each rotor has a power “stroke” once per revolution, in comparison to a piston’s one power stroke every 2 revolutions.
Then some argue that you need to double the displacement of the rotary when comparing them, because it has double the amount of powerstrokes as a piston engine.
What it like to drive a daily RX-8 ? You constantly thinking about new engine
I love your car, you made a pure gold.
A friend of mine swoped a rx7 13b in his engine after it blew up and it doesnt give him any probs as long as his up to date in maintenance
Used to have a rx8 engine blew did a k swap like a good swap 10 grand just to be installed and tuned this was to make everything work the air heat radio seats everything worked like factory then we supercharged it made 376 HP on pump gas and it felt like a stock engine and I sold it the man who bought it Dailey drives it and it's super reliable and cheap to maintain because it's basically a Honda
When you did that high way pull that mini van was right next to you 😂😂😂
a guy told me he needed 500-600 euro on gas for an rx8 as daily driver lol...I really like the rx8 as a design but if I ever get one I'm definitely changing the gnein lol...

yea its not so intimidating
I’ve been driving mine for 3 yrs,124000 miles, 60 miles a day.
Had it for a few months. Gas isn’t so bad, it’s a daily driver for me it’s fun to drive there’s a comment below on how to take care of it. Follow it, it works!
I had a rx8 for almost 2 years but I love my 350z now.
wish our country had mazda RX8 or supra:( atleast we have lancer and m3 lol..
Nice purple lights in the foot well, but also... premix! It really helps the rotary engine if you use premix.
lol as a daily RX8 driver it's fine other than the fact that you have to cradle it like a baby like start it up and let it sit there to warm up before work and take an extra 10-15 min drive every time you start it up to go to the store or etc. but it's a fun car to drive and real head turner for some reason I always get asked if its a Porsche.
I live in Utah and daily my rx8. My car also had a wide body kit and looks super cool!
notice how he has two cars, the only way u can own one of these

Um yes it is
As someone who has daily driven an RX-8 for the past year you’ll quickly find that the engine isn’t the biggest issue with this car, it’s the gas consumption. I could deal with driving an unreliable car, but I draw the line at an unreliable car with gas mileage that’s worse than an H2 Hummer.
Please trust me on this, don’t get this as your first car. It’ll end up just breaking your heart more then never getting one. I just wanted to learn the hard way lol
When the engine loses compression the first symptoms are higher fuel consumption and lower power... it will advance to complete engine failure with flooding and hard starting.
Can you convert these cars to electric?
@@pamspencer5733 You can convert them the A GM LS motor, Toyota 2JZ or a Barra engine.
ive just not long ago got ride of mt 06 Rx8....amazing car, and real fun to drive.....but my lord running that car as a daily driver was just eating through my wallett (petrol wise) ....tax in the uk around 512 for 12 months.....other then that a reall beautiful car to drive.......if i had more money i would definitely keep it. .. not to mention the cost when it starts having the warm start issues like i did..
never the less loved watching ur vids when i owned mine.....keep it up bro
good stuff man !! the Rx8 qas my first car man did i love that car and man did it cost me money lol i love how it drives and the sound was just wow..i compare it to my now audi RS3 in my opinion the are both #1 in therm of engine noise and fun but the rx8 handles better hands down !! great vid!!
Beautiful. If it was more reliable it would have been the talk for years
The engine will last if you keep the oil clean, don't run the engine cold and delete the cat (rx8 chokes on exhaust). I've seen 2 motors trashed from oil sludge in the OMP (oil injection pump)
Wankel engines are inherently unreliable... which is why they are obsolete

How much hp does it have?
I am seriously obsessed with this car for some reason, i just love it 🤷♂️dont know🤷♂️
I like the way this car looks. I'd buy it with different engine in it if I'd need one, but I already have a car.
really like the looks and sound and im sure its a blast to drive but I had to pass because too much reliabilty issues I've heard. Sucks they should redesign it some to fix the issues
I’ve been wanting to get this car since I was 9 (welp, mainly because of nfs most wanted, it was my favorite car) but now after seeing how it “unreliable” it is, I donno anymore, But every time I see one, it always makes me want it more😂
21mpg is damn good compared to my 93 Toyota Land Cruiser's 8mpg.
After owning a RX-8 for about 3 years,my best advice is stay away from them, very addictive to the engine sounds, you don't need a stereo believe me..😅
They are very expensive to keep running right, sparks plugs alone are
$ 25 each, rotary engine oil 5 quarts are
around $85 .
You got to use premium ⛽️ and eat it like nothing 😅, you can actually see my gas needle moving when I step on it, I got some videos of my rebuild on my channel...Mr.Rx8
Brilliant car got a 2010 r3 . Had nearly two and a half years daily driver. Drive it hard use only mazda oil never let me down.. Cobra back box rest standard..
I found a 2008 RX-8 Luxury FE Manual with 100,000kms for $12,000 AUD :) and in silver, these cars look like so much fun i might buy it!
I found a 2004 RX-8 Challenge with only 58 000 kms for 6500 €! Idk is that legit, but I will took my friend, he is expert for cars (also he know how to "crack" kms, and he can check is that cracked).
*3500 €, no 6.5, mistake...
I got a question. One of my neighbors told me to call Mazda it self and give them the car number so they can take a look at it. He said if the car has a problem, they’ll fix it themselves with no cost. Idk if this is true or there has to be a certain thing you have to do.
Im learning how to drive stick with my friends 2009 RX8. I pretty much got the hang of it already
I bought an 05 with bad seals...it now has a fresh ls1...handles great, gets better mileage then the rotary, more reliable. and now it’s fast as hell. Only have about $6000 in it with the car purchase. I’m pleased
I am glad you are happy with the swap you did, satisfying when the swap works out and everything works... that said, not hating or anything... BUT WHY IN THE WORLD DID YOU PUT AN LS IN AN RX8
xPHEONIX GAMINGx Honestly...ls motors are a dime a dozen and can make decent power....The swap was about $4000 that pretty damn cheap...
m Stroik yeah I mean I do love the LS engines, they are good reliable and a great platform for power. I'm just a rotary engine fan so I read that and thought I would reply with a why in the world would you do that... but yeah man I'm glad it works, do you have any vids of it
hows your RX-8's thirst with that engine? asking since i'm still thinking of buying one
+m Stroik
I want to see pics of both the car and your invoices. I know LSs are cheap, but the RX-8's engine compartment is TINY and LS swapping one requires a LOT of custom work. How do I know you're not just making things up?
Very cool video - nice production !
Everyone I've ever talked to about the rx7 and rx8 hate them. Hate rotaries. They're fucking yummy, they rev high, sound amazing, look fucking awesome and make a surprising amount of power when tuned. One day when I'm loaded I will 10000% buy an RX8
