All of Les Edwards Hero Quest box art pieces are fantastic. Their realistic style grounds the fantastical elements of the games and and really sets the tone. The games may have been directed at kids but the art helped me feel like I was playing something "grown up"
My favourite is the art for Kellar's Keep, I love how he painted the gargoyle emerging from the rock face.

All very solid choices, particularly Ian Miller’s Death on the Reik cover.
I might make a case for the cover of Dark Future. The expression of terror on the renegade’s face, and the way the interceptor is portrayed as anonymous and sinister, turns the usual hero/villain dynamic on its head in a way that Percy suits the game.
But kudos for the final choice, I almost cheered! Second edition WFB was what immediately came to mind when I read the title, and I was so pleased to see it there. It was the edition that got me into a lifelong obsession with Warhammer, after receiving it as an unexpected Christmas present. Fond memories of my then 9 strong ‘horde’ of orcs (from GW’s early Lord of the Rings range) fighting for a bridge in my first ever game.

Les Edwards, 'HeroQuest' box cover (1989) for me.
This was the piece of fantasy artwork that changed my life. I remember being 9 years old, seeing the game at the store and becoming completely mesmerized by it. Got it for my 11th Birthday. That's where my hobby journey began. Today I use it as desktop art on my laptop. So I literally look at it every single day. Nothing comes even close for me.

When Boxed Supplement category was announced, my first thought was "Circle of Blood" so I'm glad we think alike. Grudge of Drong and Return of the Witch Lord were also 100% solid choices. If there's one piece of original GW art I could own, I think it'd be that cover to Circle of Blood. It's just perfect. - Joey Jar Jar.

Jordan, fantastic list! HeroQuest, Warhammer Quest, and Man O’War are definitely some of my faves, along with many White Dwarf covers during the 90’s- i also think the BattleMasters box cover is pretty ace as well! But I do think there was one omission in my eyes, and I believe I may know pour quoi, if you even considered it, because it was done by a a Renaissance painter as opposed to GW artist- the cover of the original Mighty Empires! To me, that’s basically tops in my book, the complexity and detail in that is absolutely phenomenal, drawing and painting literally thousands of soldiers by hand on that canvas…. How do you even start a masterpiece like that?? Maybe we can give it an honorable mention? ;)

Brilliant choices! I was so glad to see the 1st Talisman cover by Gary Chalk given a shout- that would have been my favourite. Gary is such a capable artist- he has a knack for including a huge amount of detail in images which are instantly readable. The early work he did for GW is my favourite though. That image in particular has character and atmosphere in spades. I'm on the look out for a first edition Talisman box that I can put the (slightly superior) contents of the second edition Talisman game into!

All the Geoff Taylor stuff is just next level for me. I really don't know if it will ever be surpassed, especially as far as the effect it had on me at that right age. There was also a bazillion White Dwarf Covers he did but all the Warhammer Fantasy stuff in particular. Remember the one with the Knight of the Blazing sun, Dwarf and Barbarian fighting this colossal red dragon with a host of warriors in the background? Epic.

While not necessarily being my favorite piece of GW Box/game art, the box art for the 2nd edition of Warhammer 40K is probably THE most foundational. It was what caught my eye in the game store at 13. I remember picking up the box and instantly knowing that THIS WAS FOR ME. Sure I thought the space marines were awesome but one of my clearest memories of that time is seeing the orks with guns and all their patterned up armor and banners and just being stoked out of my mind. Then I flipped the box over and read the classic 40K preamble and knew that my fate had been sealed.

You've made me sad that I sold my copy of Death on the Reik, but never mind... The Heroquest cover is amazing and is certainly one that jumps out from memory. The original WFRP cover is to me at least pretty unforgettable. I like a couple of the Space Ork supplement covers from the very early 90s quite a lot though they were very much favourite books which helps.
I think if there's one game I got just because of the cover (and never played) then it's perhaps a bit of an obscure game called Blood Royale. Was used as the cover for WD91 which is the first one I bought and absolutely loved.

    • @mikenolan73

Yes it's great. I still have the box and most of the contents, chiefly because the map/board has disappeared so I can't sell it. Other than the box the map was the best bit, I still remember twelve-year-old me ending up reading encyclopedia entries about sword-making in Toledo as a result. I think I did want to play the game, just couldn't interest anyone else in it at all.

I’ve got a print of the Battlefleet Gothic art signed by John Blanche, that I won in a White Dwarf contest back in ‘99? It’s a bit tatty now as it’s followed me through uni and many work spaces, but is still a classic. That said, 40k 3rd edition or Warhammer Quest are the box arts I’ve stared at the most in my life.

I certainly disagree with some of your selections, but art appreciation is a very personal perspective, and there's no wrong, just differemt. But to give you some of the 'right' choices and there's certainly a how many to pick from! But as much as I like BFG, maybe my top game back in the day, I think some rev action from Dark Future or the DF & Gorkamorka spiritual successor, Speed Freaks covers, Supplemant wise, i thought Storm of Vengance, cover of which I think has been used across a few different publications, I'd also have to go with 2nd Ed 40k and to round of the Iconic 1st ed Space Hulk cover.

Interesting picks but if i'm being super critical i think the format needs a little work. It's a miniatures box but the 6th ed Clanrats boxart is just the Goat and i'm not even a Skaven guy. Secondly Codex Battlezone Cityfight, easily the coolest Imperial Guard ever depicted. Similar era but Codex: Eye of Terror is also another good one as it's a rare 'abstract' piece showing Abaddon literally crushing Cadia in his Claw (Talon). Finally the 4th ed (?) Chaos Army Book, all i can say is Holy f*** what is that DOOMSDAY MACHINE in Background?

For me it has to be the only GW big box game which doesn’t actually feature GW art - Mighty Empires (1990), with ‘The Battle of Alexander at Issus’ by the, admittedly GW sounding name of Albrecht Altdorfer. Summed up the game beautifully.

Hero Quest is a brilliant bit of enticing art followed by 2nd edition 40K and 3rd edition, if not all of, Blood Bowl game art. Now I am hoping you might agree… if I had become involved in the Fantasy Battle I might have been able to play it, sadly all my friends of then were 40K fiends so that is what happened to me, which shouldn’t sound like an abuse victim, GW is that abuser really, thankfully I am not an AoS victim that has just had my army or whatever it called culled from existence; does make me a bit concerned about my desire to get into the Fantasy Battle game now, sorry I mean the Old World, but Orcs are never not good 😂
