- On June 2, millions of Mexicans are set to make history by voting in their first-ever female president with the two leading candidates both being women; Dr Claudia Sheinbaum from the leftist Morena party, and her right-wing rival, Xóchitl Gálvez. Annette Young heads to Mexico to ask what does this political watershed mean for women's rights in a country where femicide is a massive problem and an estimated 10 women are murdered each day. We meet both candidates and ask them how will they prioritise gender equality given the extent of problems in the Latin American nation besieged by drug wars. We also meet femicide activist, Norma Andrade, and renowned feminist writer, Dr Marcela Lagarde.

@@unibomber6246 For the same reason mexican women dream to live in places like Miami or Dubai. They have no idea about the day to day life in those places. It is so easy to romatisize the unknown. I tried to give it a try the first two years after 2018's election as soon as chaos erupted over the shut down of the oil pipe network I knew everything was heading straight to hell. I was lucky to have sold my business to my employees by the end of 2019 getting 100% percent of my investments back to start a new life in Ireland. Living costs have eaten all of it away and I'm again an employee after owning my own business but here I can live more comfortably that way than I ever did in Mexico.

Xóchitl Is not a conservative. She was a member of the communist student league. The laws she put forward as senator were all progressive. Her policies are all in line with an active involvement of the state in regulation, economic development and provision of services. She is not a member of any political party and she promotes women's financial independence and STEM education. Claudia on the other hand has no policies of her own and has made a career out of being a yes woman to men when they need to put a female face to their patriarchal authoritative policies.
