According to Kit and Krysta, Nintendo did the Year of Luigi because the Wii U was reeeally struggling, so they just wanted something to bring more attention to the games being released for it. Ironically, also according to Kit and Krysta, Nintendo hates celebrating anniversaries (notice they've never done a year of any other character), so they had to really be desperate to push this campaign.

Luigi got 2 games with his name in the title I think that's kind of notable. combined with his role in dream team and the cameos in 3D world (which they kept up with hiding Luigis in odyssey) it was a pretty cute fun event

I really enjoyed the Year of Luigi. Yeah, it was stupid and a little pointless, and it was Nintendo's worst financial year on record, but I just thought it was charming to see the little logo and get a few Luigi-centric games. I don't even like Luigi, I'm a Mario guy, but he's a funny fellow and he's an icon, and it's so nice to see such a focus on him when he used to be such a neglected character. I remember back in the N64 days people really thought Nintendo had something against Luigi in particular with the way he always played second banana to Mario, but now he's got his own identity and holds a place in all of our hearts.

It was also the year Starbomb released the music video for Luigi's Ballad. I wouldn't be surprised if this whole marketing blitz brought Luigi back into the forefront for a lot of younger Nintendo fans after he'd been absent in the a lot of the mainline N64 & GCN games.

Fun fact: The Year of Luigi was one of my inspirations to do a written character study on Luigi back in high school. I was starting to have a much deeper appreciation for Luigi during 2013, especially since i was the younger of 2 brothers growing up. It's rather unfortunate that not a lot of Luigi related content was released as far as games go, and even more unfortunate that it ended up being a major loss for Nintendo. Kind of a shame really. At least we got a cool Miiverse Commuinty during that time. Oh and another thing, technically Luigi made his debut in the Game and Watch adaptation of Mario Bros, which released before the Arcade game. Oops.
The one thing that I don't like about the New Super Mario Bros. games, is that you can only really save the game after a castle level. You can save your game anywhere after you beat the game, which to me doesn't make sense.
