Audi has spent the last few years coming up with a plan to replace the current TT, and all signs point towards electrification and a drastic change in bodystyle. The TT is set to be axed when production of its current generation ends this year, and the car will be replaced by a new SUV-inspired model with four doors.
The original TT stunned the car industry when it was first unveiled in 1998. But sales have dwindled in recent years, leaving some within Audi to suggest that the firm ought to leave that area of the market altogether.
Audi’s board member for technical development, Oliver Hoffman, has told us that the company had decided to push ahead with a change of positioning, “We want to add some very emotional cars to our portfolio, but a direct follower for the TT is not the answer,” he said. “We can’t just say we’ll do the TT in an electric way.”
Audi recently unveiled the fourth and final model in its series of design concepts, called Activesphere. Using a taller, rugged body, the Activesphere blends coupe and SUV cues with EV underpinnings, and it's likely to go on sale in the next few years to effectively replace the TT. In the meantime, we sampled Audi's stylish sports car in roadster form to remind ourselves what we'll be missing when production ends.

R.I.P. Not only the TT, but every single car that died in favor of SUVs, I know SUVs are more appealing to people, but we need to have cars with soul :(

I think sports cars and things like that use to be more popular because more ppl had the $$ to own multiple vehicles. Nobody is gonna own a TT as their only vehicle its just not practical.

@@sg.1. I just think sports cars/fun cars are becoming less popular because things cost more and not as many ppl can afford to buy multiple vehicles like they use to. In the 80s or even 90s lots of ppl had some sort of sports coupe or a roadster while also having a Honda minivan/suv in the driveway. I just think things are so damn expensive these days that most ppl can now only buy that one family vehicle and even then it’s overpriced

That's a cracking looking car, always had been and that interior is nicer for not having a screen, it's a better design in my opinion. Such a shame we're losing all these cars for identikit SUVs. Oddly liked that colour too. Thanks for the review.

I can’t believe Audi have killed off this car, or the R8 for that matter. They are modern icons. What’s next, Porsche killing off the Boxster/Cayman/911? Absolutely ridiculous from Audi, they should be ashamed and the marketing department needs sacking.

I’ve just bought a 2019 Coupe Quattro and it’s taking care of an itch I’ve had for years. I don’t need a ‘sensible’ car anymore albeit when the seats are down, the boot is massive ! (A bit shallow but great). The TT imo is and always has been a head turner. In the right colour and with good wheels, it’s as good looking a car as you can get for less than £40k.

Wow, that surely is a mistake, how could they drop it! They should keep the body and interior and just fit it on top of an ID3 GTE or whatever VW call that bland box of a car. No control changes just fit it on top. They would then have the prettiest Electric car on the road. Best thing is its not an SUV and it looks superb!

This front wheel drive TT is "better than a (rear wheel drive) BMW Z4"? I'll need more proof than just a simple say-so I'm afraid :-) I do think the dashboard is very well done, very neat how they made it look clean while it has all the bells and whistles you need. Heated seat-buttons in the airvents, satnav in the drivers's display... very tidy :-)

Nice one Nicola. I confess, I was never a huge fan of the first two versions but I have warmed to this one. In this colour to appreciate it most would I need to get some of that orange fake tan like some TV antiques dealer? There is room in the boot for some top up aerosol cans of orange, a spare shirt and a towel oh and some glob to slick back the head mop if you got caught in the rain on the motorway. It will be sad to see it go but we still have that wonderful drop top sports munchkin the MX5.... for now anyway. Many thanks for sharing.

Get the MK2 TT-RS. The DSG multi clutch in MK3 and MK2 TTS requires dealership only tools to replace and is about a good $5k to $6k to replace. Over engineering makes most typical components expensive to replace given they are located behind the coolant hoses pipes.
Typical instruction page count for replacing something on a TTS is about 3-4 pages. TT-RS 1-2 with 3 being the most.

I've always hated SUV's for a number of reasons. 1) Resurrection of obscure letters, BMW with X, Audi and Skoda with their Qs... a minor issue but one that grates on me. 2) The lost of actually practical cars, estate cars! My Octavia is not a massive estate, but has a much bigger boot than most similarly priced SUVs. I also don't want to sit with my head in the clouds, i want to be sat down low, i want my miles to be done comfortable, not upright and jacked up high. 3) They're fugly. There are not many SUV's that i look at and think "what an interesting design..." Maybe the new Hyundai Kona, but give every new SUV a year and their designs look dated and horrible, even interesting designs like the 3008. However i still look at an Audi A6 from 5 years ago and think they look great. The Honda Civic Estate from about 7-8 years ago. great looking car... Death to SUVs...

I've an A3 1.8 S-Tronic drop top, quite sporty, I don't know when or where I could actually drive faster safety on UKs B roads, even it I swapped it for a McLaren Artura Spider. It's my first drop top and I'm won over, sure torsional rigidity might be a problem on a hot lap at the Nuremberg Ring, but I can live with that, every drive is an event and you're there, not just cocooned in a box.
Plus I can put a bike rack on the back, to take my bikes places to ride, who'd of thought it , what "sports equipment" do all them massive SUVs queued up at McDonalds have in the back I wonder, when you only need a bike rack to transfer a bicycle around? I guess I will have to keep my little Audi rag top for ever since SUV's have taken the world over!

Anyway they can bring out all electric and SUV things they want, however these discontinued cars will exist on the roads and will be missed once the electric/SUV fad goes.

TT's are only fun in the Quattro flavours and preferably the beefier engine options but Quattro is an absolute must. Else they really are front wheel hairdresser cars. Doesn't help that they're soaked in VW stuff. They're a skip but the TTS and above versions with Quattro are good fun - impressively lot of performance for the buck.

As much as I love cars like this it really is limited in it's appeal. Personally I'm a huge fan of fast wagons that tick many more boxes than this.
